If Modern Warfare 2 crossplay will not find a lobby, first check Activision and your platform’s service status, then verify every player’s Activision account, online entitlement and crossplay setting. After that, isolate your network with a wired test and a complete modem/router restart. NAT or firewall changes come later, because matchmaking weighs connection quality more heavily than most other factors and an outage cannot be repaired from your home network.
Use this order before changing router settings
The order matters. A server outage, maintenance window or platform failure can produce the same symptoms as a bad Wi-Fi connection. Changing ports while a service is unavailable only adds new variables. Work through these checks with every person in the party, not just the player who created it.

- Check service status. Open Activision’s Modern Warfare II support hub and its known-issues and connection-help pages. Check the online-service status for PlayStation Network, Xbox network or the PC service used by the affected player. Activision’s support material includes an article titled “Connecting to a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Game,” listed with an update date of September 15, 2022. Status pages and known-issue lists change, so check them immediately before troubleshooting.
- Confirm that each player is online. Every player should be signed in to the intended Activision account and able to reach the platform’s online services. A console profile that is offline, a lapsed online entitlement or an account stuck at a sign-in prompt can look like a crossplay failure.
- Verify crossplay. Turn crossplay on wherever the platform exposes that control. Have the party leave and reform after changing it. A mixed-platform party cannot be repaired by the host alone if another member has crossplay disabled or is signed into a different Activision account.
- Run one wired test. Connect the affected console or PC directly to the router with Ethernet, preferably a Cat 6 cable. Test matchmaking again before making any advanced changes.
- Restart the network correctly. Close the game, power off the console or PC, switch off the modem and router, leave the network equipment off for at least five minutes, then power the modem and router back on and wait for internet service to return before starting the game.
- Update the router. Install the router manufacturer’s current firmware. Firmware can affect NAT handling, Wi-Fi stability and compatibility with platform services.
- Only then investigate NAT, firewall and DNS. Port forwarding, static addresses and DNS changes require router access and can create new problems if applied blindly. Document every change so it can be reversed.
This sequence separates a service-side problem from a local connection problem while keeping the first actions low-risk and reversible.

“Searching for a match” never finishes
A long search can indicate poor reachability, an outage, a restrictive NAT or a very narrow matchmaking pool. It does not prove that your internet is down. Activision’s 2024 matchmaking white paper says connection quality is the most critical and heavily weighted factor in matchmaking, with time to match the second most critical. If the system cannot find a lobby that meets its connection targets, it may continue searching rather than immediately placing you in a distant, high-latency game.

Playlist availability, recently played maps and modes, skill or performance, input device, platform and voice chat are also considered. A small or unusual population in a specific playlist can therefore create a long search even when a wired connection is healthy. Test a standard, populated playlist once before changing your router.
The search expands to higher latency
Activision defines ping as the round-trip time between your client and a dedicated server. A search that repeatedly widens toward higher latency suggests that the system is struggling to find a suitable nearby lobby, but the symptom alone cannot distinguish congestion, NAT restrictions, an outage or a low-population playlist. Note the approximate ping shown during the search and whether it rises after several minutes; that observation is useful when comparing a wired test with Wi-Fi.
You cannot join one friend
If public matchmaking works but joining a particular friend fails, check the party path first: both accounts should be signed in correctly, both players should be online, and crossplay should be enabled where available. Then compare networks. One player may have a restrictive NAT or firewall while the rest of the group is reachable. Have the affected person host a new party after restarting the game and router; a change in which player hosts can reveal a one-sided reachability problem, although it is not a guaranteed fix.
Players are repeatedly removed from the party
Repeated party disconnects are consistent with an unstable local link, NAT or firewall restrictions, or a service-path problem. Test each player separately on Ethernet if possible. If one player drops while others remain connected, concentrate troubleshooting on that player’s console, PC, router and ISP rather than rebuilding the entire party.
Verify accounts, crossplay and platform access
Check the Activision account used by each player
Have each person open the account screen in the game and confirm that it is the intended Activision account. Do not assume that the console profile, Steam account or another PC launcher account is linked to the account the player expects. A friend request sent to one Activision identity will not reliably reach a different identity used on the same device.

Sign out and back in only after recording which account is linked. If a player cannot reach Activision’s online services at all, solve that sign-in problem before testing crossplay. On PC, Steam’s official Modern Warfare II support page directs technical issues to Activision’s official support surface; use that route for account or game-service problems rather than treating Steam’s store client as the game-service authority.
Confirm online access on the host platform
Each console or PC must be able to reach its platform service. Check the platform status page, account restrictions, parental controls and any subscription or entitlement required for online console play. If the platform reports an outage, wait for recovery and retest before touching NAT settings.
Rebuild the party after every account change
After correcting an account or crossplay setting, close the social menu, leave the party, restart the game and invite everyone again. This clears stale party state. Do not change several accounts and router settings at the same time; you will not know which action altered the result.
Prove whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck
Run a wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison
Use a direct Ethernet connection from the router to the console or PC for one complete matchmaking test. A Cat 6 cable is a simple physical test; it does not require special configuration. If matchmaking becomes reliable on Ethernet, the wireless path is the leading suspect. Improve router placement, reduce interference and use a wired connection for play when practical. If Ethernet makes no difference, continue with service, NAT and ISP checks rather than repeatedly replacing Wi-Fi hardware.
Restart modem and router for a full five minutes
Close Modern Warfare 2 and shut down the gaming device. Turn off the modem and router, leave them without power for at least five minutes, then power the modem on first. Wait until its internet indicator is stable, power on the router, wait for Wi-Fi or wired service to return, and only then start the console or PC. This clears temporary state and forces a fresh connection to the ISP; it does not repair an external outage.

