The message means your computer’s firmware (BIOS or UEFI) cannot find a usable device from which to start an operating system. The usual reasons are an incorrect boot order that sends the machine to network/PXE boot, an unplugged or undetected SSD or hard drive, a failing drive, or damaged Windows startup files. Check firmware detection and boot order first; those checks tell you whether this is a hardware problem or a Windows repair problem. If the drive is detected and passes diagnostics, use Windows Recovery Environment and Startup Repair before attempting command-line repairs or reinstalling Windows.

What does “No bootable device” mean?

BIOS or UEFI runs before Windows and looks for a boot target. It may be the Windows Boot Manager on a UEFI system or the internal disk on a legacy BIOS system. If firmware cannot find that target, it displays a message such as “No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key.” Microsoft Q&A identifies network boot order, disconnected cabling and drive failure as common causes; HP’s troubleshooting guidance also includes corrupted boot files as a software cause.

The message does not, by itself, prove that your personal files are gone. It only confirms that the firmware did not locate a usable startup path. The next step is to determine whether the internal drive appears in firmware.

What should I do before changing Windows?

  1. Record the exact message. Photograph the screen if you may need to contact the computer maker or a repair service.
  2. Remove accidental boot devices. Shut down and unplug nonessential USB devices, memory cards and external drives. Leave only the charger or power cable, keyboard and display connected.
  3. Enter BIOS or UEFI. Restart and press the key specified in your computer maker’s manual. Esc, F2, F10 and Delete are common examples, but the correct key varies by model.
  4. Do not reinstall Windows yet. Reinstallation can remove data, and it will not repair a drive that is failing or not electrically connected.

If the computer starts after removing an external device, that device was probably ahead of the internal disk in the boot order or contained an incomplete bootable environment. If the message returns, continue with the firmware checks below.

How do I check whether the SSD or hard drive appears in BIOS/UEFI?

Open the firmware’s Storage, Information, System Information or Boot page. Menu names differ between manufacturers, but you are looking for the model name or capacity of the internal HDD or SSD.

If the internal drive is listed

  1. Open the Boot or Boot Order page.
  2. On a UEFI installation, place Windows Boot Manager for the internal drive first.
  3. On a legacy BIOS installation, place the internal drive first.
  4. Move network, PXE or IPv4/IPv6 boot entries below the internal drive unless your organization deliberately uses network boot.
  5. Save changes and restart. The exact command may be Save and Exit, F10 or a similar label.

An incorrect order can produce the same error as a dead disk because firmware tries a network adapter or another empty device before it tries Windows. If the correct entry is already first and the error persists, run the storage diagnostic before attempting software repair.

If the internal drive is missing

A drive absent from the firmware screen is not a Windows boot-file problem yet. It points to a loose cable, poor seating, a power or controller fault, or a failed drive. Power off completely before touching hardware. If your model has a service panel and you are comfortable working inside it, reseat the removable M.2 module or drive cable. Do not open a sealed laptop or force a connector; use the manufacturer’s service instructions or a qualified technician.

After reseating, return to BIOS/UEFI and check detection again. If the drive remains absent, treat it as a hardware failure and prioritize data recovery rather than repeated boot attempts. Microsoft Q&A lists disconnected cabling and failed drives among the common causes of this message.

How can I test the drive before repairing Windows?

Run the computer maker’s built-in storage test from its diagnostics menu. A failed test means the storage hardware is suspect; do not install Windows on that drive. If the data matters, stop unnecessary power cycles and arrange a backup, clone or professional recovery while the drive is still readable.

Example: HP hardware diagnostics

On many HP computers, pressing Esc during startup and then choosing F2 opens HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. Other manufacturers use different keys and menu names, so follow the manual for your exact model. HP’s support discussion recommends diagnostics and reseating when the disk is not detected: HP troubleshooting guidance.

Record the test result or failure code. A passing short test does not guarantee that every sector is healthy, but it supports proceeding to Windows startup repair when the drive is consistently visible in firmware.

How do I run Windows Startup Repair?

Use Startup Repair when BIOS/UEFI detects the internal drive and diagnostics do not report a hardware failure. Microsoft says the tool targets missing or damaged system files, a corrupted boot configuration data (BCD) store, a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers and certain registry errors.

  1. Start Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) from an existing recovery drive or from Windows installation media.
  2. Choose Repair your PC rather than starting a new installation.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Select Advanced options.
  5. Select Startup Repair and choose the Windows installation when prompted.

Microsoft’s step-by-step description is available in Startup Repair. The tool may restart the computer several times. When it finishes, remove the USB drive and test the internal disk. If Startup Repair says it could not repair the PC, keep the drive and data decisions separate from the next command-line step.

How do I create Windows installation media?

If you cannot open WinRE from the computer itself, use a separate working computer to create Windows installation media on a USB flash drive. Microsoft specifies a drive of at least 8 GB. Boot the affected computer from that USB, select the language and keyboard options, then choose Repair your PC to enter WinRE instead of installing Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains additional entry methods and recovery-drive behavior in Windows Recovery Environment. If BitLocker encryption is enabled, WinRE may ask for the BitLocker recovery key before it can access the Windows volume.

When should I use Bootrec, and what commands are safe?

Use Bootrec only after you have confirmed that the correct Windows installation is on the detected drive and that the firmware mode matches the disk layout. Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt in WinRE. Microsoft documents these commands:

bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

Identify the Windows volume first

WinRE can assign different drive letters than normal Windows. Before rebuilding the boot configuration, check which volume contains the Windows folder; for example, use dir C:Windows, then check another letter if that path is absent. Do not add an installation to the BCD store until you have verified that it is the correct copy.

