How to Fix PS5 Headset Audio, Microphone, and Chat Problems

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Most PS5 headset failures come from one of three settings: the console is sending sound to the wrong output device, the microphone input is muted or misadjusted, or game and chat volume are unbalanced. Work through the PS5 menus first, then check the headset’s physical controls and compatibility before assuming the hardware has failed.

This guide follows a complete troubleshooting path for missing game audio, missing party voices, a muted or quiet microphone, and situations where game and chat audio do not play together. Menu names are the labels used in the PS5 system software; some options vary by headset and connection type.

Start with the symptom

Identify which signal is missing before changing several settings at once. That prevents a working input or output from being replaced accidentally.

If a single change fixes the symptom, leave the other settings alone. If the symptom remains after the complete settings sequence, move to hardware isolation rather than repeatedly changing the same control.

1. Select the correct PS5 output device

The selected Output Device determines where the PS5 sends game and chat audio. A console can remain set to a television, controller speaker, USB headset, or another connected device after you plug in a headset, so selecting the hardware explicitly is the fastest first repair.

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Choose Sound, then Audio Output.
  3. Open Output Device and choose the headset or other device you intend to use.
  4. If you want the console to change devices whenever an audio product is connected, enable Switch Output Device Automatically.

Automatic switching is convenient, but it can also make a troubleshooting session confusing when several audio devices are connected. For a controlled test, select the intended headset manually, then remove or disconnect competing devices.

Set the headphone destination and volume

Still in the sound settings, verify Output to Headphones. This setting controls whether audio is sent to the connected headphones rather than remaining on another output. Then open Settings > Sound > Volume and adjust the volume control for headphones or controller speakers, depending on the device you selected.

Raise the level gradually while a game or system sound is active. If the volume control is unavailable or behaves differently from these instructions, Sony notes that available settings vary by device. That variation is normal; it does not by itself prove that the headset is defective.

Confirm compatibility before deeper testing

Sony cautions that not all devices work with the PS5 and advises checking compatibility and use information with the device manufacturer. A headset can light up or charge and still lack a supported audio path. Record the connection method you are using—such as the controller, USB, or a compatible wireless adapter—because the correct output option depends on that hardware.

2. Check the microphone input and mute path

Microphone problems are controlled from the PS5 Control Center as well as from the headset itself. A correct output selection does not guarantee that the console is listening to the desired microphone.

  1. Press the PS button on the DualSense controller.
  2. Select Mic in the Control Center.
  3. Open Input Device and choose the microphone you intend to use.
  4. Select Adjust Microphone Level.
  5. Speak at your normal gaming distance and adjust the level until the meter reaches the Good range.

The level should be set while speaking normally, not while shouting into the microphone. A level that is too low can make friends hear nothing; a level set too high can make ordinary speech distort or trigger the input constantly.

Check both mute buttons

Look at the DualSense MUTE button and the headset’s own mute switch, button, or boom position. Sony documents that pressing the DualSense MUTE button can mute both the microphone and speaker output. That means a muted controller can explain a sudden loss of your voice and headset sound at the same time.

Toggle the controller mute once, then check the headset control separately. Do not assume that an unlit headset indicator means the console microphone is active; the controller and headset can have independent mute states.

Use a short voice test

After selecting the input and reaching the Good range, speak a complete sentence and watch the microphone indicator. If the meter does not react, the PS5 is not receiving a signal from that input. Recheck the physical connection and the selected Input Device before adjusting the level again. If the meter reacts but friends still cannot hear you, verify the party’s chat state and the headset’s mute control, then test with another compatible application or device.

3. Restore both game and chat audio

When one type of audio works and the other disappears, the problem is usually routing or balance rather than a completely dead headset. Recheck the Output Device and microphone selection first, then use the headset’s chat/game controls if it has them.

Game audio works but voices are missing

Confirm that the headset is the selected Output Device and that Output to Headphones is enabled. Then inspect any chat/game balance control on the headset. A balance moved fully toward game can make party voices seem absent even though the microphone and connection are fine.

Voices work but game audio is missing

Use the same output checks, then move the balance toward game. Also verify the headphone volume rather than only the television or controller volume. A headset can deliver chat while its game channel is reduced to an inaudible level.

Both signals should be possible

The PULSE 3D manual states, “You can listen to both game audio and chat audio simultaneously.” On that headset, dedicated CHAT/GAME buttons adjust the relative volume of the two signals. Pressing both buttons together resets the balance. Other models use a wheel, slider, software control, or no independent balance at all, so use the control method documented for your model.

Make one balance adjustment at a time and speak with a party member while game audio is playing. This makes it clear whether the change affected chat, game sound, or both.

4. Inspect model-specific headset controls

Physical controls can override what the PS5 menus appear to show. Before declaring a console setting broken, identify every control on the headset: master volume, mute, chat/game balance, sidetone or mic monitoring, and any connection or power switch.

PULSE 3D indicators and monitoring

On the PULSE 3D headset, the mute button displays orange when mute is active. Its mic-monitoring feature lets you hear your own voice, which can help confirm that the microphone is physically picking up sound. Mic monitoring is not a replacement for the PS5’s Input Device and level checks, but it can distinguish a muted or disconnected microphone from a party-chat routing issue.

Controls differ across headsets

Do not transfer the meaning of an indicator or button from one model to another. Some headsets mute when a boom is raised; others use a button that changes color; some place chat balance on a separate control. Consult the model’s manual for the meaning of each light and button, and confirm that the manual explicitly supports PS5 use where possible.