Keep firmware current
Use the router’s administration interface to check for firmware updates. Read the manufacturer’s release notes when available and keep a record of the previous version and any custom settings. Firmware updates can reset port rules, DHCP reservations or parental-control policies, so recheck those settings before testing the game.

NAT and firewall rules determine whether your device can establish and maintain the connections required for parties and game sessions. They may improve reachability, but they do not lower the physical distance to a dedicated server or guarantee a match. Port forwarding also exposes services to more inbound traffic, so it should be a measured, reversible step rather than the default response to a long search.
PlayStation’s published port guidance
Sony’s PS5 connection guidance for error NW-102650-4 lists the following ports and recommends contacting the ISP for port-opening help:

These values are PlayStation guidance. They are not proof that the same rules apply to Xbox, Steam or Battle.net, and they are not a guarantee of a successful MWII connection. Router interfaces differ, and some ISPs use carrier-grade NAT that prevents ordinary inbound forwarding from working. If the router has no public IPv4 address, ask the ISP whether carrier-grade NAT is in use and whether a public address or supported alternative is available.
Use a static local address only when you need one
Port rules must point to the correct device. A DHCP reservation on the router is usually easier to maintain than manually entering a static address on the console or PC, but the exact menu names vary by router. If you do set a static address, record the IP address, subnet, gateway and DNS values first. An incorrect gateway or duplicate address can disconnect the device from the internet.

Change one rule, then test
- Record the router’s current NAT, firewall and port-forwarding configuration.
- Create a reservation for the affected console or PC, or confirm its existing local address.
- Apply only the platform guidance that matches your device and router documentation.
- Restart the router and gaming device, then test party joining and public matchmaking separately.
- Remove the rule if it has no measurable effect or causes instability.
Do not place a console or PC in a router’s unrestricted DMZ as a first-line fix. That setting changes the exposure of the entire device and can hide the real cause without improving latency.
DNS changes are a temporary diagnostic
PlayStation’s guidance suggests temporary DNS changes as one troubleshooting option. DNS affects how names are resolved; it does not shorten the network path to a game server once a session is established. If you test a different DNS service, change only the DNS fields, record the original values, restart the device and compare results. Restore the original settings if there is no clear improvement.

Activision’s matchmaking explanation lists more than network quality. The system considers playlist diversity, recently played maps and modes, skill or performance, input device, platform and voice chat. These dimensions interact with the available player population at that moment.
Connection quality is prioritized over a quick but distant lobby
Activision states: “Connection is the most critical and heavily weighted factor in the matchmaking process.” The same 2024 white paper identifies time to match as the second most critical factor. In practical terms, the search tries to find a lobby with an acceptable connection before simply filling a slot as fast as possible.

Skill targets loosen faster than ping targets
Activision says skill targets are loosened faster than delta-ping targets while a lobby is being formed. The system therefore gives connection quality priority as the search expands. A narrow playlist, an uncommon input-device combination or a small cross-platform population can make that process take longer without indicating a fault in your router.

Use a broad test playlist
For diagnosis, choose a standard playlist with a large expected population, avoid repeatedly backing out of the search, and test at a different time if the playlist is regionally small. If the broad playlist finds a match but the original playlist does not, the result points toward population or playlist constraints rather than a basic crossplay failure.

The table separates reachability fixes from latency fixes. Ethernet and a restart can stabilize a link; port forwarding may allow required connections; none of these actions guarantees a match or changes the geographic distance to a server.
When to contact the ISP or Activision
Ask the ISP for help when
- Your router reports a private or carrier-grade WAN address and port forwarding has no effect.
- Several devices lose connectivity, show packet loss or experience large latency spikes outside the game.
- You need help opening platform ports listed in the platform’s own guidance.
- The modem repeatedly re-registers, drops upstream service or cannot retain a stable connection after a restart.
Give the ISP the time of the failure, whether Ethernet changes it, the router model and the WAN address type. Ask whether maintenance, congestion or carrier-grade NAT affects your line.

- Activision and the platform report normal service, your account reaches online menus, and the problem persists on a wired connection after a complete restart.
- Only Modern Warfare II fails while other online services work normally.
- An account-linking, authentication or game-service error prevents you from joining any party.
Include your platform, launcher, region, Activision account identifier where requested, exact error text, approximate time, NAT status and the result of the wired test. Do not publish account credentials or router passwords in a support ticket.
A repeatable test log prevents circular troubleshooting
Record one line for each test: date and time, platform, host, playlist, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, NAT status, approximate search ping, whether the party stayed together, and the single change made. Test public matchmaking and joining a friend separately. A result such as “Ethernet, standard playlist, match in two minutes” is more useful than “it seemed better.” If a change makes no difference across several attempts, restore it before trying another branch.
What a successful fix looks like
A successful result is not merely reaching the lobby screen once. Confirm that the same party can join, remain together through the loading screen, complete a match without repeated disconnects, and search again afterward. Then repeat the test on the original connection type if you changed from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. If only Ethernet works, keep using the wired path or continue diagnosing wireless interference; do not assume a port change solved the underlying issue.
