PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR is the Windows 10 blue-screen stop code 0x000000CA. It means the Plug and Play Manager encountered a severe device-enumeration or driver problem. The quickest safe approach is to undo any hardware change made just before the crashes, start Windows in Safe Mode if necessary, and use Device Manager to update, roll back, disable, or reinstall the device driver involved. If Windows still starts, install pending Windows and manufacturer driver updates. If it cannot start, work from Windows Recovery and reserve System Restore or Windows 10 installation media for failures that survive driver repair.

What does PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR (0x000000CA) mean?

PNP stands for Plug and Play, the part of Windows that detects hardware, assigns resources, and loads the drivers needed to use it. Microsoft defines this stop code as The PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR bug check has a value of 0x000000CA. The failure is raised when Plug and Play Manager encounters a condition it cannot safely recover from, usually involving a device driver or the process of enumerating a device.

The four bug-check parameters describe programmer-level conditions such as duplicate physical device objects, invalid device objects or identifiers, an object being deleted while Windows is enumerating devices, a null bus-relations pointer, or incorrect Plug and Play notification callbacks. Those values are useful when a developer analyzes a crash dump; they do not tell a typical Windows 10 user which menu to click. Start with the stop-code workflow below.

A recent change is the most useful clue. The crash may begin after you plug in a USB device, install an expansion card, connect a dock or storage device, receive a Windows update, or install a driver. Record what changed and when before making several repairs at once.

What should I do first when Windows shows the 0xCA blue screen?

Work from the least destructive change to the most invasive one. The first steps preserve your files and make it easier to identify the trigger.

  1. Undo the latest physical change. Shut down the PC. Disconnect a newly added USB device, dock, external drive, expansion card, or other hardware that appeared immediately before the blue screens. Leave essential keyboard, mouse, display, and power connections in place.
  2. Restart with the suspect device removed. If Windows now starts normally, do not reconnect everything at once. Use the computer long enough to confirm stability, then reconnect one device at a time and restart between additions.
  3. Note the timing of software changes. Write down whether the first crash followed Windows Update, a driver installation, or a utility supplied with the hardware. That determines whether rollback is more appropriate than an update.
  4. Move to Safe Mode if normal startup loops. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers so that you can inspect and change the problematic device without repeatedly triggering the full startup stack.

Do not repeatedly force power-off while Windows is writing data. If the machine is in a crash-restart loop, use Windows Recovery rather than continuing normal boots.

How do I enter Safe Mode on Windows 10?

Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a repair by itself. Use it to reach Device Manager and remove or change the driver that causes the normal boot to fail.

When Windows still reaches the desktop

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. After the blue recovery screen appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. At the numbered Startup Settings list, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Choose 5 or F5 only when you need networking to obtain a driver.

When Windows never reaches the desktop

Allow Windows to enter its recovery environment after failed starts, or boot from Windows 10 installation media and choose Repair your computer. Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and restart into Safe Mode. If BitLocker is enabled, Windows may ask for the recovery key before allowing some recovery operations.

In Safe Mode, the screen may look different and network access may be unavailable. That is expected. Use the session to inspect devices, remove a recently installed driver, or roll back a driver update; then restart normally to test the result.

How do I use Device Manager to repair the offending driver?

Device Manager is the primary repair path for this stop code. It can identify a device with a warning icon and lets you update, roll back, disable, or uninstall its driver.

Find the device and read its driver details

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories related to the hardware that changed, such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Display adapters, Network adapters, Disk drives, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
  3. Look for a yellow exclamation point. Double-click the device, read the status message on the General tab, and open the Driver tab to record the provider, date, and version.

A warning icon is strong evidence, but its absence does not prove that every driver is healthy. A device that vanishes during a crash can leave no visible warning after reboot, so compare the list with the hardware you recently added and inspect the driver dates.

Choose the least destructive driver action

  • Update driver: Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers first. This asks Windows to use an available compatible package.
  • Roll Back Driver: If the blue screen began immediately after a driver update and the button is available, use Roll Back Driver. Select a reason, confirm, and restart. Rollback is preferable to removing a working device when the previous package is known to have been stable.
  • Disable device: Use Disable device when you need to test whether one peripheral is responsible but want to keep its driver installed. Do not disable hardware required for display, storage, keyboard input, or startup unless you have another recovery route.
  • Uninstall device: Select Uninstall device, confirm, and restart. Windows will attempt to detect the hardware and reinstall an appropriate driver after reboot. This is useful when the installed package is corrupted, but it can temporarily remove network, audio, or display functionality.

After each action, restart and test before changing another device. If the problem returns, use the recorded driver version and the exact PC or device model when looking for a replacement.

Where should I get a replacement Windows 10 driver?

Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support site. Microsoft specifically advises against downloading drivers from unrelated driver-download websites.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install pending updates.
  3. Restart even if Windows does not immediately request it, then check whether the stop code returns.

