The sequence below separates official EA troubleshooting from lower-confidence community suggestions, so you can tell which steps are established support guidance and which are diagnostic experiments.

1. Establish what is failing before changing anything
Identify the exact symptom
Write down whether the game fails before the main menu, crashes when a keyboard key or controller button is pressed, freezes during a race, or merely feels uneven. Also note whether the problem began after a driver, Windows, launcher, or peripheral change. This distinction determines which branch to test first and gives EA support useful information if you need to escalate.
There is no independent published statistic establishing how often Hot Pursuit Remastered crashes, stutters, or rejects controllers. Forum posts demonstrate that people have encountered these symptoms, but they cannot be used as a prevalence rate.

Compare your system with EA’s published requirements
EA lists the following Windows requirements for the PC version on its product page (the game page identifies the release date as November 6, 2020): EA’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered product page.

These are EA’s published specifications, not an independent performance benchmark. Meeting them does not guarantee a particular frame rate or rule out a software conflict. If your computer is below the minimum, record that fact before considering an upgrade; if it meets the requirements, continue with software and configuration checks rather than assuming new hardware is necessary.
Create a DxDiag baseline
EA recommends DxDiag when a PC game crashes, runs slowly, or has graphical problems. EA’s guide says to first confirm that the computer meets the game’s minimum requirements and that the graphics driver is fully updated: EA’s DxDiag guide.
- Open Windows Search and type
dxdiag. - Launch the DxDiag application. If a 64-bit report option is offered, use it.
- Choose Save All Information and save the text report somewhere easy to find.
- Check the processor, installed memory, graphics adapter, driver version and date, and DirectX information.
- On a laptop, verify which adapter the game is using. A system can contain both integrated and dedicated graphics; being installed does not mean the game selected the faster adapter.
Keep the report and your symptom notes together. They provide a reproducible starting point and can be attached when contacting EA.
2. Apply the low-risk crash fixes first
Close background programs, then use a clean boot if necessary
EA’s general crash guidance starts by closing background applications. Exit browsers with many tabs, recording tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, RGB controllers, chat overlays, and other software that injects an overlay or hooks into games. Test the game after the exits rather than changing several settings at once.

If the crash remains, perform a Windows clean boot so nonessential startup services and programs are temporarily disabled. A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent recommendation: restore normal startup afterward and re-enable items in groups to find a conflict. Follow EA’s current instructions in the crash and freezing guide.
Repair the installation in the EA app
For an EA app installation, open Library, find the game, select Manage, and choose Repair. This replaces damaged or missing files without immediately removing the complete installation. Let the process finish, restart the launcher if requested, and test the same action that previously caused the crash.

EA’s EA app menu path does not directly apply to a Steam installation. Use Steam’s installed-file verification function for the game, then launch it again. If verification reports files that repeatedly fail to replace, note the result for support rather than repeatedly deleting random files.
Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and obtain the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. EA specifically calls out a fully updated graphics driver in its DxDiag advice. A newly released driver can also introduce a conflict, so if the problem began immediately after an update, record the driver version and test the manufacturer’s supported rollback option rather than installing an unofficial driver package.
Reinstall only after repair and verification
EA lists reinstalling the game and the EA app among general crash steps. Treat this as a later measure because it takes longer, consumes bandwidth, and does not address a bad driver, conflicting overlay, or incompatible input device. Preserve your DxDiag report and symptom notes before uninstalling so you can compare the result.

3. Reduce stutter and graphical instability
Lower the settings as a diagnostic test
If the computer is close to the minimum specification, lower resolution, texture quality, shadows, effects, and other expensive options. Close unnecessary programs while testing. The aim is to determine whether the unevenness is workload-related; do not interpret a smoother low-setting test as proof that the game is otherwise defective.
Make sure a laptop uses the dedicated GPU
Use Windows or the graphics driver control panel to assign Hot Pursuit Remastered to the dedicated GPU. Compare the adapter shown in DxDiag with the adapter selected for the game. Running on integrated graphics can produce low frame rates or stutter even when a laptop also contains a discrete GPU.
Test a frame cap and V-Sync
EA’s crash guidance recommends trying a frame-rate cap and enabling Vertical Sync (V-Sync) to match the frame rate to the display refresh rate: EA’s crash and freezing guidance. Change one option, restart or reload as appropriate, and check the same route or race. A cap can reduce frame-time spikes; V-Sync can remove tearing but may add latency or introduce a lower synchronized rate, so keep whichever setting produces the steadier result on your display.
Test the DirectX option if the game exposes one
EA’s PC graphics article suggests disabling the latest DirectX version in a game’s video settings and restarting when microstutter occurs, if that option is available. The same guidance notes that driver conflicts or a new driver can contribute: EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guide. This is a diagnostic test drawn from general EA advice, not a confirmed Hot Pursuit Remastered-specific fix. If the setting is absent, do not attempt to force a different renderer through undocumented launch parameters.
Return manual overclocks to factory values
If you have overclocked the CPU or GPU, restore factory clocks and test again. EA recommends this as a stability check. Keep the change temporary so you can determine whether the overclock, rather than the game, caused the crash or stutter.

