A SMART Hard Disk 301 message is HP’s warning that Hard Disk 1 may fail soon. It is a prediction, not proof that the drive has already stopped working, but you should treat it as urgent: back up important files first, then run HP’s UEFI storage tests. A repeated failed test normally means replacing the drive. Reseating a loose connection or applying a model-specific firmware patch can help in limited cases, but neither should delay a backup. The correct replacement may be a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, M.2 SATA drive or M.2 NVMe drive; the HP model’s specifications determine which one fits.
What does SMART Hard Disk 301 mean?
HP uses error 301 for “Hard Disk 1: SMART Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure.” SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) watches a drive’s health indicators and produces a prediction about the potential for failure. HP explicitly describes the SMART test as a prediction, not an actual failure, so a computer can still boot after the warning appears.

A shock to the computer or unusually high temperature can trigger it, and a drive can continue working for an unknown period or deteriorate quickly. No authoritative source establishes a universal failure rate or a safe number of hours remaining. Do not plan around a promised survival time.
- Hard Disk 1 identifies the drive position reported by the HP firmware; it does not by itself identify the drive’s size, interface or physical form.
- 301 is not a Windows activation code or a message that can be permanently cleared by changing a preference.
- The warning can appear before obvious symptoms such as slow reads, freezes, missing files or boot failures.
What should I do immediately after seeing error 301?
Back up irreplaceable data before troubleshooting, restarting repeatedly or attempting repairs. HP’s first instruction is to “Immediately back up all important data and files.”

- If Windows starts, copy personal files now. Use an external USB hard drive or SSD, or a network location. Prioritize documents, photos, saved games, project folders, browser exports and any files that cannot be downloaded again.
- Copy rather than move. Keep the original files on the suspect drive until the backup has been opened and checked from another device.
- Work in small batches if the drive is unstable. If a large copy stalls, try the most important folders first instead of repeatedly forcing the computer to restart.
- Verify the destination. Open several copied documents and photos from the external device, and check that the folders and file sizes look complete. A copy operation that reports success is not a substitute for checking the files you cannot replace.
- Do not begin with cosmetic fixes. Disk cleanup, registry changes, repeated reinstalls and other software tweaks do not make a physically deteriorating drive reliable and can consume the time needed for copying data.
If Windows will not boot, connect the drive to another computer only if you can do so safely and have the correct adapter or enclosure. If the disk is making unusual mechanical noises, disconnecting, or producing repeated read errors, minimize power cycles and consider professional data recovery before replacement.
How do I run HP’s built-in diagnostic test?
HP’s preboot diagnostics work even when Windows cannot load. Run the Quick Test first, then the more detailed Extensive Test if the quick check passes but the warning or symptoms continue.
- Hold the computer’s power button for at least five seconds to shut it down completely.
- Turn it on and press Esc repeatedly, about once per second, until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to open Component Tests.
- Select Storage, then choose Quick Test and start the test.
- Read the result and write it down. If the Quick Test finds nothing but the 301 warning or read/write symptoms return, run Extensive Test.
HP describes the Extensive Test as including SMART Check, Short DST, Optimized DST and Long DST. The longer test can take substantially more time, so keep the computer connected to reliable power and avoid interrupting it. Do not close the lid or force a shutdown merely because the progress appears slow; an interrupted test may leave you without a usable result.
If the menu labels differ slightly, use the storage or component-test area in the HP firmware rather than relying on a Windows diagnostic utility. The exact menu wording can vary by product generation, but the recorded result and failure ID are the useful information for support.
Where do I find the failure ID, and why does it matter?
When an HP diagnostic fails, it can display a 24-digit failure ID along with a product ID. Photograph or copy both values exactly before leaving the screen. HP support uses them to identify the test result, arrange repair or drive replacement and check warranty status. A typed transcription with one wrong digit may not match the diagnostic record.
A failure ID is not a replacement for a backup. Save it with your notes and keep it available if you contact HP or a repair technician. Include the computer’s model name, the date of the warning, the test that failed and any symptoms such as clicking, freezing or disappearing files. This prevents a support conversation from having to start over after the drive is removed.

What should I do if the HP test fails?
A repeated storage-test failure means you should plan to replace the drive rather than trying to restore it with Windows utilities. One limited check is to reseat the drive connection, because a loose connector can mimic a disk fault.

