PHP oci8.dll errors usually mean that the OCI8 extension, the Oracle client libraries, or the PHP configuration do not match. Fix the problem by identifying the PHP installation used by your web server, installing an OCI8 build for that PHP version, placing the DLL in the active extension_dir, adding the matching Oracle Instant Client directory to the system PATH, restarting the service, and testing with phpinfo() and oci_connect(). The same process resolves “Call to undefined function oci_connect()”, “Unable to load dynamic library”, many Apache startup crashes, and several Oracle connection errors.
OCI8 is not an Oracle database server. It is PHP’s extension layer plus compatible Oracle client libraries. The exact PHP version, Windows architecture, extension filename, Oracle client version, and process startup environment all matter.

php_oci8.dll is the Windows build of PHP’s OCI8 extension. It lets PHP programs connect to Oracle Database through Oracle’s client runtime libraries. Loading the extension therefore requires two separate pieces: the PHP OCI8 DLL and a compatible Oracle client installation. Installing only one of them is a common reason the file appears to be present while PHP still reports a missing module.
The PHP Documentation Group identifies an incorrectly configured Oracle environment as the most common OCI8 installation problem. On Windows, that environment includes the active php.ini, the directory named by extension_dir, the Oracle client directory in PATH, and the account and service that launch Apache, IIS, PHP-FPM, or another web process.

Version facts to check before changing files
- OCI8 3 is bundled with PHP 8.0 through PHP 8.3. Starting with PHP 8.4, install OCI8 from PECL instead of expecting it in the standard PHP distribution.
- OCI8 requires Oracle 10g-or-later client libraries. Current PECL guidance uses Oracle Database 11.2-or-later client libraries for current OCI8 releases, while OCI8 3.0 and earlier can link with 10g-or-later clients.
- PECL lists OCI8 3.4.1 as a stable release dated 2025-12-23. Treat that as a dated snapshot and verify the package page and compatibility notes before using a version-specific command.
Do not assume that a DLL downloaded for one PHP release will work with another. Match the PHP major and minor version, Windows architecture, and the build characteristics of the PHP installation that actually runs your application.
How do I identify the PHP installation and configuration that are actually in use?
Start by proving which PHP executable and configuration file are active. A command prompt can point to one PHP installation while Apache or IIS loads another, so checking only the command line can produce a false success.

Which OCI8 build should I install for my PHP version?
Choose the extension release that the OCI8 project documents for your PHP branch. The following commands are the documented version routes; check current PECL availability before running them because package releases change.
| PHP version | Documented installation route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PHP 8.2 and newer | pecl install oci8 |
Use the current PECL package compatible with the installed PHP branch. |
| PHP 8.1 | pecl install oci8-3.2.1 |
Use the documented OCI8 3.2.1 package for this PHP branch. |
| PHP 8.0 | pecl install oci8-3.0.1 |
Use the documented OCI8 3.0.1 package for this PHP branch. |
| PHP 7 | pecl install oci8-2.2.0 |
Use the documented OCI8 2.2.0 package for PHP 7. |
PHP 8.0 through 8.3 distributions may already include a matching OCI8 binary in the PHP ext directory. PHP 8.4 and later require the PECL route. Do not enable both a bundled DLL and a PECL DLL: duplicate loads can cause startup warnings or crashes.
How do I install the Oracle client libraries?
If PHP runs on a separate application host, install Oracle Instant Client Basic or Basic Light on that host. The Oracle database server software is not required on the PHP machine. If you compile OCI8 from source, install the matching Instant Client SDK as well as Basic or Basic Light.

