How to Fix Multiplayer Connection Problems During a Halloween Game Night

When a Halloween game night falls apart, first identify whether nobody can connect or only one guest is being rejected. That single distinction narrows the likely cause from your household network to one player’s connection or NAT environment. Run the console or PC connection test, record the NAT type and upload/download results, then use reversible checks—restarting the game and network equipment, and trying Ethernet—before changing router settings.

Strict or incompatible NAT can block peer matchmaking even when everyone can browse the web. A wired test can reveal Wi-Fi interference, but an Ethernet cable will not by itself repair a restrictive NAT or an ISP-level problem. Port-forwarding rules are specific to the game and platform, so copying a list from another title can make the network less secure without solving the failure.

Start by scoping the failure

Ask every guest to try joining the same session and note exactly who fails. There are two materially different patterns:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Only one player cannot join: Nintendo says a problem that occurs with a specific player may be caused by that player’s network. Have that person run the connection test and try the wired check first.
  • Nobody can join anyone: A failure with every player points more strongly to the local network, router, internet-service path or an online service problem.

Do not change several variables at once. A successful restart or cable test is useful evidence; a sequence of simultaneous router edits is not. Keep a short record of each player’s NAT result, download and upload readings, and whether the test was performed over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Run the built-in connection test before changing settings

Use the network-testing option supplied by the console, game launcher or operating system. The exact menu wording differs by platform, but the test should report a NAT type and connection speeds. Record the result exactly as shown, including whether the device is on wireless or wired networking.

What to record

  • NAT type or equivalent classification.
  • Download speed and upload speed reported by the platform.
  • Whether the test succeeds while the multiplayer lobby still fails.
  • Whether another player can join the same host.

A test that can browse the internet does not prove that peer-to-peer matchmaking will work. NAT controls how private device addresses are represented behind one public ISP address, and the resulting restrictions can affect inbound game connections.

Use a controlled restart sequence

Restarting is low-risk and reversible, but it works best when you retest after each stage instead of rebooting everything and guessing which action helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close and relaunch the game. Recreate the lobby and test one invite.
  2. Restart the console or PC. After it reconnects, run the platform connection test again.
  3. Restart the modem or gateway. Wait until its internet status is restored, then repeat the test.
  4. Restart the separate router, if your household uses one. Run the test again before changing any configuration.

Nintendo and other platform guidance recommends this sequence of restarting the game, device and network equipment, followed by a retest. If only one guest remains unable to join after the host’s equipment has been restarted, focus troubleshooting on that guest’s network rather than repeatedly rebooting the whole household.

Understand NAT before trying router changes

NAT (network address translation) lets multiple private devices share one public address from the ISP. For multiplayer, the important question is whether the game can establish the connections it needs to other players. Nintendo explains that stricter NAT types can prevent online activities such as connecting with other players. Activision describes Moderate or Type 2 and Strict or Type 3 NAT as conditions that can limit peer connections.

Why two players can have different results

Each player may pass a general internet test while their NAT environments are incompatible for a particular peer connection. One player might host successfully for most guests but fail with a person whose network is more restrictive. That pattern is not proof that either console is defective; it is evidence that the two network paths cannot negotiate the required connection.

Use NAT results as evidence, not a diagnosis by themselves

A restrictive result gives you a direction to investigate, not a universal fix. First confirm the scope of the failure and test a different host. If every guest fails to connect to one household, inspect that household’s router arrangement and ISP path. If one guest fails only when joining a specific host, compare both NAT results and test the guest on a different network when possible.

Try Ethernet as a temporary diagnostic

Connect the affected device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then rerun the connection test and attempt the same lobby. This separates common Wi-Fi problems—interference, weak signal or local congestion—from internet and NAT issues.

  • Wired succeeds, Wi-Fi fails: concentrate on wireless placement, interference and congestion for the event. Keep the cable connected for game night if practical.
  • Wired and Wi-Fi both fail: the cause is more likely NAT, router configuration, ISP policy or the game service rather than radio interference.
  • Wired changes nothing for one guest: that player’s network may still be using restrictive NAT or a managed connection.

Nintendo Switch dock requirement

Nintendo’s matchmaking instructions state: “You must use a USB LAN adapter to establish a wired internet connection if you are using a dock without a built-in LAN port.” For that setup, use a compatible USB LAN adapter and Ethernet cable; plugging a cable into a dock that has no LAN socket cannot create a wired link.

Do not misapply Remote Play speed figures

PlayStation lists a 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download minimum for Remote Play, with 15 Mbps or more in each direction recommended for best performance. Those figures describe Remote Play, not a universal bandwidth requirement for every multiplayer game. Treat your platform’s measured result as evidence about your connection, not as a promise that any game will work above a particular number.

Inspect the router only after the reversible tests

Check for two layers of NAT

If the modem supplied by the ISP also routes traffic and a second router is connected behind it, both devices may be performing NAT. This arrangement can make matchmaking more restrictive. Identify which device is acting as the gateway and whether the second router is in router mode. If you cannot change the ISP gateway safely, ask the provider about bridge or access-point options rather than making random edits during the party.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update router firmware

Check the manufacturer’s administration page for a firmware update and read its release notes. Apply updates when the event is over if the household depends on the connection, because a firmware restart interrupts everyone. Firmware updates can address compatibility and stability problems, but they do not guarantee that an ISP-level NAT restriction will disappear.

Understand UPnP’s role

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows a game or console to request the temporary mappings it needs. If UPnP is disabled or malfunctioning, a title may report a restrictive NAT even though the internet connection itself is fast. If you enable it, do so on the router that actually faces the ISP, then rerun the platform test. If your network is managed by a school, hotel, carrier or another administrator, you may not have permission to change this setting.

