Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with a wired USB keyboard and mouse connected directly to the Xbox. If they work on the Xbox home screen but not inside a game, the hardware may be fine: Xbox enables mouse and keyboard input only in selected games and apps, and each title decides whether to accept it.
Xbox’s accessibility guidance states: “Use wired USB mice and keyboards for navigation in select games and apps, and—with a keyboard—getting around on XBOX.” Use the sequence below to separate a supported-game setting from a bad cable, exhausted battery, failed receiver, USB-port problem, or defective peripheral.

First identify which kind of failure you have
The quickest diagnosis comes from comparing two places: the Xbox dashboard and the game itself. Try moving the pointer or typing in a dashboard search field, text box, or other area where a keyboard is normally accepted. Then test the same device in the title that prompted the problem.

| Neither keyboard nor mouse works anywhere on Xbox | The console may not be receiving power or USB data, or the peripheral, cable, receiver, or port may have failed. | Use the direct-connection, port, power, physical-inspection, and second-device tests in the order below. |
| The keyboard works on the dashboard but not in one game | The game may not support mouse and keyboard input, or it may require an in-game control setting. | Check that title’s current controls or accessibility documentation and its input menu before replacing hardware. |
| The mouse works but the keyboard does not, or vice versa | One peripheral, cable, battery, receiver channel, or USB connection may be at fault. The game may also support only one input type. | Test each device independently on Xbox and on another compatible device. |
| A wireless set fails while a wired set works | The receiver, batteries, receiver placement, or model-specific compatibility is the variable. | Use the supplied receiver directly in the Xbox, check power, and test another USB port. Do not assume Bluetooth pairing is supported. |
| A peripheral also fails on another computer or compatible device | The peripheral or its cable is probably defective. | Repair or replace that device rather than changing Xbox settings. |
Why the Xbox home screen can work when a game does not
Xbox support is not a blanket promise that every game accepts a mouse and keyboard. The console can recognize a USB device for dashboard navigation while an individual title ignores those inputs. Support is selected by the game or app, so a successful home-screen test proves recognition, not universal game compatibility.

Even a supported title can require a menu change. Look for an Input, Controls, Keyboard and Mouse, or Accessibility section in the game’s own settings. Some games automatically switch when they detect a device; others require you to select keyboard-and-mouse controls. The exact label and location vary by title and can change with an update, which is why the game’s current documentation is the authority.
This distinction also explains why buying a different mouse does not fix every case. If the dashboard accepts typing and pointer movement, replacing hardware cannot add support that the game developer has not implemented.
Use a wired USB baseline
Wired USB is the clearest starting point because it is the connection type Xbox explicitly names for mouse and keyboard navigation. A direct cable removes battery charge, wireless pairing, receiver placement, and model-specific radio behavior from the diagnosis.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn on the Xbox and leave the game closed while you test the dashboard.
- Plug the keyboard directly into an Xbox USB port. Do not use a USB hub, dock, monitor pass-through, or extension during this test.
- Connect the mouse directly to another Xbox USB port if one is available. If you have only one free port, test the devices one at a time.
- Open a dashboard search or text-entry area and type a short phrase. Move the mouse and click a selectable item.
- If one port gives no response, move the same device to another Xbox USB port and repeat the test. A port change is more informative when you keep the device, cable, and test screen the same.
- Once the dashboard responds, launch a title that explicitly supports mouse and keyboard and inspect that title’s input settings.
If the direct wired test succeeds, keep that setup as your control case while investigating a wireless device. If it fails, continue with the hardware checks rather than assuming the game is at fault.
Follow the complete troubleshooting sequence
1. Confirm support for the exact game or app
Before opening the console or buying an adapter, check whether the title supports mouse and keyboard on Xbox. Xbox describes support as applying to “select games and apps,” not all software. Read the title’s current control or accessibility documentation and look for an in-game input selector.
Use a known supported title for testing when possible. If the keyboard works in the dashboard and in that supported title but not in the original game, the original game’s support or settings are the leading explanation. Report that behavior to the game’s support channel if its documentation says the feature should work.