Reseat only when you can work safely
- Shut down, unplug the AC adapter and disconnect the battery when the model’s service procedure permits it.
- Use the model-specific maintenance manual to locate the drive and connector. A precision screwdriver and anti-static wrist strap are useful for a laptop service job.
- Remove and firmly reinstall the drive or its connector, then reassemble the computer.
- Run the HP Quick Test again. If the same failure returns, treat the drive as unreliable and proceed with replacement.
Reseating is worth trying once when the service manual allows it, especially if the computer has recently been dropped or opened. It is not a reason to keep operating a drive that continues to fail SMART or DST checks. Do not open a sealed drive or attempt to repair its internal platters. Reseating is a connection check, not a cure for worn recording media, failing heads or damaged electronics.
Can a firmware update clear SMART 301?
Some HP maintenance guides note that a model-specific drive firmware patch can correct an erroneous SMART message. Check the exact HP product-support page for your computer and drive model. Do not install firmware intended for a different model, and do not postpone the backup while searching for a patch.
If a patch is available, follow HP’s instructions with stable power and a verified backup. Run the storage diagnostics again afterward. A firmware update cannot restore data from a drive that is physically failing; a repeated diagnostic failure still calls for replacement. If HP lists no patch for the exact model, do not use a firmware package found for a similar-looking computer or drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the HP storage tests pass?
A passed test supports continued use, but it does not erase a recurring warning or explain every intermittent symptom. Keep the backup current and observe whether 301 returns, files become unreadable, or the computer develops repeated freezes and read errors.
- Run the Extensive Test when only the Quick Test was completed and symptoms persist.
- Record the date, test name and result so a recurring pattern is clear to support staff.
- Review the support page for the exact HP model for firmware notices and service documentation.
- Plan a replacement if warnings recur, even when one later test reports a pass.
Do not disable the warning merely to make startup quieter. Suppressing a notification does not change the drive’s condition and can remove an important chance to save files. A single pass means the test did not identify a failure at that moment; it is not a guarantee of a future service life.
Which replacement drive fits an HP computer with error 301?
Error 301 identifies a health warning, not a replacement specification. Confirm the HP model, the existing drive’s physical dimensions, connector and interface before ordering. Common possibilities include:
| Drive type | What must match | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5-inch SATA III SSD | 2.5-inch bay, SATA data/power connection and the model’s supported thickness | Many HP laptops use this format, but not all do; the system specifications control compatibility. |
| M.2 SATA SSD | M.2 keying, module length and SATA protocol support | An M.2 SATA module is not automatically interchangeable with an NVMe module. |
| M.2 NVMe SSD | M.2 keying, module length and PCIe/NVMe support in the HP model | An M.2 slot may support SATA, NVMe, or both; confirm before purchase. |
Also compare capacity, warranty terms and the seller’s return policy. Do not assume a universal maximum capacity or a particular speed from the 301 code alone. HP’s own upgrade material describes a 2.5-inch SATA III SSD for some systems while warning readers to consult their system specifications; other HP computers use M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe storage.

Before ordering, write down the full HP product number, not just a family name such as Pavilion or EliteBook. Check whether the bay needs a bracket, caddy or mounting screw, and compare the replacement’s physical thickness with the original. Confirming the interface in the service manual or BIOS/UEFI avoids buying a drive that fits the opening but cannot communicate with the system. Capacity should be large enough for the partitions you intend to clone; a larger drive is not automatically usable if the model has a documented limit.
Should I clone the old drive or reinstall Windows?
Cloning preserves the existing installation and settings when the old disk can still be read consistently. A clean installation is often simpler when the source drive is badly corrupted, malware-affected or no longer readable, but you must reinstall applications and restore personal files from backup.
What you need for a clone
- A destination SSD compatible with the HP model and large enough for the source drive’s partitions.
- A SATA-to-USB adapter or external drive enclosure when cloning a 2.5-inch drive outside the computer.
- Reliable cloning software and a verified backup separate from the source disk.
Safer cloning sequence
- Back up irreplaceable files before starting the clone.
- Connect the destination SSD through the appropriate adapter or enclosure.
- Use the cloning software to copy all required system and recovery partitions, not only the visible Windows volume.
- Verify that the software reports a completed clone and that important files open from the destination when possible.
- Power down, install the SSD in the HP computer and enter BIOS/UEFI to confirm that the new drive is detected.
- Set the new drive as the boot device if necessary, then start Windows and check device and partition status.
Do not erase or repurpose the old drive until the new installation boots and the restored files have been checked. If the source drive repeatedly stops responding during cloning, do not keep restarting it indefinitely. Return to the backup priority and consider professional recovery; a partially completed clone is not proof that every file was copied.
How do I perform a clean replacement?
Use the HP model’s service manual for the exact cover, battery and mounting procedure. In general, disconnect power, remove the old drive, install the compatible SSD, reassemble the computer and verify detection in BIOS/UEFI before installing the operating system.

