If Windows 10 crashes with mtkwl6ex.sys in the “What failed” line, start by treating it as a likely MediaTek Wi‑Fi driver problem, not proof that the wireless card itself has failed. Record the exact stop code, note any driver or hardware change before the first crash, and then use the computer maker’s support page to install the driver made for your exact model. If normal startup is unreliable, perform the checks in Safe Mode. Updating, rolling back, disabling, or reinstalling the affected device driver can resolve a software conflict, but persistent crashes may require Windows recovery or a hardware diagnostic.

What is mtkwl6ex.sys, and why can it trigger a blue screen?

A blue screen of death (BSOD) is a Windows stop error, also called a bug check or kernel error. Windows halts because continuing could corrupt data or leave the system in an unsafe state. Microsoft lists faulty hardware, device drivers, and other software among the possible causes; the filename displayed on the screen is a clue, not a final diagnosis.

An independent-advisor answer on Microsoft Q&A identifies mtkwl6ex.sys as part of a MediaTek Wi‑Fi device driver. That association is useful when choosing what to inspect, but it is not a Microsoft hardware diagnosis and does not guarantee that every computer showing the filename has the same fault. A damaged memory module, another kernel driver, firmware, or a corrupted Windows installation can produce a similar stop.

Before changing anything, photograph or write down the complete message. Keep both the stop code (for example, a code ending in an exception name) and the full “What failed” filename. Also record whether the crash began after a Windows update, Wi‑Fi driver update, BIOS change, new peripheral, application installation, or physical repair. Those details determine whether the safest first move is a rollback, an update, or a recovery action.

What should I check before changing the driver?

Collecting evidence first prevents a broad, unsupported driver swap from hiding the real cause.

Record the stop code and timing

  • On the blue screen, capture the exact stop-code text and the “What failed” entry.
  • Write down whether the crash occurs during startup, when joining a wireless network, after waking from sleep, during a game, or at apparently random times.
  • Note the first date you saw it and every change made immediately beforehand.

Check whether Windows created logs

After rebooting, open Event Viewer by pressing Win, typing Event Viewer, and selecting the app. Choose Windows Logs > System, then inspect errors and critical events at the crash time. A repeated reference to the same adapter, driver service, or hardware reset is stronger evidence than a single filename on one blue screen.

Make room for updates and dumps

Microsoft Learn recommends checking free disk space because Windows needs room for updates, paging, and memory-dump files. The guidance offers 10–15% free space as a recommendation, while noting that the exact requirement varies. In File Explorer, select This PC and check the system drive. Remove only files you recognize, or use Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files.

How do I start Windows 10 in Safe Mode?

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers, making it useful when the normal desktop crashes before you can inspect the adapter. If Windows starts normally, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. At the recovery screen select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

If you cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup two or three times by holding the power button when the Windows logo appears. Windows should enter the recovery environment; follow the same Troubleshoot path. Networking is not required for inspecting or removing a driver, so plain Safe Mode is preferable when you suspect the wireless driver itself.

How do I inspect, roll back, or reinstall the MediaTek Wi‑Fi driver?

Use Device Manager to identify the adapter and apply the least disruptive change that matches the timing of the crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters. Look for a MediaTek wireless entry or a device with a yellow warning icon. Open Properties and read the Driver tab for the provider, date, and version.
  3. If the BSOD began immediately after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Confirm the reason and restart. A rollback is reversible and keeps the previous package.
  4. If no rollback is available, visit the computer maker’s official support page using the exact model number printed on the chassis or shown in Settings > System > About. Download the Windows 10 wireless driver listed for that model and edition. Do not assume a generic MediaTek package is compatible with every laptop or adapter.
  5. Install the vendor package, restart, and test the activity that previously triggered the crash. If the installer refuses to run in Safe Mode, restart normally when possible or use the vendor’s documented installation method.
  6. If the driver is badly corrupted, right-click the adapter in Device Manager, choose Uninstall device, and select the option to remove the driver package only if Windows presents it and you already have a compatible replacement ready. Restart, then install the model-specific package.

Microsoft’s stop-code guidance also allows disabling a problem device temporarily. In Device Manager, right-click the adapter and select Disable device. This can stop wireless connectivity, but it is a useful diagnostic: if the crashes stop while the adapter is disabled, the adapter or its driver remains a leading suspect. Re-enable it after testing or connect through another supported method.

Should I use Windows Update, BIOS updates, or firmware updates?

Yes, but apply them deliberately and from the correct source. In Windows 10 open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install pending quality and driver updates, restart, and observe whether the same stop returns. Windows Update may offer a different driver from the computer maker’s package; if the crashes started after an automatic update, the vendor’s supported rollback may be safer than accepting another generic replacement.

