Restore error 0x8007422 has no single, documented meaning. First copy the complete hexadecimal code and the message shown on the server. The string is often confused with 0x80070422, Microsoft’s documented ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED condition for a Windows Update service that is stopped or not running. Those are different codes, so changing Windows Update services will not automatically fix a genuine 0x8007422 restore failure.
Next identify what you were restoring: an Essentials file or folder, system state, a complete server image, or an update-related component. Each operation uses a different backup catalog, driver, service, boot environment and data-safety procedure. The sections below give the manual checks in the safest order, including commands for system-state recovery and the Windows Setup path for a full-server restore.

It is an ambiguous string rather than a reliable diagnosis. Microsoft-hosted user questions show 0x8007422 in Store, Xbox and update contexts, but those individual reports do not establish one cause for every server. A missing digit, an extra digit or a transcription error can send you down the wrong recovery path.
Before stopping a service, formatting a disk or starting recovery, preserve the evidence from the original screen. Record the exact code (including every zero), the text beside it, the application or wizard that displayed it, the Windows Server 2016 edition and build, the backup date or version, the backup location and the destination volume. If the message came from a remote console, take a screenshot and copy the text locally; do not rely on memory.

Do not delete the only backup, initialize a disk, accept a repartition prompt or reset a server until you have confirmed both the selected backup and the destination. A restore wizard can offer destructive choices even when the underlying problem is simply an unavailable network share or a missing restore driver.
Is 0x8007422 the same as 0x80070422?
No. The digits differ, and the documented Microsoft error applies only to 0x80070422. Treat a typed 0x8007422 that appears in a Windows Update discussion as a possible transcription mix-up, not as proof that the Windows Update service is disabled.

Microsoft describes the documented condition this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” That sentence should not be applied to the similar-looking 0x8007422 string.
What should I check before attempting any restore?
Use this evidence and safety checklist before changing the server:
- Write down the complete dialog, code, component name and any accompanying message.
- Confirm the server is Windows Server 2016 and note its edition, build and whether it is running normally or in a recovery environment.
- Identify the requested scope: selected files or folders, system state, or a complete server image.
- Record the backup date or version identifier, backup medium, network-share path and destination disk or volume.
- Check whether the backup-health dashboard or event log reports a damaged backup database, missing media or an interrupted backup.
- Verify network connectivity to a remote backup and make sure the account used by the recovery process can reach the share.
- Confirm that you have an account in Administrators or Backup Operators before running system-state commands.
- Locate BitLocker recovery information and Windows Server 2016 Setup media before starting a bare-metal operation.
- Keep an alternate backup available. Never make the only copy your test restore.
These details let you match the failure to the correct branch instead of treating every message as a service error.
Which Windows Server 2016 recovery path applies?
Choose the row that matches the operation you actually started. Scope and boot state determine which checks are relevant.

How do I fix an Essentials file or folder restore?
For a Windows Server Essentials restore, Microsoft directs administrators to verify connectivity and the backup source, inspect backup-health alerts, try another backup and check the restore driver and client-backup services. Work through these checks in order.
1. Verify the network and backup location
- Confirm that the server’s network adapter is enabled and that it has an address on the network containing the backup.
- Test access to the exact local disk, USB device or network share that the restore wizard lists. A share that is reachable from a workstation may still be unavailable to the server’s recovery account.
- If the backup is remote, check the name, share permissions and connectivity without changing the backup contents. Reconnect the storage rather than creating a new empty folder with the same name.
- Open the Essentials backup-health or alert view and look for backup-database errors, incomplete jobs or a disconnected destination.
2. Try a different backup version
If the catalog offers more than one restore point, select another known-good backup. A single damaged or incomplete version can fail while an earlier version remains usable. Keep the failed backup intact for later investigation; do not overwrite it with a new backup until you have confirmed that the alternate restore works.
3. Check the Windows Server Solutions Computer Restore Driver
Open Device Manager on the server and locate the Windows Server Solutions Computer Restore Driver. A missing, disabled or warning-marked entry can prevent the restore workflow from reading the backup correctly. Note the exact device status before making changes so you can reverse an unsuccessful installation.
If the driver is missing, Microsoft documents using the supplied BackupDriverInstaller.exe -i installer from an elevated command prompt, then refreshing Device Manager. Use the installer supplied with your Windows Server Essentials installation; do not download a similarly named executable from an unverified site. After the driver appears without an error, restart the restore workflow and select the original backup again.
4. Check both client-backup services
On the server, open the Services console and check that these services are running:
- Windows Server Client Backup Service
- Windows Server Client Computer Backup Provider Service
The provider service may also need to run on the client computer involved in the restore. If a service is stopped, start it and retry the operation. If it stops immediately, record the service error and inspect the related event entries before repeatedly retrying; a service crash can point to a damaged installation or an inaccessible dependency rather than a bad backup.

5. Retry without changing the destination
Once connectivity, alerts, the driver and services are healthy, retry the same file or folder restore to a non-critical test directory if the wizard allows it. A successful test confirms that the catalog can be read before you replace production files. If every backup version fails, stop changing the destination and preserve the logs and backup media for a backup-integrity investigation.
How do I perform Windows Server 2016 system-state recovery?
System-state recovery uses the wbadmin command from an elevated prompt. It restores the system state from a specified backup and location; it is not the same as restoring selected files or a complete disk image.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Confirm rights, version and target
Sign in with an account that is a member of Administrators or Backup Operators. Identify the exact backup version with:
wbadmin get versions
Read the catalog output carefully, including the date, time, backup target and server name. If the backup is on a network share, verify that the recovery environment can reach the share and that the path is available to the account running the command.
2. Run the recovery with the catalog’s values
The command pattern is:
wbadmin start systemstaterecovery -version:<MM/DD/YYYY-HH:MM> -backupTarget:\servershare -machine:<server-name>
Replace every placeholder with the values shown by wbadmin get versions. Do not reuse the example date, share or machine name. If the backup is local, use the actual target syntax reported by the catalog. Review the confirmation text before accepting it.
3. Understand what system-state recovery does not include
System-state recovery does not include registry user hives under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. User-profile data and ordinary files therefore require a separate file or volume restore. Plan for that boundary before assuming that a successful system-state operation returns every user setting.