Understand the firmware-mode limitation

/fixmbr applies to the legacy BIOS/MBR boot path. UEFI/GPT systems boot through an EFI System Partition and Windows Boot Manager. The partition commands needed for UEFI repair differ from legacy repair, so a generic sequence copied from the internet can make the situation harder to diagnose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if /fixboot says “Access is denied”?

Stop instead of repeating the command. The error commonly means that WinRE has not identified or mounted the EFI/System Reserved partition correctly, or that the current installation uses a different firmware layout. Recheck the Windows volume, identify the appropriate system partition with care, and use Microsoft’s recovery guidance or a technician familiar with UEFI/GPT before changing partition assignments.

If /scanos finds no installation, verify the drive letter and inspect whether the Windows directory is present. A missing installation can indicate a damaged file system, an incorrectly selected disk or a failing drive; it is not a reason to format immediately.

Which fix should I choose?

Use the least disruptive action that matches the evidence. The decision points are drive detection, diagnostic results, firmware mode, data value and whether the action can erase the existing installation.

Action When it fits Relative disruption Effect on personal files
Change boot order The internal drive is visible and Windows Boot Manager or the disk is not first. Low Does not erase files.
Reseat drive or cable The drive is absent from firmware and the device is serviceable. Low, but requires powering off and opening supported hardware Does not intentionally erase files.
Startup Repair The drive is detected and diagnostics pass. Low; automated recovery Designed to repair startup components rather than remove personal files.
Bootrec commands A confirmed boot-configuration problem in WinRE, with the correct installation and firmware mode identified. Moderate; command-line work can worsen a misidentified layout Use only after confirming the target installation.
Reset or reinstall Windows Repair and recovery options fail or the installation is irreparably damaged. High Microsoft warns that installation-media reinstalls can remove data.
Drive replacement or data recovery The disk is missing from firmware or fails diagnostics. High; hardware service required Recover or clone needed data before replacement whenever possible.

Microsoft’s broader decision tree places reset and reinstall after less destructive recovery choices; see Recovery options in Windows. Reinstalling Windows onto a drive that fails diagnostics is not a repair for the underlying hardware.

How do I protect files before a reset or replacement?

  • Stop destructive actions. Do not format partitions, delete the BCD store or start a clean installation while you are still deciding whether the disk contains needed files.
  • Use another computer or a recovery environment. If the disk is readable, copy critical documents to an external drive before attempting more repairs.
  • Plan for encryption. BitLocker can require its recovery key in WinRE; without the key, encrypted data may remain inaccessible even when the hardware is healthy.
  • Use professional recovery for valuable data. If diagnostics fail, the drive clicks, disappears intermittently or cannot be read, minimize power-on time and choose a reputable provider whose location, pricing and capabilities you have verified.

Only after files are backed up or deliberately abandoned should you reset or reinstall. For a replacement SSD, match the computer’s interface, physical size and capacity; the exact part cannot be selected without the device model.

What if the error returns after a successful repair?

The computer keeps choosing network boot

Return to BIOS/UEFI and confirm that Windows Boot Manager or the internal disk remains first. Move PXE or network entries lower. If the setting will not persist after shutdown, the firmware may be losing configuration or the machine may be managed by an organization; consult the manufacturer or administrator rather than repeatedly rebuilding Windows.

The drive appears sometimes and disappears at other times

Intermittent detection points more strongly to a loose connection, failing drive, power problem or controller issue than to a one-time BCD error. Copy data while the drive is readable, run the maker’s diagnostics, and prepare a replacement instead of relying on Startup Repair as a permanent solution.

Startup Repair loops back to the same message

Re-enter WinRE and verify the Windows volume letter. If the drive passes diagnostics, inspect the boot configuration with bootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd. If the installation is not found or the disk develops read errors, stop command-line changes and move to data recovery or hardware replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer has no internal drive listed at all

Skip Windows commands. Recheck seating only on serviceable hardware, run offline diagnostics if available, and arrange repair or replacement. Software repair cannot make firmware detect a physically failed or disconnected device.

When is a clean Windows installation appropriate?

A clean installation is a last resort when the disk is healthy, files are backed up, Startup Repair and suitable boot-configuration repairs have failed, and the existing Windows installation is irreparably damaged. Use Microsoft installation media or the computer maker’s recovery media as appropriate; OEM media can provide hardware-specific drivers and recovery tools. Confirm the target disk and partitions on every setup screen because deleting or formatting them removes existing data.

If the disk itself failed diagnostics or remains absent from firmware, replace or recover the drive first. Installing Windows on defective storage will not cure the “no bootable device” condition and can make later data recovery more difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the “no bootable device” message proof that Windows was deleted?

No. It reports a firmware boot-detection failure, so Windows and your files may still be intact on the disk. Confirm drive visibility and run diagnostics before assuming the installation is gone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a recovery USB made on another computer?

Yes. Microsoft’s recovery environment can be started from Windows installation media created on a separate working computer. Use a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB, then choose Repair your PC rather than Install now.

Why does WinRE ask for a BitLocker recovery key?

WinRE may need the key to unlock an encrypted Windows volume before it can inspect or repair startup files. If the key is unavailable, avoid formatting the disk and resolve access through the account or organization that enabled BitLocker.

Should I keep trying to boot a drive that fails diagnostics?

No. Repeated power cycles can reduce the chance of recovering data from an unstable disk. Preserve the drive’s state, copy or clone readable data if possible, and use a verified recovery or repair service before replacement.