Install an OEM package manually

When Windows Update does not supply a fix, visit the support page for the computer or component manufacturer. Match the package to the exact model, Windows 10 edition, and system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit). Do not substitute a package for a similar model or a different Windows release. Create a restore point or keep the previous package available before installing a major chipset, storage, graphics, or network driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some installers include firmware or a device-management utility in addition to the driver. Read the installer choices and release notes; install only what is required for the identified device. If the package causes another crash, return to Safe Mode and use Roll Back Driver or Uninstall device.

Can PnPUtil identify or remove the problem device?

Yes, but use PnPUtil only after you have a likely device to target. It is an elevated command-line tool, and disabling or removing the wrong device can break essential functionality.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. In Safe Mode, the same elevation requirement applies.

List devices and drivers

pnputil /enum-devices /problem
pnputil /enum-devices /drivers

The first command lists devices Windows currently reports as having problems. The second shows installed driver packages associated with enumerated devices. Record the device name, problem code, and instance ID before making a change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rescan for hardware

pnputil /scan-devices

Use a scan after reconnecting hardware or after uninstalling a device. A successful scan may make Windows rediscover the hardware and load a compatible package.

Version and safety limits

Windows 10 supports PnPUtil device enumeration beginning with version 1903. Scan, disable, restart, and remove operations are supported beginning with version 2004. On earlier Windows 10 releases, a command may be unavailable even though Device Manager works.

Commands such as /remove-device and /disable-device can affect critical functionality. Target only the confirmed problem device, keep its instance ID, and have a recovery path ready. If you need to make a major change, export or otherwise preserve the driver package first so that you can restore it if the replacement fails.

Which repair should I choose for my situation?

The table below puts the common options on the same decision axes: boot ability, likely trigger, reversibility, data risk, administrator access, and scope.

When should I use System Restore?

Use System Restore after disconnecting recent hardware and trying the relevant Device Manager driver action, especially when the crash clearly follows a driver installation and a restore point predates it.

  1. Open Windows Recovery from Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, or start from installation media and choose Repair your computer.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the driver or hardware change, review the affected programs and drivers, and confirm.
  4. After the restart, test the machine before reinstalling the suspect package.

System Restore requires an existing restore point and may ask for an administrator account. It changes system files, drivers, and settings; it is not a substitute for backing up personal files.

How do I reinstall Windows 10 if the PC will not boot?

Use Microsoft’s Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to make installation media when driver repair and recovery options do not restore a usable system. This is the last-resort path because a clean installation can remove applications and data.

Create the USB media

  1. Use a working PC to obtain Microsoft’s Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
  2. Insert a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB, then choose the option to create installation media.
  3. Back up anything on the USB first. Microsoft warns that creating the media deletes its existing contents.
  4. Select the language, Windows edition, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture that match the license and target PC.

Use the media for repair or installation

Boot the affected PC from the USB, select the appropriate language and keyboard options, then choose Repair your computer when you want to access recovery tools. If recovery cannot repair the installation, start Windows Setup and choose the reinstall option appropriate to your backup and license situation. A clean installation removes the existing Windows environment, so copy personal files from recovery tools or another computer before proceeding.

Keep the USB after the repair. It provides a repeatable route into Windows Recovery if a future driver change makes normal startup impossible.

What if the blue screen returns after the repair?

A recurring 0xCA after the suspect device is removed or its driver is rolled back usually means the change was incomplete, another device is involved, or Windows is reinstalling the same incompatible package.

  • Install only compatible packages from Windows Update or the exact manufacturer’s support page.
  • If the stop code persists without the new hardware and after a rollback, use System Restore or recovery media rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same driver.

If a clean installation also crashes before additional drivers are installed, document the hardware configuration and the exact stop code for the PC or component manufacturer’s support process. The 0xCA value identifies the Plug and Play failure class, not a single replaceable part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 0xCA stop code permanently damage my hardware?

The stop code is a Windows software failure report; it does not by itself establish physical damage. If the machine becomes stable after removing a device or changing its driver, the evidence points to compatibility or enumeration rather than a damaged component. Repeated electrical disconnects should still be avoided while the PC is powered on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Device Manager show no warning icon even though the blue screen continues?

A device can disappear during the failed enumeration and look normal after the next boot. In Device Manager, open View > Show hidden devices, compare greyed entries with the hardware you recently changed, and inspect driver dates instead of relying only on the yellow icon.

Will System Restore delete my personal documents?

System Restore is designed to replace system files, drivers, and configuration with an earlier snapshot, not to serve as a document backup. Still, copy important files before recovery work because a separate reinstall or disk failure can require a different recovery method.

Do I need a 64-bit Windows 10 installer for every modern PC?

No. The installation media must match the target system’s architecture and licensed edition. Check the existing Windows installation or the PC documentation before creating media; using the wrong architecture can prevent setup or require a clean installation.
