SQL Server has two different timeout phases, and each requires a different setting. A connection timeout occurs while the client opens a connection (or waits for one from the pool); Microsoft.Data.SqlClient documents a 15-second default. A command timeout occurs after connection succeeds, while SQL Server executes a query; its documented default is 30 seconds. Set Connect Timeout for connection establishment and Command Timeout or SqlCommand.CommandTimeout for query execution. Increasing the wrong value will not fix the error.

First inspect the failing call. A stack trace naming SqlConnection.Open or OpenAsync indicates connection establishment. A trace naming ExecuteReader, ExecuteScalar, ExecuteNonQuery or SqlCommand indicates command execution. The sections below show the exact settings, diagnostic checks and safer retry and cancellation choices.

What is the difference between a connection timeout and a command timeout?

They measure different work. The connection timeout covers opening a SQL Server session, including authentication and network establishment; a command timeout starts only after a connection is available and limits execution of a SQL statement, stored procedure or reader operation.

Failure phase Setting to change Typical scope Documented default What it does not control
Opening the connection Connect Timeout (aliases: Connection Timeout and Timeout) Connection-string default 15 seconds in Microsoft.Data.SqlClient documentation (Microsoft Learn, 2026) Time spent executing a query
Executing a command Command Timeout or SqlCommand.CommandTimeout Connection-string default or one command 30 seconds in Microsoft.Data.SqlClient documentation (Microsoft Learn, 2026) Authentication, connection establishment or waiting for a pooled connection

A message that says “Timeout expired” is not enough to identify the phase. Use the method named in the exception and the elapsed time in your logs before changing a value.

How do I increase the SQL Server connection-string timeout?

Use Connect Timeout when the failure happens during Open or OpenAsync. The value is in seconds, so a 30-second setting is written as Connect Timeout=30.

Set the keyword directly

Server=tcp:sql.example.com,1433;Database=Orders;Integrated Security=true;Connect Timeout=30;

Connection Timeout and Timeout are aliases for the connection setting in Microsoft.Data.SqlClient. Use one spelling consistently rather than adding several aliases to the same string. This setting gives the client more time to establish the session; it does not make a slow query complete faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the string with the supported .NET builder

var builder = new SqlConnectionStringBuilder
{
    DataSource = "tcp:sql.example.com,1433",
    InitialCatalog = "Orders",
    IntegratedSecurity = true,
    ConnectTimeout = 30
};
var connectionString = builder.ConnectionString;

Microsoft recommends SqlConnectionStringBuilder because it validates supported keywords and values, quotes values when needed and avoids unsafe concatenation of untrusted fragments. After changing the string, make sure the application actually uses the resulting value for the connection that fails; changing a configuration file that is not loaded by the running process has no effect.

How do I increase the timeout for a slow SQL command?

If the connection opens successfully and the exception is raised by a command method, set a command timeout. A connection-string Command Timeout establishes the default for supported Microsoft.Data.SqlClient versions, while SqlCommand.CommandTimeout lets one operation use a different limit.

Set a per-command limit

await using var connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
await connection.OpenAsync(cancellationToken);
await using var command = new SqlCommand(sql, connection)
{
    CommandTimeout = 120
};
await command.ExecuteNonQueryAsync(cancellationToken);

This example allows the command 120 seconds, but the cancellation token remains independent. A caller can cancel opening, execution or reader operations before the configured timeout expires. Use a longer value only when the operation is expected to take that long and you have checked for blocking, poor plans and excessive server workload.

Set a connection-string default when appropriate

Server=tcp:sql.example.com,1433;Database=Orders;Integrated Security=true;Command Timeout=120;

A global default affects every command created from that connection configuration, which can allow unrelated queries to wait longer than intended. Prefer the property on a known long-running command when other requests need a shorter limit.

Why does Command Timeout not fix my SQL connection?

Command Timeout is evaluated after a connection exists. It cannot repair a failure in SqlConnection.Open, a DNS problem, a blocked TCP port, authentication or encryption negotiation, or a wait for an available pooled connection. Conversely, raising Connect Timeout does not extend the time allowed for a query that is already running.

  • Open call fails: investigate service availability, endpoint, port, protocol, name resolution, routing, authentication and TLS before changing command settings.
  • Execute call fails: investigate query duration, locks, execution plans and server workload; then choose a command limit that fits the operation.
  • Pool acquisition fails: check disposal and pool capacity. A command timeout is not the control for waiting on a pooled connection.

What should I check when opening the connection times out?

Follow these checks in order. Each one eliminates a different class of failure, so increasing the number repeatedly without testing can hide the real cause.

