Start with a control test: from the Nintendo Switch 2 HOME Menu, press the Capture Button, open Album, and check whether the new image appears. If HOME captures work but Stellar Blade does not, the failure is probably limited to an application or sequence that blocks captures. If HOME captures fail as well, troubleshoot storage, system software, and the left Joy-Con 2 before changing anything inside the game.
Use the symptom to identify the fault
A missing Stellar Blade screenshot can come from four different boundaries: the game or a particular scene, the console’s capture storage, the system software version, or the controller input. Testing those boundaries in order is faster than repeatedly pressing the button in the same scene.

| What you observe | Most useful next test | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| A screenshot appears from HOME but not in Stellar Blade | Try a normal gameplay scene after leaving menus, cutscenes, or other restricted content | The software or that sequence may intentionally block captures |
| The failure occurs only during one scene or sequence | Move to a different playable area and press Capture again | The blocked content is probably scene-specific |
| No screenshot appears from HOME either | Check Album capacity, system version, and microSD Express storage | The problem is at the console or storage level rather than Stellar Blade |
| HOME capture fails with one left Joy-Con 2 but works with another | Repeat the test with the second controller attached | The original left Joy-Con 2 needs service |
| HOME capture fails with two left Joy-Con 2 controllers | Test while undocked with a left Joy-Con 2 attached, then arrange console service if necessary | The console may be the failing component |
First, verify that the capture was actually saved
Run the HOME Menu control test
- Exit Stellar Blade to the Nintendo Switch 2 HOME Menu. Do not assume that a button press made in the game was recorded.
- Press the Capture Button once on the left Joy-Con 2. A normal capture should produce the system’s capture feedback.
- From HOME, open Album.
- Look for the newest image and open it to confirm that it is a still screenshot rather than an older capture.
This test establishes whether the console can create and display a capture at all. A successful HOME image rules out a completely failed Capture Button, a totally full capture destination, and a system-wide inability to open Album. It does not prove that every Stellar Blade scene permits screenshots, because software can restrict capture in selected locations.

Switch 2 can keep captures in system memory or save new captures to a compatible microSD Express card. Album is the place Nintendo directs you to view saved images, so use Album rather than relying only on an on-screen animation. If the latest image is present there, the capture succeeded even if the game returned to play immediately.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
If HOME captures work but Stellar Blade fails
Interpret “Unable to take a capture now.”
Nintendo Support uses the message “Unable to take a capture now.” for situations in which a capture cannot be made. Nintendo also explains that some applications, software, or specific portions of games do not support screenshot captures by design. The message therefore does not, by itself, identify a broken console or a Stellar Blade installation.
Move to an ordinary gameplay scene
- Leave any menu, dialogue overlay, cinematic, loading transition, or other non-playable sequence.
- Wait until direct character control has returned.
- Press the Capture Button once in a normal gameplay area.
- Open Album from HOME and check for the new image.
If the second scene captures successfully, the first location was restricted. Use the working scene as the deciding test instead of pressing Capture repeatedly during the blocked sequence. A restriction can apply to one part of a game without affecting its other areas.
Do not treat a scene restriction as a storage failure
When a HOME screenshot and a Stellar Blade screenshot from a normal scene both work, storage is functioning. A failure confined to one sequence is consistent with Nintendo’s documented application-level restrictions. There is no confirmed Stellar Blade-specific workaround in the official material available for this release, so changing graphics options, photo-mode options, or reinstalling the game should not be presented as a guaranteed fix.
If HOME capture fails too: check storage first
Review and clear Album space
Open Album and remove captures you no longer need, or move them off the console before deleting them. A full capture destination can prevent new screenshots even when the Capture Button and the game are working correctly. After freeing space, return to HOME and make a fresh control capture; do not use an old image as proof that the change worked.

Know the Switch 2 capacity limits
Nintendo’s storage page lists capacity of up to 15,000 screenshots in system memory and up to 15,000 screenshots on a microSD Express card when the console is running system version 20.1.1 or higher. These are screenshot-count limits, not a promise that every Album item uses the same amount of storage. Earlier system versions have lower limits, so confirm the installed version before concluding that the Album is full.
| Capture location | Limit on system version 20.1.1 or higher |
|---|---|
| System memory | Up to 15,000 screenshots |
| microSD Express card | Up to 15,000 screenshots |
Confirm the system version
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Choose System.
- Select System Update.
- Read the installed version and install an offered update before repeating the storage diagnosis.
The 15,000-per-location figures apply to version 20.1.1 or higher. If the console is on an older version, use the limit shown for that version rather than applying the newer number.
Use the supported card format
For Switch 2 capture storage, Nintendo specifies a microSD Express card. An ordinary microSD card is not the supported format for saving new screenshots or copying captures from system memory on Switch 2. If you insert a non-Express card, replacing it with a compatible microSD Express card is the relevant storage correction; simply adding another ordinary microSD card does not address this requirement.

