If your PS4 shows error SU-30746-0 and the controller will not respond, the code means the system software update failed—not that the controller is necessarily broken. First connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button. Then restart the PS4, retry the update, and if it keeps failing, use PlayStation’s official USB update method.
What SU-30746-0 means
PlayStation Support describes the message as: “The system software update has failed.” The error identifies an update problem; it does not establish why your controller is unresponsive or prove that the controller is faulty. Connect the controller so you can use Safe Mode
For Safe Mode, PlayStation’s instructions call for a USB connection and the PS button; wireless pairing alone is not the published procedure. Use a USB cable that can connect the controller to the console. If the cable is damaged or only charges, a working USB data cable is a reasonable thing to try, but it is not a guaranteed fix for the update error.

- Turn off the PS4 by holding its power button for about three seconds.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
These are PlayStation’s Safe Mode startup instructions. If the controller is not paired with this console, connect it while the console is on and press PS to pair it. Retry the PS4 update and remove its failed download
Once you can navigate the menus, follow PlayStation’s recommended online recovery sequence:
- Restart the PS4 and try the update again. Use a wired internet connection if possible.
- From the function area, open Notifications. Highlight the update file, press OPTIONS, and delete it.
- Go to Settings > System Software Update and try the update again.

Install the update from a USB drive
If repeated online downloads fail, use a PC or Mac with an internet connection and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Prepare the drive with the exact folder and file names below; use uppercase letters for the folder and filename.

- Create a folder named
PS4on the USB drive. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Download the PS4 update file from PlayStation’s PS4 system software page and save it inside
UPDATEasPS4UPDATE.PUP. The resulting path should bePS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP. - Connect the drive to the PS4 and start Safe Mode using the power-button steps above.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the console does not recognize the update file, check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT and that the folders and filename match exactly. PlayStation’s USB update instructions also explain that reinstalling system software returns the console to its original state. Back up data first if possible, and do not confuse a full reinstall with the ordinary update retry: reinstalling is not the first step for SU-30746-0.

Protect your data before choosing other Safe Mode options
Some Safe Mode choices are destructive. PlayStation says Restore Default Settings does not delete stored games, apps, captures, or saved data. By contrast, Initialize PS4 deletes user data, and Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes PS4 firmware. If pairing still fails after connecting by USB and pressing PS, reset the DUALSHOCK 4 using PlayStation’s controller instructions. If it still will not connect after the reset, PlayStation directs users to its repair service. The available troubleshooting guidance does not identify a specific fault in your controller, cable, USB port, or console, so avoid treating any one part as definitively broken without diagnosis.