Port forwarding is title- and platform-specific

Port forwarding creates a persistent rule that sends selected traffic to one device. Activision’s networking guidance explains the concept and directs players to platform-specific instructions. Do not copy a port list from another game: requirements differ by title and platform, and a rule for one device can interfere with another device or expose services unnecessarily.

PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 for Remote Play. That port is a Remote Play detail, not a general multiplayer rule. Use only the ports documented for your exact game and platform, and remove temporary rules that are no longer needed.

Follow the right branch for your symptom

Everyone fails to join the host

  1. Have the host run the platform connection test and record NAT and speeds.
  2. Restart the game, host device, modem and router in the sequence above, testing after each step.
  3. Connect the host by Ethernet and test again.
  4. Check whether two routers are performing NAT and whether router firmware is current.
  5. Review the game’s official networking instructions for the correct UPnP or port requirements.
  6. If the host is behind carrier-grade NAT or a managed ISP network, contact the provider.

Only one guest cannot join

  1. Have that guest run the same connection test and share the NAT classification.
  2. Ask the guest to restart the game and device, then retest.
  3. Try Ethernet, or test from a different permitted network to separate home Wi-Fi from the ISP path.
  4. Compare results when joining a different host. If the guest fails everywhere, their network is the leading suspect; if they fail only with one host, the NAT combination may be incompatible.

The lobby works, but play is laggy

Joining proves that matchmaking completed; it does not prove that the wireless link is stable. Keep the wired cable connected for a controlled comparison. Record whether lag improves, stays the same or affects every device in the home. If Ethernet improves the session, use the cable for the event and investigate Wi-Fi placement and congestion later. If it does not, preserve the measured NAT and speed results for the ISP or game support team instead of repeatedly changing channels or ports.

The connection test passes, but invites time out

Repeat the test with both players and try a different host. A passing general test can coexist with incompatible NAT environments. Check the game’s service status through its official support channel, then confirm that both players are running the same game version and have the required online service access for their platform. Avoid assuming that a successful web-browsing test clears the router for peer matchmaking.

Choose fixes by speed, reversibility and coverage

Action Deployment speed Reversibility Coverage Evidence produced
Relaunch the game or device Fast Fully reversible One device Whether a fresh session clears the failure
Restart modem and router Fast Fully reversible Household network Whether a new network session changes NAT or joining
Temporary Ethernet connection Fast if cable and port are available Fully reversible One device Whether Wi-Fi interference is involved
Enable or repair UPnP Slower than a restart Reversible router setting Potentially multiple devices Whether NAT classification changes after retest
Port forwarding Slowest of these checks Persistent until removed Usually one device and title Whether the documented game requirement is met
ISP investigation Depends on provider Handled by provider Household or account Whether carrier-grade NAT or managed restrictions are present

For a last-minute event, start at the top of the table. A measured, temporary test is more informative than a permanent router rule based on a guess.

When the ISP or venue controls the network

Hotels, schools, dormitories, workplaces and some mobile or fixed-wireless services may block inbound connections or place customers behind carrier-grade NAT. You may be unable to enable UPnP, forward ports or alter the gateway. Repeatedly changing settings on your console cannot remove a restriction enforced upstream.

Contact the network provider with the recorded NAT type, test speeds, device platform and the exact multiplayer symptom. Ask whether the connection uses carrier-grade NAT, whether inbound peer traffic is blocked, and whether an approved public-address option exists. Do not disclose account credentials or disable security controls simply to make one lobby connect.

Prepare the network before the next game night

  • Run a connection test on each regular participant’s device before guests arrive.
  • Record which players can host and which NAT types they receive.
  • Label a known-good Ethernet cable and, for a Switch dock without a built-in LAN port, keep a compatible USB LAN adapter available.
  • Update the router and game while there is time to recover from a restart.
  • Save the official networking page for the exact game and platform; do not rely on a port list copied from another title.
  • Arrange a backup host. If one household’s NAT prevents joining, moving the lobby to another tested host can keep the evening going.

Common mistakes that waste game-night time

  • Rebooting without recording results: You lose the evidence needed to distinguish a Wi-Fi issue from NAT or ISP restrictions.
  • Assuming bandwidth is the only requirement: Multiplayer connection setup depends on NAT and reachable peer paths, not just download speed.
  • Forwarding ports from a different game: Port numbers vary by title and platform.
  • Changing several router settings simultaneously: You cannot tell which change helped, and an unnecessary rule may affect other devices.
  • Blaming the host immediately: A single-player failure often originates on that player’s network.
  • Treating an Ethernet cable as a universal cure: It can isolate Wi-Fi interference but cannot override carrier-grade NAT or a restrictive router policy.

A practical event-night checklist

  1. Ask whether the failure affects everyone or one guest.
  2. Run and record the platform connection test, including NAT and upload/download results.
  3. Relaunch the game and retest.
  4. Restart the console or PC and retest.
  5. Restart the modem and router, testing after each device comes back online.
  6. Try Ethernet; use a USB LAN adapter for a Switch dock that lacks a built-in LAN port.
  7. If NAT remains restrictive, check for two routers, firmware updates and the correct UPnP guidance.
  8. Use port forwarding only when the game’s official instructions specify the ports for your platform.
  9. If the network is managed or carrier-grade NAT is suspected, contact the provider.

This order keeps the quickest, safest and most informative actions ahead of persistent configuration changes. It also leaves you with concrete test results to share with platform or ISP support if the problem survives the event.