Use a consistent client architecture
The Oracle client architecture must match the PHP process architecture. A 64-bit PHP process needs the 64-bit client libraries; a 32-bit PHP process needs 32-bit libraries. Also keep the client generation compatible with the OCI8 release: current PECL guidance calls for Oracle 11.2-or-later client libraries, while OCI8 3.0 and earlier support 10g-or-later clients.
Choose one intended Oracle installation
Hosts that have a full Oracle Client, an Oracle Database installation, and Instant Client side by side are vulnerable to DLL conflicts. Decide which client supplies the libraries for this PHP application. Mixing directories from different Oracle installations in PATH can make the extension load unpredictably or crash the web server.
How do I place and enable the OCI8 DLL?
After obtaining a compatible binary, place it where the active PHP installation expects extensions and enable exactly one OCI8 module.
- Open the
php.iniidentified byphp --inior by the web server’sphpinfo()output. - Read the
extension_dirvalue. It may be an absolute path or a path relative to the PHP directory. - Copy the Windows OCI8 DLL into that directory. Depending on the PHP package and Oracle client generation, the filename may be
php_oci8.dll,php_oci8_11g.dll, orphp_oci8_12c.dll. - Enable only the line matching the file you installed. For example, use one of
extension=php_oci8.dll,extension=php_oci8_11g.dll, orextension=php_oci8_12c.dll. Remove the leading semicolon if the line is commented out. - Search the entire configuration and additional-INI directories for other
oci8lines. Comment out duplicates so only one OCI8 DLL is loaded.
Do not rename a DLL to make it fit a configuration line. The filename, binary compatibility, and enabled line must agree. If your PHP distribution supplies an OCI8 file in its own ext directory, use that matching file rather than mixing binaries from unrelated packages.
How do I make Windows find the Oracle libraries before PHP starts?
Add the directory containing the Oracle client DLLs to the system PATH, then restart the process that runs PHP. A PATH change made after Apache, IIS, or PHP-FPM has started is invisible to that already-running process.
- Open Windows System Properties, choose Advanced, then Environment Variables.
- Under the system variables, edit
Pathand add the intended Instant Client directory. Put it ahead of obsolete Oracle client directories. - Apply the change and close all command prompts that were open before the edit.
- Restart Apache, IIS, PHP-FPM, or the relevant Windows service. If the service is managed by a control panel, use that panel’s restart action as well.
- For a service running under a dedicated account, verify that the account can read the Instant Client directory and that the service receives the system environment.
Do not rely on putenv() inside a PHP script to set Oracle variables. Oracle libraries may be loaded and initialized before the script runs, so setting the environment in application code can be too late.

How do I verify that OCI8 loaded correctly?
Verify in layers so you can distinguish a PHP loading problem from an Oracle naming or listener problem.
- Run
php -mand look foroci8. If it is absent, stay on the extension, configuration, and dependency checks rather than debugging database credentials. - Reload the web-server
phpinfo()page. Search for “oci8”, confirm the loaded extension path, and inspect the environment values visible to the web process. - Review the web-server error log immediately after a restart. PHP often records the missing dependency or incompatible module there even when the browser shows only a generic HTTP error.
- Test a known-good connection with a minimal script. For example:
<?php
$username = 'known_user';
$password = 'known_password';
$connection_string = 'host/service';
$connection = oci_connect($username, $password, $connection_string);
if (!$connection) {
$error = oci_error();
die($error['message']);
}
echo 'OCI8 connection succeeded';
?>
Use a real host and service name appropriate to your Oracle environment, and protect credentials in production. A successful php -m check proves the extension loaded; it does not prove that the listener, service name, network route, or account is correct.

What should I do for “Call to undefined function oci_connect()”?
This message means PHP reached your code without loading OCI8. Check the configuration used by the web request, not only the CLI installation.
- Confirm that the browser-facing
phpinfo()page shows the expected PHP version andLoaded Configuration File. - Verify that the enabled
extension=line is not commented out and uses the exact installed DLL filename. - Check that the DLL is in the active
extension_dir, not merely in the PHP root directory. - Search additional-INI folders for a conflicting configuration or a second OCI8 line.
- Restart the web service after every configuration or PATH change.
Once php -m and phpinfo() both show OCI8, the undefined-function error should become a connection or application-level issue instead.
How do I fix “Unable to load dynamic library” or “The specified module could not be found”?
Windows may report the OCI8 DLL as missing when the file exists but one of its Oracle runtime dependencies is absent or incompatible. Check all of the following:
- The
extension_dirpath points to the directory containing the DLL. - The filename in
php.iniexactly matches the installed file. - The Oracle Instant Client directory is in the system
PATHbefore the process starts. - PHP architecture and Oracle client architecture match.
- The OCI8 release is appropriate for the PHP version and the Oracle client generation.
- Old Oracle client directories are not taking precedence in
PATH. - There is only one enabled OCI8 extension line.
Restart the service and inspect its error log after each change. If the message changes from “module could not be found” to an Oracle naming error, the DLL-loading stage is usually complete and you can move to connection configuration.

