Sea of Thieves crashes are usually tied to an outdated Windows or graphics-driver installation, damaged game files, a Microsoft Store installation problem, graphics API settings, overlays, security software or unstable hardware. Start with Rare’s first-line sequence: update Windows and your GPU driver, verify or reset the installation for your store, disable overlays and overclocks, then retest. If the game crashes on launch or shows a black screen, try Direct3D 11. PS5 players should update system software, restore licenses, power-cycle, rebuild the database and use internal storage before reinstalling.
Use the sections below according to where the failure occurs: launch, black screen, mid-session crash or a complete computer shutdown. The correct store and platform determine which repair steps apply.

Identify where the crash happens
The failure point narrows the likely cause. A crash before the main menu points toward installation files, Windows, drivers, security software or the graphics API. A black screen shortly after launch is a known Windows symptom; Rare says its team is aware of users whose game becomes stuck or crashes on a black screen after starting. A crash after several minutes is more often related to overlays, background applications, overclocking, heat or unstable drivers. A complete PC shutdown is not a normal game crash and should be investigated as a system or hardware fault.
Recommended Free Tools
- Launch or black screen: follow the Windows update, store-repair, Direct3D and security-software sections first.
- Crash during play: disable overlays, background utilities and custom CPU/GPU overclocks, then check temperatures and drivers.
- Steam: verify local files and review Steam settings.
- Microsoft Store or Xbox app: use
wsreset, Windows app repair/reset and the documented account, language and region checks. - PS5: use the console recovery sequence in its own section.
- Whole-PC power-off: stop treating it as only a game-file problem and test hardware, storage, temperatures and the operating-system installation.

The listing is for the Xbox version of the game on Windows 10/11 and was accessed in 2026. If the PC is below the minimum, crashes may result from insufficient resources; meeting the minimum does not rule out driver, software or thermal problems.
Apply the universal Windows fixes first
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all available updates and restart. Include any restart that Windows requests before testing the game.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver supplied for the exact Nvidia or AMD graphics model from its official support channel. Restart after installation. If a crash began immediately after a driver change, use the driver package’s rollback option or reinstall the previous known-stable version.
- Close variables that can hook into the game. Turn off Steam and Discord overlays, recording widgets, RGB or hardware-monitoring overlays and other unnecessary background applications. Test without custom CPU or GPU overclocks, undervolts or aggressive memory profiles. Return those settings to their default values until the crash is diagnosed.
- Correct automatic time settings. In Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and automatic time zone, then select Sync now. Incorrect clock or time-zone data can interfere with sign-in and game services.
- Retest after each change. Launch the game, enter the same activity that previously failed and note whether the failure is gone, changed or occurs at a different point. Changing several variables at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
Repair a Steam installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Sea of Thieves and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (called Local Files in some Steam versions).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the check. Steam replaces files that are missing or damaged.
- Restart Steam and test the game with overlays disabled. If verification repeatedly reports damaged files, uninstall and reinstall the game, preferably to a drive with adequate free space.
For a Direct3D 11 test on Steam, open the game’s Properties, stay on General, find Launch Options and enter -d3d11. Leave the option in place only while diagnosing; remove it later if Direct3D 12 works reliably.
Repair a Microsoft Store or Xbox app installation
- Press
Windows + R, typewsresetand press Enter. A blank command window appears briefly and the Microsoft Store opens when the cache reset is complete. - Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Sea of Thieves, select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Use Repair if it is available. If the crash continues, choose Reset. Resetting can remove local app data and may require you to sign in again.
- If the installation remains unstable, uninstall the game and reinstall it to the
C:drive, as Rare’s Windows launch guidance specifies. Ensure there is sufficient free space and allow the installation to finish before launching. - In the Xbox app or Microsoft account settings, make sure Offline Permissions are enabled where that option is offered. If launch problems remain, test the language and region workaround documented by Rare by temporarily using the supported alternate language/region combination, restart Windows and test again, then restore your normal settings if it makes no difference.
Do not copy Steam verification instructions to the Microsoft Store version: the stores use different file-management systems, so the repair and reset controls above are the relevant ones.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Try Direct3D 11 when launch or rendering fails
Sea of Thieves is optimized for Direct3D 12, but Rare documents Direct3D 11 as a compatibility test when launch crashes occur. This is a diagnostic change, not a promise of higher performance.

