Activision says PC crashes are most common during launch and public Multiplayer, and it does not identify one universal fix.
Use this recovery sequence first
Do these checks in order. Stop when the game launches reliably; changing several things at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.

- Close the game and Steam completely. Exit Modern Warfare 4, quit Steam from its menu, and restart the PC. Activision’s immediate guidance after a freeze or crash is to restart before trying again.
- Compare your PC with the official baseline. Check 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, a supported Intel or AMD processor with AVX, at least 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, an SSD with 115 GB available, and a supported graphics setup. The recommended Multiplayer configuration uses 16 GB of RAM and a stronger GPU than the minimum tier.
- Install the launch-era driver for your GPU vendor. Activision lists AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. Use the package matching the graphics hardware actually installed in the computer.
- Check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Both are required for the PC version. If either is disabled or unavailable, use Activision’s Secure Attestation Wizard and BIOS guidance before attempting more game-level fixes.
- Close software that can interfere with boot. Disable overlays, input-remapping utilities, recording tools, and other background applications, including ones that are not visibly open. Activision specifically warns that these programs can disrupt the boot process.
- Confirm the Steam installation and update state. In Steam, open Library, select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and choose Install if it is not installed. Let Steam and the game complete every pending platform or content update before launching.
- Escalate a persistent problem. Check Activision’s live known-issues tracker. If your symptom is not listed, submit the Activision PC Crash Report and a bug report with the details requested by those forms.
Check the four requirements that most often explain a failed launch
A Play button that immediately returns, a crash before the main menu, and repeated freezes can all result from a requirement or platform-state mismatch. Compare your system across these four axes.

Activision and Steam published these launch-era figures in 2026. They are requirements for the PC release, not a guarantee that every configuration will be stable under every workload.

Verify Windows is 64-bit
Open Windows Settings and view the system’s About information. The system type should identify a 64-bit operating system. A 32-bit installation cannot satisfy the stated requirement even if the processor itself is capable of 64-bit operation.
Check AVX support on the processor
Modern Warfare 4 requires a supported Intel or AMD CPU with AVX. If you are unsure of the exact processor model or instruction support, identify the model in Windows’ system information and compare it with the processor manufacturer’s specifications. Do not treat clock speed alone as proof that the requirement is met.
Measure free SSD capacity, not just total drive size
The launch requirement is 115 GB available on an SSD. A drive advertised as 1 TB can still fail the check when other games, updates, or temporary files consume the free space. Leave additional headroom for updates rather than targeting exactly 115 GB.
Update the graphics driver to the listed launch versions
Activision’s launch-era driver list is vendor-specific. Match the number to the GPU vendor, not to the computer manufacturer or the Steam client.

Identify your GPU in Windows before downloading anything. Installing a package for the wrong vendor will not satisfy the game and can create a separate graphics problem. After the installation completes, restart Windows and test the game before re-enabling overlays or recording software.
These are the versions Activision named for the launch-era PC support guidance in 2026. Driver numbering changes over time, so if Activision later publishes a replacement, follow the newer official listing rather than forcing an older package.
Fix a Play-button failure or instant return to Steam
If you click Play and Steam quickly returns to the Play button with no usable game window, treat the symptom as a prerequisite or boot-process failure first.
Confirm TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot
Activision states that both TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required to play Modern Warfare 4. Enter your motherboard’s UEFI/BIOS setup and check that the firmware security settings are enabled. The exact menu names vary by motherboard and whether the system is configured for legacy boot.

Windows can also show whether the security components are recognized. Press Win+R, enter tpm.msc, and check that a TPM is present and reports readiness. To inspect Secure Boot, open msinfo32 and read the Secure Boot State entry. These checks show the state Windows sees; they do not replace the firmware configuration step.
If the game still rejects the configuration, use Activision’s Secure Attestation Wizard and its BIOS instructions. Take care when changing firmware options: record the original settings, follow your motherboard vendor’s documentation, and do not change unrelated boot or storage settings.
Allow every update to finish
A partial Steam installation or interrupted content update can make the launcher close immediately. Open Steam > Library > Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and use Install when prompted. Keep Steam open until the download, allocation, and update stages have completed. Start the game only after Steam shows that no update is pending.
Remove boot conflicts
Before pressing Play, close third-party overlays, input-remapping applications, capture or recording tools, and other utilities that hook into games. Activision warns that these applications may interfere even when their windows are closed. Test with the smallest practical set of background software, then add tools back one at a time after a successful launch.

Handle freezes and crashes after the game opens
Activision reports that most PC crashes occur while launching or while playing public Multiplayer matches. The location of the failure helps prioritize the next check.
Freeze during startup or at the first loading screen
- Restart Windows and Steam before another attempt.
- Confirm the GPU driver, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, AVX CPU, DirectX 12, RAM, and SSD requirements.
- Close overlays, remappers, recorders, and background utilities.
- Wait for Steam and Modern Warfare 4 to finish updating.
If the same startup freeze returns after those checks, compare the exact symptom with Activision’s known-issues tracker rather than repeatedly reinstalling or changing unrelated Windows settings.
Crash or freeze in public Multiplayer
Public Multiplayer is specifically identified by Activision as a common crash point. First repeat the restart, driver, requirement, and background-software checks. Note whether the failure occurs while joining a match, during a map load, or after play begins; that detail makes a crash report more useful and helps you match the symptom to a known issue.

Record what was happening immediately before the desktop appeared: mode, map or menu, approximate time since launch, and whether an overlay or recording function was active. Reproduce the problem with those tools disabled. If it persists, submit the Activision PC Crash Report and bug report instead of assuming that a generic reinstall is the only answer.

Steam installation and update checklist
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
- Choose Install when the title is not installed.
- Select an SSD with at least 115 GB free.
- Allow Steam to complete the base installation and all game updates.
- Wait for any Steam client or platform update to finish before starting the game.
- Launch once with overlays and recording tools closed.
If the installation repeatedly pauses or fails, first make enough SSD space and restart Steam and Windows. A platform update that has not finished can leave the game in an intermediate state, so complete that update before diagnosing a crash.
What to do when the official checks do not solve it
Search the living known-issues list
Activision maintains a running list of issues identified or reported for Modern Warfare 4 that are under investigation or scheduled to be fixed. Search it using the symptom and location of failure, such as startup, public Multiplayer, or an immediate return to Steam. A matching entry means the issue may require an official fix rather than another local setting change.
Submit a complete PC crash report
Use Activision’s PC Crash Report path when the game still crashes after the prerequisite and software checks. Include your Windows edition, CPU and GPU models, RAM amount, SSD free space, driver version, whether TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled, the mode in which the crash occurred, and the steps that reproduce it. Precise details help separate a hardware requirement failure from a known game defect.

If the known-issues list has no matching entry, submit a bug report through Activision’s reporting path. Describe one reproducible symptom per report and state which troubleshooting steps you already completed. Do not omit a failure simply because the game sometimes launches; intermittent crashes are still useful when the trigger and frequency are described accurately.

Limits of the troubleshooting advice
Activision’s guidance describes several possible causes and a staged process; it does not publish a general Steam crash-rate statistic or promise one fix that resolves every PC configuration. Meeting the baseline requirements, updating the listed driver, and enabling the required security features remove common blockers, but a persistent crash can still be a game defect or another configuration-specific problem. That is why the known-issues tracker and reporting forms are the final steps rather than optional extras.