  1. Confirm the SQL Server service. On the database host, verify that the Database Engine service for the intended instance is running. A stopped service cannot accept a new session, regardless of the client timeout.
  2. Verify the server name, instance and port. Use the exact endpoint in the connection string. A named or nondefault instance may require an explicit TCP port such as tcp:sql.example.com,1433. SQL Server Browser discovery can fail when UDP port 1434 is blocked, so an explicit port can distinguish instance discovery from Database Engine connectivity.
  3. Check the firewall path. The Database Engine’s TCP port must be reachable from the client. Review host and network firewall rules for the configured port; do not assume that a reachable server name means the SQL port is open.
  4. Check protocol agreement. Client and server need at least one common enabled protocol, such as TCP/IP. A disabled or mismatched protocol can produce a timeout even when the machine responds to other network traffic.
  5. Test DNS and routing. With the network tools permitted by your environment, test the server name and, where appropriate, the server’s IP address and port. If the IP and port work but the name does not, the immediate problem is name resolution rather than SQL query execution. Fix DNS or the connection-string name instead of extending the command limit.
  6. Separate authentication and TLS symptoms. If TCP connectivity is present but login negotiation stalls or fails, inspect credentials, server identity and encryption settings. Do not disable certificate validation merely to make a timeout disappear.

How can connection pooling cause a timeout?

Pooling reuses established connections, but a request can wait when the pool has reached its maximum or when previous callers have not returned connections. Dispose connections and commands reliably on every success and failure path. In asynchronous code, use await using or an equivalent finally block so exceptions do not strand leases.

Keep a canonical connection configuration. Exact connection-string differences can create separate pools, splitting capacity and making one pool appear exhausted while another is underused. Differences can include keyword spelling, values or other text that causes the provider to treat the strings as distinct. A timeout while obtaining a pooled connection is a pool-lifecycle problem, not a query-duration problem.

What if the connection works but the query still times out?

Measure the command itself before choosing a larger value. A query can exceed 30 seconds because it is blocked by another transaction, has an inefficient execution plan, scans more data than expected or competes with a heavily loaded server. A longer timeout may be reasonable for a documented report or maintenance operation, but it does not repair those conditions.

Investigate the workload

  • Capture the SQL text, parameters, start time and duration for the failing command.
  • Check whether another session is blocking it and whether the wait is ordinary lock coordination or an unexpected open transaction.
  • Review the execution plan and data volume for regressions after schema, statistics or parameter changes.
  • Compare the operation’s normal duration with the configured command budget; set a limit that leaves room for ordinary variation without allowing an unbounded request.

Keep the command timeout local to the operation when possible. A global increase can make every request consume threads, connections or user patience for longer when the server is already under pressure.

How should retries and cancellation be budgeted?

Retry settings are separate from timeout settings. For idle-connection recovery, Microsoft documents the relationship Command Timeout > (ConnectRetryCount - 1) * ConnectRetryInterval; the command still needs time to run after a connection is recovered.

Use a bounded retry count and a caller-controlled cancellation path. An unlimited retry loop combined with a long command timeout can keep a request alive far beyond the user or job’s useful deadline. Pass a CancellationToken to OpenAsync and the command method so cancellation can stop work independently of either timeout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Command Timeout=0 mean?

Command Timeout=0 means no command time limit. It can leave work waiting indefinitely when a lock, network condition or server failure never clears. Treat it as a deliberate operational choice for a controlled workload, not as the default fix for a timeout error.

Can encryption or certificates create an apparent timeout?

Microsoft.Data.SqlClient 4.0 and later default Encrypt to true. Encryption protects the channel, but certificate validation still has to establish the server’s identity. A certificate problem may surface during connection or login negotiation and should be diagnosed as a security or configuration issue.

TrustServerCertificate=true encrypts the channel while skipping server identity validation. Microsoft advises limiting that setting to controlled development environments. Do not change certificate validation simply because increasing a timeout seems easier; preserve encryption and proper identity checks in production.

Which timeout fix is safest for each failure?

Choose the smallest change that matches the failing phase and keep cancellation and security controls intact.

What is a practical troubleshooting sequence?

  1. Record the exact exception, method name and elapsed time.
  2. Classify it as connection establishment, pool acquisition or command execution.
  3. Apply only the matching timeout property.
  4. For connection failures, verify service, endpoint, port, firewall, protocol, DNS and routing.
  5. For pool symptoms, audit disposal and normalize connection strings.
  6. For command failures, check blocking, plans, parameters and server workload before increasing the limit.
  7. Add a bounded retry policy only for conditions that are genuinely transient.
  8. Pass a cancellation token from the caller and preserve encryption and certificate validation.
  9. Retest with the same workload and record whether the elapsed phase changed; a larger number alone is not evidence that the underlying cause is fixed.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and log app crashes. Frequently asked questions

Does changing a timeout prove that SQL Server is healthy?

No. It only changes how long the client waits. A successful connection after a longer limit can still leave an overloaded server, blocked transaction or inefficient plan unresolved, so retain duration and wait diagnostics.

Why can the same application time out only during busy periods?

Load can expose pool exhaustion, longer lock waits or resource contention that is invisible at idle. Compare pool usage, command duration and blocking during a quiet run and during the incident rather than assuming the network changed.

Should I replace the server name with an IP address permanently?

An IP test is useful for separating DNS from SQL connectivity, but it does not by itself establish the right long-term configuration. If the IP works and the name fails, repair name resolution or the endpoint definition while preserving the intended certificate identity.
