SESSION1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED is Windows stop code 0x0000006D, meaning Windows could not complete operating-system initialization. It usually appears during early startup, often before the sign-in screen. Start by undoing the most recent hardware, BIOS, update, overclock, memory-profile or peripheral change, then use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to run Startup Repair. If that does not work, remove a recent update or use System Restore, check system files and the disk, verify BIOS storage settings, and create USB recovery media if local recovery is unavailable.
The name alone does not identify the failed component. Microsoft defines parameter 1 as the NT status code that caused initialization to fail; parameters 2, 3 and 4 are zero. Preserve that first parameter and the events immediately before the first crash, because they are more useful than the words “session 1 initialization failed” by themselves.

What does SESSION1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED mean?
SESSION1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED is a Windows bug check, not an application dialog containing the words “session” and “initialization.” Its hexadecimal values are 0x6D and 0x0000006D. Windows raises it when the operating system cannot complete an early initialization stage, so the machine may restart or show a blue screen during startup before you can sign in.
The stop-code label is a symptom rather than a complete diagnosis. Microsoft’s definition assigns parameter 1 to the NT status code that triggered the failure, while parameters 2 through 4 are zero. Write down parameter 1 if it is shown, and note what happened immediately before the first crash. A new disk, memory module, firmware setting, update or USB device can point you toward a different repair path than a machine that began failing without a visible change.

What usually triggers the error, and which clue should I follow first?
No authoritative source establishes a universal cause ranking for this stop code. In practice, the safest first branch is the change that immediately preceded the first failure. Use this table to choose an initial action without changing several variables at once.
| Recent clue | Why it matters | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Added or moved a disk or RAM | A loose connection, incompatible module or changed boot device can prevent initialization. | Power off, remove or reseat the new component if you can do so safely, and restore the previous configuration. |
| Changed BIOS settings, enabled an overclock or memory profile | Firmware values can alter memory training or the storage mode Windows expects. | Load the manufacturer’s optimized defaults and record the original values before further testing. |
| Installed a Windows update | The failure may have begun when updated system components were first loaded. | Use WinRE’s Uninstall Updates option after trying Startup Repair. |
| Connected a dock, card reader, external disk or other USB device | Early boot can be affected by a peripheral, its storage, or its controller. | Disconnect nonessential devices and reconnect them one at a time only after Windows starts. |
| No obvious change, or repeated failures after repairs | A damaged file system, failing disk, memory fault or controller problem becomes more plausible. | Collect logs and test results, then escalate with the evidence rather than repeatedly reinstalling. |
What should I do before changing anything?
Turn the computer off completely. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external storage, docks and card readers, leaving only the display, keyboard and mouse needed to operate recovery. Do not make several BIOS changes or swap multiple components at the same time; a controlled change makes it possible to identify what helped.
Write a short timeline: the last successful boot, every hardware or firmware change, the update date if relevant, and the first appearance of the blue screen. If the stop screen displays a parameter 1 value, photograph or transcribe it. Keep any Startup Repair log, disk-check result, memory-test result and dump file for later diagnosis.
How do I enter Windows Recovery Environment?
If Windows cannot reach the desktop, interrupt startup until Windows displays its recovery screen. From there choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. The exact timing varies by computer: start the machine, and when Windows begins loading, hold the power button to shut it down; repeat the interruption until automatic recovery appears.

Once the Advanced options menu is available, use the least disruptive option that matches your timeline. The table shows what each route changes and when it is appropriate.
| Recovery route | Works when | Personal files | Time and skill | Best clue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | Windows cannot boot but local recovery loads | Designed to leave them in place | Short; low technical skill | Startup configuration or boot files may be damaged |
| Uninstall Updates | A recent quality or feature update preceded the crash | Leaves personal files in place | Short; low technical skill | Failure began immediately after updating |
| System Restore | A restore point predates the first crash | Personal files remain, but system state and installed programs can roll back | Moderate; review the selected restore point | Recent driver, software or configuration change |
| Command Prompt checks | Recovery loads but automated tools fail or corruption is suspected | Commands target system files and the file system; verify the volume first | Moderate to high; command-line work | System-file, component-store or disk errors |
| USB installation media | Local recovery will not start or the recovery partition is unavailable | Media creation itself does not erase the affected disk | More time; requires another working computer | Recovery environment is missing or inaccessible |
How do I run Startup Repair?
- In WinRE select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation when prompted and let the automated check finish. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt it.
- Allow the machine to restart. If it reaches Windows, reconnect devices one at a time and test after each reconnection.
- If Startup Repair reports that it could not repair the PC, return to Advanced options and preserve the message or log before trying the next route.
Startup Repair is an appropriate first recovery action because it does not require you to guess at a disk letter or BIOS value. It cannot correct a physically missing drive, defective memory or every form of system corruption, so a failed result is evidence for the next branch rather than proof that the computer is beyond repair.
How do I remove a recent update or use System Restore?
Uninstall a recent update
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the available option for removing the latest quality update first. If the failure followed a major version change and that choice is offered, use the corresponding feature-update option.
- Let Windows restart and test a normal boot. Do not immediately reinstall the same update until you know whether the stop code has returned.
Use a restore point
- From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, select System Restore.
- Select a restore point dated before the first SESSION1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED crash. Review the affected programs list when Windows presents it.
- Confirm the operation and allow the restart to finish. System Restore rolls back system state, drivers and installed software associated with that point; it is not a replacement for a personal-file backup.
If neither option is available, the absence of a restore point or update-removal entry is itself useful evidence. Continue with file and disk checks rather than repeatedly selecting unrelated recovery actions.
How do I check Windows system files and the disk from Command Prompt?
Recovery uses drive letters differently from normal Windows. A volume that is C: on the desktop might appear as D: or another letter in WinRE. Running a repair command against the wrong volume can produce misleading results, so identify the Windows volume first.

