If a Steam Deck game started stuttering, showing trails, or looking soft after you enabled upscaling, turn that setting off and compare the same scene before changing anything else. Then test the game’s upscaler separately from SteamOS scaling, check frame pacing rather than average FPS alone, and follow the external-display steps only if the problem occurs on a TV or monitor. This isolates whether the trigger is image reconstruction, uneven frame delivery, SteamOS composition, or the display path.
What should I check first when upscaling causes a visual problem?
First, note where the problem appears and which setting preceded it. A symptom on the built-in screen calls for a different first test than one limited to a docked TV, and stutter is diagnosed differently from blur or trails.

Before adjusting anything, record the game, its upscaler and quality mode, the render resolution, whether SteamOS scaling is enabled, the SteamOS version and update channel, and whether the issue began immediately after changing a particular option. This is a practical way to keep the comparison controlled; it is not a Valve-prescribed checklist.
- Stutter or uneven motion: inspect frame delivery and minimum/frame behavior in the performance monitor. A steady average FPS does not rule out a slow frame.
- Ghosting or trails: replay the same motion scene with the game’s upscaler disabled, then test another available in-game mode if there is one. There is no universal mode or cause established for ghosting across Steam Deck games.
- Blur or softness: compare the current upscaling mode against the prior setting or native rendering at the same scene and display conditions.
- Problem only on an external display: check the display’s processing, selected mode, connection, and dock before changing unrelated game settings.
Change one control at a time. If you simultaneously alter resolution, the game’s upscaler, SteamOS scaling, and refresh rate, you will not know which change affected the symptom.

How do I isolate the upscaler from other settings?
Restore the game’s previous resolution and upscaling setting, then reproduce the issue in a repeatable scene. If the symptom disappears, enable one upscaling control at a time and compare again; that controlled comparison can identify the setting associated with the change, though it cannot prove a universal cause.
- Choose a repeatable test scene. Use the same game area, camera angle, and type of movement each time. For trails, include moving objects or a camera pan; for softness, compare stationary fine detail and text as well as motion.
- Return to the previous configuration. Disable the recently enabled upscaler or restore the prior resolution. Keep other graphics options unchanged for this first comparison.
- Test game-level scaling by itself. If the title has an in-game upscaler, try its available modes individually. Do not assume a mode name, feature, or result is shared by other games.
- Test SteamOS scaling separately. If it is also active, compare with it off while leaving the game-level setting unchanged, then restore it before testing any further change.
- Compare the result. If blur or trails change while motion remains even, focus on the game’s reconstruction settings and image-quality trade-off. If stutter changes, inspect frame pacing and system performance.
Game-level upscaling and SteamOS scaling are separate variables. A game may render at one resolution and enlarge the image itself, while SteamOS may also be involved in scaling or composition; testing them independently prevents attributing every change to “upscaling” as if it were one system-wide switch.

In official guidance for Baldur’s Gate 3, the developer describes selecting FSR 2.2 under the game’s Video settings as a balance between performance and image sharpness, and notes a performance cost. That is useful evidence that an in-game upscaler can involve trade-offs, not a recommendation that FSR 2.2 is best for every game or that all titles expose the same controls.
How should I compare the settings without creating a misleading test?
Use the same scene and display for each pass, and change only one variable between passes. A useful sequence is the old configuration, the newly enabled game upscaler, and—if available—a different game-level quality mode. Only after recording those results should you test SteamOS scaling separately. If you switch several settings at once, a better-looking image will not tell you which change helped, and a new hitch could come from any of them.
Keep the purpose of each comparison clear. To diagnose softness, look at the same fine detail or text at the same viewing conditions. To diagnose trails, use the same moving object or camera motion. To diagnose stutter, reproduce the same action while watching the performance monitor. These are controlled troubleshooting comparisons, not a guarantee that a particular mode will fix the symptom.
Also distinguish a change in visual quality from a change in performance. If disabling an upscaler removes blur but the game still moves smoothly, that points toward an image-quality preference for that title and mode. If disabling it removes hitching, frame delivery or system behavior deserves attention. If neither symptom changes, the toggle may not be the cause; return to the display branch if the issue is external-only, or continue with updates and title-specific checks.
How do I tell whether the problem is stutter or image quality?
Use the symptom that changes when you toggle the setting, not the label of the setting, to decide what to investigate next. Uneven motion points first to frame delivery; persistent softness or trails with otherwise smooth motion points first to the game’s image reconstruction choices.

