How to Increase System Volume in Windows 10 (and Fix Quiet Audio)

Fix quiet Windows 10 audio by selecting the right output, raising master and app levels, disabling enhancements, checking drivers and using powered speakers when software has reached its limit.

To increase system volume in Windows 10, select the speaker icon on the taskbar and move the master slider up. If the sound is still quiet, Windows may be sending audio to a different device, the individual app may have a lower volume, an enhancement may be interfering, or the speakers may have reached their physical limit. Work through the checks below in order.

1. Raise the Windows master volume

The taskbar speaker control changes the endpoint (master) level for the currently selected playback device.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Find the Speakers icon on the right side of the taskbar.
  2. Select it and move the volume slider toward 100.
  3. If the icon is hidden, open the taskbar overflow area and select it there.
  4. Expand the control’s device list and confirm that the device shown is the speakers or headphones you intend to use.

The slider can be high while the wrong output is selected, so treat the device name as part of this check rather than assuming the visible percentage tells the whole story.

2. Select the speakers, headphones, or monitor you actually want

Windows 10 treats each playback route as a separate output. Built-in speakers, an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor, a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, and wired headphones can all appear independently. A monitor selected as the output can make the computer seem silent when its speakers are disabled or its physical volume is low.

Computer Speakers for Desktop PC Laptop Monitor, Upgraded Touch Controls
  • IMPORTANT UPDATE NOTICE -- Based on extensive customer advises, we’ve rolled out two major upgrades to this desktop speaker. First, volume control buttons have been added. Second, we increased the product thickness for a larger sound cavity, bringing moderate improvements in sound quality and volume.
  • HIGH-QUALITY SOUND -- This laptop speaker is equipped with Dual 3W High-Excursion Drivers & Passive Radiator, delivering louder sound, wider dynamic range, enhanced bass and reduced distortion.
  • ONE CABLE FOR BOTH AUDIO & POWER -- No 3.5mm AUX jack needed. Just one USB cable delivers both audio signal and power for the computer speaker to cut down cable clutter.
  • WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY -- This upgraded PC speaker works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS laptops & PCs, compatible with HP, Lenovo, ThinkPad, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Acer, LG and more. Simply install the latest audio driver for smooth audio playback.
  • PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP -- For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.
  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under the output-device area, select the device that should play the sound.
  3. Play a known audio source and watch for activity through that device.
  4. If you switch between devices, return to this page and verify the selection again; connecting a USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, or DisplayPort device can change the available output choices.

Choose the built-in speakers for ordinary laptop playback, the monitor only when its own speakers are intended, and the headset or headphones when you need private listening. The correct selection matters more than repeatedly pushing the master slider to 100.

3. Check mute states and the per-application volume

Windows maintains both an endpoint volume and a separate application volume. This is why music from one program can be audible while a browser, game, or meeting app remains unusually quiet.

Confirm that the endpoint is not muted

Open the taskbar speaker control and make sure the speaker icon does not show a mute state. If a keyboard, headset, monitor, or powered speaker has its own mute button, cancel that mute as well.

Raise only the quiet app

  1. Open the Windows volume mixer from the taskbar speaker controls.
  2. Identify the application that is producing the quiet sound.
  3. Raise that application’s slider, and check that it is not muted.
  4. Leave other application sliders unchanged if their levels are already comfortable.

An application slider that is low can make the master level appear ineffective. Adjusting the app rather than the whole system avoids making every other sound unnecessarily loud.

4. Turn off audio enhancements while testing

Audio enhancements can alter playback and, in some configurations, cause low or missing sound. Disable them temporarily to determine whether an effect is responsible.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select the playback device currently in use.
  3. Open its properties and find the enhancements or effects controls.
  4. Disable all enhancements temporarily.
  5. Play the same audio again and compare the result.

If the volume returns after enhancements are disabled, leave them off or re-enable them one at a time to identify the troublesome effect. A setting that works for built-in speakers may not work for a monitor, USB headset, or Bluetooth device, so test the exact output you use.

