First, check whether the controller is causing the drift
Try the same controller in another game or, if available, on another supported device. You can also inspect thumbstick response in the Xbox Accessories app. If unwanted movement follows the controller across games or devices, the controller is a likely source. If it happens only in one game or setup, check that game’s input or deadzone settings and the host device’s configuration before arranging a repair.
Try Xbox’s thumbstick calibration tool
Xbox introduced a user-guided thumbstick self-calibration tool in the Xbox Accessories app for Xbox Wireless Controllers. Xbox describes it as a way to address minor issues such as inconsistent responses. Open the Xbox Accessories app on console or PC and follow the available calibration prompts for your supported controller. The tool may not appear or apply to every model or issue.
Calibration is not a guaranteed hardware fix. Xbox states that “Not all thumbstick issues can be resolved with this recalibration tool, including drift due to normal wear and tear.” If the stick continues to register movement after calibration, proceed to service or repair options rather than repeating calibration as though it could reverse component wear. Xbox Wire’s February 2024 update describes the feature and its limits.

Check warranty and service eligibility before opening the controller
Look up the controller’s warranty and available service options with Microsoft before attempting a repair. Coverage and eligibility depend on the product, region, and applicable terms, so there is no single warranty duration to assume. Microsoft’s hardware warranty and repair guidance describes self-repair components and service guides as intended for out-of-warranty repairs by skilled technicians. Check the terms that apply to your controller; the available information does not establish that opening a controller automatically voids every warranty.
Choose repair or replacement based on the exact controller
Microsoft lists replacement components for Xbox Wireless Controllers, including a replacement PCBA and motor assembly. That establishes an official parts route, but it does not mean the listed component will correct every drift symptom or fit every controller revision. Identify the precise model and revision, confirm the part’s compatibility, and consult the matching instructions before buying or fitting anything. See the Microsoft Store Xbox repair-parts listings.

- Note: The analog joystick replacement work requires professional tool kit/repair devices(not included in our package) and good skills in desoldering and soldering. After replacing the joysticks, you can go to the X BOX console or download the "X BOX Accessories" software from the Microsoft Store on PC, then find the "Recalibrate" option and follow the instructions to calibrate the joysticks.
Repair instructions are model-specific. The Xbox Series Controller repair guide includes procedures for that controller family and directs users to recalibrate with the Xbox Accessories app after installing a new mainboard. It is not a general disassembly guide for every Xbox controller.
The Elite Series 2 has separate repair instructions. Microsoft specifies protective equipment and electrostatic-discharge precautions; it also directs users to stop and contact Xbox Support if certain heat or battery-related damage or other safety concerns are found. Do not apply one model’s repair steps or parts to another controller.

- Installation Suggestion: After the joystick is installed, it may not be exactly centered with the your handle motherboard, and calibration is required to center it. Currently, the joystick can be calibrated to the center by adjusting the brush angle or adding an adjustable resistor.In mostly, the joystick offset within 5% is almost imperceptible. Generally, it will only cause a slight rotation of the perspective or automatic walking when it reaches more than 8%, so if the joystick is calibrated to 2% - 3%, it is normal to use.
When to stop troubleshooting
- Calibration resolves the minor response problem: Continue using the controller and monitor whether the issue returns.
- Drift persists across games or devices: Check service eligibility, then compare an appropriate model-specific repair with replacement.
- You cannot confirm the exact model, compatible part, or safe procedure: Use Microsoft or Xbox Support rather than guessing or following instructions for another controller.
- You find battery, heat, or other safety damage: Stop the repair attempt and contact Xbox Support.
There is no supported universal fix or sourced guarantee of a particular repair success rate, lifespan, or cost. The practical choice depends on whether calibration helps, whether service coverage applies, whether an exact compatible part and guide exist, and whether you can carry out the repair safely.