- Record the Windows edition, activation method and any application installers or license information you will need after the swap.
- Create installation media on another working computer if the old installation cannot be cloned.
- Shut down fully, unplug power and follow the model-specific anti-static precautions.
- Install the SSD without forcing the connector or bending an M.2 module.
- Open BIOS/UEFI and confirm the SSD model appears. If it does not, power down and recheck seating, keying and compatibility.
- Install Windows, apply HP drivers and updates for the model, then restore your files from the verified backup.
A replacement drive that is physically detected but absent from the installer may need initialization or a storage-controller setting appropriate to that HP model. Change BIOS storage settings only when the model’s documentation specifies the correct option; an incorrect change can prevent the existing installation from booting. After setup, run a storage check again and keep the old drive disconnected until you are satisfied that the new system and recovered files work normally.
What if the old drive cannot be read?
Stop repeated power cycles when the disk is disappearing, producing mechanical clicking or returning read errors. Every additional start can reduce the opportunity for a successful recovery, and software repair utilities cannot reconstruct data that the hardware can no longer read.
Disconnect the drive and seek a professional data-recovery service before installing the replacement if the files are irreplaceable. Keep the original drive untouched for the recovery attempt, and provide the diagnostic result and failure ID. No recovery service can guarantee that every file will be recoverable. Do not place the failed disk in a freezer, open its enclosure or run repeated “repair” passes while deciding what to do.

Is it safe to keep using a computer after 301?
It may continue to boot, but use should be limited to completing a backup and collecting diagnostics. A passing test supports normal use according to HP’s result guidance; a recurring warning, failed test or worsening read/write behavior changes the decision toward replacement.
Do not treat a temporary return to normal operation as evidence that the disk is healthy. SMART is designed to warn before a complete outage, and the warning can reappear after a restart or temperature change. If you must use the computer briefly, avoid storing new important work only on that drive and keep the external backup connected only for the time needed to copy and verify files.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SMART 301 delete my files by itself?
The warning is a diagnostic prediction and does not erase files on its own. Data can become inaccessible if the underlying drive failure progresses, which is why copying irreplaceable files takes priority over clearing the message.
Can I clear or permanently disable the 301 warning?
You may be able to dismiss a startup prompt, but clearing the notification does not repair the drive or change its SMART condition. A recurring warning should be investigated, tested and backed up rather than suppressed.
How long will a drive last after SMART 301 appears?
There is no authoritative universal survival time. The drive may continue working for an unknown period or fail quickly, so make decisions based on backup status and diagnostic results instead of a countdown.
Will CHKDSK or reinstalling Windows repair a 301 drive?
Those operations can address certain file-system or operating-system problems, but they cannot reverse worn hardware or failing drive electronics. Running intensive repairs before securing a backup can add unnecessary reads and delay recovery.
Are SSDs immune to SMART warnings?
No. SSDs also report health information and can fail, although their failure symptoms differ from mechanical disks. The HP model and its supported interface still determine whether a replacement SSD is suitable.

Why does the warning return after I reseat the drive?
Reseating only corrects a possible loose connection. If the diagnostic continues to report the same SMART condition, the drive itself remains suspect and should be replaced rather than reseated repeatedly.
What if Quick Test passes but 301 keeps appearing?
Run HP’s Extensive Test, record the results and review the exact model’s support page for firmware information. Keep the backup current; recurring warnings or read/write symptoms justify planning a replacement even after one passing test.
Does a 24-digit failure ID prove every file is lost?
No. It identifies the diagnostic result for HP support and does not itself erase data or predict that every file is unrecoverable. Back up readable files immediately and provide the ID when arranging repair or recovery.
Can I use any 2.5-inch SSD as a replacement?
No. The HP model must support the drive’s dimensions, thickness and SATA connection, and some systems use M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe instead. Confirm the specification before ordering.
Is cloning always safer than a clean installation?
Cloning preserves the existing setup when the source remains readable, but an unstable disk can stop during the process. A clean installation avoids copying corruption but requires installation media, applications and a verified file backup.
The Bottom Line
SMART Hard Disk 301 is an urgent HP prediction, not a guaranteed instant failure. Back up irreplaceable files first, run the Esc → F2 storage diagnostics, and save the 24-digit failure ID. Reseat the connection only as a limited check, verify any firmware patch for the exact model, and replace the drive when the failure repeats. Choose a 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe SSD only after confirming the HP computer’s specifications.