Steam launch option
Use Steam’s Properties > General > Launch Options field and enter -d3d11. Start the game. If it now reaches the menu, the Direct3D 12 path, its shader cache or a driver interaction is a likely variable. Keep Windows and the graphics driver current before deciding whether to continue using Direct3D 11.
Microsoft Store/Xbox app configuration
Close the game, press Windows + R, and open:
%LOCALAPPDATA%AthenaSavedConfigWinGDKGameUserSettings.ini
Find D3DVersion=12 and change it to D3DVersion=11. Save the file and launch the game. If Windows blocks the save, copy the file to a safe location first and check that the editor has permission to write in the folder.
Steam configuration file
For Steam, open the game’s WindowsClient configuration folder and edit its GameUserSettings.ini file in the same way, changing D3DVersion=12 to D3DVersion=11. The exact Steam library location varies by drive and library-folder choice, so use Steam’s Properties > Installed Files > Browse command to locate the installation rather than guessing a path.
If Direct3D 11 does not help, restore the value to 12, remove the Steam launch option and continue with driver, file-integrity and interference checks. A setting change that works once but fails again after an update may indicate a driver or damaged-file issue rather than a permanent API limitation.

Check Trend Micro interference
Rare’s guidance updated March 2, 2026, identifies Trend Micro as software that can interfere with Sea of Thieves launch, rendering or gameplay. Add the current, versioned Sea of Thieves installation folder to Trend Micro > Exception Lists > Programs/folders, then retest. The folder name can change when the game updates, so review the exception after each update.
Open Trend Micro’s Security Report and check whether SoTGame.exe was quarantined. If it was, restore the file and add the installation folder to the exception list before launching again. Do not restore an unrelated file or disable protection globally; use the exact game executable and folder identified by the report.
Resolve a black screen at startup
- Complete Windows and graphics-driver updates, then restart.
- Disable Steam and Discord overlays, capture tools and nonessential background applications.
- Verify Steam files, or reset/reinstall the Microsoft Store version using the store-specific instructions above.
- Try Direct3D 11 with
-d3d11or the appropriateGameUserSettings.iniedit. - Check Trend Micro exceptions and quarantine history if that security product is installed.
- If the window opens but remains black, press
Alt + Enteronce to switch display mode, then test a lower resolution or borderless mode from the game settings. Revert display changes if they have no effect.
Rare’s Windows launch article specifically acknowledges black-screen launch crashes; seeing one does not by itself prove that the PC is infected or that the graphics card has failed.

Remove software conflicts
Run one clean test with overlays, recording utilities, performance monitors, RGB-control tools and unnecessary background applications closed. If the crash disappears, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict. Keep custom CPU and GPU overclocks disabled during this process, including automatic “game” profiles supplied by tuning software.
Check heat, power and memory
Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while playing and confirm that fans are working and vents are clear. Run a memory diagnostic if Windows reports application errors or if unrelated programs also crash. Check that the power supply is appropriate for the graphics card and that its cables are firmly connected. These checks matter especially when the crash appears after several minutes under load.
Check storage health and free space
Confirm that the game drive has free space for updates, shader caches and the Windows page file. Use Windows’ drive-health information or the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility to investigate warnings. A failing or nearly full drive can turn a normal file read into a crash.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the entire PC shuts down
Rare states that a game crash should not shut down the entire system. A power-off, reboot or firmware-level freeze therefore needs a hardware and operating-system investigation rather than repeated game reinstalls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check CPU and GPU temperatures under load and inspect cooling, fans and dust.
- Test system RAM and remove any overclock or memory-timing profile.
- Check the graphics card, power supply and motherboard for instability or loose connections.
- Review Windows Event Viewer after rebooting for hardware-error or unexpected-shutdown entries.
- Check the health and free space of the game drive and the Windows system drive.
- Install pending Windows and hardware-firmware updates, then retest at default settings.
If other demanding games also trigger shutdowns, stop using the PC until the power, cooling and hardware checks are complete. A normal application crash should return you to Windows; loss of power points elsewhere in the system.

Fix Sea of Thieves crashes on PS5
- Install the latest PS5 system software from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Restore licenses from Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Power-cycle the console. Rare specifies disconnecting power for 20 minutes before reconnecting and testing.
- Start PS5 Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. Rare says rebuilding the database may resolve crash issues. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not interrupt the process.
- Confirm that the game is installed on the PS5’s internal storage. Move it from external storage if necessary.
- If crashes continue, delete and reinstall the game to internal storage, then apply all game updates before launching.
Do not select a Safe Mode option that initializes the console unless you have a complete backup and understand that it can erase user data; rebuilding the database is the targeted step for this symptom.
Use a controlled retest and document the result
After each repair, record the platform and store, whether the crash happened at launch or in a session, the graphics API in use, driver version, overlays running and any error message. Test the same activity for enough time to reproduce the original failure. If only one account, world or display mode fails, note that distinction for Sea of Thieves Support. If every game and application fails, prioritize Windows, storage and hardware diagnostics over further Sea of Thieves changes.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clear temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software and does not repair every crash, so results vary.

Practical verdict
For most Windows crashes, the highest-value order is Windows update, graphics-driver update, overlay and overclock removal, then store-specific file repair. Use Direct3D 11 only as a targeted compatibility test, check Trend Micro exceptions when applicable, and treat a complete shutdown as a hardware or operating-system warning. On PS5, update, restore licenses, power-cycle, rebuild the database and use internal storage before reinstalling.