Retest after changing storage
- Delete or move enough captures to create space, or insert a compatible microSD Express card.
- Return to HOME and press the Capture Button once.
- Open Album and verify that the new image has a current timestamp or appears as the newest item.
- Launch Stellar Blade and test a normal playable scene.
If HOME now works but the game still fails only in one sequence, stop pursuing storage fixes and follow the application-restriction path instead.

Isolate the left Joy-Con 2 and the console
Use the undocked test Nintendo recommends
When storage is available and HOME capture still fails, remove the console from the dock and attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers. Test the Capture Button from HOME while the left Joy-Con 2 is attached. This removes docked-play variables and puts the button under the same direct-control conditions Nintendo uses in its troubleshooting path.
Compare a second left Joy-Con 2
- With the console undocked, attach the current left Joy-Con 2.
- From HOME, press Capture and check Album.
- Detach that controller and attach another left Joy-Con 2.
- Repeat the same HOME capture test without changing storage or software between attempts.
If the second controller creates a screenshot, the first left Joy-Con 2 is the isolated variable and needs service. If neither controller works under the same conditions, the console may need service. This A/B test is more informative than repeatedly pressing the same button on one controller.
What a controller result does and does not prove
- A working second controller identifies the original left Joy-Con 2 as the likely cause of the failed input.
- Two failing left Joy-Con 2 controllers point toward the console, provided storage has already been checked.
- A controller that works in HOME but not in one Stellar Blade scene is not evidence of a bad button; that pattern matches a software or sequence restriction.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use the following order so each test answers a different question and you do not lose track of a successful change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Leave the game and test HOME. Press Capture, open Album, and look for a new image.
- If HOME works, test Stellar Blade elsewhere. Leave menus and cutscenes, regain direct control, and capture a normal playable scene.
- If only one scene fails, treat it as restricted content. The official guidance allows that some software or portions of games block captures.
- If HOME fails, inspect Album capacity. Delete or move captures and retry.
- Check the version. Use System Settings > System > System Update; the higher 15,000-screenshot limits require version 20.1.1 or higher.
- Check the card format. Use microSD Express for Switch 2 capture storage; ordinary microSD cards are not the supported format for this function.
- Undock and compare controllers. Test the current left Joy-Con 2, then another left Joy-Con 2 from HOME.
- Choose service based on the comparison. A controller-only failure points to the original left Joy-Con 2; failure with both controllers points toward the console.
Common mistaken fixes and why they waste time
Repeatedly pressing Capture in the same cutscene
A blocked sequence will not become capturable because the button is pressed more times. Move to a different scene and perform a clean single-press test.

Assuming every missing image means the game crashed
Album is the verification point. A game can reject a capture while the console, controller, and storage remain healthy. Conversely, a HOME failure means the game is not the first place to investigate.
Inserting an ordinary microSD card
Switch 2’s documented capture-storage remedy is microSD Express. The older card format does not satisfy that requirement for saving new screenshots or copying captures from system memory.
Applying the newer capacity limit to an older system version
The 15,000-per-location figure is tied to system version 20.1.1 or higher. Check the installed version before using that number to judge whether Album is full.
Changing graphics or photo-mode settings first
Those settings are not documented by Nintendo as a fix for a failed system capture. Establish whether HOME works, then separate a restricted scene from a storage or controller fault.

Reinstalling Stellar Blade as the first response
Official information confirms the Switch 2 release of Stellar Blade Complete Edition but does not document a Stellar Blade-specific screenshot bug, dedicated patch, or reinstall procedure for this symptom. Reinstalling should not replace the HOME, storage, and controller tests.
When to seek service
Arrange left Joy-Con 2 service
Use this route when a second left Joy-Con 2 successfully captures from HOME but the original does not. The controller comparison has isolated the input hardware without relying on Stellar Blade behavior.
Arrange console service
Consider console service when HOME capture fails with available storage, the system version has been checked, the console has been tested undocked, and two left Joy-Con 2 controllers produce the same failure. Keep the result of each test available when contacting support so the failure scope is clear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not seek hardware service for one blocked sequence
If HOME captures and other Stellar Blade scenes work, a single restricted sequence does not establish a hardware defect. Continue the game and capture after returning to a supported scene.
What is confirmed about Stellar Blade on Switch 2
The official information confirms a Stellar Blade Complete Edition release for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo’s general capture troubleshooting rules. It does not document a Stellar Blade-specific screenshot defect, a dedicated patch for failed captures, or a special in-game workaround. That distinction matters: the reliable fix depends on the scope of the failure rather than on an unverified game setting.
Use the HOME control capture as the baseline, then classify the result by scene, storage, and controller. This gives you a reproducible answer: restricted content when only a particular sequence fails, storage or system limits when HOME fails until Album space or card support is corrected, and controller or console service when the hardware comparison isolates the fault.
