If a Java application reports “SSO Failed: Native SSPI library not loaded,” “ntlmauth.dll is missing,” or a similar SQL Server Windows-authentication error, the usual fix is to install the architecture-matched native library from the application’s supported jTDS package, put it in the JVM’s native-library path, and restart the Java process. A 32-bit Java runtime needs the x86 library even on 64-bit Windows; a 64-bit runtime needs x64.

ntlmauth.dll is generally an application library used by the jTDS JDBC driver, not a universal Windows system DLL. Do not download an unverified copy or place one blindly in C:WindowsSystem32. First identify the Java process that fails, preserve the existing configuration, and separate a DLL-loading problem from a later SQL Server or Windows authentication-policy problem.

What is ntlmauth.dll, and why does a Java application need it?

ntlmauth.dll is the native Windows component that the jTDS JDBC driver can use for integrated authentication to Microsoft SQL Server. The Java code loads the native library so the application can participate in Windows SSPI-based sign-in instead of sending a separate SQL login. Atlassian documents Jira installations that fail because this native SSPI library is not loaded, while Talend documents the same x86/x64 library layout for database connectors.

NTLM is a family of Windows authentication protocols. Microsoft describes the MSV authentication package and Netlogon as parts of user and pass-through authentication, but the exact result depends on the application, account, domain, network, and Windows policy. A missing or unloadable DLL is therefore only one possible failure point.

  • Library-load failure: the JVM cannot find the file, finds the wrong architecture, cannot read it, or loads an incompatible copy.
  • Authentication failure after loading: the native library starts, but SQL Server permissions, domain trust, name resolution, credentials, or NTLM policy reject the sign-in.

The distinction matters because replacing a DLL cannot repair a denied database login, and changing an authentication policy cannot make a missing native library appear.

What should I record before changing files?

Capture the operating context first so you can undo a change and show an administrator exactly which process failed. Record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The complete error text and the application name and version.
  • The Java or JRE version reported by the failing application.
  • Whether the Java virtual machine (JVM) is x86 or x64.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • The jTDS version and the SQL Server host or instance being contacted.
  • The effective java.library.path used by the failing process.
  • The account that runs the application, especially if it is a Windows service rather than an interactive desktop process.
  • The original path and file details of any existing ntlmauth.dll copy.

Do not assume that the java command in your own terminal is the Java runtime used by a service, scheduler, application server, or Jira installation. The process that produces the error is the one whose architecture and library path matter.

How do I determine whether the failing JVM is 32-bit or 64-bit?

Match the DLL to the JVM, not simply to the Windows edition. A 64-bit operating system can run a 32-bit Java runtime, and that runtime can load only the x86 native library.

Check an interactive Java installation

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Run java -version and note the vendor and version.
  3. Run java -XshowSettings:properties -version. In the output, inspect the JVM and architecture information and note java.library.path.
  4. If several Java installations exist, run the command with the full path to the executable that launches the application, for example "C:Pathtojava.exe" -XshowSettings:properties -version.

Some Java builds identify a 64-bit VM explicitly in the version output; others expose the architecture through the VM name or system properties. Task Manager can also help: on supported Windows versions, a “(32 bit)” label beside a process indicates a 32-bit process, but the service’s configured executable remains the authoritative source.

Check a Windows service or application server

  1. Open the service’s Properties dialog and inspect the executable path, or inspect the application server’s startup script and service wrapper configuration.
  2. Run the architecture and library-path checks against that exact Java executable, not the one found first on your user PATH.
  3. After a restart, confirm the new process path and bitness in Task Manager or the service’s logs.
Failing JVM Required ntlmauth.dll Common mistake
32-bit (x86) x86 build Using x64 because Windows is 64-bit
64-bit (x64) x64 build Using the x86 file from an older application bundle

Where can I obtain a safe copy of ntlmauth.dll?

Use the DLL supplied with the application vendor’s supported jTDS distribution or obtain the supported jTDS package through the application’s documented channel. This keeps the native library aligned with the JDBC driver and the application’s deployment model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Talend’s database guidance shows the expected package layout as x86/SSO/ntlmauth.dll and x64/SSO/ntlmauth.dll. Select the directory that matches the JVM established in the previous section. Atlassian’s Jira guidance likewise treats the file as part of the application’s SQL Server integration rather than as a general Windows component.