| What you see | First comparison | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Brief pauses, hitching, or uneven movement | Compare performance-monitor frame behavior with the upscaler on and off in the same scene. | If frame delivery is uneven, reduce demanding game settings and retest; average FPS by itself may hide a long frame. |
| Trailing or doubled-looking edges behind motion | Replay the same movement with the game’s upscaler disabled, then test another available in-game mode. | If trails change but frame delivery stays smooth, the rendering mode is a useful lead for image-quality troubleshooting. The comparison does not establish a universal ghosting cause. |
| Soft detail or blurry text | Compare the current mode with the prior setting or native rendering, holding the scene and display constant. | A clear difference implicates the chosen scaling configuration for that game and scene; test its available quality settings individually. |
| Only an external screen looks wrong | Compare the built-in screen, then check external-display processing and connection settings. | A difference limited to the TV or monitor makes the external display path a stronger lead than the built-in-screen upscaler. |
These distinctions help choose the next test, not diagnose a hardware failure on their own. Ghosting is especially easy to misattribute: a trail seen in one title with one setting does not establish whether the cause is the game’s rendering mode, the display path, or something else. First see whether the same motion looks different with the upscaler disabled, then compare the built-in and external screens if relevant.
Why can a game stutter when its average FPS looks stable?
Averages smooth over individual frames. Valve’s performance-monitor guidance explains that one frame that takes much longer than the others can create visible stutter or input latency even when the game frequently runs at a steady frame rate.
While reproducing the hitch, use Steam’s in-game performance monitor and pay attention to its frame-rate and minimum/frame information, rather than judging smoothness from the average alone. If the frame behavior is uneven, lower demanding in-game graphics settings and repeat the same test. If the hitch stops, restore settings one at a time to find which demand is relevant.
Do not assume upscaling must improve performance. The cited Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance notes a performance cost for its FSR 2.2 option, so the effect depends on the game and configuration. The useful result is what your controlled comparison shows, not a general promise that an upscaler raises FPS.
For a useful before-and-after check, watch the same short stretch of gameplay rather than relying on a single number after a menu change. A stable average can coexist with one conspicuously slow frame, so note whether the monitor’s frame behavior changes at the moment you feel the hitch. If the game is uneven with the upscaler both on and off, test lower demanding graphics settings and check for game and SteamOS updates instead of assuming that the upscaler explains every pause.
Could a SteamOS update or Beta channel be involved?
Yes, in a specific documented case. Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta notes dated August 7, 2026 reported degraded performance in some cases when composition was required, giving FSR being enabled as an example; the same notes said the issue was fixed in stable SteamOS 3.8.16.
That version note is not proof that every stutter after enabling FSR has the same cause, and it does not establish that changing update channels will fix an unrelated problem. Check the installed SteamOS version and whether the Deck is on Stable, Beta, or Preview before interpreting the note. Apply available system updates and restart, as Valve recommends in its Steam Deck software troubleshooting guidance.