5. Reconfigure PS5 3D audio

3D audio changes localization and tone, but it does not repair a missing physical connection. Use it after output, microphone, mute, and balance checks—especially when sound is present but footsteps, voices, or direction cues seem unnatural.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sound.
  3. Open 3D Audio (Headphones).
  4. Create a personalized profile by listening to the test sounds and completing the measurements, or choose one of Sony’s presets.
  5. Compare the result with stereo if the effect sounds artificial, harsh, or poorly positioned.

A personalized profile reflects the position and environment in which it was measured. Repeat the measurement when your listening position or environment changes significantly. For example, moving from an upright desk position to a reclined couch position can change how the test sounds reach your ears.

Use a familiar game scene or a spoken party conversation for comparison, and change only the 3D-audio setting during that test. If stereo is clearer and the headset otherwise works correctly, stereo may be the more useful setting for that listening environment.

6. Isolate a hardware or compatibility fault

Once the PS5 output, input, mute, balance, and 3D-audio settings are verified, stop cycling through menus and isolate the hardware.

  1. Test the headset on another compatible device. Confirm that its speakers and microphone produce a signal there.
  2. Test a known-compatible PS5 headset on the same console and connection path.
  3. If the replacement works, inspect the original headset, adapter, cable, or connection method.
  4. If neither headset works, return to the PS5 Output Device and Input Device checks and verify compatibility for the connection type.

A PULSE 3D headset is a directly documented replacement candidate for PS5 troubleshooting. Availability, price, and any replacement program terms change over time, so verify those details separately before purchasing. The important diagnostic value is that a known-compatible headset provides a controlled comparison, not that every PS5 user must choose that model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What each test tells you

  • Original headset fails on another compatible device: the headset, its cable, adapter, or microphone hardware is the likely fault.
  • Original headset works elsewhere but not on the PS5: investigate PS5 routing, connection compatibility, or the console-side port and adapter.
  • Known-compatible headset works on the PS5: the original headset or its connection method is the likely cause.
  • Two compatible headsets fail on the same PS5 path: focus on the console setting, port, adapter, or compatibility issue rather than replacing headsets repeatedly.

Decision paths for common PS5 headset failures

There is no sound at all

  1. Manually select the headset in Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device.
  2. Verify Output to Headphones.
  3. Raise the correct headphone or controller-speaker volume under Settings > Sound > Volume.
  4. Release the DualSense MUTE button and the headset mute control.
  5. Test the headset on another compatible device, then test a known-compatible headset on the PS5.

Game audio plays, but party chat does not

  1. Confirm the selected Output Device.
  2. Check the headset’s chat/game balance and move it away from the game-only position.
  3. Verify the party microphone and chat path from the PS button Control Center.
  4. If the headset has independent CHAT/GAME buttons, reset the balance according to its manual.

Party chat plays, but the game is silent

  1. Confirm Output to Headphones and headphone volume.
  2. Move the chat/game control toward game.
  3. Check whether a headset-specific mute or balance state changed accidentally.
  4. Compare the headset with another compatible PS5 model if the game channel remains silent.

Friends cannot hear you

  1. Press the PS button, open Mic, and select the intended Input Device.
  2. Use Adjust Microphone Level and set normal speech in the Good range.
  3. Release the DualSense MUTE button and the headset’s own mute control.
  4. Use mic monitoring, if available, or test the headset on another compatible device.

Your microphone is too quiet

Watch the level meter while speaking at your normal distance. Increase the microphone level until speech reaches Good, but avoid compensating for a muted, disconnected, or incompatible microphone by turning the level to its maximum. If the meter remains weak despite a Good-range adjustment, compare the headset on another device.

Choosing a replacement headset for PS5 troubleshooting

When replacement is justified, compare functions that affect the exact failures described above rather than choosing on appearance alone. Sony’s compatibility warning makes PS5 support the first filter.

Feature to verify Why it matters Question to ask before buying
Verified PS5 compatibility An otherwise functional headset may not provide a supported PS5 audio path. Does the manufacturer document PS5 use for this exact model and connection method?
Wired or wireless connection The connection determines which output device the console can select and which adapter or port is required. What must be connected to the PS5 or controller?
Microphone mute control A visible, model-specific mute state makes it easier to diagnose a silent mic. Does the headset have a dedicated button, boom mute, or indicator?
Mic monitoring Hearing your own voice can reveal whether the microphone is active. Is sidetone or mic monitoring supported, and how is it enabled?
Independent game/chat balance Separate controls can correct a missing voice channel without changing master volume. Can game and chat levels be adjusted independently?
3D-audio behavior The headset should work with the PS5’s 3D Audio (Headphones) profiles or presets without requiring an unsupported mode. Does the manufacturer’s guidance explain PS5 output routing and audio features?
Comfort and fit A stable listening position helps keep a personalized 3D-audio profile consistent. Can you keep the headset in the same position used during profile measurement?

The PlayStation PULSE 3D wireless headset is one documented PS5-compatible example with simultaneous game and chat audio, CHAT/GAME balance buttons, a mute indicator, and mic monitoring. Treat those features as a checklist for comparison, not as a guarantee that any specific headset will suit every listener.

Preventing the problem from returning

  • Leave Switch Output Device Automatically enabled only if automatic routing matches how you connect devices.
  • Before joining a party, glance at the PS button > Mic panel and confirm the intended input device.
  • Keep the headset’s mute and chat/game controls accessible so an accidental change is easy to spot.
  • After moving your seating position or changing the room setup, revisit Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
  • Keep the headset manual available for model-specific indicators and balance controls.

When settings are not the answer

If the PS5 never detects a compatible headset, the microphone meter never responds with the correct input selected, or the same channel fails with multiple known-compatible headsets, the remaining suspects are physical: the headset, cable, adapter, connection port, or console-side compatibility. At that point, record which devices and connection paths passed or failed and use the relevant manufacturer or PlayStation support process. That evidence is more useful than repeating the same volume and mute adjustments.
