There is no supported user-installed emulator for God of War III Remastered on Xbox Series X, so stutter, crackling audio, and crashes cannot be fixed by changing an Xbox setting. The Series X|S backward-compatibility service is a curated catalogue for selected Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games; it is not a general PlayStation 4 emulation layer. God of War III Remastered is the PS4 release. If you are seeing RPCS3 settings, you are troubleshooting the separate PS3 original on a PC, not the remaster on an Xbox.
The practical solution is to identify which target you actually have, then use the appropriate path. Xbox Series X owners must use an officially supported release or another supported platform. PC users running the PS3 original in RPCS3 can test a documented stutter regression and two experimental workarounds, but none is a guaranteed fix. A separate unofficial Windows port targets the PS4 remaster and requires a legally obtained game dump; it is not an Xbox emulator.

Start by identifying the game, platform, and emulator
Several different products are commonly called “God of War 3,” and treating them as one executable leads to the wrong troubleshooting advice.
God of War III Remastered is a PlayStation 4 release
God of War III Remastered is the PS4 edition. Its executable, assets, and compatibility questions belong to the PS4 target. A report about the PS3 emulator RPCS3 does not demonstrate that the PS4 remaster runs on Xbox Series X, nor does it establish that a PS4 copy can be loaded into RPCS3.

God of War III is the PlayStation 3 original
The original PS3 game is the title RPCS3 emulates. RPCS3’s compatibility records are organized by exact game ID and release media. The issue report commonly cited for this game is for BCES00510, titled “Heavy stutter in God of War 3 [BCES00510] from build 0.0.28-15404 onward.” That identifier is evidence about the PS3 release represented by that entry, not about the PS4 remaster.
Xbox Series X is not a general PS4-emulation device
Microsoft describes Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility as support for select
Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games, with features varying by game. It does not provide a user-installable PS4 emulator. Consequently, there is no Xbox menu path, graphics option, or accessory that can make the PS4 remaster run through an unsupported emulator layer.

This distinction also explains why buying a faster external SSD, headset, or other Xbox accessory is not a remedy. The documented limitation is the software and platform boundary, not a storage or audio-output defect.
If you are on Xbox Series X
Check whether the game is an officially supported Xbox release
- Open the Microsoft Store or your Xbox library and search for the exact edition you own.
- Confirm that the listing is an Xbox release supported by Xbox backward compatibility, rather than the PS4 remaster.
- If the title is not offered as an Xbox-compatible game, remove any expectation that an emulator setting can make it launch. Xbox Series X does not expose a supported user-installable PS4 emulator.
If a supposed guide asks you to install RPCS3 on the console, load a PS4 image, or change SPURS settings on Xbox, it is mixing platforms. RPCS3 is the PC application for the PS3 original; its controls do not exist in the Xbox dashboard.

What to do when an Xbox game has ordinary playback problems
For a genuinely supported Xbox title, use the console’s normal game-management and system-update procedures, then report the problem through Xbox support if it persists. Those steps address an Xbox build that Microsoft distributes. They cannot convert the PS4 remaster into an Xbox-compatible package, so do not interpret them as an emulation fix for this specific title.
If you are actually running the PS3 original in RPCS3
The following sequence applies only to a Windows, Linux, or other PC installation of RPCS3 running the PS3 original. It is the relevant path for questions such as “How do I stop God of War 3 from stuttering in RPCS3?”
1. Confirm the exact game ID and edition
- Open RPCS3’s game list or compatibility view.
- Locate the entry for the release you dumped and record its game ID. The documented stutter report uses
BCES00510. - Verify that the entry is the PS3 original, not a label containing “Remastered” that refers to the PS4 product.
- Check the compatibility status attached to that exact ID and media entry. RPCS3 classifies observed states as Playable, Ingame, Loadable, or Nothing; a status for one release cannot be transferred to another.
This check prevents a common false diagnosis: a user may have a PS4 dump while following an RPCS3 report for a PS3 disc. No amount of per-game tuning makes those binaries interchangeable.

- Record the exact RPCS3 build number before changing anything.
- Write down the renderer, CPU and GPU models, and whether the RPCS3 window has focus when the hitch or audio fault occurs.
- Repeat the same scene or loading transition so that each test has a comparable starting point.
The issue report describes a regression beginning with builds 0.0.28-15404 and later. A subsequent comment still reported the problem on build 0.0.40-19400. That history means a build change can alter the symptom, but it does not establish a stable version that fixes every system. Treat the build number as part of the diagnosis, not as a promise that updating or downgrading will solve the problem.

3. Check whether window focus changes the stutter
The reporter observed that the stutter disappeared when the RPCS3 window was unfocused. Test this deliberately: reproduce the same section with the emulator focused, then with another window focused while RPCS3 continues running. If the frame pacing or audio changes, record that result. Focus sensitivity points to a scheduling or timing interaction in the reported regression; it does not prove that leaving the window unfocused is a safe permanent solution.
4. Test SPURS values one at a time
The issue discussion reports improvement on a weak six-core CPU when SPURS was set to 2 or 3. Use those values as experiments, not as universal recommendations.
- Open the game’s per-title configuration in RPCS3.
- Change only the SPURS value to
2, apply it, and reproduce the same scene. - Record frame pacing, crackling or dropouts, and whether the game remains stable.
- Restore the prior value, then repeat the test with SPURS set to
3. - Keep the setting only if it improves your repeatable test without introducing another fault.
Do not combine SPURS changes with several undocumented options at once. If the result is worse, return to the previous value so you know which change caused it.
5. Test process priority as a separate experiment
The same report mentions changing process priority as another aid on a weak six-core CPU. Because priority changes affect the whole emulator process, test it independently from SPURS:

