Install the missing library through your distribution’s package manager for the i386 or multilib architecture, then verify that the 32-bit OpenGL/Vulkan stack matches your GPU and retry the game with its supported Steam Linux Runtime option. Do not download a random .so file or replace a system library by hand.
A 64-bit Linux installation can run 32-bit Steam components and games. The fix depends on your distribution, graphics vendor, the exact library named in the error, and whether that library belongs on the host system or inside Steam’s runtime.

What the “missing 32-bit libraries” error means
Linux shared libraries are compiled for a particular CPU architecture. On an amd64 installation, a package such as a 64-bit OpenGL library cannot satisfy a 32-bit executable, even when both files have similar names. Steam and some native Linux games still include 32-bit binaries, launchers, codecs, or graphics components, so they may request the i386 build of a library.

Graphics libraries are the most common point of failure. A 32-bit OpenGL or Vulkan component must match the 64-bit driver stack already serving your GPU. Installing a Mesa package on a system using a proprietary NVIDIA stack, or selecting a Vulkan driver for the wrong vendor, can leave Steam installed while games still fail to start.
Use this decision path before changing files
- Record the exact error. Write down the missing object, such as
libGL.so.1,libEGL.so.1, or a Vulkan library. Preserve the game’s launch output rather than relying on a shortened desktop notification. - Identify the executable architecture. A 32-bit program needs a 32-bit library; a 64-bit program needs the 64-bit build. If you can access the executable, run
file /path/to/game-binary. Output containing “ELF 32-bit” confirms the i386 case. - Identify the distribution and GPU vendor. Ubuntu/Debian and Arch use different repository models and package names. Determine whether the active graphics stack is Mesa for AMD or Intel, NVIDIA’s driver, or another vendor-specific stack.
- Check support status. If the operating system is obsolete, adding individual packages may not be a durable fix. Valve ended official Steam support for Linux distributions with glibc older than 2.31 on August 15, 2025.
- Install architecture-matched packages from official repositories. Enable i386 or
multilib, refresh package metadata, and install the 32-bit counterpart of the graphics and runtime packages already used in 64-bit mode. - Try the game’s supported Steam Linux Runtime. The runtime can supply a controlled userspace for games that support it, but it does not remove the need for a functioning Steam client and host graphics stack.
This order separates a package-architecture problem from a runtime problem. It also keeps any temporary diagnostic changes reversible.
Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distributions: enable i386 Multi-Arch
Enable the architecture and refresh APT
On an amd64 Ubuntu installation, run:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt updateThe first command allows APT to install i386 packages beside amd64 packages. The second downloads package metadata that includes the newly enabled architecture. If dpkg --print-foreign-architectures lists i386 afterward, the architecture registration succeeded.

Valve’s official Ubuntu launcher example installs both 64-bit and 32-bit Mesa components:
sudo apt install
libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64
libgl1-mesa-dri:i386
libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64
libgl1-mesa-glx:i386Treat that list as an example tied to the release and graphics setup for which Valve documented it. Ubuntu package names change between releases; some current releases may not provide every historical package name. Do not force an old package from an unrelated release merely because its name appears in an error message.
For AMD or Intel systems using Mesa, install the i386 variant of the Mesa package that corresponds to the amd64 package already installed. For NVIDIA or another vendor-specific stack, use that vendor’s distribution-packaged 32-bit driver components instead of mixing them with Mesa’s proprietary-driver replacements. The 32-bit and 64-bit packages must come from the same driver family and repository set.
Confirm that APT installed both architectures
Use APT’s installed-package listing and look for paired entries with :amd64 and :i386 suffixes. If APT proposes removing the 64-bit driver, stop and review the transaction; a correct multilib installation should not require dismantling the working 64-bit graphics stack.
Debian: enable Multi-Arch and install i386 graphics packages
Register i386
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt updateDebian’s Multi-Arch model is the same basic mechanism as Ubuntu’s, but package availability depends on the Debian release and enabled repository components. Keep all repositories on the same release; do not combine packages from stable, testing, and an unrelated third-party repository to obtain one library.

