How to Fix Motion Sickness on Steam Frame and Quest 3

Stop as soon as symptoms begin, then correct the mismatch between what your eyes see and how your body moves. On either Steam Frame or Quest 3, the most effective sequence is to pause until you feel normal, refit the headset and IPD, switch to teleportation and snap turning, reduce peripheral motion, and run a stable frame rate. Start again with short, low-motion sessions. If symptoms are serious or persist, seek medical advice.

Why Steam Frame and Quest 3 can make you feel sick

VR motion sickness, also called visually induced motion sickness, happens when visual motion conflicts with the motion your body senses. Your eyes may report that you are accelerating, turning, or moving through a room while your inner ear and muscles report that you are sitting still. Meta’s Horizon OS Developers comfort guidance, updated December 17, 2025, describes the cause directly: “Motion sickness can occur when there is a mismatch between what the user sees and how they move.”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The trigger is not limited to one headset. A game can create the conflict with smooth artificial movement, rapid acceleration, a moving camera, inconsistent rendering, or a poorly fitted display. The same person may tolerate a stationary puzzle game but feel ill within minutes of a smooth locomotion game. A different headset may change the severity by changing fit, image clarity, latency, or the available comfort controls, but neither Meta nor Valve documents one headset as a universal cure.

Symptoms that mean you should stop

  • Nausea or a queasy feeling
  • Dizziness, vertigo, or loss of balance
  • Headache or eye strain
  • Sweating, pallor, or unusual warmth
  • Disorientation or difficulty judging the real room

Do not try to “push through” these symptoms. They can intensify after you remove the headset, and disorientation raises the chance of hitting furniture or falling.

What to do immediately when sickness starts

  1. Remove the headset and sit down. Stop the application rather than continuing to a checkpoint or match.
  2. Let the symptoms fully clear. Meta’s Quest Health and Safety Warnings say: “Do not use the VR System until all symptoms have completely subsided for several hours.” Treat that as a minimum recovery window, not a challenge to resume sooner.
  3. Check the real room. Keep the headset and controllers within reach, use your boundary system, and avoid walking while dizzy.
  4. Record the trigger. Note the app, movement mode, camera effects, refresh-rate setting, and how long you played. This makes the next test controlled instead of random.
  5. Get medical advice when appropriate. Meta’s safety guidance says: “See a doctor if you experience serious or persistent symptoms.” Seek urgent care for severe or unusual symptoms rather than assuming they are ordinary VR discomfort.

A safe reset for either headset

Before changing advanced settings, use this short reset. It addresses the causes that are easiest to miss and works for both Steam Frame and Quest 3.

1. Make the image single and sharp

Put the headset on straight, tighten it enough that it does not slide, and adjust the lens position until virtual objects appear as one clear image. Double vision, blur, or a constantly shifting sweet spot forces your eyes to work harder and can turn tolerable movement into nausea.

On Quest 3, adjust the IPD until text and objects look natural rather than stretched, doubled, or uncomfortable. Meta says that when IPD matches, virtual content appears more natural and comfortable, minimizing visual strain and helping users maintain focus. Steam Frame users should likewise center the display and correct any fit that causes one eye to see a noticeably different image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start with stationary content

Choose a seated or standing experience with little or no artificial movement. Avoid vehicles, free-flying scenes, smooth strafing, roller-coaster effects, and camera rides during the reset. Meta advises people who are new to VR or have a history of motion sickness to begin with comfortable apps that involve little movement, then progress gradually.

3. Keep the room safe

Use the headset’s boundary or play-area system, clear cables and furniture, and keep a stable chair nearby. Visual discomfort can make the room feel unfamiliar even though the trigger is virtual. A safe physical setup prevents a brief episode from becoming a collision.

4. Try a stable real-world reference

A fan aimed gently at your face, or another consistent reference from the physical room, is a reasonable comfort experiment. It is a practical suggestion rather than a result established by the cited Meta or Valve guidance, so stop using it if it distracts you or fails to help.

