Most stuck Nintendo eShop downloads resume after you close the running game, reconnect the Switch, and choose HOME Menu user page → User Settings → Update Download Progress. If the bar still does not move, restart the console; then check the connection, available space, and purchasing account before escalating an error code.
Start with the least destructive fix
Do not delete the download immediately. A stalled-looking eShop transfer is often paused by software that is currently running, a brief connection problem, or a lack of room on the console or card. Work through these checks in order so you do not lose a partially downloaded title unnecessarily.

- Confirm the Switch is online. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection. If the console cannot connect, fix that connection before trying the download again.
- Close every game or application. Return to the HOME Menu, highlight the software, press the X button, and choose Close. Nintendo notes that some games and software pause downloads while they are being played, particularly when online features are involved.
- Refresh the download. Open the HOME Menu user page, choose User Settings, and select Update Download Progress. Shortly after reconnecting online, the download should begin progressing if no software is running that can pause it.
- Restart the console if progress remains unchanged. A restart forces the Switch to reconnect and rebuild its download session. After it starts again, leave the game closed and check the download status from the HOME Menu.
These actions are reversible: they close software and refresh the connection without removing the game or its save data. They are the right first response to a download that says “paused,” appears frozen, or has stopped moving without an error code.
Use the symptom to choose the next remedy
| What you see | Likely cause to check | Next action | How reversible it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Paused” or no movement while a game is open | Running software is intentionally suspending the transfer | Close the game, then use Update Download Progress | Immediate and fully reversible |
| Very slow progress after the game is closed | Weak or unstable internet connection | Run the connection test and improve wireless reliability | Reversible; no download removal required |
| Download will not start, or an insufficient-space message appears | Not enough room in system memory or on the inserted card | Free space or use a compatible microSD/microSD Express card | Storage changes may require moving or deleting software |
| Title is missing after deletion or a move to another console | Wrong Nintendo Account or virtual game card not set | Use the purchasing account and set the title’s virtual game card from HOME | Redownload is reversible; the purchase remains tied to the account |
| A specific error code appears repeatedly | A code-specific account, network, storage, or service issue | Follow Nintendo’s official support instructions for that code | Depends on the code; avoid repeated guesses |
Why a game can pause an eShop download
Closing a game is not just a generic troubleshooting ritual. Nintendo explicitly says that “Some games and software will pause downloads when they are being played.” This is especially relevant when the game uses online features: the console may prioritize the active software’s network activity instead of continuing a background transfer.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
If you start a game soon after initiating an eShop download, the progress indicator can therefore look stuck even though the console is behaving as designed. Exit to HOME, close the software rather than merely suspending it, and refresh the transfer with User Settings → Update Download Progress. Keep the software closed until the download has finished.
Another useful distinction is between a paused transfer and a slow transfer. A paused transfer often resumes promptly after software is closed and progress is updated. A transfer that advances in small increments is more likely limited by the internet connection, wireless range, or congestion. Treat those as separate cases instead of repeatedly restarting the same download.
Check the internet connection when progress is slow
A slow download is still a download. If the percentage or remaining-size figure changes occasionally, focus on connection quality before changing storage or deleting the title.

- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Choose Internet.
- Select Test Connection and wait for the result.
- If the test reports a problem, reconnect to the correct wireless network and test again before resuming the eShop transfer.
The test confirms whether the console can reach the internet; it does not guarantee a particular download speed. Nintendo does not publish a universal eShop download time or success rate for this situation, so an exact completion estimate cannot be inferred from the test alone.
Improve the conditions for a wireless transfer
- Keep the console within reliable wireless range of the router, especially when downloading in sleep mode.
- Leave demanding software closed while the transfer runs.
- After correcting the connection, return to the user page and choose Update Download Progress rather than assuming the queue will immediately recover.
- If the console was offline when it entered sleep mode, reconnect it before expecting the download to continue.
If the connection test succeeds but the transfer repeatedly stops with a named error code, stop applying generic network fixes and use Nintendo’s official error-code support path. The code is the most useful diagnostic detail for that branch.

