Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake crashes or will not start on PC, check system requirements first, then verify the Steam installation and work through security software, GPU selection, drivers, and symptom-specific fixes. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helps.
1. Check whether your PC meets the requirements
Steam lists these minimum requirements for the 2019 PC version of Resident Evil 2. They are platform-listed specifications, not a guarantee that every configuration will work.

Steam says the minimum configuration is expected to run at 1080p and 30 FPS, subject to graphics-memory limits and settings. Compare your hardware and free storage with the Steam requirements listing. Capcom warns that a system below minimum can run poorly or fail to launch. If you meet minimum but not recommended specifications, lower graphics settings and restart the game if the changes do not take effect immediately.
If you are playing on a laptop
Make sure the game is assigned to the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics. Capcom notes that some integrated laptop GPUs are untested or unsupported. It also warns that SLI or CrossFire multi-GPU configurations can cause compatibility problems, so test with the normal single-GPU configuration if applicable.
#1 Best Overall
- Expand the nightmare with two thrilling expansions, combining Survival Horror and Malformations of G B-Files into one immersive bundle.
- Introduces fearsome new bosses including Birkin Stage One and the monstrous Birkin Stage Five mutation, filling entire tiles with danger.
- Play as new survivors with advanced versions of Leon and Claire plus five additional characters, each bringing unique abilities to the fight.
- Adds new weapons, enemies, Hard Mode challenge, and an intense player versus player game mode for ultimate replayability.
- Includes highly detailed miniatures, scenario booklets, cards, and all components needed to escalate tension and terror on the tabletop.
2. Restart and verify the Steam game files
- Exit Resident Evil 2 and Steam, then restart the PC.
- Open Steam Library, right-click Resident Evil 2, and choose Properties.
- Open the installed or local files section and choose the option to verify the integrity of the game files. Steam’s wording and tab names can vary by client version.
- Wait for Steam to finish checking and reacquiring any missing or damaged files, then try launching the game.
Capcom notes that verification may report one or more files that could not be validated because they are local configuration files. That result can be normal; those files may be ignored rather than replaced. See Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 Steam troubleshooting guide.
3. Check whether security software is blocking the game
Capcom says antivirus software can sometimes block the game executable because of a false positive. If the game does not start, check your security software’s quarantine and block history. If you find a block, follow the vendor’s directions to add a narrowly scoped exception for the official game files and relevant Steam files or locations. Capcom’s guide names the game folder or executable, the Steam executable, and Steam AppData as locations to check.

- As consciousness returns and you blink shadows from your eyes, all you can hear is the ringing in your ears. At first, you think it might be from the bells, as you recall racing through the Clock Tower in search of gears to sound the great bell.
- Then the blood drains from your face as the memories begin to surface. You thought you’d escaped Raccoon City. But it isn’t over yet.
- Continue your desperate escape with 11 hours of new gameplay, nine gripping new scenarios, three terrifying new enemy types, and two large-and-lethal bosses.
- This expansion will drastically change the course of your Resident Evil 3: The Board Game campaign, taking you beyond the built-up city streets to brand new locations plagued by new enemies.
- But new enemies aren’t your only threat. To move forward, you must adapt to new gameplay mechanics introduced by the changed environment. Creep silently through the City Hospital. Wade through flood water in the City Park.
Do not leave antivirus disabled as a permanent workaround. If you cannot confirm that a file belongs to the game or Steam installation, do not whitelist it; investigate with your security vendor instead.
4. Update Windows and your graphics driver
- Install available Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- Install the current graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, as appropriate for your GPU.
- Restart again after installing the driver, then test the game before changing other graphics settings.
Capcom identifies outdated graphics drivers as a possible source of graphics problems or startup failures, and its general Steam guidance recommends keeping DirectX updated. These are general checks, not proof that a particular driver caused your crash. Also check GPU assignment and power settings if you are on a laptop.

5. Choose fixes that match the symptom
The game fails during a cutscene or video playback
Capcom says some video segments use the Windows default Media Player codec. On Windows N or KN editions, which may not include Windows Media Player or its codecs by default, install Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack for your Windows edition. Separately installed codec packs can cause compatibility issues, so avoid adding them unless you have a specific need.
The screen is blank, flickers, or shows graphical corruption
- Return display and graphics settings to stable or lower values, especially if the problem began after a settings change. Restart the game when needed for settings to apply.
- If the issue suggests a damaged shader cache, close the game and delete the game-generated
shader.cacheorshader.cache2in the installation folder, if present. The game can regenerate its cache. - Check that the game is using the intended GPU and that display settings are appropriate for your monitor.
Capcom recommends checking display settings for blank-screen or flicker problems and identifies deleting the generated shader cache as a troubleshooting option for relevant graphics issues.

The game runs poorly or crashes intermittently
- Close resource-heavy background programs while testing, including recording software and performance overlays.
- Check that the PC has clear airflow and is not obstructed. Capcom suggests lowering graphics settings or limiting the frame rate to reduce heat.
- If the game is unstable on a laptop, review its power settings and confirm it is using the dedicated GPU.
These checks can help isolate performance or stability problems, but they are not guaranteed fixes for every crash.

6. Contact Capcom with useful diagnostics
If the game still crashes or will not load, send Capcom support enough detail to distinguish a repeatable game issue from a system-specific failure. Include:
- CPU and GPU models, GPU VRAM, installed RAM, Windows version, and graphics-driver version.
- Your security software and display or monitor models.
- The game configuration file and a DxDiag report.
- Exactly when and where the failure happens, what you were doing, whether restarting changes the result, and precise reproduction steps if the crash is repeatable.
- Screenshots or video when they show the problem, plus CrashReport ZIP files if available.
Capcom’s RE2 guide and its general Steam troubleshooting guide describe the information to collect when escalating a persistent problem.
