If your PS5 headset has no sound, a silent microphone, echo, or wireless dropouts, start by checking the console’s selected audio devices and mute controls. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the intended Output Device; then open the PS button’s Mic controls, choose the right Input Device, and run Adjust Microphone Level. Work through the symptom-specific checks below before resetting or replacing the headset.

What should I check first when my PS5 headset is not working?

Start with the simple causes that can affect sound or voice independently: a mute control, a wrong selected device, or a headphone level set too low. The PS5 treats the audio output and microphone input as separate choices, so hearing game audio does not prove the headset microphone is selected, and a working mic does not prove game audio is routed to the headset.

  1. Check mute controls. Inspect the controller’s mute button and the headset’s own mute control. On the PULSE 3D Wireless Headset, the mute indicator glows orange when mute is active.
  2. Select the output device. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and choose the headset you intend to use.
  3. Check headphone routing and level. Confirm Output to Headphones is set as intended. Adjust the headphone volume under Settings > Sound > Volume or from the PS button control center.
  4. Select and test the microphone. Press the PS button, open Mic, select the correct Input Device, and choose Adjust Microphone Level. Speak normally and move the level until your voice falls in Sony’s Good range.

Available audio settings can vary by device, and Sony cautions that not every device works with the console. If the headset is not listed or a control described here is absent, check the headset manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information rather than assuming every connection type is supported.

Why can’t I hear game audio through my PS5 headset?

Usually, the console is sending audio to a different device, headphone output is configured unexpectedly, or the headset volume is too low. Check the PS5’s output selection and headphone routing before troubleshooting the microphone.

Choose the headset as the output device

Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and select the intended headset. Then inspect Output to Headphones. The setting should match what you want to hear through the headset; do not assume it is correct just because the headset appears connected.

Raise the headphone volume

Use Settings > Sound > Volume or the control center to adjust headphone volume. If your headset has its own volume control, check that too. A low headset-side level can make the console appear to be routing audio correctly while the sound remains difficult or impossible to hear.

Separate a routing issue from a headset fault

If the headset is selected, routing is set as intended, and the volume is raised but audio is still absent, reconnect its cable or wireless adapter as applicable and check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. A damaged headset cannot necessarily be repaired by changing a console setting.

Why is my PS5 microphone not working?

Check the controller and headset mute controls first, then confirm the PS5 is using the headset microphone as its input device. Use the console’s microphone-level screen to see whether normal speech is being picked up.

Check both mute controls

A headset may have its own mute button in addition to the controller’s mute button. Make sure neither is active. On the PULSE 3D, orange indicates that its mute function is on.

Select and calibrate the input

Press the PS button, open Mic, and choose the headset under Input Device. Open Adjust Microphone Level and speak at your usual volume. Move the level until the meter reaches Sony’s Good range; the goal is a suitable level for your normal voice, not simply the highest possible setting.

Check party chat after the microphone test

If the level screen responds to your voice but party members cannot hear you, check the active party or game-chat controls in Game Base, including the selected chat context and the chat/game balance. Sony’s voice-chat guidance also points users to output-device selection and microphone-level checks as initial settings to verify.

How do I fix PS5 headset echo?

In Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level, move the microphone-level fader two to four notches to the left. Sony recommends this adjustment for echo; if the problem persists, reset the headset.

PULSE Elite Wireless Headset - For PS5, PC & MAC
  • PULSE Elite wireless headset comes with PlayStation Link USB adapter, PULSE Elite charging hanger, Carrying case, Mounting plate, USB cable and Printed materials
  • PlayStation Link wireless connection for PlayStation 5 consoles, PlayStation Portal remote player and PC / Mac
  • Bluetooth 5.0 and 3.5mm audio jack for Mobile devices
  • USB Type-C port for charging

Make the adjustment in small steps

  1. Open Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level.
  2. Move the fader two to four notches left of its current position.
  3. Speak with the headset in its normal position and check whether other players still hear echo.
  4. If echo remains, reset the headset using the reset procedure for that model.

Do not confuse microphone level with headphone volume: the former affects the microphone input level, while the latter affects what you hear. The reset Sony recommends here is a headset reset, not a reason to change unrelated PS5 settings.

Why do I hear game audio but not chat, or chat but not game audio?

Game audio and voice chat can be balanced separately on headsets that support it. Check the PS5’s Output to Headphones setting and, if your headset provides chat/game controls, adjust that balance.