exitand choose Continue to test Windows. If the commands report that the volume is inaccessible, the Windows directory is missing, or the disk has bad sectors, stop treating this as only a system-file problem and preserve the results for hardware support.
If Windows can boot normally, the equivalent online checks are DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth followed by sfc /scannow in an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal. Use the offline forms when the installed copy of Windows cannot start.
Which BIOS and storage settings should I verify?
If the crash started after a BIOS update, reset or settings change, enter firmware setup using the key shown by the computer manufacturer during power-on. Load the manufacturer’s optimized defaults, save, and test once. Then verify that the storage mode matches the mode used when Windows was installed; changing between modes without a plan can make an otherwise intact installation inaccessible.
Check whether the expected system disk is visible in firmware. If it is missing, do not keep changing Windows commands: a disconnected drive, failed drive, controller issue or motherboard problem must be investigated first. Record the original storage setting and every value you alter so you can reverse a failed experiment.
How can I test memory, storage and peripherals?
Once nonessential devices are disconnected, try one controlled boot with the original hardware configuration. If the computer has more than one removable memory module and you are comfortable working inside it, a qualified technician can test modules and slots individually; avoid repeated component swaps that destroy your timeline.

Use the computer manufacturer’s built-in memory test when it is available, and record whether it reports errors. Combine that result with CHKDSK output and firmware disk detection. A disk that disappears in firmware, repeated bad-sector reports, or failures while Windows Setup is reading or writing the drive points toward physical storage, memory, controller or motherboard trouble rather than a simple startup-file repair.

Create Windows installation media on another working computer. The process writes Windows installation files to a USB flash drive; the drive itself is blank physical media, while the Windows files, edition and licensing come from Microsoft’s installation-media process.
- Use a reliable, empty USB flash drive and the official Windows installation-media creation process on the working computer.
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the affected PC, power it on, and open the manufacturer’s one-time boot menu or firmware boot settings.
- Boot from the USB and select Repair your computer rather than starting an installation. This opens recovery tools even when the local recovery partition cannot.
- Retry Startup Repair, update removal, System Restore or Command Prompt checks from the USB-based WinRE. Confirm the Windows volume again because drive letters can still differ.
Do not choose a clean installation merely because the USB starts. A reinstall can change or remove data and should come only after you have decided that repair and recovery options are exhausted and that important files are preserved.
How do I preserve evidence and know when to escalate?
Keep a record containing the first crash time, the exact stop-code spelling, parameter 1, recent changes, Startup Repair’s log if available, DISM and SFC results, CHKDSK output, memory-test results, firmware disk detection and any dump file. This record prevents a repair shop or manufacturer from having to repeat blind experiments.

For deeper analysis, Microsoft documents WinDbg and the !analyze command for displaying bug-check information and examining dump files. Dump analysis is most useful when paired with the parameter and timeline; the stop-code name alone rarely identifies a single failed part.
Seek manufacturer or professional repair when the disk is absent from firmware, CHKDSK reports physical media problems, memory tests fail, Windows Setup cannot reliably read or write the drive, or the machine still crashes after a known-good configuration and recovery media have been tested. Continued failures under those conditions can indicate a disk, memory, controller or motherboard fault that software commands cannot repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SESSION1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED the same as a failed login session?
No. The wording refers to an internal Windows initialization phase, and the 0x0000006D stop normally appears before sign-in. It is not a message from a game, launcher or individual user account.
Can I run SFC without entering recovery mode?
Yes, if Windows starts far enough to open an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal, use the online DISM and SFC commands. When Windows will not boot, use the offline syntax and first confirm the correct volume letter in WinRE.
Does a Windows recovery USB include a new Windows license?
No. The USB supplies installation and recovery files for the selected edition; licensing and activation remain tied to the Windows license for the computer. Use the repair option unless you have deliberately decided to reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat information should I give a repair technician?
Provide the exact 0x0000006D screen, parameter 1, the timeline of hardware or update changes, firmware disk-detection status, Startup Repair messages, command results and memory-test output. That context helps distinguish file corruption from a disk, memory, controller or motherboard fault.