5. Run the Windows 10 Audio troubleshooter

After checking the output device, mute state, application level, and enhancements, use Microsoft’s supported automated diagnostic.

  1. Open the Get Help app in Windows 10.
  2. Start the Audio troubleshooter.
  3. Follow its prompts and allow it to inspect the selected playback device and related settings.
  4. When it reports a change, play audio again before making additional adjustments.

The troubleshooter is most useful after the basic checks. Running it while the wrong monitor, headset, or muted endpoint is selected can lead you to fix the wrong path.

  • USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
  • In-line volume control for easy access

  • Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound

6. Check the driver when the device is missing or behaves incorrectly

A malfunctioning audio driver can cause no sound, an output device that disappears, or controls that do not behave as expected. If the built-in checks do not restore audio, install the appropriate driver supplied by your computer or audio-device manufacturer.

  • Use the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact computer or audio hardware.
  • Match the driver to the specific Windows 10 system and device model.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s installation and restart directions.
  • After installation, return to Settings > System > Sound and confirm that the device appears and is selected.

Do not assume that a generic driver is suitable for every sound chip, USB headset, or monitor. If the problem began after connecting a different device, test the original output again to separate a driver issue from a device-specific issue.

7. Inspect the physical audio path

Windows cannot increase sound that never reaches a powered speaker or headphone driver. Once software levels are high, inspect the hardware path.

Wired speakers and headphones

  • Push the plug fully into the intended audio jack.
  • Check the speaker or headset’s inline mute switch and physical volume wheel.
  • For powered speakers, confirm the power switch is on and the power cable is connected.

USB audio devices

  • Confirm the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • Check the device’s own volume and mute controls.
  • Recheck the selected output after reconnecting it, because Windows may expose more than one playback device.

Bluetooth headphones

  • Make sure the headphones are powered on and connected to this computer.
  • Check their physical volume and mute controls.
  • Verify that Windows has selected the Bluetooth device rather than built-in speakers or a monitor.

Monitor audio

  • Confirm the HDMI or DisplayPort connection is secure.
  • Use the monitor’s own menu or buttons to raise its volume and cancel mute.
  • Select the monitor in Windows only if you want its speakers to play the sound.

Why 100 percent can still sound quiet

A 100 reading on the taskbar is not a promise of a particular loudness. It is the Windows endpoint setting for the selected output. The actual result also depends on the application slider, the output route, enhancements, the driver, and the physical capability of the speakers or headphones.

Microsoft Learn documents a Windows audio endpoint default of 0.0 dB and a driver-model endpoint range of −96 dB to +30 dB. Those are control values, not a guaranteed acoustic level in a room. A small laptop speaker, a monitor with weak built-in speakers, or headphones designed for a low-power source may remain quiet even when software controls are at their maximum.

Use this failure-stage checklist to identify where the loss occurs:

When external speakers or headphones are the right fix

If the selected device is correct, the app and master levels are high, enhancements are off, the driver is working, and cables or power are correct, Windows may have no more software gain to add. In that situation, external hardware changes the physical output rather than another Windows setting.

USB computer speakers

Powered USB computer speakers are the strongest fit when you want shared room audio. They provide their own amplification and usually include a physical volume control. Connect them, select them as the Windows output, and set both the Windows level and the speaker’s own control to comfortable values.

Wired or USB headphones

Wired or USB headphones suit private listening and avoid raising the room’s noise level. They still have their own volume or mute controls, so check those after selecting the device in Windows.

These options address a physical output limitation; they do not repair a wrong device selection, a muted application, a faulty driver, or an unplugged cable.

Windows 10 support status and what it means for audio

Microsoft’s current support notice says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. This does not prevent you from changing volume or running the Windows 10 audio troubleshooter, but it is relevant when deciding how long to rely on an older installation and when obtaining device drivers from a manufacturer.
