If the crash continues, test compatibility or graphics settings one at a time and report the build, branch, mods, symptoms, and logs to the game’s support team.
Start with the safest checks
Update SteamOS and restart
Install any available Steam Deck system updates, then restart the device. These are general Steam Deck stability steps for both LCD and OLED models, not a confirmed fix for a specific Project Zomboid bug. Valve’s Steam Deck software guide covers system updates and troubleshooting.

Temporarily disable third-party apps
If you installed apps through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily and try the game again before changing other settings. This helps you determine whether an app running alongside the game is involved. Valve recommends this as a general troubleshooting check in its software guide and basic Steam Deck troubleshooting guide.
Verify Project Zomboid’s files
- Open your Steam Library and select Project Zomboid.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the check; it may take several minutes. Then launch the game and see whether the crash still occurs.
Steam recommends file verification when game content may be missing or a game crashes. One or more local configuration files may fail verification normally, so that result alone does not necessarily indicate a problem. See Steam’s file verification instructions.

Test compatibility and graphics settings carefully
Valve suggests checking a game’s Steam Deck Verified information and, for a Steam app, trying a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. To test a compatibility option, open Library > Project Zomboid > Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select a Proton version. Valve’s guide suggests trying the latest Proton version. This is a general troubleshooting option, not a confirmed Project Zomboid-specific fix.
You can also lower the game’s graphics settings to reduce system load. Change only one setting at a time, then test the same activity that previously caused the crash. Note whether the crash happens on launch or during play, when it occurs, and whether the change affects it. That makes it easier to identify a useful pattern instead of changing several variables at once. Valve outlines these general checks in its Steam Deck software guide.

Check your game build and branch before changing branches
Record which Project Zomboid build and Steam branch you are using. The Indie Stone announced Build 42.21 for the Unstable Steam branch in September 2026. Its notes include a crash fix for a particular multiplayer vehicle-sharing circumstance, but do not establish a general Steam Deck crash or show that this fix applies to an unspecified crash. Do not switch to Unstable as a general remedy.
If you choose to test an Unstable update with an existing save, manually back up that save first, as the Build 42.21 release notes recommend. Keep track of the branch and build used for each test.

Prepare a useful support report
If the crash persists, send the developers enough detail to distinguish a launch failure from a crash during play or a problem tied to a particular configuration. The Indie Stone’s technical support page requests exact issue details, technical specifications, relevant crash reports saved as logs.zip, and information about mods. It also directs players to the official Support Forum and the game’s Tech Support channel on Discord.

- Describe exactly what happens, including whether the game fails to launch, closes during play, or becomes unresponsive.
- Include when and how often it occurs, and what you were doing immediately beforehand.
- List your Steam Deck and software details, including the SteamOS version, game build and branch, and compatibility settings you tried.
- Say whether you use mods and whether the issue occurs with them disabled.
- Attach the relevant
logs.zipcrash report if available. - Summarize the checks you performed and what changed after each one.
