How to Fix Ocarina of Time Remake Speedrun Times That Fail to Save or Record

There is no confirmed shipped bug to fix yet. As of 19 October 2026, Nintendo’s Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still unreleased, with launch scheduled for 5 November 2026. No official source documents a boss-rematch time-saving failure, recovery menu, or patch. If a time disappears after launch, treat it as an unverified failure, preserve the affected save and recording, and follow a controlled test rather than overwriting data.

The safest way to protect a run is to wait for the rematch results screen, verify the correct Switch 2 user profile and save slot, fully restart and update the game, and record locally with game audio. A missing leaderboard proof may be an archive problem rather than a missing in-game result.

What is known before launch

The remake and its rematches

Nintendo describes the Switch 2 version as “completely reborn” and lists both download and package editions. Its overview includes the Hall of Fallen Heroes, where defeated monsters can be rematched. Contemporary pre-release reporting says a timer runs during a boss rematch and that the completed time is recorded. Those details establish the feature, not the behavior of a released build under every failure condition.

Why a confirmed fix does not exist yet

The announced release date is 5 November 2026. Before that date, reports cannot establish whether a time-save defect exists in the public game, how often it occurs, whether it affects one rematch or all rematches, or whether a later patch resolves it. No official post-launch bug-fix notice was available on 19 October 2026, and no reliable frequency statistic has been published.

Identify which record failed

“My time did not save” can describe two separate records. Diagnose them independently before attempting recovery.

Symptom Likely record being checked What to preserve
The rematch ends, but no result appears or the result vanishes after returning to the menu In-game result or save-data persistence The original save slot, user profile, software version, console region, rematch name, and exact sequence of actions
The game shows a result, but a submission has no playable evidence Video-proof persistence The local capture file, its audio track, file-select footage, and the upload or archive status
The game result and the video are both missing Two failures may have occurred Do not overwrite the save; retain every surviving file and document the order of events

A stream page or highlight can fail while the console’s result remains intact. Conversely, a clear video can prove that a timer appeared without proving that the game retained it afterward. Treat the on-screen result and the permanent recording as separate evidence.

Recovery procedure after the game launches

Use this sequence for a missing rematch time. It is designed to preserve evidence first and make the smallest possible test second.

  1. Finish the rematch normally. Allow the boss battle to reach its documented completion state. Do not close the software, suspend the console, or leave the results transition as soon as the boss falls. Wait until the results or time-recording screen has finished displaying.
  2. Capture the result before navigating away. Start a local recording before the test if possible. Keep the result screen visible long enough to establish which rematch was completed and what time the game displayed. A screenshot can supplement the video, but it is not a substitute for an uninterrupted run recording when leaderboard proof is required.
  3. Check the same user profile and save slot. Return to the relevant menu without creating a replacement file. Confirm that the Switch 2 profile used for the run is the profile being checked and that the expected save-data slot is selected. Do not overwrite the affected slot while investigating. Preserve a backup or cloud copy when the console and account configuration support one.
  4. Make a controlled short test. After preserving the original state, perform one short rematch under the same profile and slot. Record the entire test locally, including the menu state before starting, the battle, the completion screen, and the next menu check. A short repeat can show whether the failure is reproducible without consuming the original attempt.
  5. Fully close and relaunch the software. Exit the game rather than merely suspending it, then launch it again and inspect the same profile and slot. If the result returns after a relaunch, note that sequence precisely; do not describe it as a universal workaround until it can be reproduced and verified by other players or an official notice.
  6. Update the game and console. Install any available title update and system update, then repeat the controlled test. Check Nintendo’s support information and patch notes for a notice specific to this remake. At the 19 October 2026 information date, no such notice had been published.
  7. Separate an online submission failure from a game failure. If the game retains the time but a leaderboard page lacks proof, inspect the local recording before repeating the run. A livestream highlight may be muted or become unavailable even when the original capture exists. Upload the permanent local file rather than relying only on a stream highlight.
  8. Stop destructive testing and report the case. If the result still disappears, keep the original save and all recordings untouched. Write down the software version, console region, user profile, save slot, rematch, start and finish sequence, whether the results screen appeared, and what happened after relaunch. Send that information to Nintendo support and, for a leaderboard attempt, to the relevant speedrun moderators.