Check the console’s headphone output

Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and verify Output to Headphones is configured as intended. Then open Game Base and check the active party or game-chat balance. If the console setting is correct but one audio type remains too quiet, the headset’s own balance control may be the cause.

Adjust headset chat/game balance where supported

The PULSE 3D has separate CHAT and GAME buttons for changing the relative volume of voice chat and game audio. Pressing both buttons together resets that balance. Other headsets may use different controls or may not offer a separate balance function; available settings and controls depend on the device.

How do I stop a PS5 wireless headset from cutting out?

For skipping or disconnections on a wireless headset that uses a USB adapter, reseat the adapter, power-cycle the headset, and reduce nearby wireless and USB 3.0 interference. If necessary, use a USB extension cable to create more distance between the adapter and nearby devices.

  1. Reconnect the adapter firmly. Remove the USB wireless adapter and plug it back in securely.
  2. Turn the headset off and on. A power cycle can restore its connection.
  3. Remove unused wireless adapters. Unneeded adapters near the console can contribute to wireless interference.
  4. Move USB 3.0 devices away. Sony advises removing USB 3.0 devices when troubleshooting wireless sound problems.
  5. Add separation if needed. When more than one wireless headset or USB 3.0 device is present, Sony advises using a USB extension cable to increase the distance between the wireless adapter and those devices.

This sequence applies to wireless connection symptoms such as sound skipping or disconnection. It does not establish that every dropout has the same cause; if the problem remains after reducing interference, reset the headset and consult its manufacturer’s connection guidance.

When should I reset or replace the headset?

Reset the headset if echo, pairing, or connection problems persist after the relevant checks. Consider a replacement only after confirming that the current headset is selected correctly and that the model is compatible with PS5.

Reset after basic checks

Use the reset procedure for the specific headset model when the microphone, pairing, or wireless connection still fails after the checks above. Reset instructions differ by headset, so use its manual rather than guessing at a button combination. A headset reset is distinct from resetting the PS5.

Compare connection and control needs before replacing

There is no single headset feature that resolves every audio problem. Compare the connection method, microphone controls, chat/game balance, PS5 compatibility, and how the wireless adapter behaves around USB 3.0 devices.

What to compare USB wireless-adapter headset Wired controller-connected headset
Connection Uses a USB wireless adapter; the PULSE 3D manual documents this connection on PS5. Connects to the controller by wire.
Microphone controls Controls depend on the headset. The PULSE 3D manual documents mute and mic monitoring. Controls depend on the headset; no universal control set is established.
Chat/game balance Available on supported headsets. The PULSE 3D has CHAT and GAME buttons and a combined-button balance reset. Whether separate balance controls are available is not established; check the model’s documentation.
PS5 compatibility Must be confirmed for the specific headset. Sony says not all devices work with the console. Must be confirmed for the specific headset. Sony says not all devices work with the console.
USB 3.0 interference consideration Sony advises increasing distance between the wireless adapter and USB 3.0 devices when troubleshooting interference. The cited Sony guidance concerns wireless adapters; it does not establish a corresponding USB 3.0 interference fix for a wired headset.

The PULSE 3D Wireless Headset is one Sony-documented option for PS5, with USB-adapter operation and documented mute, mic-monitoring, and chat/game-balance controls. Its features do not guarantee that replacing another headset will fix a console setting problem or physical damage.

What if the headset still does not work?

Use the symptom to narrow the remaining issue: output selection and headphone routing for missing sound, input selection and mic level for a silent microphone, microphone fader adjustment for echo, and adapter distance or reconnection for wireless dropouts. If those checks and a headset reset do not resolve the problem, verify compatibility and model-specific troubleshooting with the headset manufacturer; do not assume that a settings change can repair physical damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect any Bluetooth headset to a PS5?

No universal Bluetooth-headset support is established here. Sony says not all devices work with the console, so check the specific headset’s PS5 compatibility with its manufacturer before relying on it.

Does resetting the headset reset my PS5 too?

The troubleshooting step for persistent echo, pairing, or connection symptoms is to reset the headset itself. Follow that headset model’s manual; the cited guidance does not call for resetting the console.

Will a USB extension cable fix every wireless headset dropout?

No. Sony recommends added distance between a wireless adapter and nearby USB 3.0 devices or another wireless headset when interference is a concern, but the guidance does not promise that an extension will resolve dropouts caused by other problems.

What does mic monitoring do on the PULSE 3D?

Sony’s PULSE 3D manual documents mic monitoring as a headset feature. The available information does not specify a universal control path for other headset models, so consult the model’s manual for its controls.
