Steady low FPS in Satisfactory usually means your CPU, GPU, memory, or selected features are running into a sustained limit. Short freezes or uneven frame pacing are more often caused by shader compilation, asset streaming, a recently updated graphics driver, or a mod. Diagnose which pattern you have, then change one variable at a time: verify the installation, update drivers, test another rendering API, review mods, and compare Lumen, Nanite, and TSR settings in the same factory location.
First, identify what kind of slowdown you have
Do not begin by turning every setting to Low. A useful diagnosis separates a consistently slow frame rate from intermittent hitching. Use the same save, factory area, camera direction, resolution, and refresh-rate target for every comparison. Record GPU utilization, CPU utilization or individual-core load, frame time, and VRAM use with your normal monitoring tool.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| FPS remains low while looking at a complex factory | A sustained CPU simulation limit, GPU limit, or expensive feature such as Lumen | Compare GPU utilization and CPU frame time, then test Lumen, Nanite, resolution, and view distance one at a time |
| Brief pauses when entering a new area or seeing an effect for the first time | Shader compilation or asset streaming | Repeat the route after the first pass and check whether the hitch becomes less frequent |
| Stutter begins immediately after a graphics-driver update | The driver shader cache was cleared and is rebuilding | Play the same routes for several minutes and allow first-use shaders to compile before judging the result |
| Slowdowns started after installing or removing a mod | The mod, its version, or changes left in a save | Update or disable every mod, then test a clean profile or backup save |
Epic Unreal Engine engineers describe shader-compilation stutter as a pause that occurs when the renderer discovers a shader is needed immediately before drawing; the driver must finish compiling it before rendering continues. Their February 4, 2025 explanation notes that this can create a long frame, so a hitch does not automatically mean your hardware is permanently too slow.

1. Verify the game files
Coffee Stain Studios’ support guidance starts with “Try verifying your game files.” In your launcher, open Satisfactory’s properties or manage page and run the launcher’s file-verification command. Wait for it to finish, allow any damaged or missing files to be reacquired, then restart the launcher and the game. Verification can repair an incomplete update or a corrupted shader-related asset, but it cannot correct a CPU limit or make unsupported graphics features run faster.

2. Update the graphics driver
The same support page says, “Update your Graphics Drivers.” Install the current driver supplied for your GPU model from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel, reboot Windows, and test the same save. A new driver clears its shader caches; Epic says longer loading and first-use stutter can therefore be normal while those caches rebuild. Give the game a few repeat passes through the affected area before deciding whether the update helped. This is a plausible explanation for temporary hitching, not a guaranteed fix.
3. Test another rendering API
Satisfactory can be launched with different API arguments. In the launcher’s launch-options field, test one option at a time: -d3d11, -dx11, -d3d12, -dx12, or -vulkan when your system and game build support it. Keep resolution, frame cap, upscaler, Lumen, Nanite, and view distance unchanged during each trial. Use the API that gives the best frame-time consistency in your normal factory, not the one that produces a higher peak in an empty area. Remove the argument after testing if it causes crashes, visual corruption, longer shader compilation, or worse frame pacing.
4. Update or disable mods
Bring every installed mod up to the version required by your current Satisfactory build, or disable all mods and test again. If the problem disappears, re-enable mods individually to identify the conflict. Removing a mod does not necessarily undo changes already written into a save; Coffee Stain warns that mod effects can remain after removal. Use a backup save or a new test world before editing an important factory.

Test Lumen, Nanite, and TSR methodically
Lumen and Nanite are Unreal Engine 5 features with higher GPU and API requirements than a basic rendering path. Epic documents DX12 and Shader Model 6 requirements for Lumen and Nanite-capable paths. If your GPU, driver, or selected API does not satisfy those requirements, disabling the feature or switching APIs is a diagnostic step, not a sign that your installation is broken.
Use a controlled graphics test
- Load the same save and stand at the same position with the same camera angle.
- Write down the current resolution, refresh rate, frame cap, API, Lumen mode, Nanite state, TSR preset, shadows, and view distance.
- Change exactly one setting, then move through the same route for at least one repeat pass.
- Compare average frame time and the worst hitch, not only the displayed FPS number.
- Keep the change only if it improves the target experience without introducing unacceptable image quality or instability.
Check Lumen first when the GPU is busy
If GPU utilization is near its limit and frame time rises when you look at illuminated buildings, reflective surfaces, or dense scenery, switch Lumen off temporarily and repeat the route. If that helps, try a lower Lumen quality rather than changing several unrelated settings. The Satisfactory reference recommends TSR’s Performance preset with Lumen Medium or High when Lumen is enabled; treat that as a starting combination, then validate it on your hardware. Lumen can be unavailable or unsuitable on an API or GPU that lacks the required DX12 and Shader Model 6 support.
Check Nanite separately
Disable Nanite for one comparison while leaving Lumen and TSR unchanged. Nanite-capable paths have their own API and hardware requirements, so this test can reveal whether geometry processing is the expensive part. Re-enable it if the visual benefit is worth the frame-time cost. Do not assume Nanite is responsible for every factory slowdown: a CPU-bound simulation will not be fixed by a GPU setting.

