Work from the outside in: select and test the correct HDMI input, reseat every connection, use a suitably rated USB-C PD charger, start the Ally without accessories, force-restart it if necessary, and reconnect the dock in a minimal configuration. If the Ally itself has no lights, fan activity, or response after charging and a forced restart, stop troubleshooting the dock and contact ASUS support.
What “no signal” means on an Xbox Ally dock
The dock must carry two different things through its USB-C host connection: DisplayPort Alt Mode video from the Ally and USB Power Delivery for power negotiation. A USB-C cable or port that supports charging only cannot create a docked picture. ASUS describes the ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 this way: it “works over a single USB-C cable with devices that support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery.”

That distinction explains a common symptom: the Ally appears to charge, USB accessories light up, or the dock’s Ethernet works, yet the television says No signal. Power and peripherals can be working while the video link, HDMI cable, display input, or display-mode negotiation is failing. Treat those as separate tests rather than assuming that charging proves the entire dock path is healthy.

The ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 has one HDMI 2.1 output and is intended to drive one external TV or monitor at a time. ASUS lists these maximum modes:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Dock capability | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| HDMI output | One external TV or monitor; there is no second simultaneous HDMI display. |
| Maximum listed video modes | Up to 3840×2160 at 144 Hz or 7680×4320 at 30 Hz. |
| Features | HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), and automatic low-latency/game mode support when the connected equipment supports them. |
| Host connection | Fixed 60 cm USB-C cable to the Ally; the handheld must support DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. |
| Other ports | Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB-C power input rated up to 100 W. |
| Power delivered to the Ally | Up to 80 W, subject to the charger, dock, cable and Ally’s own charging limits. |
Those are capability ceilings, not a promise that every Ally, HDMI cable, television, or monitor will reach them. ASUS explicitly says the achieved resolution and refresh rate depend on the handheld, HDMI cable, and display. A display that cannot accept the selected mode can lose the picture even though the dock and Ally are otherwise functional.
Follow this isolation procedure
Do the checks in order. After each major change, wait several seconds for the television to renegotiate the signal before adding another device or setting.
1. Select the HDMI input actually used by the dock
- Look at the label beside the television or monitor’s HDMI socket, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- On the display remote or front panel, select that exact input. Do not rely on automatic input switching.
- If the display has enhanced, high-bandwidth, or gaming options for a particular HDMI socket, use the port and setting recommended by that display’s manual.
With the display on the wrong input, every other component can be working and the result will still look like a dead dock.
2. Reseat every part of the signal and power path
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both the dock and the display.
- Reconnect the dock’s USB-C power input.
- Disconnect and reconnect the fixed USB-C host cable at the Ally, making sure the plug is fully inserted and not under sideways strain.
- Turn the television or monitor off, wait a few seconds, turn it back on, and select the dock’s HDMI input again.
Inspect the plugs for bent shells, damaged housings, or debris. Do not force a connector into the Ally. If moving the HDMI cable makes the picture flicker, disappears, or return, substitute the cable rather than treating that behavior as a Windows setting.
3. Test the display and HDMI cable separately
Connect another known-working source to the same display input. This tells you whether the input can show a picture at all. Then test the dock with another known-good HDMI cable and, if available, another TV or monitor. Use a cable rated for the mode you are asking it to carry; a damaged or inadequate cable may not sustain high-resolution or high-refresh output.

Keep the test simple: one dock, one HDMI cable, one display, and no USB accessories. If a second display works, the original display’s input, mode setting, or compatibility is the likely issue. If neither display works but the Ally works undocked, continue with the power and restart checks.
4. Verify dock power with the right charger
The DG310 does not include a charger. ASUS recommends a USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at 100 W or higher to reach the dock’s full 80 W output. Connect the charger directly to the dock’s USB-C power input, not to one of its data ports.

A dock can charge peripherals while video negotiation still fails. Therefore, a lit USB accessory is not a sufficient power test. Replace the charger temporarily with a known-good, adequately rated USB-C PD supply and remove high-draw accessories while diagnosing. A lower-rated supply may still provide some charging, but it cannot be assumed to provide the dock’s full output or stable headroom for the Ally and attached devices.
5. Start the Ally without the dock or other accessories
Disconnect the dock, USB devices, external storage, and microSD card. Press the Ally’s Power button normally. If the battery may be empty, connect the Ally’s original charger and leave it charging for 15–20 minutes before trying again.
This step separates a display handshake problem from a handheld that is not booting. Watch for the power LED, fan movement, startup sound, or any image on the built-in screen. If the Ally starts by itself, let Windows load fully before reconnecting anything. If it will not start alone, do not keep changing HDMI cables; follow the forced-restart step and then escalate if it remains unresponsive.

6. Perform a forced restart when the Ally is frozen or black
ASUS support’s documented instruction is to hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds. Release it, wait a moment, and press Power once to start the Ally again. If the battery was depleted, charge it for 15–20 minutes first.

