What does MissingModsException mean on a Minecraft server?
It is an older Forge-style name for a dependency-resolution failure. A mod has declared that it requires another mod, a particular version range, or a compatible environment, and the loader cannot find a file that satisfies that declaration. Newer Forge and NeoForge builds may phrase the same failure differently, while Fabric uses its metadata to resolve dependencies and conflicts.

The message normally tells you four useful things: which mod made the request, the required mod ID, the accepted version range, and whether the dependency is absent or outside that range. Treat that line as a precise repair instruction, not as a generic crash. Installing a similarly named jar, a file for another Minecraft release, or a build for another loader will not satisfy the requirement.
What should I do first when the server reports a missing mod?
Do not start by downloading random versions. Capture the first actionable dependency line, because the final stack-trace entry usually describes the shutdown rather than the cause.

- Stop the server. Avoid changing files while the process is still writing logs.
- Open the newest evidence. Check the live console output, the newest file in
crash-reports, orlogs/latest.log. - Find the first mod-specific section. Forge-style reports often label it

How do I read the dependency message correctly?
Separate the request from the symptom. The requesting mod is the file that declares a requirement; the required mod ID is the identifier the loader looks up; the version expression defines what counts as compatible.
Forge and NeoForge wording
A Forge or NeoForge report typically lists the requesting mod, a required dependency ID, an accepted range and either a missing value or the version currently installed. Copy the ID exactly, including punctuation and capitalization where shown. The display name in a download page can differ from the ID embedded in a jar.
Fabric wording
Fabric Loader reads each mod’s metadata and checks declared dependencies and conflicts. Look for Incompatible mods found!, then a line ending in which is missing! or a statement that only the wrong version is present. Fabric Documentation describes this metadata model as allowing a mod to declare which other mods it depends on or conflicts with.
Missing versus wrong version
“Missing” means no installed jar advertises the required ID. “Wrong version” means a jar with that ID is present, but its version falls outside the accepted range. These cases need different actions: add the dependency in the first case; replace the existing jar in the second.

How do I verify the server’s compatibility tuple?
Before downloading anything, write down the tuple that every server mod must satisfy: Minecraft version, loader family, loader build and side (server, client or both). A mod file is usable only when its metadata matches the relevant parts of that tuple.

Do not substitute a file merely because its title contains the same mod name. The loader family and Minecraft release are hard constraints. Severoo’s server guidance summarizes the boundary: mods need Fabric, Forge or NeoForge; they do not run on Paper or Purpur, and plugins do not run on a mod loader.
How do I install a missing dependency safely?
Use a trusted project page on Modrinth or CurseForge, select the server’s exact Minecraft version and loader, and place the downloaded jar in the server’s mods folder. Download the dependency named by the log, not a similarly named library.
- Identify the required mod ID. Use the log entry rather than the display title in a launcher.
- Open the dependency’s project page. Filter releases by the server’s Minecraft version and loader family.
- Choose a release inside the printed range. If the error gives a lower and upper bound, both limits matter; the newest release may be outside it.
- Download the server-compatible jar. Avoid source archives, installer programs and client-only variants.
- Back up before changing a working pack. Copy the world,
modsandconfigdirectories to a separate location. - Place one copy in
mods. Keep the filename intact unless the project specifically documents a rename. - Start the server and read the next first error. A newly satisfied dependency can expose another requirement that was not reached during the previous launch.
Fabric’s installation documentation notes that the majority of Fabric mods also require Fabric API. Treat Fabric API as a separate dependency: select its build for the same Minecraft version and add it to the server’s mods folder along with the mod that requests it.
What if the dependency is already installed but the version is rejected?
Replace the existing jar with a release inside the accepted range. Do not leave both versions in the folder: duplicate jars can cause duplicate mod IDs, ambiguous loading or a different dependency error.
Read the range literally
Version expressions can specify minimums, maximums or a bounded interval. A file that is newer than the upper bound is still incompatible, even if it contains more features. Conversely, downgrading below the minimum can remove APIs the requesting mod needs.
Remove the old copy
Stop the server, move the old jar out of mods and put the replacement in its place. Keeping the old file in a backup directory outside the active server folder preserves rollback without allowing the loader to discover two copies.

Check transitive dependencies
A library can itself require another library. After replacing the first file, restart and follow the first new dependency message. Resolve each requirement in order rather than changing several unrelated mods at once.