Microsoft Learn also advises checking BIOS or firmware when a device or recent change appears implicated. Use only the BIOS package for the exact computer model, keep AC power connected, and do not interrupt the update. Firmware updates can correct device compatibility problems, but a failed or incorrect flash can make a computer unbootable, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than using a package for a similar model.

What if the stop code says SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION?

If the screen specifically reports SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, Microsoft defines bug check 0x3B as an exception occurring while Windows performs a system service routine. The presence of mtkwl6ex.sys still does not prove that the Wi‑Fi driver caused the exception; dump analysis may be needed to identify the failing code path.

Microsoft’s general crash analysis attributes 70% of analyzed cases to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to cases too corrupted to analyze. Microsoft does not state a publication year for those figures, and they are not current Windows 10 incidence rates or the probability that your adapter is defective. Use them as broad context only.

How can I test memory, hardware, and system integrity?

When driver changes do not stop the BSOD, test other causes before replacing parts.

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

Press Win, type Windows Memory Diagnostic, open it, and choose Restart now and check for problems. Save work first because Windows reboots immediately. The test runs before Windows loads; results normally appear after the next login in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System, filtered for the MemoryDiagnostics-Results source. A reported error warrants vendor-specific memory testing or professional service rather than repeated driver installs.

Use the computer maker’s diagnostics

Many manufacturers provide preboot tests for memory, storage, networking, and the motherboard. Launch them from the startup diagnostic key documented for your model. A failure code is more actionable than the filename alone; keep it for the manufacturer or repair provider.

Wait for completion and follow any repair message. If Windows reports that it could not repair files, use Microsoft’s documented DISM repair sequence before running SFC again. Do not download replacement system files from unofficial sites.

When is Driver Verifier appropriate?

Driver Verifier is an advanced diagnostic for a persistent, reproducible crash when ordinary updates, rollback, logs, and hardware checks have not identified the cause. Microsoft warns that it can substantially slow the computer and trigger additional crashes, and specifically advises against verifying all drivers at once.

To open it, press Win+R, type verifier, and press Enter. Create standard settings, choose to select driver names from a list, and select only the suspected non-Microsoft driver. Restart and reproduce the problem. If Windows becomes unstable, return to Safe Mode, open verifier, choose Delete existing settings, and restart. Keep a recovery path available before enabling it; this tool is not a routine “fix.”

What should I do if the BSOD continues?

Escalate from reversible checks to recovery only after preserving personal files.

Situation Next action Risk or trade-off
Crash started after a driver change Roll back in Device Manager or install the exact vendor package Usually reversible; wireless service may be interrupted during installation
Windows will not stay running Use Safe Mode, then inspect or disable the adapter Safe Mode has limited drivers and may not provide networking
Logs point to recurring hardware errors Run the maker’s memory, storage, and motherboard diagnostics May require repair or replacement; do not assume the Wi‑Fi card is at fault
No clear cause after checks Use System Restore, uninstall a recent update, or follow Windows recovery options Restore changes system software; back up files and review what applications will be affected
Crashes remain after recovery Contact the computer maker with the stop code, dump details, and diagnostic results Vendor escalation is slower but provides model-specific firmware and hardware support

Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance includes removing newly added hardware, checking Device Manager, installing updates, and using recovery options when simpler steps fail. A reset or reinstall can repair a damaged installation, but neither guarantees a solution if the underlying memory, motherboard, adapter, or firmware is defective. Back up documents before any reset and choose the option that preserves files only when you understand which applications and settings will be removed.

What information should I give support?

Provide the exact computer model, Windows 10 edition and build, wireless adapter name, driver provider/date/version, stop code, full “What failed” text, and the date the crashes began. Include whether Safe Mode is stable, whether disabling Wi‑Fi changes the behavior, Event Viewer entries around the crash, memory-test results, and any minidump files requested by the support technician. This evidence lets the vendor match the problem to a supported driver or known firmware issue instead of guessing from the filename.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete mtkwl6ex.sys to stop the blue screen?

No. It is a kernel driver file, and deleting it manually can leave Windows without a usable wireless driver or create additional errors. Remove or replace the package through Device Manager or the computer maker’s installer, not by deleting a file from the Windows system folders.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

How do I find my exact laptop model if the label is unreadable?

Press Win+R, enter msinfo32, and read the System Model field in System Information. You can also check Settings > System > About; use the complete model and sub-model when searching the manufacturer’s support site.

Will switching to Ethernet prove the wireless card is bad?

It can narrow the diagnosis but cannot prove a hardware failure. If the computer is stable with the wireless adapter disabled and crashes return when it is enabled, the adapter or its driver is implicated; another kernel component can still be involved.

Where are Windows 10 minidump files stored?

When configured to create small memory dumps, Windows normally stores them in C:WindowsMinidump. Copy the files before using recovery tools and share them only with a trusted support technician who can analyze kernel dumps.
