If GTA Online cannot join friends, matchmaking repeatedly fails, or your console reports a Strict NAT, work through the connection path in order: check Rockstar’s service status, restart the game, device and router, test NAT, try Ethernet, then adjust UPnP, ports, DNS or firewall rules one change at a time. A more open NAT reduces conflicts with other players, but no single setting fixes every home network.
What NAT type means in GTA Online
Network Address Translation (NAT) controls how your router allows game traffic between your device and other players. Rockstar describes three practical states for PC troubleshooting:

Rockstar’s wording is clear: “A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts with other player systems and encounter less connectivity issues with other players.” NAT is only one part of the path. A service outage, unstable Wi-Fi, blocked firewall traffic, incorrect ports, double NAT or an ISP restriction can produce the same symptoms.
Use this order before changing router settings
The sequence below starts with reversible checks and escalates only when the evidence points to your local network. Test GTA Online after each stage so you know which change helped.

1. Check Rockstar service status
Open Rockstar’s official service-status page and look for an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting GTA Online, authentication or platform services. If the service is degraded, local port changes cannot restore matchmaking; wait for the incident to clear and retry. Record the time and the affected service if you later contact support.
2. Restart the complete connection path
- Quit GTA Online completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Restart the PlayStation, Xbox or PC.
- Power off the router. Unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and wait until its internet and Wi-Fi indicators stabilize.
- Start the device, launch GTA Online and test both a public session and an invitation from a friend.
Rockstar’s platform guides specifically recommend resetting the router. This clears stale address mappings and can recover a temporary matchmaking failure without changing configuration.
3. Test internet connectivity and NAT
Run the built-in network test on your platform and note the reported NAT result, download and upload rates, packet-loss or latency warnings, and whether the device reports a failed multiplayer service. A NAT result that changes after a restart suggests a transient router mapping; a consistently Strict result points to a persistent restriction.

Eliminate Wi-Fi as the cause
Try a wired Ethernet connection
Rockstar recommends Ethernet when wireless play is problematic. Connect the console or PC directly to the router with a suitable cable, such as Cat6, then repeat the platform network test and GTA Online matchmaking test. Wired networking can reduce interference, signal loss and latency spikes. It does not convert Strict NAT to Open NAT by itself; if the NAT classification remains Strict over Ethernet, continue with the router and ISP checks.
Interpret the result
- Ethernet works and Wi-Fi fails: investigate wireless congestion, distance, channel selection or access-point placement. Keep the wired connection for gaming if practical.
- Both connections fail with the same NAT: focus on router mode, UPnP, port handling or the ISP path.
- Only one device fails: check that device’s firewall, network profile and local security software before changing network-wide settings.
Enable UPnP before attempting manual forwarding
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) lets a game request temporary inbound mappings from a compatible router. Rockstar’s PC guidance recommends enabling UPnP, and its console troubleshooting material also directs players to check it. Router labels differ, but the option is commonly under Network, Advanced, NAT or Port Forwarding settings.
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface using the address and credentials supplied by the router maker or internet provider.
- Locate the UPnP setting and enable it.
- Save the change, reboot the router, then restart the gaming device.
- Run the platform NAT test and try GTA Online matchmaking.
UPnP is low effort and reversible, but it depends on router firmware and network design. If the router is behind another router, or if the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, UPnP may report success while the public-facing NAT remains restrictive. If UPnP does not change the result, disable it again if you do not need it and move to the next controlled test.

Check for double NAT and carrier-grade NAT
Double NAT occurs when two devices perform routing, such as an ISP gateway connected to a separate Wi-Fi router. Each layer can block unsolicited game traffic. Identify every device between the console or PC and the internet. If both the gateway and your router advertise routing, ask the ISP whether the gateway can be placed in bridge or passthrough mode, or configure only one device as the router. The exact menu and terminology vary by provider.
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) places multiple customers behind one public IPv4 address. In that arrangement, forwarding ports on your home router cannot create a fully reachable inbound path. If UPnP, Ethernet and correct local settings do not improve a persistent Strict NAT, ask the ISP whether your connection uses CGNAT and whether a public IPv4 option is available. Provider policies and fees differ, so treat this as an ISP question rather than a GTA setting.
Use the GTA Online ports carefully
Rockstar lists these GTA Online UDP ports in its PlayStation and Xbox troubleshooting pages:

Platform network services require additional ports, and those values differ between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Do not rely on an old forum list. Use the current Rockstar troubleshooting page for your exact platform and edition, and enter every required value precisely.
When manual forwarding is appropriate
Manual forwarding is a second-line measure after restart, Ethernet and UPnP. It requires a stable local address for the gaming device and exact protocol and port values. A typical router rule asks for the device’s local IP address, the same start and end port when forwarding a single port, and UDP as the protocol. Router interfaces differ, so follow the labels shown by your model rather than guessing.

- Create only the Rockstar and platform rules required for your device.
- Save, reboot the router and device, then run the NAT test.
- If matchmaking is unchanged, remove the added rules before trying another approach.
Forwarding can affect other devices and can expose a service to unsolicited traffic. Never forward broad port ranges when Rockstar specifies individual ports, and never place a gaming device in a router’s unrestricted DMZ as a first step.