Quest 3 settings that usually help

Quest 3 comfort controls are generally chosen inside each application. Menus vary, so look for movement, locomotion, camera, comfort, or accessibility options before you start a level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose teleportation first

Select teleport movement instead of smooth locomotion whenever the app offers it. Teleportation moves you in discrete jumps without continuously sliding the scene across your view. Meta’s comfort guidance says to “Favor options like teleportation and snap turning, and offer customizable settings for user preferences and abilities.”

If teleportation is unavailable, choose the slowest movement speed and avoid automatic forward motion. Do not begin by testing sprinting, flying, swimming, or vehicle sections; those systems add sustained optic flow and acceleration.

Use snap turning

Snap turning rotates the view in discrete increments instead of sweeping the entire scene through your peripheral vision. Use the smallest comfortable angle and disable smooth turning while you are acclimating. Avoid games that rotate the camera automatically during attacks, climbing, cutscenes, or movement unless the game provides a comfort substitute.

Enable a vignette during smooth movement

If you must use smooth locomotion, turn on the game’s vignette or peripheral-reduction setting. A vignette darkens or narrows the edges of the image while you move, reducing the amount of optic flow reaching your peripheral vision. Meta’s locomotion guidance lists this as a way to reduce discomfort. Increase the vignette strength if a mild setting does not help, then test again for only a short period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep rendering consistent

Do not trade a stable frame rate for a sharper image. Meta’s locomotion best practices specifically recommend maintaining a consistent frame rate to prevent judder, which can contribute to discomfort. If a game stutters when effects appear, lower its graphics or performance option before increasing movement speed or session length.

Use peripheral passthrough when available

Some experiences can show passthrough around the edges of your virtual view. Meta describes passthrough at the edges of the field of view as an effective comfort strategy because it provides a stable reference to the physical environment. Enable it when the application supports it, especially for smooth movement or turning.

Check the Quest Store comfort information

Before installing or launching an unfamiliar app, read its comfort information in the Quest Store. Meta’s safety document says the information can cover camera motion, player motion, and disorienting content or effects. Use that information to avoid high-motion content during your first sessions and to choose games with the controls you need.

Steam Frame and SteamVR settings

Steam Frame troubleshooting starts with software health, then moves to per-application video settings. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which adjustment affects your symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update before you tune

  1. Install any available Steam Frame software or device updates.
  2. If the headset streams from a PC, update Steam and SteamVR.
  3. Restart the headset, the PC, and any streaming software after updating.
  4. Run a stationary or low-motion application first to verify that the display is stable.

These are Valve’s first troubleshooting steps. A setting experiment is unreliable when an old runtime, headset component, or streaming session is already dropping frames.

Open per-application video controls

In SteamVR, open VR Settings > Video > Per-Application Video Settings. Select the affected application and test a lower resolution or a refresh rate that the system can sustain consistently. Apply one change, run a brief test, and stop at the first symptom.

Understand the documented refresh-rate examples

Steam Frame’s documented default is 72 Hz when no minimum refresh rate is specified. Developers can suggest 90 Hz or another value in vrpreferences.json. The documentation includes an example using 2160×2160 resolution, 90 Hz, half-framerate throttling to 45 FPS, and motion smoothing off. Those are configurable examples, not universal prescriptions for every computer, application, or user.

If 90 Hz causes dropped frames, a consistent 72 Hz experience may feel better than a nominally faster mode that repeatedly misses its frame deadline. Conversely, if your system can hold a higher rate without judder, the higher rate may be preferable. The deciding test is stable presentation without symptoms, not the largest number in the menu.

Test motion smoothing carefully

Steam Frame preferences document motion smoothing modes of off, on, and always-on per application. Motion smoothing synthesizes or reprojects frames when an application cannot deliver the target rate. It may reduce visible judder for some users, while artifacts or repeated corrections may bother others. Test it cautiously: compare one short run with it off and one with it on, keeping resolution and refresh rate unchanged. Do not assume that always-on is automatically more comfortable.

How to tell whether judder is the problem

Judder is an uneven visual cadence: the world appears to hitch, double, or advance in irregular steps even though your input is steady. It often appears when the application misses its refresh deadline, when streaming bandwidth fluctuates, or when resolution is too high for the graphics hardware.

