If Minecraft Java Edition stops during startup with org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Pixel format not accelerated, update the operating system and the correct graphics driver, restart, then test an unmodded game profile. The error means LWJGL could not create the game window with an accelerated OpenGL pixel format; it does not, by itself, prove that your graphics card is broken or that you need to buy new hardware. If those first checks do not solve it, verify which graphics processor Minecraft is using and which Java runtime the launcher selected.
What does “Pixel format not accelerated” mean?
Minecraft Java Edition uses LWJGL to communicate with graphics systems. On Windows, the exception is raised while LWJGL is creating the game window and choosing an OpenGL pixel format. In practical terms, Minecraft did not get the accelerated OpenGL configuration it requested, so startup fails before the game can render normally.

The wording points to graphics initialization, but the underlying cause is not always a defective graphics card. Minecraft Help identifies outdated software or graphics drivers as possible causes. CheatBreaker’s documentation also lists missing, improperly installed, or outdated graphics drivers, and notes that an incompatible Java runtime can matter on some systems—particularly some Intel Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge computers.
The exception has been reported across more than one game release. A Mojang issue record documents it in Minecraft 1.17.1 and links it to issue MC-297. Seeing the message on an older version therefore does not establish that the error is exclusive to that release.

What should I check before changing settings?
Record the details of the failing setup first. They help distinguish a driver problem from a Java, mod, version, or machine-specific issue, and give support staff information they can use if troubleshooting does not work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Save the complete crash report, not just the final line shown by the launcher.
- Write down the Minecraft version and launcher you used.
- Note the operating system, graphics card or processor graphics model, and graphics-driver version if available.
- Record the Java version and, if the launcher offers a runtime selection, which runtime the game profile is set to use.
- Note whether Forge, Fabric, shaders, or other mods are enabled, and whether the same game version starts on another computer.
Do not change several variables at once. If the game begins working after an operating-system update, driver installation, Java change, and mod removal all at once, you will not know which change mattered. The sequence below starts with common system-level checks, then narrows the diagnosis.
How do I fix the error step by step?
1. Install operating-system updates and restart
Use the operating system’s update settings to install available system updates, then restart the computer. Minecraft Help lists operating-system updates and a restart among its suggested troubleshooting actions. A restart also ensures that newly installed system components or drivers are loaded before the next test.
2. Identify the graphics processor Minecraft can use
Check the computer’s device or system information to identify its graphics hardware. The relevant processor may be Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD. On a laptop with switchable graphics, the machine may have both integrated graphics and a dedicated GPU; knowing both models matters because the game may be starting on a different processor than expected.
Do not identify the graphics card from the laptop’s branding alone. Record the actual GPU model shown by the system. If you are unsure which processor handles rendering, keep both reported models and the driver details when seeking support.

3. Install the correct manufacturer graphics driver
Get the driver from the manufacturer responsible for the identified graphics processor. Minecraft Help names Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD as graphics-driver sources. Choose the driver for the actual GPU and operating system, install it, and restart before testing Minecraft again.
A driver that appears in the system does not necessarily mean the correct manufacturer OpenGL support is installed. A generic display driver can be a clue that the expected graphics driver is missing, but that explanation is secondary community guidance rather than a universal diagnosis. Use the GPU manufacturer’s driver for your hardware instead of assuming that any display adapter entry is sufficient.
For a computer with switchable graphics, establish which processor the game is using before considering hardware changes. The existence of a dedicated GPU does not by itself show that Minecraft is rendering on it. Record the integrated and dedicated GPU models and include them in any request for help.
4. Test Minecraft without mods
Launch a clean, unmodded Java Edition profile. Disable Forge or Fabric, shaders, and other mods for this test. If the clean profile starts but the modded one does not, the difference is useful evidence: the base game can initialize in that setup, so troubleshoot the modded configuration separately rather than treating the result as proof that the graphics card needs replacement.
Minecraft Help recommends disabling mods while investigating performance problems. Keep the original profile intact; use a separate clean profile or temporarily disable the mod setup so that you can restore it after the test.

5. Check the Java runtime selected by the launcher
If the operating-system and graphics-driver updates are installed and an unmodded profile still fails, check which Java runtime that particular launcher profile uses. The installed Java version and the runtime actually selected for a game launch are not necessarily the same thing. Launcher controls and labels differ, so inspect the runtime setting for the failing profile rather than changing Java globally without checking.
CheatBreaker documents cases where an incompatible JRE causes this exception and specifically calls out some Intel Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge systems. This is a targeted check, not evidence that Java is the cause on every computer. If you adjust the runtime, make one change, launch the same clean profile again, and note the result.
6. Confirm the game version and system requirements
Check Minecraft Help’s current Java Edition minimum requirements for your operating system and hardware, and use the latest supported game fixes available for your setup. The exception has appeared in multiple release contexts; the Mojang-tracked 1.17.1 report is one documented example, not proof that a particular version is always responsible.