The underlying repair is the same—satisfy declared metadata—but the files and messages differ by loader.
Forge and NeoForge
- Read the
Missing Modslist in the console or crash report. - Match the listed mod ID and accepted version range exactly.
- Confirm that the jar was built for the server’s Forge or NeoForge family, not Fabric.
- If the list names an installed version, replace that jar rather than adding a second copy.
Fabric
- Use the
Incompatible mods found!section as the starting point. - Install Fabric API when the mod’s metadata requires it, using a build for the same Minecraft version.
- Keep Fabric Loader and every mod on the release line selected by the pack.
- Do not treat a dependency override as a normal fix. Fabric’s documentation says overrides are for modpack developers’ control and should not be used by regular players.
Loader mismatch
If a project offers separate Forge, NeoForge and Fabric downloads, choose only the one matching the server. A successful download is not evidence of compatibility; the loader decides from the jar metadata at startup.
Can client-only mods cause a MissingModsException on a dedicated server?
Yes. A dedicated server can fail on a mod that expects client graphics, screen or rendering classes. Remove client-only minimaps, shaders, visual enhancements and similar interface mods from the server’s mods folder, while keeping them on players’ machines when the project supports that arrangement.
Check the project’s side designation before deleting anything. Content mods that add blocks, items, entities or world generation generally need coordinated installation; a purely visual mod may be client-only. If the log names a missing client class or a mod marked client-only, do not try to satisfy it by adding more server libraries.
Why does the server start but a player still cannot join?
A successful server launch proves only that the server’s own dependency graph is valid. During a connection, the client must present a compatible loader, Minecraft version, content-mod list and mod versions.

- Give every player the server’s exact Minecraft version and loader family.
- Distribute the same content mods and compatible versions used by the server.
- Add client-side copies of required content mods that the join message names as missing.
- Remove files the message identifies as server-incompatible or incompatible with the pack.
- Restart the client after changing jars so the launcher does not reuse an old classpath.
Keep optional cosmetic mods separate from the shared pack. They should not alter the required content set unless their project explicitly states that the server must load them.
What should I do after each restart?
Use an iterative, log-first loop. A dependency graph can contain several unresolved edges, so fixing one error may reveal the next without indicating that the previous repair failed.
- Start the server after one logical change.
- Wait for a clean stop or a new failure message.
- Read the first mod-specific cause in the fresh log.
- Compare it with the saved previous log.
- Resolve only the newly identified dependency, conflict or side mismatch.
When startup completes, let the server reach its normal “done” state and then test a controlled player connection. If the next failure names a different mod, return to the same evidence-gathering process instead of reverting a valid earlier fix.
How can I protect an existing world while fixing the mod list?
Back up before removing, downgrading or replacing any mod that adds content or changes world generation. Keep the world, active mods folder and config directory together so a rollback restores the same data and settings.
- Make a dated copy. Store it outside the live server directory before the first edit.
- Replace jars rather than stacking versions. Move old files to the backup, not back into the active folder.
- Update the loader only when required. A loader change can alter the compatibility set for every mod.
- Record the working tuple. Note Minecraft version, loader family and build, plus each active mod version.
- Distribute one verified set. Players should receive the same resulting files, not a mixture of old and new jars.
Removing a mod can affect blocks, items, entities or generated terrain already stored in a world. If a pack maintainer decides a removal is necessary, retain the rollback copy and test the change on a duplicate world before applying it to the live save.

This order prevents a common mistake: selecting the latest dependency first and discovering later that it violates the mod’s upper version bound or targets a different Minecraft release.
What common mistakes make the error worse?
- Following the final stack-trace line: it often reports shutdown, not the dependency that caused it.
- Matching names instead of IDs: the loader resolves metadata IDs, which may differ from a project’s display name.
- Mixing loader families: Forge, NeoForge and Fabric files are not interchangeable.
- Keeping duplicate jars: two versions of one ID can create a new conflict.

How do I prevent MissingModsException on the next update?
Maintain a manifest for the pack: Minecraft version, loader family and build, each mod ID and version, and whether the file belongs on the server, client or both. Update one dependency group at a time, read the project’s compatibility notes, and keep the previous working set until the new set has started successfully.
When distributing an update, send the same manifest and jars to every player. A server that starts with a coherent graph can still reject a client with one missing content mod or an out-of-range version, so client synchronization is part of the repair rather than a separate afterthought.

Download the Fabric API build matching the server’s Minecraft version and place its jar in the server’s active mods directory. It must be present on every installation whose mods declare it, including the server and any client that needs those APIs.
Why did adding one library reveal another missing dependency?
Loaders resolve a dependency graph, so the first missing node can hide requirements that are checked only after startup progresses. Restart after each logical change and fix the first new mod-specific line rather than changing unrelated files.
Will removing a mod permanently damage my existing world?
It can, especially when the mod supplied blocks, items, entities or world-generation data already saved in the world. Work on a duplicate save first and retain the original world, configuration and mod set for rollback.
