The “selected boot device failed” message means your PC’s firmware or Windows Recovery Environment cannot start the Windows installation you selected. The cause is usually an incorrect boot entry or firmware mode, damaged EFI/BCD boot files, a badly created USB installer, or an internal drive that is missing or failing. Protect important files first, then check whether the drive appears in BIOS/UEFI. If it is visible and passes diagnostics, Startup Repair or a targeted bcdboot repair can normally preserve the installation. If BIOS cannot detect the drive or diagnostics report errors, stop rebuilding software and arrange drive service or replacement.

What does “selected boot device failed” mean?

At power-on, firmware must find a bootloader on a storage device and hand control to Windows. The error appears when the selected target cannot complete that handoff. It is a boot-path failure rather than a single, specific Windows error.

There are five practical possibilities:

  • The firmware selected the wrong disk or the wrong entry on the right disk.
  • The PC is set to Legacy/CSM or UEFI mode that does not match the installation’s partition style.
  • Secure Boot is blocking media or a bootloader that the firmware cannot validate.
  • The Windows EFI System Partition or Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store is damaged.
  • The internal drive, its connection, or external installation media is not readable.

Do not assume that an SSD appearing in BIOS proves Windows is healthy. Firmware may detect the hardware while the EFI partition, boot entry, or Windows volume is unusable.

What should I do before trying a repair?

Preserve data before changing partitions or reinstalling Windows. Recovery commands can be non-destructive when used on the correct volumes, but a wrong DiskPart selection, a format, a reset, or a clean installation can permanently remove files.

  1. Disconnect unnecessary external drives and memory cards. Leave connected only the keyboard, display, power, and the storage or USB media you actually need.
  2. If the files are important and the drive is making unusual noises, disappearing, or reporting read errors, stop repeated boot attempts. Arrange professional data recovery or copy the drive before repair.
  3. Do not run diskpart clean, format the Windows partition, or start a clean install unless you have a verified backup and intentionally want to erase the installation.
  4. Keep a note of the current symptoms: whether the internal drive is listed in firmware, whether a Windows Boot Manager entry exists, and whether the failure happens with internal Windows, a USB installer, or both.

Recovery actions recommended by PC manufacturers also advise backing up before using reset, reinstall, or partition tools.

Is the internal drive visible in BIOS or UEFI?

This is the most important branch. If firmware cannot see the drive, repairing Windows boot files will not fix a hardware-detection problem.

Open the firmware setup

Restart the computer and press the setup key shown by its manufacturer, commonly a function key, Delete, or Escape. On some PCs the key appears briefly on the first logo screen; consult the model’s support documentation if the prompt is not visible.

Check the storage information

  • Look under Storage, NVMe, SATA, Information, or a similarly named page.
  • Confirm that the internal SSD or hard disk is listed with a model and capacity.
  • Open the Boot page and look for Windows Boot Manager associated with that drive.

If the drive is absent, power off and, only if the computer’s service instructions allow it, inspect the cable or connector. A loose connection, failed SSD, or failed motherboard storage interface requires hardware diagnosis, not BCDBoot. Run the manufacturer’s built-in storage test when available. Record any failure code and use the warranty or a compatible replacement route before attempting a reinstall.

Use the result to choose the next step

Firmware result Likely problem Next action
Drive absent Connection, drive, or storage-controller failure Run vendor diagnostics; inspect serviceable connections; arrange repair or replacement if the test fails.
Drive present, Windows Boot Manager absent EFI files or boot entry damaged, or mode mismatch Check UEFI/Legacy settings, then use Startup Repair or BCDBoot.
Drive and Windows Boot Manager present, but boot still fails Corrupt boot files, BCD, or Windows startup components Run Startup Repair; if needed, rebuild the EFI boot files.
Only USB is absent Media was not created correctly, or firmware is filtering it Recreate official media and select its UEFI boot entry.

How do I correct boot order and UEFI or Legacy mode?

The firmware mode must match how Windows was installed. Modern Windows 10 installations normally use UEFI firmware with a GPT disk; older installations may use Legacy BIOS/CSM with MBR. Switching modes at random can make a previously working installation unbootable.

  1. In the Boot page, place Windows Boot Manager for the internal Windows disk above generic disk or network entries.
  2. If starting from a USB, choose the entry explicitly labeled UEFI: followed by the USB name when two entries are offered.
  3. Check whether the system is set to UEFI, Legacy, or Legacy/CSM. Leave it on the mode that matches the installation rather than changing it merely because one setting sounds newer.
  4. Save changes and restart. If Windows starts, the problem was selection or mode rather than missing files.