Can Nintendo Switch download games in sleep mode?
Yes, a Switch can continue an eShop download in sleep mode when the console has an internet connection and enough free space in either system memory or the inserted microSD or microSD Express card. Sleep mode is not an offline download queue: if the network connection is unavailable, the transfer cannot continue.
Prepare the console before putting it to sleep
- Start or resume the eShop download while the console is online.
- Close any game or software that could pause background transfers.
- Confirm that the destination storage has sufficient free space.
- Leave the console where its wireless connection is reliable.
- Enter sleep mode and check the download later from the HOME Menu.
If the download has not advanced after waking the console, reconnect to the internet and use Update Download Progress. A sleep-mode stall is usually explained by one of three conditions: the console lost its connection, the available storage filled up, or software was left running in a way that pauses the transfer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check storage in both possible destinations
The Switch can use its internal system memory and an inserted microSD-family card for downloaded software. Check both locations; looking at only one can miss the actual limitation. Nintendo states that sleep-mode downloads require sufficient space on either storage location, so a full destination can prevent a transfer even when the other location has room.
What to inspect
- Open System Settings → Data Management and review the free space shown for system memory.
- Review the inserted microSD card’s available capacity in the same area.
- Make sure the card is properly inserted and recognized by the console.
- If the console needs more room, archive or delete software you no longer need, or install a compatible microSD card.
Archiving software removes its local program data while preserving the software’s icon and save data for a later redownload; deleting a title is a more substantial change, so use it only when you understand what will be removed. The exact amount of space required depends on the title and any updates; no general gigabyte figure applies to every eShop game.
Choosing a card for a space-related stall
A compatible microSD card is the direct hardware remedy when the internal memory or current card cannot hold the download. Newer Switch models may support microSD Express, while earlier hardware uses standard microSD-family storage. Confirm the card standard supported by your exact console before buying or moving data. A card does not fix a failed internet connection, an account mismatch, or a software-paused transfer.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Redownload a purchase that was deleted or moved
If a game disappeared after you deleted it or moved to another console, the purchase is normally recovered through the Nintendo Account that bought it. The purchasing account must be linked to the user attempting the redownload.

Use the purchasing account
- On the HOME Menu, select the user profile linked to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase.
- Open the Virtual Game Cards area from the HOME Menu.
- Locate the purchased title and set its virtual game card for the console, following the prompts shown on screen.
- Return to the HOME Menu and start the redownload.
If the title is absent, first verify the user profile and Nintendo Account rather than repeatedly restarting the console. A different account may be able to use the console but will not necessarily own the purchase. Account linking is therefore a separate check from internet troubleshooting.
Moving a title between consoles does not change which account owns it. The console that receives the title still needs the purchasing account’s virtual game card arrangement before the redownload can proceed.
When a download fails with an error code
An error-code failure is different from an ordinary pause. Record the complete code and the wording on screen, then consult Nintendo’s official support instructions for that exact code. Nintendo’s guidance can vary according to whether the code points to connectivity, storage, account authorization, a damaged transfer, or a service condition.
Information to keep before contacting support
- The complete error code, including every letter, number, and punctuation mark.
- Whether the failure occurs on one title or every eShop download.
- Whether the console passes Internet → Test Connection.
- Whether the game was closed and Update Download Progress was used.
- Whether the title was purchased by the currently selected user and whether it was recently moved or deleted.
- Whether the console is using system memory, a microSD card, or a microSD Express card.
Do not infer a universal fix from an unrelated code. If Nintendo’s instructions require a storage change, account action, or additional diagnostic step, follow that branch rather than cycling through the basic pause procedure indefinitely.

Switch and Switch 2: what carries over
Nintendo publishes a separate Switch 2 support article with the same core recovery flow: confirm connectivity, close software that can pause downloads, restart the console, and test the connection when progress is slow. Those principles apply across generations, but the exact menu labels and supported storage standards should be checked for the model in front of you.
| Issue | Original Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Download paused by active software | Close the game and update download progress | Use the same core flow, checking the Switch 2 menu wording |
| Slow transfer | Run the internet connection test and improve wireless range | Run the model-specific connection test and use reliable wireless range |
| Storage expansion | Check internal memory and a compatible microSD card | Verify which card standard the Switch 2 accepts before purchasing hardware |
| Persistent error code | Use Nintendo’s official code-specific support path | Use the Switch 2 support path for the displayed code |
Do not assume that an accessory or menu path documented for one generation applies unchanged to the other. The generation matters most when you are choosing storage or trying to follow a model-specific settings screen.
Common mistakes that make a stall look worse
Launching another game to test the console
Starting software while the eShop transfer is active can intentionally pause the download again. Test the connection from System Settings instead, and keep games closed until the transfer completes.
Checking only system memory
The console may be using the inserted card as the destination. Inspect both system memory and card capacity before concluding that storage is available.

Using the wrong account after a console move
A user profile that did not buy the title may not be able to set its virtual game card. Select the account that made the purchase.
Deleting immediately after a temporary pause
Deletion is unnecessary for a software-paused or briefly disconnected transfer. Close the game, update progress, restart, and test the connection before taking a destructive action.
A practical recovery order
Use this sequence whenever you are unsure which cause applies:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check that the Switch is connected to the internet.
- Close the running game or application.
- Choose HOME Menu user page → User Settings → Update Download Progress.
- Restart the console if the transfer remains unchanged.
- Run System Settings → Internet → Test Connection if progress is slow.
- Check free space in system memory and the inserted microSD or microSD Express card.
- If the title was deleted or moved, switch to the purchasing Nintendo Account and set its virtual game card.
- For a persistent named error, follow Nintendo’s official support instructions for that code.
This order moves from the quickest and most reversible explanations to storage, account, and code-specific remedies. It also separates a genuinely paused transfer from one that is merely slow.
