StarCraft II’s “Graphics Device Is Not Available at This Time” message means the game could not initialize or access a usable graphics device. It does not, by itself, prove that your graphics card has failed. Start with the low-risk fixes Blizzard support recommends: reset the game’s Battle.net settings, rebuild Variables.txt, and launch in windowed mode. Then remove overlay or driver conflicts, and only afterward consider a clean graphics-driver installation. If none of those steps works, a DxDiag report containing your GPU, driver, Windows version, and the point at which the error appears gives Blizzard the information needed to separate a driver, DirectX, configuration, or hardware-enumeration problem.
What does “Graphics Device Is Not Available at This Time” mean?
StarCraft II is failing during graphics-device initialization or while trying to access the device after initialization. The game’s error definitions associate this family of failures with an outdated or incompatible video-card driver, missing 3D acceleration, another 3D application holding exclusive access, or a DirectX initialization failure.

A settings file left inconsistent after a monitor, resolution, or graphics-card change can produce the same result as a driver problem. That is why replacing a GPU should not be your first response: the documented troubleshooting path begins with reversible game changes.
Which fix should I try first?
Use the following order. It moves from a game-only reset with little risk to system-wide changes that require more care.

How do I reset StarCraft II settings in Battle.net?
Resetting the game’s options is the safest first action and has resolved a reported case on an RTX 3080 system. Blizzard technical-support moderator Jambrix explicitly advised trying this before more invasive changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Close any running StarCraft II session.
- Open the Battle.net desktop application and select StarCraft II.
- Open the game’s settings menu (the gear or options control beside the Play button).
- Choose the command to Reset Options or Reset In-Game Options. The exact wording can vary with the Battle.net client version.
- Start the game normally.
This reset targets StarCraft II’s stored options rather than your graphics hardware. It can return resolution, display mode, quality, and related preferences to defaults, so you may need to set them again after a successful launch. If the error remains, continue to the local configuration reset instead of repeatedly clicking Play.
How do I rebuild Variables.txt?
StarCraft II stores local configuration in Variables.txt. Blizzard support identifies this file as a reset point when settings become inconsistent after a hardware or resolution change.
- Exit StarCraft II and close the Battle.net client so it cannot rewrite the file while you work.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to
DocumentsStarCraft II. - Find
Variables.txt. Before changing it, copy it to another folder if you want to preserve the old settings. - Rename the file to something such as
Variables.txt.backup. Renaming is preferable to permanent deletion because it is reversible. If you cannot rename it, delete it only after making the backup. - Launch StarCraft II. The game will start without the previous local variables and can create a fresh configuration.
If the game opens after this step, the old configuration was a strong suspect. Reapply graphics options gradually rather than restoring every old value at once; changing one setting at a time makes it easier to identify a mode that triggers the error again. If the file is not present, do not invent a replacement: proceed to the display-mode and conflict checks, then report that the file was absent if you contact support.

How do I force StarCraft II to start in windowed mode?
Fullscreen initialization can fail even when the GPU and driver work in other applications. A windowed launch is a reversible diagnostic: if it succeeds, the problem is likely connected to the previous display mode, resolution, or monitor negotiation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In Battle.net, select StarCraft II and open its game settings.
- Enable Additional command-line arguments (or the similarly named advanced launch-arguments box).
- Enter
-Displaymode 0exactly, including the hyphen and the space. - Save the setting and launch the game.
Blizzard replies also document -w and -windowed as alternatives. Use one argument at a time; combining several windowed switches does not provide extra benefit and makes later troubleshooting less clear.
Once StarCraft II launches, leave the argument in place while you test a match or the menus. You can remove it later and select a different display mode from inside the game. If removing it immediately brings the error back, keep the game windowed and tell support that the launch succeeds only with the argument.
How do overlays, background programs, and NVIDIA DSR cause this error?
Another 3D application or overlay can interact with StarCraft II’s graphics context, and Blizzard support lists exclusive access as a related failure category. Treat this as a controlled test: close software that draws over games or hooks into them, then launch StarCraft II before reopening anything.
Close overlay and capture software
- Exit chat, recording, performance-monitoring, RGB-control, and game-overlay utilities that are active in the notification area or Task Manager.
- Disable the overlay feature rather than uninstalling the entire application when that option is available.
- Restart Battle.net after closing the software, then test StarCraft II with no overlay enabled.
The purpose is not to label one particular program as incompatible. Blizzard moderator Caterpepi noted that programs interact differently because they are built on different engines and system integrations, so a conflict can be specific to one machine.