  • If the image is sharp but movement hitches, lower resolution or graphics load first.
  • If movement is smooth at first and then breaks up in complex scenes, use a lower per-application resolution or a refresh rate your system can hold continuously.
  • If artifacts remain after the frame rate is stable, compare motion smoothing off and on rather than changing several options together.
  • If symptoms occur only during a particular camera effect, keep the video settings stable and disable that effect in the application.

Restart after major changes, then retest the same scene. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to know whether resolution, refresh rate, smoothing, or the application itself caused the improvement.

Steam Frame versus Quest 3: what actually matters

Do not judge comfort by the headset name alone. Compare the application and runtime controls available to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comfort factor Quest 3 Steam Frame and SteamVR What to check
Movement mode Apps may offer teleportation, snap turning, and other comfort choices. Movement choices depend on the application; SteamVR adds video controls rather than forcing one locomotion method. Choose teleportation and snap turning before smooth movement.
Peripheral reduction Apps may offer a vignette; supported experiences may provide passthrough around the field of view. Check the application’s comfort options and any supported runtime features. Use a vignette or peripheral reference during smooth movement.
Frame consistency Meta recommends a consistent frame rate to prevent judder. Per-application resolution and minimum-refresh-rate controls let you tune for a sustainable rate. Prefer steady delivery over maximum resolution or refresh-rate claims.
Fit and eye comfort Adjust the headset and IPD until the image is single, natural, and clear. Center the display and correct fit so the image does not shift or blur. Fix optical clarity before changing locomotion settings.
Content information Quest Store comfort information can describe camera motion, player motion, and disorienting effects. Review the application’s own comfort documentation and test in a controlled scene. Start with low-motion content and increase exposure gradually.

Meta and Valve document these controls, but neither source supports a universal claim that Steam Frame or Quest 3 prevents motion sickness for every user. A comfortable result depends on the person, the fit, the application, and whether the system maintains a stable image.

A gradual return plan

Once symptoms have been absent for several hours, return in small, repeatable tests rather than attempting a normal-length session.

  1. Session one: use a seated, stationary experience with a clear image. Stop immediately if any symptom returns.
  2. Session two: use teleportation and snap turning for a short period. Keep the same headset fit and avoid changing video settings.
  3. Session three: add brief smooth movement with a vignette, using the slowest comfortable speed.
  4. Later sessions: increase only one factor at a time: duration, movement speed, smooth turning, or visual complexity.

There is no guaranteed schedule that works for everyone. The useful rule is to end a test while you still feel normal, not after nausea has built up. If the same title repeatedly triggers symptoms despite a clear image, stable frame rate, teleportation, and a vignette, choose different content rather than forcing adaptation.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“I feel sick immediately when I start moving.”

Switch from smooth locomotion to teleportation, disable smooth turning, and enable a vignette. Confirm that the headset is fitted correctly and that the image is single. If the application has no comfort controls, use stationary content or stop using that title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I feel fine until a busy scene appears.”

Suspect frame instability. On Steam Frame, lower the application’s resolution in VR Settings > Video > Per-Application Video Settings and select a refresh rate the system can sustain. On Quest 3, lower the application’s performance or graphics setting if available. Retest the same busy scene.

“The world looks blurry or doubled.”

Refit the headset and adjust Quest 3 IPD, or recenter and reposition Steam Frame. Do not continue tuning motion settings while the optical image is wrong. Persistent double vision outside VR warrants medical advice.

“Motion smoothing made it worse.”

Return the affected Steam Frame application to motion smoothing off, then compare a stable lower-resolution profile. If artifacts remain, keep smoothing off and prioritize a frame rate the system can deliver consistently.

“I am dizzy after removing the headset.”

Stop for the day, sit or lie down safely, and wait until symptoms have completely subsided for several hours before using VR again. Follow Meta’s advice to see a doctor for serious or persistent symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

The fastest path to a more comfortable Steam Frame or Quest 3 session is conservative: stop at the first symptom, recover fully, correct fit and IPD, choose teleportation and snap turning, reduce peripheral motion, and make frame delivery stable. On Steam Frame, update the software and tune each application through SteamVR’s per-application video settings; on Quest 3, use the app’s comfort controls and read its Store comfort information. Neither headset eliminates the underlying visual-motion conflict, so gradual exposure and careful content selection remain essential.