A generic DLL archive is not a safe substitute. An arbitrary file may be for the wrong architecture, a different jTDS release, or an unrelated program with the same filename. It may also omit companion files or have no trustworthy provenance. Never advise copying an unverified file into C:WindowsSystem32 just because the name ends in .dll.

Where should I put ntlmauth.dll so Java can load it?

Place the matching file in the application’s documented native-library directory, or configure the JVM’s java.library.path to include the directory containing it. Talend documents the JRE bin directory as one possible location and also describes configuring java.library.path; the application’s own deployment instructions take precedence.

Use the application’s native directory when one is documented

  1. Stop the Java application or service.
  2. Open the application or jTDS package directory and locate its native-library folder.
  3. Copy the architecture-matched ntlmauth.dll there, preserving the package’s existing folder structure.
  4. Keep the file under the application’s control rather than placing it in a global Windows directory.

Configure java.library.path when required

  1. Find the startup script, service wrapper, or application-server setting that supplies JVM options.
  2. Add a property such as -Djava.library.path=C:pathtothenativefolder. If the path already contains directories, preserve them and separate entries according to the launcher’s Windows syntax.
  3. Verify the effective value by running the same Java executable with -XshowSettings:properties -version, or by enabling the application’s startup diagnostics.
  4. Make sure the service account can read and execute the directory and file.

Setting a path for your interactive shell does not automatically set it for a Windows service. Service wrappers often use their own environment, a bundled JRE, or a different configuration file.

How do I replace a stale or duplicate copy without losing a rollback option?

Duplicate native libraries can make a correct replacement appear ineffective because the JVM may load an older or wrong-architecture copy first. Change one location at a time and keep an original copy.

  1. Record the full path, file size, version information, and modification date of each existing ntlmauth.dll.
  2. Copy the original file to a dated backup outside the active search path, or rename it to a non-DLL extension such as ntlmauth.dll.old after stopping the process.
  3. Search the application directory, bundled JRE directories, service working directory, and every directory listed in the effective native-library path.
  4. Remove or rename only the duplicate that the application documentation identifies as stale. Do not delete unrelated system files.
  5. Install the supported, architecture-matched file in the intended directory and document the change.

If you are unsure which directory wins, temporarily reduce the search path to one known-good location rather than scattering copies across the system. Keep the backup until the application has completed a real authentication test.

Why is a restart required after replacing the DLL?

Java native libraries are loaded into the process during startup and are normally retained for that process lifetime. Restart the application, service, or application server after changing the file or java.library.path.

  1. Stop the process cleanly and wait until the old Java process disappears.
  2. Start it through its normal service or application launcher so it uses the intended JRE and options.
  3. Review the startup log for the effective Java executable, library path, and any native-load message.
  4. Run a controlled Windows-authentication connection to the target SQL Server.
  5. Record whether the error changed from “library not loaded” to an authentication or SQL permission error; that change often proves the DLL-loading stage succeeded.

What should I check if the error remains after installing the file?

The message still says the native library is not loaded

  • Confirm that the file name is exactly ntlmauth.dll and that the process can read it.
  • Recheck the JVM architecture. A 32-bit JVM cannot load an x64 DLL, and a 64-bit JVM cannot load an x86 DLL.
  • Check the effective java.library.path of the actual failing process, not a different Java installation.
  • Look for an earlier duplicate in the search path and remove or rename it only after making a backup.
  • Verify that the jTDS version and the application’s supported package are compatible.
  • Check whether endpoint security or file permissions blocked loading; involve the system administrator before creating exclusions.

The library loads, but SQL Server still rejects the login

At this point, treat the issue as authentication or authorization rather than a missing-DLL problem. Check the SQL Server login or Windows account permissions, the account’s domain membership, domain trust, DNS and host-name resolution, clock and network reachability, and the connection string’s target instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft identifies Kerberos as the preferred protocol for Active Directory environments while NTLM remains supported in several scenarios. The application, account, and domain configuration determine which protocol is actually negotiated. A successful native-library load does not guarantee that the account is allowed to connect.

The command-line test works, but the service fails

This usually indicates different runtime context rather than a random DLL failure. Compare the service’s executable path, JVM options, working directory, environment variables, account permissions, and java.library.path with the interactive test. A service may use a bundled 32-bit JRE while your terminal uses a system-wide 64-bit JRE.