A forced restart can clear a stalled graphics or USB-C negotiation state, but it does not repair a damaged cable or supply. Remove the dock and all peripherals during this restart. Confirm that the Ally reaches its own Windows desktop or lock screen before testing the dock again.
7. Reconnect in a minimal, controlled order
Once the undocked Ally is running, use this practical isolation order:
- Shut down or wake the display and select the HDMI input connected to the dock.
- Connect the known-good USB-C PD charger to the dock.
- Connect the HDMI cable from the dock to the selected display input.
- Leave USB storage, controllers, Ethernet, and other accessories unplugged.
- Connect the dock’s fixed USB-C host cable to the running Ally.
- Wait for the display to detect the signal. Only after video is stable should you add other USB devices one at a time.
This order is an isolation method based on ASUS’s advice to remove accessories and restart; it is not a guaranteed manufacturer-required sequence. Adding one accessory at a time makes it possible to identify a device or cable that causes the signal to disappear.
8. Check Windows display output only after the physical path works
If the TV or monitor shows an image but it is duplicated, placed on the wrong screen, or using an unusable mode, open Windows display settings and choose the external display. Select a conservative resolution and refresh rate first, confirm that the picture is stable, and then increase them gradually. Remember that the Ally, HDMI cable, and display jointly determine what modes are reliable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not begin with driver changes when the display says No signal and the Ally cannot show a docked image at all. Software settings cannot compensate for a disconnected HDMI plug, missing PD power, or a USB-C path without DisplayPort Alt Mode.
Use the DG310’s limits to choose sensible settings
The DG310 can advertise high-bandwidth HDMI features, but the handheld is the source of the rendered frames. A 4K/144 Hz or 8K/30 Hz capability in the dock’s specification does not mean every game, Ally model, cable, or display can deliver that mode. Start at a mode the display is known to accept, then test higher refresh rates.
- For a blank screen after changing refresh rate: wait for Windows to revert, or reconnect to the Ally’s built-in display and select a lower, known-compatible mode before reconnecting the dock.
- For intermittent blackouts: replace the HDMI cable, disable the most demanding refresh or HDR combination temporarily, and test with no USB accessories.
- For a picture with tearing or inconsistent frame pacing: check whether the display and game support VRR together; treat VRR as an optional feature, not a requirement for basic video.
- For delayed or missing game-mode behavior: allow the display to finish switching inputs, then check its own automatic game-mode setting. The dock can trigger automatic TV Game Mode when a ROG Xbox Ally is connected, but the television’s firmware and settings still govern the final behavior.
Charging works but video does not: what that narrows down
If the Ally’s battery indicator shows charging, the charger and at least part of the USB-C power path are operating. That does not confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode, HDMI continuity, or a successful display handshake. Concentrate on these remaining variables:
- Wrong HDMI input or a display input that is disabled or configured for a different mode.
- Damaged, marginal, or mode-incompatible HDMI cable.
- Loose connection at the dock, display, or Ally’s USB-C host plug.
- Charger power that is below the dock’s recommended 100 W input, especially with other devices attached.
- A graphics or USB-C negotiation state that clears only after the Ally is undocked and force-restarted.
Run the display/cable swap and the undocked restart before buying additional hardware. If a different cable and display produce the same result while the Ally’s built-in screen works normally, the dock or its host connection becomes the leading suspect.

When the Ally’s own screen is black
A dock problem and a non-booting Ally require different responses. Disconnect the dock and every accessory, connect the original charger, and allow 15–20 minutes of charging if the battery may be empty. Then hold Power for 10–15 seconds and press it once again.

Escalate to ASUS support if any of these remain true:
- The Ally has no power LED, fan activity, startup sound, or other sign of life.
- It will not start even while connected to its original charger.
- The built-in screen stays black after the forced restart and accessory removal.
- The docked picture remains absent after testing a known-good charger, HDMI cable, and display.
At that point, possible causes include the battery, power button, motherboard, USB-C connector, or dock hardware. Those components require service rather than repeated HDMI experiments. ASUS’s support guidance specifically directs users to contact support when the console shows no signs of life, will not start while plugged in, or remains faulty after the isolation checks.
Software and control issues after the picture returns
Sometimes the dock produces a picture, but Windows controls are awkward: the display is visible while the built-in controls do not behave as expected. The ROG Xbox Ally family supports Armoury Crate SE, whose Desktop Mode is intended to make Windows navigation easier with the handheld’s controls. If Armoury Crate SE was removed, ASUS provides a reinstall path through its support resources.
These software options address control and launcher usability, not a physical no-signal condition. Finish the cable, power, display, and restart procedure first. ASUS documents the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as supported model families for the relevant software environment.
Quick symptom-to-action guide
| Symptom | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| TV says “No signal,” Ally’s built-in screen works | Select the correct HDMI input, reseat both ends, test another HDMI cable/display, then reconnect the dock after an undocked restart. |
| Dock charges the Ally but never shows video | Use a 100 W-or-higher USB-C PD charger, verify the fixed host USB-C connection, and test the HDMI path independently. |
| Picture appears, then cuts out at high refresh | Return to a known-compatible resolution/refresh rate and substitute a cable rated for the requested mode. |
| USB accessories work but display is blank | Treat power and data as separate: remove accessories, test the HDMI cable/display, and retry with adequate PD power. |
| Ally has no lights or response even when charging | Charge 15–20 minutes, force-restart by holding Power 10–15 seconds, and contact ASUS if it remains unresponsive. |
| Video works but Windows controls are inconvenient | Use Armoury Crate SE Desktop Mode; reinstall it from ASUS support if necessary. |
What to have ready before contacting support
Record the Ally model, dock model, charger wattage, HDMI cable used, display model, and the exact point at which the image disappears. Note whether the Ally’s built-in screen works, whether the dock charges it, and which combinations of cable and display you tested. This information lets support distinguish a display handshake from a no-boot or hardware fault without repeating every basic check.
The DG310 is documented as optimized for ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, but optimization does not override the requirements for USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB Power Delivery, a capable HDMI cable, and a compatible display. If those requirements are met and the Ally runs normally undocked yet no tested display ever receives a signal, service for the dock or the Ally’s USB-C hardware is the appropriate next step.