2. Remove every intermediary
Disconnect a USB hub and plug the peripheral into the console itself. Hubs can add power and data variables that make a healthy keyboard appear dead. Also remove docks, monitor USB ports, KVM switches, and unverified extension cables while diagnosing. Reconnect only the keyboard or mouse under test, then repeat the dashboard check.
3. Try another Xbox USB port
Move the same device to a different console USB port. Microsoft’s hardware troubleshooting guidance lists another USB port and removal of a USB hub among the first checks for an unresponsive input device. Test one change at a time so you know whether the port or the peripheral made the difference.
If a device works in one port but not another, use the working port for now and treat the other port as a console hardware issue. Do not force a loose connector or continue using a port that visibly damages plugs.
4. Check power, cable, connector, and physical condition
Rechargeable keyboards, mice, and wireless receivers can stop responding when their batteries are empty. Charge rechargeable units fully or install fresh batteries according to the device instructions. A device that has lights does not necessarily have a working USB data connection, so continue the test even if an indicator is illuminated.
Inspect the entire cable for cuts, sharp kinks, crushed sections, or a plug that moves in its housing. Check the Xbox-side connector and the device-side socket for looseness, bent contacts, dirt, or visible damage. For a mouse, make sure the sensor is not blocked and is on a surface where it can track. For a keyboard, check for stuck, obstructed, or liquid-damaged keys. Microsoft’s hardware guidance identifies power, cable condition, blocked sensors, and blocked keys as useful first checks.
5. Test each peripheral on another compatible device
Disconnect the keyboard and mouse from Xbox and test them separately on a computer or another compatible device. A separate test distinguishes an input-device failure from a console or game-compatibility problem.

- If the keyboard fails on the second device, concentrate on its cable, batteries, receiver, or internal hardware.
- If the mouse fails on the second device, inspect its cable, sensor, batteries, receiver, or internal hardware.
- If both work elsewhere, return to Xbox port testing and supported-title testing; the peripherals are less likely to be the cause.
Test one device at a time and use a known-working USB port on the second device. This avoids mistaking a second computer’s port or a shared hub for proof that the peripheral is healthy.
6. Troubleshoot a wireless receiver separately
A wireless keyboard or mouse that uses a USB receiver is not the same as a Bluetooth-only device. Find the receiver supplied with the peripheral and connect it directly to the Xbox, without a hub. Confirm that the keyboard or mouse has charged batteries, is switched on, and is using the receiver intended for that model.
Repeat the alternate-port test with the receiver itself. Then test the receiver and peripheral together on another compatible device. If the set works elsewhere but not on Xbox, the remaining variables are Xbox support, the console port, and the particular receiver model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not infer that Bluetooth pairing is available merely because a keyboard or mouse advertises Bluetooth. The available Xbox guidance does not provide a complete Bluetooth compatibility matrix for every model. Check the exact device documentation and the game’s Xbox support information before treating Bluetooth as a supported solution.
7. Retest inside a supported title
After the dashboard recognizes the device, close and reopen the supported game, then open its controls or accessibility menu. Select keyboard-and-mouse input if the title offers that choice. Test a simple action such as moving the cursor, looking around, or typing in a text field that the game documents as supported.
If the game still ignores input while the dashboard and another supported title respond, record the game version, console model, connected device type, and exact setting you used when contacting the game’s support team. That information lets support distinguish an unsupported title from a title-specific bug.