A result that changes with the game version is useful diagnostic evidence, but it does not by itself identify the root cause.
7. Send the crash report if it still fails
If the error persists after the clean-profile test and the system checks, contact Minecraft or launcher support with the full crash report and your recorded environment details. Include the Minecraft version, launcher, operating system, GPU model or models, graphics-driver version, Java runtime, and whether mods were disabled during the test. Those details make the report more actionable than the exception line alone.

Which cause is most likely in my setup?
The message alone cannot distinguish a stale driver from a Java-runtime mismatch or a mod-related problem. Use the pattern of results to decide what to investigate next, without treating any one clue as a diagnosis.
| What you observe | What it helps you investigate |
|---|---|
| The error occurs before any modded content loads, and the graphics driver is missing, generic, or out of date. | Confirm the GPU model and install the matching manufacturer driver; restart before retesting. |
| A clean profile starts, but a profile with Forge, Fabric, shaders, or other mods fails. | Investigate the modded profile and its components rather than assuming the base game or GPU is unusable. |
| The driver is current and a clean profile still fails, especially on an older Intel system. | Check the Java runtime selected for the profile. Incompatible JRE cases are documented for some Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge systems. |
| The issue appears on one computer but not another using a comparable game setup. | Compare the machines’ GPU models, drivers, operating systems, and selected Java runtimes; the difference can help isolate a local system issue. |
| The error appears across more than one Minecraft version on the same machine. | Do not assume that switching versions alone will fix it. Recheck graphics initialization, runtime selection, and the machine-specific setup. |
Do I need a new graphics card?
Not based on this error message alone. Update the existing GPU’s manufacturer driver, confirm which GPU the game uses, and test a clean profile before considering a purchase. A hardware recommendation requires the actual GPU model, operating system, physical and power constraints, and confirmation of the OpenGL support needed by the game; the exception itself supplies none of those details.
Likewise, do not buy a USB graphics adapter or other hardware as a general-purpose fix. A purchase might not address an outdated or incorrectly installed driver, a runtime mismatch, or a mod-related failure. If the existing hardware’s OpenGL capabilities are in question, provide its exact model and the crash report to support before spending money.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might updating Java alone not help?
The exception occurs when LWJGL tries to create an OpenGL window, so a Java update is not a substitute for a working graphics driver. Conversely, on some older Intel systems an incompatible JRE is a documented possible cause. Check both layers in order: first establish that the correct GPU driver is installed and active, then verify the runtime selected by the failing launcher profile if the clean-profile test still crashes.
Also distinguish the Java version installed on the computer from the one the launcher uses for the game. Changing a system-wide Java installation may leave the launcher’s selected runtime unchanged, so verify the profile setting and test the same profile after any adjustment.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not assume that the wording proves a hardware failure or that a new GPU is necessary.
- Do not install a driver based only on the computer manufacturer’s name; identify the GPU model and use the relevant graphics manufacturer’s driver.
- Do not leave mods enabled during the clean-profile test; that makes it harder to separate a base-game startup failure from a modded-profile problem.
- Do not change multiple variables between tests. Keep notes so you can identify which change affected the result.
- Do not send support only a screenshot of the final exception line when the full crash report and system details are available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “Pixel format not accelerated” mean Minecraft is using OpenGL?
The exception is raised during LWJGL’s Windows OpenGL window-creation process, when it tries to choose a pixel format. That identifies the stage where startup failed; it does not by itself reveal which component caused the failure.
Can this error happen on a newer Minecraft version?
Yes. A Mojang issue record documents the same exception in version 1.17.1 and links it to MC-297. That record shows the message is not confined to one old release, but does not establish that every version or system is affected.
Should I reinstall Minecraft if this error appears?
The documented causes point first to system software, graphics drivers, the selected Java runtime, and mods; the exception alone does not establish that game files are damaged. Preserve the crash report and test the system and a clean profile before deciding that a reinstall is warranted.
Can the error be caused by my laptop choosing integrated graphics?
A laptop may have both integrated and dedicated graphics, so it is worth identifying which GPU is available to the game. The error message alone does not prove that GPU selection is the cause; record both GPU models and compare the setup before changing hardware or making a purchase.