How to record a run that can be verified

Use a local recording as the master file

Speedrun.com’s Ocarina of Time moderators recommend local recording because Twitch highlights can be muted or become unavailable. Their guidance is explicit: “Because of this, we highly recommend local recording, which can be done simultaneously while streaming, and uploading the local video file to YouTube instead of using Twitch’s highlights.” For a serious attempt, the local file is the master evidence. Streaming can be an additional copy, not the only one.

Before starting, confirm that the capture device is actually writing a file and that the audio meter responds to game sound. Keep the recording running through file select, the complete attempt, the rematch result, and the end of the test. Check the saved file afterward rather than assuming that a stream status indicator means a usable archive exists.

Keep game audio unobstructed

Published speedrun guidance requires full video proof with game audio. Avoid a layout that covers the gameplay or result screen, and do not replace the game soundtrack with a muted or disconnected audio track. Commentary may be present, but it should not prevent moderators from hearing the game.

Show the file-select opening

The published Ocarina of Time intro-skip procedure is to watch the intro once, save in Link’s house, copy the prepared file into slot 1 for the run, and include file select at the beginning of the video. The rules update states: “Time begins on the first frame of player movement in Link’s house.” These are established rules for the published Ocarina of Time category. Use them for the remake only if its moderators publish the same timing boundaries or an explicit adaptation; do not assume that a remake category inherits every rule automatically.

Make the timing boundary visible

A proof video should show the point at which timing begins, the complete gameplay between start and finish, and the result screen or other documented completion state. If a category uses the Link’s-house boundary, leave file select visible before the first frame of movement. If remake moderators publish different boundaries, follow those instructions instead and retain the announcement that defines them.

Decision guide: which remedy addresses which failure?

Approach In-game save persistence Video-proof persistence Reproducibility Preserves the original recording
Wait for the completed results screen Directly tests whether the game reaches its documented recording state Only if the screen is captured High when repeated with the same rematch Yes, if recording starts before completion
Check profile and save slot without overwriting Can reveal a wrong-profile or wrong-slot check Does not repair a missing video High because the original state remains intact Yes
Fully close, relaunch, and retest Tests whether the result appears after a fresh launch Requires a new local capture High if the exact sequence is documented Yes, when the first file is retained
Update software and console Tests against any published title or system correction Does not restore an absent archive by itself Depends on the version being tested Yes
Upload the local file and contact moderators Does not change save data Provides durable proof and an adjudication path High when metadata and full footage are supplied Yes

Common mistakes that make a run appear lost

  • Closing immediately after the boss falls: the battle may be over while the result-writing transition is still in progress. Wait for the completed time-recording screen.
  • Checking a different profile or slot: a correct result can look absent if the console opens another user’s data or another save slot.
  • Overwriting the affected file: creating a new test in the same slot can destroy the state needed to diagnose the first failure.
  • Confusing a stream archive with local evidence: a muted or unavailable highlight is not proof that the console failed to save the run.
  • Submitting without file select: moderators may be unable to verify the start point even when the gameplay itself is visible.
  • Using incomplete audio: a video without full game audio may fail proof requirements.
  • Applying old timing rules automatically: remake categories may define different start and end boundaries. Follow the current category rule set.
  • Calling a one-off relaunch a fix: record the software version and reproduce the behavior before presenting a restart as a workaround.

If the time remains missing

Prepare a useful support report

A support request is more actionable when it describes one reproducible sequence rather than saying only that a time vanished. Include the date, title edition, software version, console region, user profile, save slot, rematch, whether the result screen appeared, whether local video captured it, what happened after closing and relaunching, and whether an update changed the behavior. Keep the affected save and original capture available until support or moderators respond.

Prepare a useful speedrun report

For a leaderboard review, provide the permanent local recording, full game audio, visible file select, the category name, the timing boundary used, and any relevant version information. Explain whether the game displayed a time and whether the issue was only that a stream highlight or upload was unavailable. Moderators can evaluate proof; they cannot infer an unseen result from a missing archive.

Do not promise recovery that has not been demonstrated

Until Nintendo publishes a title-specific notice or multiple reproducible cases establish a method, there is no documented recovery menu or guaranteed save-repair command for this remake. Preserve the evidence, avoid destructive experimentation, and distinguish an observed sequence from a verified fix.

What to expect from launch-day information

The first reliable answers should come from the released build, Nintendo’s support and patch notes, and the rules posted for the remake’s actual speedrun categories. Those sources can establish whether rematch times are stored per profile or slot, whether an export or recovery option exists, and which timing boundaries moderators will accept. Until that information is published after the 5 November 2026 launch, reports of a specific boss-rematch save bug remain unverified.