Review firewall and security settings
On PC, verify that the Rockstar Games launcher and GTA V are allowed through the operating system firewall on the networks you actually use. Rockstar’s guidance also calls for checking router firewall and NAT restrictions. Create narrow application or port exceptions rather than disabling the firewall globally.
- After adding an exception, restart the launcher and game before retesting.
- If a security suite has its own firewall, check that layer as well; two firewalls can apply different rules.
- Do not install a “PC cleaner” or driver utility as a NAT remedy. Such software does not open router mappings or repair an ISP-side restriction.
- On consoles, review router-level filtering and parental-control features, which can block multiplayer traffic even when the console software is current.
Change DNS only as a controlled test
Rockstar’s console guides include DNS troubleshooting. DNS resolves service names; changing it can help when your provider’s resolver is failing or returning stale results, but it does not generally change the NAT type created by your router or ISP.
- Write down the current DNS addresses so you can restore them.
- Change DNS in the console’s network configuration, leaving IP address and gateway settings on automatic unless your network administrator requires otherwise.
- Save, reconnect, and test Rockstar services and GTA Online.
- If there is no improvement, restore the original DNS values and continue investigating NAT or firewall restrictions.
Apply one DNS or firewall change at a time. Multiple simultaneous changes make it impossible to identify the cause and can leave a device with inconsistent settings.
Check your connection speed, without treating it as a guarantee
Rockstar’s 2024/2025 PlayStation and Xbox troubleshooting guidance lists 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. These are troubleshooting targets, not a promise that matchmaking will work whenever a speed test reaches them. Stability, packet loss, latency, NAT and service availability still matter.

Try another internet connection to isolate the fault
Rockstar’s service-unavailable guidance recommends testing another connection, such as a mobile hotspot. Connect the same console or PC to the alternate network and attempt the identical GTA Online action.
- Works on the hotspot: the game account and device are less likely to be the problem; investigate the home router, double NAT, ISP filtering or CGNAT.
- Fails on both networks: check Rockstar service status, platform services, game updates, local firewall settings and account-specific errors.
- Hotspot is unstable or expensive: use it only as a short diagnostic test. Mobile networks can have their own NAT restrictions and data limits.
Platform-focused troubleshooting
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Start with the service-status check, a full restart and the console’s internet and NAT test. Repeat over Ethernet if possible. Confirm UPnP on the router, then compare the result after enabling it. If the NAT remains restrictive, consult Rockstar’s current PlayStation guidance for the platform’s required network ports and DNS procedure; the GTA Online UDP ports listed above are only part of the complete platform configuration.

If invitations fail only with one friend, have both players run their NAT tests. A Strict player may connect only to an Open player, so the two results together explain why a session works for some friends but not others.

Run the Xbox network and multiplayer tests after restarting the console and router. Check the router’s UPnP status and retry over Ethernet. Use Rockstar’s current Xbox troubleshooting page for platform-service ports in addition to the GTA Online UDP ports. If the console reports a persistent Strict or unavailable NAT, investigate double NAT and CGNAT with the ISP before adding more forwarding rules.
PC
Confirm that the launcher and GTA V are updated and permitted through the operating-system and router firewalls. Rockstar’s PC guidance uses Open, Moderate and Strict NAT definitions and recommends UPnP. Test with Ethernet, then with a mobile hotspot if necessary. If the alternate connection works, focus on the home router or ISP; if neither works, check service status and platform authentication before rebuilding local rules.

When to stop changing settings
Stop after a change produces a stable Open or Moderate NAT and reliable sessions. More forwarding is not automatically better. Keep a record of every setting you changed, remove unsuccessful rules, and return DNS or firewall values to their previous state when a test is complete.
Contact Rockstar Support with the platform, NAT result, exact error text, time of failure, service-status result and whether Ethernet or a hotspot changed the outcome. Contact the ISP when the issue follows the home connection across multiple devices, when the gateway is behind another router, or when the provider confirms CGNAT or filtering. This information lets support distinguish a game-service incident from a local routing problem.

Does buying a faster internet plan guarantee Open NAT?
No. The quoted 7.5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps recommended upload figures are Rockstar troubleshooting targets. NAT is determined by routing and address translation, while matchmaking also depends on latency, packet loss, firewall behavior and service availability.

Can a Cat6 cable change Strict NAT to Open?
No. Ethernet can make the connection more stable and is a useful diagnostic, but NAT remains controlled by the router and ISP path.
Should I forward every port listed on a forum?
No. Use the current Rockstar instructions for your exact platform, include the specified platform-service ports, and avoid obsolete or unrelated lists. Forward only the required UDP ports and remove rules that do not help.
Why does UPnP appear enabled while NAT is still Strict?
The router may be behind another router, the device may be on the wrong network segment, or the ISP may use CGNAT. In those cases, local UPnP cannot create an inbound mapping on the public internet. Check for double NAT and ask the ISP about CGNAT.

It is primarily an isolation test. A hotspot may have its own restrictive NAT, variable latency and data limits, so use it to determine whether the home connection is responsible rather than assuming it is a better long-term gaming path.