Use TSR as an image-quality/performance control
TSR changes how the game reconstructs the final image. Start with the Performance preset recommended in the Satisfactory reference when Lumen is enabled, then compare Balanced or a higher-quality preset if your frame-time budget allows. Keep output resolution and display refresh rate fixed while testing so you can attribute any change to TSR rather than to a hidden resolution change.

Signs of a GPU limit
- GPU utilization stays high while the main CPU thread has spare capacity.
- Lowering output resolution or disabling Lumen produces a clear frame-time improvement.
- VRAM use approaches the card’s capacity and texture or streaming hitches occur.
For a GPU limit, prioritize the output resolution and refresh-rate goal, then test Lumen, Nanite, shadows, effects, and TSR. A 1440p/144-Hz target requires a different graphics budget from 1080p/60-Hz play. Keep enough VRAM for the chosen resolution and enabled features; do not select a card solely by its model name.
Signs of a CPU or simulation limit
- GPU utilization falls well below full load while frame time remains high.
- FPS collapses when viewing a large, highly automated factory but improves in an empty or distant area.
- Lowering resolution has little effect.
In this case, reduce CPU-heavy view distance or simulation-related settings where available, close background workloads, and compare a less complex area. A faster GPU cannot remove a simulation bottleneck. Satisfactory has no universal PC FPS threshold published by the reviewed official sources, so judge success by consistent frame time at your chosen cap rather than by an invented “normal” number.

Account for shader and streaming behavior
Shader compilation can produce a single long frame even when average FPS looks healthy. After a driver update or a fresh installation, deliberately revisit the areas and effects that stuttered so the cache can rebuild. If each repeat is smoother, the behavior is consistent with cache warm-up. If the same hitch repeats indefinitely, verify files, test another API, and check mods instead of waiting forever for a cache that is not resolving the issue.
Asset streaming can also hitch when a factory loads new geometry or effects. Keep the comparison route identical and distinguish a one-time pause from recurring pauses at the same location. Recurring pauses combined with high VRAM use point toward a memory or settings limit; recurring pauses with low GPU use warrant CPU, storage, background-process, and mod checks.
Match hardware to your target, not to a generic FPS promise
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 guidance lists 32 GB of RAM and at least 8 GB of graphics memory as recommended development hardware. It names AMD RX 6000-series and newer, Intel Arc A-series and newer, and NVIDIA RTX 2000-series and newer families for Lumen requirements. These are engine-development recommendations, not a Satisfactory FPS guarantee. Actual performance still depends on factory size, resolution, refresh rate, API, driver, and enabled features.

Upgrade only after the software tests identify a persistent bottleneck. If the GPU is saturated at your target resolution, a graphics-card upgrade is relevant. If the GPU is lightly loaded while frame time is high in a huge factory, investigate CPU and simulation limits first. No card guarantees a fixed FPS across every Satisfactory save.
Console frame-rate modes
Coffee Stain’s current support information, published in the context of the full 1.0 release on September 10, 2024, lists 30 FPS Quality Mode, 60 FPS Performance Mode, and 40 FPS Balanced Mode on supported displays. These are console mode targets, not measurements for every PC. On a compatible display, choose the mode that matches your priority: image quality, responsiveness, or a middle ground. If a mode is unavailable, confirm that the display and console support the required refresh behavior.
When a change makes things worse
- Crashes after an API switch: remove the launch argument, verify files, and return to the previously stable API.
- Black screen or severe artifacts: disable Lumen or Nanite, restart, and install the current official graphics driver.
- Stutter persists after a driver update: repeat the route long enough for shader caches to rebuild, then compare against another API.
- A save behaves differently after mod removal: restore a backup or test a clean world because mod effects can remain in the save.
- Lowering resolution changes nothing: treat that as evidence for a CPU or simulation limit rather than continuing to lower image quality.
A practical order of operations
- Reproduce the drop in a named save, location, camera angle, and settings profile.
- Classify it as sustained low FPS or intermittent hitching and record CPU, GPU, frame time, and VRAM behavior.
- Verify game files.
- Update the graphics driver and allow time for shader caches to rebuild.
- Disable or update mods, testing a backup or clean world when necessary.
- Test
-d3d11,-dx11,-d3d12,-dx12, and-vulkanone at a time when appropriate. - Change Lumen, Nanite, and TSR individually, using the same route for each comparison.
- Only then decide whether the remaining bottleneck justifies a CPU, GPU, RAM, or VRAM upgrade.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, reduce certain CPU, RAM, and disk loads, clear temporary and cache files, and provide crash-log and vulnerability-check features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and cannot repair every game crash; results vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I disable Lumen to fix every FPS drop?
No. Disable it as a controlled test when GPU frame time is high. If the slowdown is CPU-bound, changing Lumen may have little effect.
Why did stutter appear after my driver update?
A new driver clears shader caches. Epic says first-use compilation can temporarily cause longer loading and hitches while those caches rebuild.
Can removing a mod restore a save completely?
Not always. Coffee Stain warns that mod effects can remain in save files, so use a backup or clean test world.