When official installation media does not appear in the boot menu, Microsoft advises consulting the computer manufacturer about temporarily disabling Secure Boot. Re-enable Secure Boot after testing or installing trusted media. Secure Boot is a firmware validation feature; disabling it is a diagnostic step, not a permanent repair recommendation.

How do I run Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment?

Startup Repair is the least invasive automated repair for a detected Windows installation. It examines common startup components and attempts to correct them without deleting personal files.

  1. Turn the PC on and allow Windows to fail. After repeated failed starts, Windows may open Automatic Repair. If it does not, boot from official Windows 10 recovery or installation media.
  2. Select Repair your computer rather than Install now when that option is shown.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Startup Repair.
  4. Select the Windows installation and provide an account password if requested.
  5. Let the process finish, remove USB media if prompted, and restart.

If Startup Repair reports that it could not repair the PC, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and open Command Prompt. Do not repeatedly run random boot commands; first identify the Windows and EFI volumes.

How do I rebuild the EFI boot files with BCDBoot?

BCDBoot copies fresh Windows boot files to the system partition and creates a BCD store. Microsoft documents it as a command-line tool for configuring boot files so a PC can start Windows. The procedure below is for a UEFI installation whose drive is visible in firmware.

1. Identify the Windows volume

In WinRE, drive letters can change. The recovery environment itself normally uses X:, so the Windows partition may be C:, D:, or another letter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
diskpart
list volume

Look for the large NTFS volume that contains the Windows directory. Exit DiskPart temporarily and test candidates:

exit
dir C:Windows
dir D:Windows
dir E:Windows

The correct volume will show folders such as System32. Substitute that letter in every later command. In the example below, the verified Windows volume is C:.

2. Identify the FAT32 EFI System Partition

Start DiskPart again and inspect volumes:

diskpart
list volume

Find the small FAT32 volume marked as an EFI or system partition. Do not select the large Windows volume and do not format anything. Select the verified EFI volume and give it a temporary letter:

select volume <number>
assign letter=Y
exit

Replace <number> with the volume number you actually identified. The temporary letter can be removed later, but it is not necessary for the boot repair to work.

3. Recreate the UEFI boot files

Run BCDBoot with the verified Windows and EFI letters:

bcdboot C:Windows /s Y: /f UEFI

A successful command reports that boot files were created. If your Windows directory was on D:, use:

bcdboot D:Windows /s Y: /f UEFI

Restart, enter firmware setup if necessary, and select the newly available Windows Boot Manager entry. If the command says it cannot copy files, recheck both letters with dir; a wrong letter is more common than a missing command.

4. When the basic BCDBoot form is appropriate

Microsoft also documents the simpler form below when the Windows volume is verified and the firmware can determine the system partition:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
bcdboot D:Windows

For a known UEFI layout, specifying the EFI partition with /s Y: and /f UEFI is more explicit. Do not use the UEFI form on a Legacy/MBR installation unless you have deliberately converted and configured the disk.

Should I run bootrec /rebuildbcd?

bootrec /rebuildbcd is included in vendor recovery procedures and can search for Windows installations to add to the BCD store. Use it from the recovery Command Prompt after confirming that the Windows volume is readable.

bootrec /rebuildbcd

If Windows asks whether to add a found installation, answer only for the installation you recognize. A rebuild prompt does not prove the disk is healthy, and it cannot repair a drive that is intermittently disconnecting. If the command finds nothing while dir C:Windows or another verified letter clearly shows Windows, use the EFI-partition BCDBoot procedure instead.

What if Windows Recovery Environment is unavailable?

Create official Windows 10 installation or recovery media on another working PC. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 download page lists version 22H2 and requires a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB for the Media Creation Tool. Everything on that USB will be deleted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB or ISO.
  2. Match the target computer’s language, Windows edition, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  3. Use a blank USB of at least 8 GB and back up anything on it first; creation erases its contents.
  4. Insert it into the failed PC, open the one-time boot menu using the manufacturer’s key, and choose the USB entry labeled UEFI when available.
  5. At Windows Setup, choose Repair your computer to reach Startup Repair or Command Prompt. Do not select Install now unless reinstalling is intentional.

If the USB does not appear, verify that it was created by the official tool, try the firmware’s UEFI entry, and consult the manufacturer about Secure Boot settings. A USB that boots on another computer but not this one may expose a firmware, port, or hardware compatibility issue.

How do I fix a failed or invalid USB installer?

When the internal Windows installation is fine but the error appears while booting from USB, recreate the media rather than repairing the internal BCD. Use a different blank USB if the creation process reports errors, and ensure the image matches the target architecture and edition.

Do not treat a USB that merely contains an ISO file as bootable media; it must be written by an approved creation tool. Select the UEFI-labeled USB entry in firmware, and remove other bootable devices while testing so the firmware cannot select the wrong target.