4. Check Windows and DirectX components when the symptoms point there
EA’s DirectX and EA app guidance advises checking that Windows is up to date and describes installing Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime when libraries used by the EA app are missing: EA’s DirectX and EA app troubleshooting guide. Keep the scope narrow. This guidance does not mean every Hot Pursuit Remastered crash requires a DirectX runtime reinstall.
Use the runtime guidance when error messages mention missing DirectX components, the EA app itself reports a DirectX problem, or DxDiag exposes an unusual component issue. Download system components only from Microsoft or the official launcher instructions, restart Windows, and retest. Do not replace working files with random DLL downloads.

Start with one input device
Disconnect extra gamepads, wheels, flight sticks, virtual-controller tools, and USB adapters. Leave one controller connected directly to the PC, restart the launcher, and test detection. Then reconnect devices one at a time. This isolates duplicate mappings and conflicting input layers without asking you to disable unidentified Windows devices.
Check the controller or wheel driver
Install the current driver or firmware supplied by the controller or wheel manufacturer. An EA forum report about a Logitech G29 describes a crash after pressing a key or button; an EA staff reply suggested checking wheel-driver updates and whether security software interferes. That thread is a user report, not an official compatibility list or a confirmed global solution: G29 crash discussion.
Investigate multiple HID controllers carefully
Another community reply suggested checking for multiple enabled HID game controllers. Treat this as an isolation idea, not permission to disable arbitrary HID entries. In Device Manager, identify each game controller by its name and connection, disconnect hardware you recognize as unused, and leave keyboard, mouse, accessibility, and other essential devices alone. Interpret an unrecognized-controller report cautiously
EA community users have described a controller appearing as “unrecognized” or failing to map buttons. That language describes individual reports, not evidence that every Xbox-style pad is incompatible. The related thread is the controller-recognition discussion. Confirm that Windows sees the device, test a different USB port or a direct connection, remove other input devices, and then retry the game before buying anything.
Check overlays, permissions, cache, and key binding only after the basic tests
A separate key-binding crash discussion contains community suggestions to clear the EA app cache, repair files, check whether security software or write permissions interfere, and disable overlays. One user reported that Windows 8 compatibility mode and disabling fullscreen optimizations helped that particular case: key-binding crash discussion.
These are lower-confidence, case-specific experiments. Try them only after file repair, driver checks, and single-device testing. Clear the launcher cache through the EA app’s supported recovery option, not by deleting unrelated folders. If security software is suspected, use its documented game-exclusion or temporary-test procedure and restore protection immediately. Change fullscreen optimization or compatibility settings per executable, record the original values, and undo them if they do not help.

If you need a replacement controller
A standard PC-compatible Xbox-style gamepad is a reasonable replacement category when the existing device is physically faulty or no longer supported by its manufacturer. The available evidence does not show that buying a new controller cures Hot Pursuit Remastered crashes or guarantees compatibility, so complete the isolation and driver checks first.
6. Choose the right branch for your symptom

7. Escalate with evidence instead of guessing
Contact EA support when the game still crashes after the appropriate branch, when repair or file verification repeatedly fails, or when the launcher reports a component error. Include the DxDiag report, Windows version, GPU and driver version/date, storefront, whether the game is assigned to a dedicated GPU, the exact point of failure, and which tests changed the behavior.
Use precise language such as “crashes to desktop when I press a key on the keyboard,” “controller appears as unrecognized,” or “game starts but crashes when I press a controller button.” State whether one controller was connected, whether overlays were disabled, and whether the issue occurs in menus, during a race, or only while changing bindings. This prevents support from treating a launch crash, a graphics hitch, and an input conflict as the same problem.
EA’s launcher menus, Windows labels, and driver packages can change. Recheck the live EA support pages and the relevant GPU or peripheral manufacturer instructions when you perform these steps, especially if a label differs from the paths described here.