- Close the game and note the normal process-priority setting.
- Apply the priority change described in the issue discussion using your operating system’s process controls.
- Run the identical scene and compare stutter and audio timing.
- Undo the change if it has no measurable benefit or causes instability.
These experiments are useful for narrowing down the reported regression. They are not guaranteed fixes, and the issue remained present for at least one commenter on build 0.0.40-19400.
How to handle crackling, dropouts, and audio glitches
Separate audio symptoms from their timing cause
In an emulator, crackling or cutting out can accompany uneven frame or thread scheduling. First establish whether the audio fault appears in the same moment as the visual hitch. Repeat the scene with the window focused and unfocused, then with each SPURS value tested separately. If both symptoms move together, document them as one timing problem for the issue report. If audio alone remains broken, record that distinction rather than assuming a headset or console output is at fault.
Use a controlled rollback when a change worsens audio
- Return the per-game profile to its previous values.
- Restart RPCS3 and repeat the same section.
- Compare the result with the untouched configuration before trying another experiment.
The documented evidence does not identify a specific headset, sound card, Xbox accessory, or audio driver as a cure. Avoid buying hardware on the assumption that it will repair an emulator scheduling regression.
What to do when RPCS3 crashes after an update
Preserve the information that makes the crash diagnosable
- Exact RPCS3 build number, including the full revision.
- Game ID and release media, such as
BCES00510when applicable. - Renderer, CPU, and GPU.
- Whether the crash occurs with the emulator window focused.
- The scene or operation that triggers it and whether it happens every time.
A crash after an update may reflect the same build-specific compatibility change as a stutter, but the cited issue does not establish one universal crash fix. Avoid carrying over a profile from a different game ID or edition.

Return to defaults before adding hacks
- Open the affected title’s per-game configuration.
- Restore non-default tweaks, including experimental SPURS or priority-related changes, to their prior defaults.
- Launch the game and compare the result with the compatibility entry for the exact ID.
- Reintroduce one documented experiment at a time only if you can reproduce the original symptom and measure an improvement.
This procedure distinguishes a regression in the emulator build from a conflict introduced by a custom profile. It also keeps the diagnosis aligned with RPCS3’s game-specific compatibility classifications rather than with a setting copied from another release.
A separate PC option for the PS4 remaster
The gow3_pc repository documents an unofficial Windows port of the PS4 remaster. It runs the game’s x86-64 code on a PC and uses Vulkan for graphics. The documented requirement is a legally obtained CUSA01623 dump at version 1.02.
What this option changes
- It targets the PS4 remaster rather than the PS3 original.
- It runs on compatible Windows hardware, not on Xbox Series X.
- It uses Vulkan, so compatibility depends on the Windows graphics setup supported by that project.
- It requires the user’s own legal dump; it is not a way to download the game or bypass ownership.
Do not use the port’s requirements to diagnose RPCS3. A PS4 CUSA01623 v1.02 dump is not the same input as the PS3 media represented by an RPCS3 ID such as BCES00510. Likewise, success or failure in the Windows port says nothing about whether Xbox Series X can emulate the remaster.

You own an Xbox Series X and want the PS4 remaster
There is no supported user-installed emulator path to repair. Use a platform and release that officially supports the game, or use the separately documented Windows port if you meet its requirements and own the legal dump. Do not spend money on Xbox accessories expecting them to supply a missing PS4 emulator.
You are using RPCS3 and have the PS3 original
Confirm the ID, record the build and hardware, reproduce with focus changes, then test SPURS 2 and 3 and process priority separately. Keep detailed results and revert to defaults when a change hurts stability. The issue history shows a regression and experimental workarounds, not a guaranteed configuration.
You have a PS4 dump and are calling it an RPCS3 game
Stop and identify the edition. RPCS3 is for the PS3 original. The documented PC-native route for the remaster is the unofficial Windows port requiring CUSA01623 v1.02; that route does not run on Xbox Series X.
Why common “fixes” do not answer this problem
- Changing Xbox display settings: cannot add a PS4 emulator that the console does not support.
- Updating RPCS3 for an Xbox problem: RPCS3 is relevant only when a PC is running the PS3 original.
- Copying settings from another God of War entry: compatibility status and behavior are tied to the exact game ID and media.
- Assuming “Remastered” is a better PS3 build: the remaster is a separate PS4 release.
- Buying storage or audio hardware: the cited evidence identifies a software/platform boundary, not a peripheral defect.
- Calling an experimental workaround a fix: SPURS and process-priority changes were reported in an issue discussion and lack a universal guarantee.
What a useful bug report should contain
If the PS3 original still stutters, crackles, or crashes after controlled testing, report the complete context rather than only “God of War 3 is broken.” Include the exact game ID and media, RPCS3 build, renderer, CPU, GPU, focus state, scene, frequency of the failure, and the result with default settings versus SPURS 2, SPURS 3, and the priority experiment. This lets maintainers distinguish the documented regression from an edition mismatch or a profile-specific fault.