4. Protect the current state
Document current service configuration and, where possible, capture a fresh backup or export before replacing system state. A recovery can change boot configuration, services, certificates and other server settings. If the command reports that the version or target cannot be found, correct the catalog values and connectivity first rather than selecting an unverified backup.
How do I restore a complete Windows Server 2016 system image?
A full-server or bare-metal restore starts from Windows Server 2016 Setup media and runs in Windows Recovery Environment. Use this branch when the operating system is unbootable or when you need to recover the complete image rather than a selected folder.
1. Prepare compatible media and prerequisites
- Use Windows Server 2016 installation media that matches the server installation and can boot the machine.
- Make the image backup available on its local disk, attached storage or reachable network location.
- Plan for BitLocker: have the recovery key and any required network or storage drivers ready.
- Check the target hardware. Microsoft states that a target for this recovery must have the same number of drives as the backup and drives that are at least as large.
2. Start System Image Recovery
- Boot the server from the Windows Server 2016 Setup media.
- At the Setup screen, choose Repair your computer, not Install now.
- Select Troubleshoot, then System Image Recovery.
- Choose the Windows Server 2016 image and the appropriate backup version.
- Review the destination disks, partitions and advanced options before confirming.
3. Check the destructive choices
The wizard can format or repartition selected disks and can install drivers. Read each disk mapping and make sure the image is going to the intended server and volume. A full recovery can overwrite data that was created after the selected backup, so copy any newer files elsewhere before proceeding. If the image is on a network share and the wizard cannot see it, load the network adapter driver or repair connectivity in WinRE before selecting a different image.
4. Validate after the first boot
After recovery, verify that the server boots from the expected disk, that volumes have their intended drive letters, and that critical services and network adapters start. Check application data separately because the image date determines what was restored. Keep the original backup and recovery notes until the server has passed those checks.

Only use the Windows Update-service branch after the screen clearly shows 0x80070422, not 0x8007422. Open the Services console, find Windows Update, and check whether it is stopped or disabled. If it is disabled, record the existing startup setting, set an appropriate startup mode for your organization’s policy, start the service and retry the update. If the code remains 0x8007422 in a restore wizard, return to the restore-type branches instead of continuing with update changes.
Why can Windows Server restore not find my backup?
“Backup not found” usually points to a visibility, catalog or compatibility problem rather than proving that the backup is erased. Use the symptom to choose the next check.

| Symptom | Checks to perform |
|---|---|
| The network share is absent in the wizard | Verify the network adapter in WinRE or the running server, confirm the share path and permissions, and load the required network driver. |
| The share is visible but no versions appear | Check that the catalog belongs to this server and that the selected backup target contains the original backup structure, not a newly created empty directory. |
| One version fails while others are listed | Try another known-good version and preserve the failed media for investigation. |
| The image is rejected on different hardware | Confirm the target has the same number of drives and at least the same drive sizes; plan storage, network and BitLocker drivers. |
| Essentials restore shows a device or provider error | Check the Windows Server Solutions Computer Restore Driver and both client-backup services on the server; check the provider service on the client when required. |
What are the most common restore mistakes?
- Dropping a zero or adding a digit:
0x8007422and0x80070422lead to different investigations. - Using the wrong scope: system-state recovery cannot substitute for a complete image restore, and a file restore will not rebuild an unbootable operating system.
- Running
wbadminwithout the catalog version: the command needs the actual version and target, not an example timestamp. - Ignoring the restore driver: Essentials may fail before it can read a valid backup if the computer restore driver is missing.
- Assuming a system-state restore includes user hives:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERdata is outside that scope. - Accepting repartitioning without checking disks: full-server recovery can format or repartition selected drives.
- Testing only the backup you intend to overwrite: keep an alternate version and test to a non-critical destination when possible.
How should I decide whether to retry, change backups or stop?
Retry the same operation only after correcting a clearly identified, reversible condition such as a stopped service, disconnected share or missing driver. Change to another backup when the catalog is readable but one version repeatedly fails. Stop before confirmation when the wizard proposes unfamiliar disks, a format or repartition, a different server name or a backup date you cannot verify. At that point, preserve the error text, catalog output and event logs and involve the person responsible for the organization’s backup policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use system-state recovery to restore an individual user profile?
No. System-state recovery excludes registry user hives under HKEY_CURRENT_USER and is not a replacement for a file or profile backup. Restore user files and settings through the appropriate file-level or application-specific method after the server state is stable.
What should I do if my backup is on a USB disk that WinRE cannot see?
Check that the disk is powered and connected directly, then look for storage or chipset drivers in the recovery environment. Do not initialize or format the disk when prompted; doing so can destroy the backup catalog.
Does a bare-metal restore work when the replacement server has fewer drives?
Microsoft’s documented full-server procedure requires the target to have the same number of drives as the backup, with each target drive at least as large. A different layout may require rebuilding the storage arrangement or using a different recovery method instead of forcing the image wizard.
Why does a restore succeed but the server still fail to start an application?
The image or system-state date may predate application files, certificates, database changes or service configuration that the application needs. Verify post-restore service dependencies and application data separately rather than repeating the same image restore.