Install Vulkan and OpenGL support
Debian’s Steam documentation gives this example for Mesa and Vulkan support:
sudo apt install
mesa-vulkan-drivers
libglx-mesa0:i386
mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386
libgl1-mesa-dri:i386The exact package set depends on the active release, repository components, and graphics hardware. If the machine uses a vendor-specific driver, select the corresponding i386 driver package rather than installing Mesa packages that do not belong to that stack.
Debian also documents that Steam may use newer system libraries when they are available instead of relying exclusively on its older bundled runtime. That makes a complete, current host installation important even when a game is configured to use a Steam runtime.

Arch Linux: enable the multilib repository
Turn on multilib
Arch does not use APT’s architecture suffixes. Edit /etc/pacman.conf, find the commented multilib section, and enable both lines:
[multilib]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlistSave the file, then refresh package metadata:
sudo pacman -SyuRefreshing with the normal full-system upgrade is important on Arch because partial upgrades can create ABI mismatches between the 64-bit and 32-bit portions of a graphics stack.
Install Steam and the GPU-matched 32-bit driver
Install Steam from the enabled repositories, then install the 32-bit OpenGL and, where needed, Vulkan driver matching the installed GPU. Arch’s documentation emphasizes that the 32-bit Vulkan package must correspond to the vendor used by the 64-bit driver:

Do not allow the package manager to select a driver for a different GPU vendor simply because it satisfies a similarly named dependency. Check the hardware and the installed 64-bit driver before choosing the multilib package.
Why the 32-bit graphics stack must match
OpenGL and Vulkan are not a single file. A game may load a loader library, which then selects a vendor implementation and supporting driver files. The 32-bit loader and implementation must agree with each other and with the kernel-facing driver in use by the 64-bit stack.

Installing only a generic libGL file can therefore produce a different error: the file exists, but it exports the wrong symbols, points to a missing vendor implementation, or selects an incompatible Vulkan ICD. Package managers know these relationships and can keep them synchronized when the correct repository and architecture are selected.
Steam Linux Runtime: when to use it
Steam Linux Runtime is a compatibility environment containing a defined library stack for Linux games. For a game that supports it, the runtime reduces differences between distributions by giving the title a predictable userspace instead of making it depend on every host-library version.
Select the runtime for a supported game
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool if the game’s documentation or Steam metadata identifies a supported runtime.
- Choose the listed Steam Linux Runtime variant, apply the setting, and launch the game again.
Exact runtime names can vary as Valve publishes new versions. Select a runtime explicitly only when the game supports it or when troubleshooting shows that the native host launch is the failing path.

- It cannot start a Steam client whose own host dependencies are missing.
- It does not replace the host GPU kernel module or make an uninstalled 32-bit graphics driver appear.
- It cannot help a game that launches native libraries outside the runtime container.
- It does not justify deleting or overwriting system libraries.
If a title works under Steam Linux Runtime but fails in its native option, that result indicates that the dependency belongs to the game’s userspace or that the host library versions differ. Keep the working runtime selection rather than copying files into system directories.
Find which package owns a missing library
Start with the exact soname in the error, including its suffix and architecture. libGL.so.1, libGLX.so.0, and a Vulkan library are different requirements. A message that says only “32-bit libraries are missing” is not specific enough to choose a package safely.
Use your distribution’s package search facilities to locate the package that provides that soname, then append the architecture selector where the package system supports one. On Debian-family systems, an installed package may appear as package-name:i386; on Arch, the equivalent package is supplied by the multilib repository rather than an APT-style suffix.
After installation, inspect the game’s dependency resolution with:
ldd /path/to/game-binaryLook for lines ending in not found. Run ldd against the actual failing 32-bit executable, not a nearby 64-bit launcher. A clean result for one executable does not prove that every helper process, overlay, or bundled launcher has all of its dependencies.

For a system-level view of registered libraries, ldconfig -p can show whether the loader cache contains an architecture-appropriate entry. The cache is only useful after the correct package is installed; manually adding a foreign file to a search path can hide the real packaging problem.
Common failure modes and precise remedies
You installed the 64-bit package only
Symptom: The package manager reports that the library is installed, but a 32-bit game still reports it missing.
Fix: Install the i386 or multilib build explicitly. On APT systems that means a package ending in :i386; on Arch it means the package from [multilib]. Keep the amd64 or native package installed as well.

