If Windows says it cannot find MSVCP140D.dll, the program is usually a Microsoft Visual C++ Debug build trying to run outside its development environment. The trailing d is significant: it identifies the debug C++ standard library, not the normal release runtime. For an end user, the supported fix is to install the application’s current official Release build or ask its developer for one. Installing the ordinary Visual C++ Redistributable may fix msvcp140.dll errors, but it is not a substitute for msvcp140d.dll.
Developers should install the matching Visual Studio toolset for testing, then rebuild every distributable configuration as Release and deploy the supported release runtime for the target architecture. Do not download a random DLL, rename a release DLL, or copy a debug file from another computer.

MSVCP140D.dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ standard library used by applications compiled with Visual Studio. The final d means the executable was linked to the Debug library, normally through the /MDd compiler option. A Release build uses /MD and requests the corresponding release library, such as msvcp140.dll.
A dialog may read “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP140D.dll was not found.” That wording describes a missing dependency; it does not prove that Windows deleted a file or that the file itself is damaged. Most often, a developer shipped a Debug executable, or a test build was copied to a computer that does not have the matching Visual Studio debug environment.

Debug builds can depend on several matching debug components, not just one DLL. Copying one file therefore may leave the program unable to start or may create a mixture of incompatible runtime files.
Is MSVCP140D.dll safe to download or redistribute?
Microsoft states that Debug versions of an application and Debug versions of the Visual C++ library DLLs are not redistributable. They are intended for development, debugging and testing on another test computer, not for shipping with a consumer application.
That makes a “DLL download” site an unsupported solution. A file with the right name could be altered, built for a different toolset, or missing other debug dependencies. Renaming msvcp140.dll to msvcp140d.dll does not convert a Release library into a Debug library and can cause crashes or incorrect behavior.

The distinction matters even when the dialog looks similar. Microsoft’s runtime documentation maps the dynamic-link import library msvcprtd.lib to msvcp<version>d.dll under /MDd, while msvcprt.lib maps to the release DLL under /MD.

How do I fix MSVCP140D.dll as an end user?
Follow these steps if you are trying to launch a game, utility or other program and you did not build it yourself.
1. Record the complete filename
Write down the name exactly, including capitalization and the final letter before .dll. Confirm that it is msvcp140d.dll, not msvcp140.dll or another runtime file. If the name has no d, skip to the release-runtime branch below.
2. Check the application’s official source for a Release update
Visit the publisher’s official download page or use its official installer or launcher. Look for a newer build, a hotfix, or a package described as Release, production or stable. Reinstalling from the official installer can replace an accidentally distributed test executable, but it cannot turn an unchanged Debug package into a supported Release build.
For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification or repair function if the publisher provides one, then install the newest package offered by that publisher. If the same dialog returns, the package itself may still contain a Debug executable.
3. Contact the application vendor when no Release build exists
Send the vendor the exact filename, the application version, your Windows edition and the complete error text. Microsoft advises users who are trying to fix an application by updating Visual C++ runtime libraries to contact the application vendor for instructions. Ask specifically for a corrected Release build rather than a standalone debug DLL.

4. If the filename has no “d,” install the matching release Redistributable
For an error naming msvcp140.dll, use Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable page and choose an installer architecture that matches the application. The architecture must match the program, not simply the architecture of Windows: a 32-bit application needs the x86 runtime, while a 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime. If the vendor supplies an installer, prefer its documented prerequisite instructions.
This release-runtime step does not repair an msvcp140d.dll request. Installing the release package and then renaming files is not an acceptable substitute.
5. Restart and test the official build
After installing the vendor’s update or the correct release runtime, restart Windows if the installer requests it and launch the program from its normal shortcut or launcher. If the dialog still names msvcp140d.dll, preserve the screenshot and report it to the vendor; the application is still requesting a non-redistributable Debug dependency.

If you maintain the application, the fix is in the build and deployment configuration rather than in the end user’s Windows folder.

Install the Visual Studio version and C++ toolset used to compile the program, including its Debug libraries. Use that environment on a controlled development or test machine to run the Debug executable. Debug components are for this purpose; they are not a production prerequisite that can be copied to customers.

Rebuild all distributable configurations as Release
Check every project and configuration that can enter the installer, launcher or archive. Set the C++ runtime linkage to the release setting, /MD, rather than /MDd for a distributable build. Microsoft identifies /MD with the release C++ library and /MDd with the debug C++ library.
Do not change only the main executable. A DLL loaded later can still be compiled as Debug and request a debug runtime, so inspect all shipped binaries and their project configurations.
Deploy the supported release runtime for the target architecture
After rebuilding, package the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable required by the Release build, following Microsoft’s redistribution terms. Build and test each supported architecture separately. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application require different runtime architecture choices, even when they run on the same 64-bit edition of Windows.
Test the actual shipping package on a clean machine
Install the Release package on a test computer that does not have Visual Studio or your development folders. Launch the program from the same installer, launcher and working directory that customers will use. This catches accidental references to developer-only paths and exposes any remaining Debug-linked module before publication.
Use dependency inspection in your normal development workflow to review every executable and DLL in the package. The objective is to verify that no distributable module imports a debug runtime name ending in d.dll.

What if the program starts but shows a Debug assertion?
Sometimes the runtime loads and the next failure is a Debug assertion about an iterator, container bounds or another diagnostic check. That message is evidence that the program is running a Debug configuration, not proof that the DLL is corrupted.
Microsoft documents _ITERATOR_DEBUG_LEVEL as defaulting to 2 in Debug builds and 0 in Release builds. If an assertion appears, record the assertion text, call site and application version and send those details to the developer. Do not suppress the assertion by replacing runtime files; the developer must correct the build or the underlying code.

How can I prevent the error from returning?
- Keep Debug and Release output folders separate so an installer cannot accidentally collect test binaries.
- Make the release pipeline fail when a shipped module imports a debug runtime name.
- Build installers for each supported target architecture and test each one independently.
- Document the required release Redistributable and its architecture in the installer and support notes.
- When a customer reports this error, request the exact filename and application version before suggesting any runtime download.