8. Check the console side only after the peripheral passes elsewhere
When a keyboard or mouse works on another device but no Xbox USB port recognizes it, check the console’s current software status and official Xbox troubleshooting options. Keep the device connected directly while testing. If another known-working wired keyboard or mouse also fails in every port and the dashboard shows no response, the remaining fault is more likely on the console side than in the original peripheral or game.
Wired USB, wireless receiver, and Bluetooth: what changes?
| Connection | What it removes or adds | How to test on Xbox | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | Uses a cable and avoids batteries, pairing, and receiver radio links. | Connect directly to the console, test another USB port, and verify dashboard input. | Xbox explicitly describes wired USB mice and keyboards for navigation in select games and apps. |
| Wireless USB receiver | Adds battery charge, a receiver, receiver-to-device pairing, and another USB connection. | Use the receiver supplied with the device, connect it directly, check batteries, switch ports, and test the set elsewhere. | Behavior depends on the exact receiver and device; there is no universal guarantee for every model. |
| Bluetooth | Adds Bluetooth discovery, pairing, radio compatibility, and device-profile variables without a USB receiver. | Check the exact device documentation and Xbox/game support before attempting pairing. | The available official Xbox material does not establish a complete Bluetooth compatibility matrix. |
For a dependable baseline, wired USB is therefore the least ambiguous option. Wireless can be convenient, but every additional component creates another possible failure point. A successful wireless test on a computer does not by itself prove Xbox support.
Separate dashboard navigation from in-game controls
Use this two-column diagnosis when the symptoms are confusing:
| Dashboard result | Game result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| No response | No response | Start with direct connection, another port, hub removal, power, physical inspection, and a second-device test. |
| Response | No response in one title | Check that title’s support status and input menu. Do not assume the peripheral is defective. |
| Response | Response in a supported title | The original title, its settings, or its current version is the likely difference. |
| Response from keyboard only | Mouse unavailable | Test the mouse alone on another device and verify that the game supports mouse input separately from keyboard input. |
| Response from mouse only | Keyboard unavailable | Test the keyboard alone on another device and verify that the game supports keyboard input separately from mouse input. |
This test prevents a common mistake: treating a game’s deliberate input policy as a console hardware failure. The dashboard is useful as a recognition test, but the title remains the final authority on whether those controls are implemented.

“It worked yesterday, but now nothing responds.”
Begin with power and physical checks rather than changing game settings. Recharge the device or replace batteries, reseat the cable or receiver, and inspect for damage. Then test a different Xbox USB port without a hub. If the same peripheral also fails on another device, hardware repair or replacement is the appropriate path.
“The keyboard types on Xbox, but the mouse does nothing.”
Keep the keyboard connected and test the mouse by itself. Check the mouse cable, sensor, surface, battery, and receiver. If the mouse works on another device, verify that the game supports mouse input; some titles may implement keyboard support without accepting mouse controls.

“The mouse moves in the dashboard, but aiming does not work.”
Dashboard movement confirms that Xbox can see the mouse. It does not confirm that the game accepts mouse input. Check the game’s control or accessibility documentation and select the appropriate input mode if one is provided.
“A wireless keyboard has no USB cable.”
Use its supplied USB receiver if it has one, connect that receiver directly to Xbox, and repeat the battery and port checks. If it is Bluetooth-only, consult the exact model’s Xbox compatibility information; Bluetooth support cannot be assumed from the product description alone.
“Both devices work on a computer but not on Xbox.”
Use a direct wired connection if available, remove every hub or dock, and test each Xbox USB port. If a known-working wired device also fails in the dashboard, investigate console software or hardware support. If the dashboard works but the game does not, return to the title-specific support check.

“The devices fail everywhere.”
Do not spend time changing Xbox game settings. Confirm the cable, charge or batteries, receiver, connector, and physical condition, then repair or replace the failed peripheral. A replacement should be treated as a wired USB baseline, not as a promise that every Xbox game accepts mouse and keyboard controls.
When replacement makes sense
Replace a keyboard or mouse only after the basic isolation tests identify the device as the failing component: it remains unresponsive on another compatible device, its cable or connector is visibly damaged, its battery or receiver is known-good but the unit still fails, or only that peripheral fails while another works in the same Xbox port.
A wired USB replacement is the most straightforward category for Xbox troubleshooting because it avoids wireless receiver and Bluetooth variables. Even then, confirm the game’s support before purchase. No replacement can make an unsupported title accept mouse and keyboard input.
Final checklist before contacting support
- The exact game or app is documented as supporting mouse and keyboard on Xbox.
- The keyboard and mouse were tested directly in Xbox USB ports, without a hub or dock.
- Another Xbox USB port was tried.
- Rechargeable devices were charged or batteries replaced.
- Cables, plugs, receivers, sensors, and keys were inspected for damage or blockage.
- Each peripheral was tested separately on another compatible device.
- A wireless receiver, when used, was the one supplied with the device and was connected directly.
- The game’s own input or accessibility setting was checked after the dashboard test.
- You know whether the failure follows the peripheral, the Xbox port, or one particular game.
The practical verdict is simple: establish a direct wired USB connection, prove that the dashboard sees each device, and then verify support in the specific game. If the dashboard works but one title does not, investigate that title. If the peripheral fails on another device, replace or repair it. If a known-working wired device fails in every Xbox port, investigate the console rather than buying more accessories.
