There is no single confirmed Xbox fix for every Risk of Rain 2 crash. Start with reversible steps: fully quit the game, remove it from Quick Resume, restart and power-cycle the console, then update the game, its DLC, and Xbox system software. If the crash continues, isolate whether it is caused by DLC, a save, multiplayer, storage, or a game-side bug before deleting any data.

First, identify the crash pattern
Note exactly when the failure occurs:
- Immediately after selecting the game or while loading your profile
- At the title screen, main menu, Logbook, or a particular menu tab
- When starting a run, reaching a certain stage, or using a specific survivor, item, artifact, or DLC feature
- Only after resuming through Quick Resume
- Only in online co-op
- As a freeze, dashboard return, or complete console shutdown
A crash tied to one save, feature, or multiplayer session points toward different troubleshooting than several unrelated games crashing. A full shutdown, overheating warning, or graphical corruption is not an ordinary game crash; stop treating it as only a Risk of Rain 2 problem.
1. Quit the game and remove Quick Resume
- Press the Xbox button.
- Highlight Risk of Rain 2.
- Press the Menu button.
- Select Quit.
- Launch the game normally from the dashboard.
Quick Resume preserves a suspended session. It is not proven to cause every Risk of Rain 2 crash, but starting clean is a useful, low-risk test—especially if the problem began after switching games, waking the console, or resuming an old run.

2. Restart and power-cycle the Xbox
First use the normal restart option. If that does not help, perform a full power cycle:
- Hold the console’s Xbox power button for about 10 seconds, until the console turns off.
- Unplug the power cable.
- Leave it disconnected for at least 30 seconds; two minutes is the more conservative cache-clearing interval described in Xbox Series X|S cache instructions.
- Reconnect the cable, start the console, and launch the game.
This does not uninstall the game or intentionally delete save data. It is different from a factory reset.
3. Update the game, DLC, and console
Open My games & apps → Manage → Updates and install every available Risk of Rain 2 update and add-on update. Dashboard labels can vary by Xbox system update. Then open the console’s system settings and check for an Xbox system update.

4. Clear persistent storage
This is a general Xbox cache-related step, not a confirmed Risk of Rain 2-specific cure:
- Press the Xbox button and open Settings.
- Go to Devices & connections → Blu-ray.
- Select Persistent storage.
- Choose Clear persistent storage, then restart the console.
Clearing persistent storage is separate from deleting the game’s saved data.
5. Test without the DLC
The Xbox listing includes Survivors of the Void, Seekers of the Storm, and Alloyed Collective. If the crash began after installing an add-on or occurs when DLC content appears, test the base game without the suspected package:
- Open My games & apps.
- Highlight Risk of Rain 2 and press Menu.
- Select Manage game and add-ons.
- Uninstall the suspected DLC only.
- Restart the Xbox and test a run that does not require that content.
- Reinstall the add-on if the test is complete.
If the crash disappears, that does not prove the DLC itself is defective. The cause could be a damaged installation, an incompatible saved state, or a bug in content that may already have been patched. 2K recommends reinstalling DLC before reinstalling the complete game.

6. Reinstall the complete game
Use a full reinstall after updating, power-cycling, testing without Quick Resume, and isolating or reinstalling DLC:
- Go to My games & apps and highlight Risk of Rain 2.
- Press Menu and select Uninstall.
- Remove the game and its required add-ons.
- Restart the Xbox.
- Reinstall the game from your library or the Microsoft Store listing.
- Reinstall every owned DLC package.
- Wait for installation and save synchronization to finish before starting a run.
Reinstalling the game is not the same as deleting cloud saves. Read every deletion prompt carefully and do not select a save-removal option casually.
7. Check storage and installation location
Note whether the game is installed on the internal SSD, an official Xbox Storage Expansion Card, or an external USB drive. You do not need to move it automatically: there is no supplied evidence that Risk of Rain 2 must be installed internally.

8. Test for a damaged local save
Test a fresh run first. If only one save crashes, a local-save resynchronization may help:
- Open My games & apps → See all → Games.
- Highlight Risk of Rain 2, press Menu, and select Manage game and add-ons.
- Open Saved data and select the relevant profile.
- Choose the option that removes the save from the console only, not the cloud copy.
- Restart the Xbox.
- Launch the game and allow the cloud save to resync completely.
Menu wording may vary. The Xbox cloud-save procedure is described in this platform-generic Xbox troubleshooting guide; it is not Risk of Rain 2-specific. Cloud synchronization is not a guaranteed backup, so accept the possible loss of unsynchronized progress before proceeding.
9. Refresh the Xbox profile
If the crash occurs while loading your profile, achievements, or cloud data, confirm that you know the Microsoft account credentials. Then remove the Xbox profile from the console, restart it, add the profile again, and allow synchronization to complete before opening the game. Put this after less disruptive fixes because profile removal can create additional sign-in and sync complications.

Test the game in single-player and, if possible, offline. Then compare a private session, a different host, and a wired connection or different network. Fully quit the game before rejoining rather than resuming it.

Record whether the failure occurs while joining, during a stage transition, or when an item appears; whether every player is on Xbox Series X|S or someone is on Xbox One; and the host’s NAT type. 2K provides network guidance through its technical troubleshooting page.
Do not assume cross-generation multiplayer rules are permanent. 2K has announced changes affecting future Xbox One and Xbox Series support, so check the current game version and its official platform announcement before diagnosing a cross-generation session.
11. If other Xbox games crash too
Run another demanding Series X|S game. If several unrelated games crash, investigate console updates, ventilation, power, storage health, and Xbox support rather than repeating Risk of Rain 2-specific reinstalls. A complete shutdown or thermal warning especially warrants console-level help.
Disconnect nonessential third-party accessories and test with an official controller only as a diagnostic measure. Do not treat accessories as a known cause without a repeatable result. Avoid a factory reset until game-specific fixes, console support, and account safeguards have been exhausted; even a reset that retains games and apps creates substantial setup work and may not fix a game-side defect.
When the problem is probably a game bug
If the latest game and console updates are installed, the game has been cleanly reinstalled with all DLC, and a fresh save still reproduces the same crash—particularly at the same stage, item, survivor, or menu—the evidence points more strongly to an unresolved game-side problem than to your original save.
Report the exact reproduction rather than assuming the Xbox is faulty. Check the Gearbox support portal and 2K’s current patch notes for an acknowledgment or workaround.