Why does Apache or PHP crash when it starts?
A startup crash usually points to incompatible or conflicting Oracle libraries rather than a bad SQL statement. Remove duplicate OCI8 lines, choose one Oracle client installation, and place its directory ahead of obsolete Oracle paths. Confirm that the selected client and OCI8 binary match the PHP architecture and release.
Temporarily disable OCI8 to confirm the cause: comment out the extension line, restart Apache, and check whether the crash disappears. Then re-enable a single, correctly matched build and review the web-server error log. Do not leave multiple Oracle homes in the startup path while testing.
How do I resolve ORA-12154 or ORA-12514 after the DLL loads?
These errors generally indicate Oracle naming or listener configuration, not a missing PHP extension. OCI8 is loaded, but the database identifier cannot be resolved or the listener does not know the requested service.
- Check that
tnsnames.oracontains the alias used by the application. - Review
sqlnet.orafor naming-method settings that affect alias resolution. - Set
TNS_ADMINin the environment visible to the web service if the network configuration files are outside the default Oracle location. - Try an Easy Connect string such as
host/serviceto bypass a local TNS alias while diagnosing. - Confirm that the listener is running and advertises the requested service name.
Make these environment changes before restarting the web process. A setting visible in your interactive terminal may not be visible to a Windows service account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I fix ORA-12705 and other character-set or globalization errors?
ORA-12705 commonly indicates an Oracle globalization environment mismatch. Review variables such as NLS_LANG, confirm that their values are valid for the client and database environment, and set them before Apache, IIS, or PHP-FPM starts. Avoid setting them with putenv() inside the PHP script because Oracle may already have initialized its libraries.
After changing the variable, restart the service and repeat the same connection test. If the extension loads but only particular characters or sessions fail, compare the web process environment with the command-line environment rather than reinstalling the DLL immediately.

Which installation route is best for my Windows or Unix setup?
The right route depends on whether you have a standard PHP package, a controlled build process, or an existing Oracle installation.
| Route | Best for | Main dependency | Operational checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| PECL precompiled DLL | An existing Windows PHP installation | A DLL matching the PHP version/build and Oracle client | Check php.ini, extension_dir, PATH, and one enabled OCI8 DLL. |
DLL in PHP’s ext directory |
PHP distributions that already ship OCI8 binaries | The correct bundled DLL and Oracle client runtime | Enable the matching php_oci8*.dll and avoid duplicate lines. |
| Source build with Instant Client SDK | Custom Linux/Unix or tightly controlled builds | Instant Client Basic or Basic Light plus the SDK | Build against the same or a newer Oracle client major version and expose its runtime at startup. |
| Full Oracle Client or Database libraries | Hosts already running Oracle software | Correct ORACLE_HOME and service-account access |
Avoid mixing client versions and set the startup environment before the service launches. |
For a normal Windows PHP host, the first two routes are simpler than compiling from source. A source build is appropriate only when you control the toolchain and can maintain the matching SDK and runtime libraries.
What should I check before declaring the repair complete?
php -vand web-serverphpinfo()report the PHP installation you intended to repair.- The selected OCI8 package matches that PHP version, architecture, and Oracle client generation.
- The DLL resides in the active
extension_dir, and exactly one matching extension line is enabled. - The intended Instant Client directory appears early enough in the system
PATHand is visible to the service account. - Apache, IIS, PHP-FPM, or the relevant service has been restarted after environment changes.
php -mandphpinfo()show OCI8 without startup warnings.- The web-server error log is clean during startup.
- A test
oci_connect()call succeeds with a valid host, service, username, and password.
If the extension still fails after these checks, collect the exact PHP version, architecture, loaded php.ini, extension filename, Oracle client version, full startup error, and service account details. That information distinguishes a binary mismatch from an Oracle network or naming problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can OCI8 connect to Oracle if the database server is on another machine?
Yes. PHP only needs the compatible Oracle client runtime on the application host; the database server software does not have to be installed there. Network reachability, listener configuration, and a valid service name still determine whether the connection succeeds.
Why does OCI8 work in Command Prompt but not in a browser?
The web server may load a different PHP binary or php.ini, or its Windows service account may not receive your user-level PATH. Compare CLI output with browser-facing phpinfo() and restart the service after changing system variables.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I install Oracle Instant Client Basic or Basic Light?
Either can provide the runtime OCI8 needs when its version and architecture match PHP. Basic Light is a smaller option with a narrower globalization footprint, so applications requiring broader character-set support may need the full Basic package.
Is it safe to leave phpinfo() enabled on a production site?
No. A phpinfo page exposes paths, versions, environment variables, and loaded modules that can help an attacker profile the server. Use it temporarily for diagnosis, restrict access, and remove or disable it after verification.