The application fails only after a Windows update or policy change

Review recent Windows authentication-policy changes with your administrator before weakening security settings. Microsoft says updates released on October 13, 2026 change default handling of NTLMv1-derived credentials from audit to enforcement in affected configurations. Microsoft specifically notes possible effects on some MS-CHAPv2 Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and VPN connections. That change concerns legacy authentication policy; it does not repair a missing ntlmauth.dll.

How can I tell a DLL problem from an NTLM policy problem?

Use the error transition and logs as evidence. A native-load message that disappears after installing the matching library indicates progress to the authentication stage. A login-denied, domain-trust, or protocol-policy event after that points to SQL Server, Windows, or network configuration.

Observed result Most likely scope Next diagnostic
“Native SSPI library not loaded” remains File path, architecture, permissions, or jTDS packaging Check the actual JVM, effective library path, and duplicate files
Library-load message disappears; login is denied SQL Server authorization or Windows identity Check account permissions, domain trust, and connection target

Several legacy clients fail after policy updates NTLM or related Windows policy Review Microsoft’s policy guidance and event logs with an administrator

Microsoft’s documentation describes NTLM as a protocol family encompassed in the Windows Msv1_0.dll package and explains the role of authentication components such as MSV and Netlogon. Those system components are not evidence that every application named ntlmauth.dll error is a Windows-service failure; the jTDS native library remains an application deployment issue.

Which repair path is safest for this problem?

Repair path Scope Architecture match Source trust Reversibility Evidence to collect
Use the application’s bundled jTDS library One Java application Choose x86 or x64 for its JVM Highest when documented by the vendor Back up and replace in one directory Application version, jTDS version, startup log
Use the supported jTDS distribution One compatible JDBC deployment Choose for the running JVM Higher than an arbitrary archive Keep the previous package intact Driver compatibility and package layout
Copy to a global Windows directory System-wide and ambiguous Easy to mismatch Not recommended for this application library Harder to trace and roll back Insufficient without application documentation
Change NTLM policy Potentially system-wide Does not solve a missing DLL Requires administrator review Depends on policy backup and change control Windows events, affected clients, and policy history

The first two paths keep the change limited to the Java application and make the architecture decision explicit. A system-wide policy change is justified only when logs show an authentication-policy problem, not merely because a native library cannot be loaded.

What is the final checklist for a safe fix?

  1. Save the exact error and identify the application and failing process.
  2. Determine the JVM bitness and the JRE actually launched by that process.
  3. Record jTDS, application, Java, Windows, and SQL Server details.
  4. Obtain ntlmauth.dll from the supported application or jTDS package.
  5. Select x86/SSO/ntlmauth.dll for a 32-bit JVM or x64/SSO/ntlmauth.dll for a 64-bit JVM.
  6. Back up and document any existing copy.
  7. Place the file in the documented native directory or configure java.library.path.
  8. Check permissions and remove only confirmed stale duplicates.
  9. Restart the Java application or service.
  10. Test Windows authentication and classify the new result as a load, SQL authorization, domain, network, or policy issue.
  11. Review October 13, 2026 NTLMv1 enforcement changes only if affected authentication events support that diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ntlmauth.dll a Windows system file that Windows can restore automatically?

Usually not. In this scenario it is a native library distributed with the jTDS-based application, so Windows System File Checker is not a substitute for restoring the application’s supported package. If the application vendor has a repair or reinstall option, use that package so the driver and native library stay aligned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will installing a newer Java version automatically provide the correct ntlmauth.dll?

No. Java supplies the runtime, while jTDS and the application supply this native authentication library. A Java upgrade can also change which executable launches the service, so recheck the JVM architecture and effective library path after any upgrade.

Can I switch from Windows authentication to a SQL Server login to bypass the DLL?

Only if your organization permits that authentication method and the application supports it. Changing credentials may avoid the native SSPI path, but it changes the security model and does not repair a deployment that is required to use integrated authentication.

Why does the same DLL work for one SQL Server application but not another?

Each application can bundle a different jTDS release, JVM, service account, and native-library path. A file that loads in one process may be the wrong architecture or outside the search path of another, so compare the complete runtime context rather than copying the working application’s file blindly.