Disable NVIDIA DSR factors for the game
If you use an NVIDIA GPU, open NVIDIA Control Panel and inspect the DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) factors assigned to StarCraft II. Disable those factors for the game, apply the change, and launch again. DSR changes the resolutions exposed to an application; removing it is a reversible way to test whether StarCraft II is failing while enumerating an unusual display mode.
If you use a different GPU vendor, skip the NVIDIA-specific check and continue with the general overlay and windowed-mode tests. Do not install a vendor utility merely to perform this step.
When should I clean-install the graphics driver?
Use a clean driver installation only after resetting Battle.net options, rebuilding the local configuration, forcing windowed mode, and removing conflicts. A clean install changes the system-wide graphics driver, so it carries more risk and is not proof that the driver was the original cause.
Prepare before removing the driver
- Record the exact GPU model and your Windows version.
- Obtain the current driver intended for that GPU from its manufacturer before disconnecting from the internet or removing the existing package.
- Close Battle.net and every 3D application.
- Back up important work and create a restore point if your Windows setup supports one.
Run the documented clean-install sequence
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove the existing graphics-driver package. Follow DDU’s own instructions for the appropriate restart mode.
- Restart Windows when DDU requests it.
- Install the current driver for the specific GPU model, using the vendor installer’s clean-install option if offered.
- Restart again, open Battle.net, and test StarCraft II with the default game settings first.
Blizzard moderators recommend DDU followed by the current driver when resetting settings does not solve the problem. That recommendation is a troubleshooting branch, not a claim that every “graphics device” error is a driver fault. If the clean installation introduces a new problem, use Windows’ normal driver rollback or the restore point you created, then include the change in your support report.
What should I do if the error still appears?
At this point, stop changing several variables at once and collect diagnostics. Blizzard forum support requests DxDiag details to distinguish driver, graphics API, and hardware-enumeration failures.

Create a DxDiag report on Windows
- Press
Windows key + R, enterdxdiag, and press Enter. - Allow the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to finish checking your system.
- Choose Save All Information and save the text report somewhere easy to find.
- Keep the report with your support request rather than pasting only a fragment of it.
Include the details support needs
- GPU model, including whether the system has more than one graphics adapter.
- Installed graphics-driver version and the date you installed or clean-installed it.
- Windows version and whether the problem began after a Windows, driver, monitor, or resolution change.
- Whether the message appears before any game window opens, while the window is opening, or after the menu appears.
- Which steps you completed: Battle.net reset,
Variables.txtrename, windowed argument, overlay/DSR test, and driver reinstall. - The DxDiag report requested by the support representative.
These timing details have diagnostic value. An error before a window appears points toward device enumeration or API initialization; an error after a window opens can point toward display-mode or overlay interaction. Do not claim a hardware failure solely because the message names a graphics device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if one fix works but the problem returns?
A returning error usually means a setting or background condition was reintroduced. Change one item at a time so you can identify the trigger.
It returns after changing resolution or monitor
Reapply the Battle.net reset or rename Variables.txt again, then start with windowed mode. Add your preferred resolution only after the game has launched successfully at its defaults.

It returns after a driver update

Should I replace my graphics card or cables?
Not based on this message alone. The documented error categories include configuration, software access, driver, and DirectX initialization problems, and a settings reset has fixed at least one reported case on modern hardware. Consider hardware replacement only after a separate diagnosis shows problems in other 3D applications, visible artifacts, crashes, or a device that Windows cannot enumerate; those symptoms are outside what this StarCraft II message establishes.
Can I undo each troubleshooting step?
Most of the recommended sequence is deliberately reversible. Battle.net options can be configured again, a renamed Variables.txt can be restored, command-line arguments can be removed, and DSR or overlay settings can be re-enabled. A driver clean install is the exception: it changes system software, which is why it belongs near the end and should be preceded by a backup or restore plan.
Why does the error mention graphics when other games work?
Different games use different engines and interact with Windows, DirectX, drivers, and overlays in different ways. Blizzard support specifically cautions that programs can interact with the same system differently, so success in another game does not rule out a StarCraft II-specific initialization conflict. It also does not prove that StarCraft II is the only application affected; test another 3D program if you suspect a broader driver or hardware issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to run every fix if the game starts after the first one?
No. Once StarCraft II launches consistently, stop and verify that menus and a normal game session work. Applying later system-wide changes after a successful game-only reset adds risk without adding useful information.
What should I do if StarCraft II launches only with the windowed argument?
Keep the argument enabled while you play and make a note that fullscreen initialization is the differentiator. You can later remove it and test display modes one at a time; if fullscreen alone reproduces the error, include that exact behavior in your support request.
Is a missing Variables.txt file itself an error?
Not necessarily. The file is a configuration checkpoint, not a hardware test, so its absence does not identify the cause. Report that it was missing, then continue with the display-mode and conflict checks rather than downloading a replacement file.
Can players on macOS follow the Windows file and DxDiag steps?
No. The path and DxDiag procedure in this guide are Windows-specific. If you use macOS, tell Blizzard support your operating system and platform before applying Windows driver instructions, and use the Battle.net settings reset and platform-appropriate diagnostics instead.