The wrong graphics vendor package was selected
Symptom: The game progresses past the missing-file error but Vulkan or OpenGL initialization fails, or the wrong GPU appears.
Fix: Remove the mismatched package only through the package manager, restore the vendor-matched 32-bit package, and ensure its 64-bit counterpart is from the same driver family. Do not copy a replacement library from another distribution.
APT cannot locate an i386 package
Symptom: APT says there is no installation candidate for the requested architecture.
Fix: Confirm that sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 completed, run sudo apt update again, and verify that the enabled repositories publish i386 packages for your release. If the release is out of support, upgrade the operating system instead of adding repositories from a different release.

Pacman installed a package but Vulkan still fails
Symptom: Arch accepts the multilib package, yet the game reports no Vulkan device or selects an unexpected implementation.

Fix: Check that [multilib] is enabled, perform a complete sudo pacman -Syu, and replace the 32-bit Vulkan package with the one matching the active GPU vendor. A successful transaction does not guarantee that the selected ICD is correct.
The game works only with a runtime
Symptom: Native Linux launch fails, while Steam Linux Runtime launches successfully.
Fix: Leave the supported runtime selected. Use the native option only after the host package and graphics stacks are complete. The runtime result is a useful boundary: it shows that the game itself can run with a compatible userspace, not that system libraries should be overwritten.

Symptom: The Steam client exits before a game opens.
Fix: Treat this as a host dependency problem first. Valve’s Linux troubleshooting guidance identifies 32-bit OpenGL support as a common startup requirement and officially supports the most recent Ubuntu LTS with Unity, GNOME, or KDE desktops. Other distributions may work, but they are outside that stated support baseline. Enable the correct architecture and graphics packages before troubleshooting an individual game.
When upgrading Linux is the correct fix
Valve’s current support notice states that Linux distributions with glibc older than 2.31 stopped being officially supported on August 15, 2025. If your release cannot obtain compatible Steam and graphics packages from its own supported repositories, another library workaround is unlikely to be reliable.
Check the distribution’s normal release-upgrade path, back up game saves and configuration files, and move to a supported release before rebuilding the multilib stack. Mixing packages from a newer distribution into an old installation can create ABI conflicts that are harder to repair than the original missing-library error.
What not to do
- Do not download an isolated
.sofile from an unknown website. Its ABI, provenance, and build options may not match your distribution. - Do not overwrite files under system library directories. Package-managed files need to remain tracked so updates and security fixes can replace them safely.
- Do not mix releases casually. Pulling one library from another Ubuntu or Debian release can satisfy a name while breaking symbol-version dependencies.
- Do not mix GPU vendors’ driver stacks. A generic-looking 32-bit package can be the wrong implementation for the active hardware.
- Do not make permanent loader-path hacks while diagnosing. Temporary environment changes may identify which library is involved, but remove them after testing and install the supported package instead.
Host package or Steam runtime? A practical comparison

A repeatable checklist
- Capture the complete error and the exact missing soname.
- Confirm whether the failing executable is ELF 32-bit or ELF 64-bit.
- Identify Ubuntu/Debian versus Arch and the active GPU vendor.
- Enable i386 Multi-Arch or Arch’s
multilibrepository. - Refresh package metadata or complete the normal system upgrade.
- Install the 32-bit OpenGL/Vulkan package that matches the installed 64-bit driver stack.
- Use the distribution package database to verify which package owns the missing object.
- Run
lddon the failing executable and resolve every remainingnot foundentry. - Retry with the game’s supported Steam Linux Runtime option.
- If the distribution is older than Valve’s glibc 2.31 baseline, upgrade rather than copying libraries manually.
Bottom line
Missing 32-bit libraries are normally repaired by enabling the second architecture and installing the repository package that matches the game’s architecture and GPU driver. Ubuntu and Debian use APT Multi-Arch with i386; Arch uses multilib. Keep 32-bit and 64-bit graphics components aligned, use Steam Linux Runtime when the game supports it, and treat an obsolete glibc as an operating-system upgrade problem—not an invitation to download replacement files.