When does the error indicate a failing drive?

Hardware service is the correct path when BIOS/UEFI cannot list the internal drive, the vendor diagnostic fails, or the drive repeatedly disappears during recovery. Software commands cannot rebuild files on storage that the controller cannot reliably read.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs that point to hardware

  • The drive is absent from every firmware storage screen.
  • Vendor diagnostics return a failure code or report unreadable sectors.
  • The drive appears intermittently, vanishes after a restart, or causes DiskPart to hang.
  • Recovery commands fail with input/output errors even though the volume letters are correct.

Before buying a replacement

Confirm the original drive’s interface and physical form factor, such as SATA or NVMe and the size supported by the computer. Check whether the machine requires a specific mounting screw, caddy, or thermal pad. Plan how you will restore a backup or reinstall Windows, and preserve the old drive for data recovery if files were not backed up.

If a drive passes diagnostics and remains visible, replace it only after software repair and data-preservation options are considered. A clean installation on a new drive is destructive to that new drive’s contents but does not repair files left on the original one.

Which fix should I choose?

Use the observed condition, not the wording of the error alone, to select a remedy.

Condition Preferred action Data risk Why
Internal drive visible; Windows Boot Manager missing or startup files damaged Startup Repair, then BCDBoot Low when volumes are correctly identified Repairs boot files without reinstalling Windows.
Firmware mode or boot order does not match the installation Restore the matching UEFI/Legacy mode and select Windows Boot Manager Low Corrects the handoff before changing files.
WinRE missing or damaged Create official USB media and choose Repair your computer Low until Install, Reset, format, or clean commands are selected Provides the same recovery tools from external media.
USB installer not listed or will not boot Recreate official media; select its UEFI entry; review Secure Boot with the manufacturer USB contents are erased during creation Addresses invalid media or firmware filtering.
Drive absent or vendor diagnostics fail Service, data recovery, or compatible SSD replacement Potentially high if no backup exists The problem is hardware visibility or reliability, not just BCD data.

What mistakes commonly make the problem worse?

  • Formatting the EFI partition: Formatting before identifying the Windows volume and having recovery media can remove the only usable boot files.
  • Using the wrong drive letter: WinRE letters are not guaranteed to match normal Windows. Always verify with dir <letter>:Windows.
  • Running DiskPart on the wrong volume: Selecting the large NTFS Windows volume when you intended the small FAT32 EFI volume can lead to data loss.
  • Changing UEFI to Legacy without checking the disk: A GPT/UEFI installation generally will not boot in Legacy mode, and an MBR installation may not boot after an unplanned switch to UEFI.
  • Leaving the USB first in boot order: After repair, remove the USB or restore Windows Boot Manager as the first entry so the computer does not loop into Setup.
  • Assuming a successful BCDBoot message proves the disk is healthy: It confirms files were copied, not that the SSD has no failing sectors or connection problems.
  • Jumping to Reset or clean install: Those options can remove applications and personal data. Use them only after backup and a deliberate reinstall decision.

Does Windows 10 still receive support?

Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2 as the final release and states that free software updates, technical support, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025. That end-of-support status does not change the boot-repair steps above, but a repaired PC should have an upgrade or risk-management plan if its hardware supports a newer Windows release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not postpone a hardware replacement or data backup because the system can be made to boot once. A drive that is disappearing from firmware can fail again without warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover files if Windows still will not start?

Yes, if the storage is readable. Remove the drive and connect it to another computer with a suitable adapter, or use a trusted recovery environment to copy files to a separate disk. If the drive is not detected or produces read errors, minimize power-on attempts and use a professional recovery service instead of repeated repairs.

Why does BIOS show my SSD but not Windows Boot Manager?

BIOS can identify the SSD hardware even when its EFI System Partition or BCD store is damaged. A UEFI-versus-Legacy mismatch can also hide the expected boot entry. Verify the installation mode, then use Startup Repair or BCDBoot after confirming the Windows and EFI volumes.

Will Startup Repair delete my personal files?

Startup Repair is designed to correct startup components without deleting personal files. It is still wise to maintain a backup, because later choices such as Reset this PC, formatting, or a clean installation have different and potentially destructive effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I change from Legacy BIOS to UEFI without reinstalling Windows?

Sometimes, but only after confirming the disk’s partition style and preparing the required EFI partition and boot files. Changing the firmware switch by itself can make an MBR installation or a GPT installation unbootable. Treat conversion as a separate, planned procedure and keep a verified backup.

What should I do after repairing a Windows 10 boot error now that support has ended?

Keep an offline backup and check whether the computer meets the requirements for a supported Windows release. If it cannot be upgraded, limit exposure and plan replacement or another supported operating system; boot repair restores startup but does not restore security updates.