Use the version note as a reason to check your software state, not as an automatic instruction to change channels. The report is tied to a particular Beta version and to cases where composition is required; it does not show that every Deck on Beta, every game using an upscaler, or every instance of blurry output is affected. If you update, restart and repeat the same test scene so the comparison remains meaningful.
If the problem persists, temporarily exit or disable third-party apps installed in Desktop Mode and retest. Valve includes that step among its initial troubleshooting suggestions for unstable applications. Restarting and testing without those apps are reversible checks, not a reason to remove software permanently without evidence that it matters.
What should I do if the issue happens only on a TV or monitor?
Follow the external-display branch only when the built-in screen is unaffected or the problem changes distinctly when you connect an external display. Valve recommends enabling a connected display’s Gaming Mode when available and turning off motion smoothing or other processing that can add latency or cause other issues.
- Compare the built-in display. Reproduce the same scene on the Deck screen and external screen. This establishes whether the symptom is limited to the external path.
- Check the display’s picture processing. Enable Gaming Mode if offered, and disable motion smoothing or other post-processing features for the test.
- Verify the signal settings. Check the selected input, display mode, resolution, and refresh rate against what the display and dock support.
- Reseat or swap the connection if needed. If the issue remains external-only, try a known-good cable or another input when available. Cable capability can depend on the selected mode and data rate, so a connection change is a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Check the dock and display limits. Consider dock firmware and the display’s supported modes if the external setup does not behave as expected.
Do not buy a replacement cable, dock, or screen solely because an image artifact appeared after enabling upscaling. First establish that the problem follows the external connection or a particular component; Valve’s external-display guidance treats cable, input, dock, and display checks as troubleshooting for that scenario.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This branch is conditional: a cable or input swap is useful when the symptom is confined to an external display, not a general remedy for a soft or ghosted image on the Deck’s built-in screen. Similarly, display processing is worth testing when the connected screen offers Gaming Mode or motion smoothing controls; do not treat those controls as required fixes for every game.
Should I change the Steam Deck refresh rate?
Only investigate refresh rate when you are actually changing that setting or checking external-display compatibility; it is not a general explanation or fix for ghosting and blur. Valve lists the built-in LCD display’s maximum as 60 Hz and the OLED display’s maximum as 90 Hz. Selecting an app refresh rate above the model’s cap does not improve performance.
So, use the model’s display limit as a boundary when reviewing refresh settings, not as a target to exceed. The LCD and OLED have different caps, and a setting above the relevant built-in display’s maximum is not a performance shortcut. If the issue is a soft image or motion trail, return to the upscaler and display comparisons rather than changing refresh rate without a reason.

What if only one game still has the problem?
If the issue remains confined to one title after the setting comparisons and system checks, treat it as potentially game-specific. Valve’s software troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for game updates and Steam Deck Verified status, trying lower graphics settings for performance problems, and consulting the title’s compatibility information or developer support for app-specific issues.

Keep a short record of the game version, selected upscaler and mode, render resolution, SteamOS version/channel, display used, and whether disabling the setting changes the symptom. That gives the developer a reproducible description instead of an ambiguous report that the game “looks bad” or “stutters.”
When you contact support, describe the symptom and the comparison that reproduces it: for example, whether trails appear only with one game-level mode, whether the hitch remains when that mode is off, and whether the built-in screen is affected. Include the Deck’s software channel and version because a version-specific system issue and a title-only issue lead to different next steps. Check the game for updates before escalating, since Valve’s software guidance includes updates and Deck Verified status among the checks for game performance problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which troubleshooting path should I use?
Use this order to avoid changing unrelated settings. Stop when a controlled test identifies a setting or branch that consistently changes the symptom.
- Establish whether the symptom appears on the built-in display, an external display, or both.
- Revert the last upscaling change and compare the same scene.
- Separate the game’s upscaler from SteamOS scaling; test each independently.
- For stutter, inspect frame behavior in the performance monitor and lower demanding settings if delivery is uneven.
- Install available SteamOS updates, restart, and test without third-party Desktop Mode apps if instability remains.
- For external-only problems, test Gaming Mode, post-processing, mode/settings, and the connection path.
- If it is still limited to one game, check its update and compatibility information and contact the developer for title-specific help.
Keep the diagnostic sequence proportionate to the symptom. If the built-in screen is the only affected display, start with the game and SteamOS scaling controls rather than buying or swapping external hardware. If motion is smooth but the image is soft, prioritize the available image-quality modes. If the complaint is a hitch, use frame behavior and performance checks; a visual comparison alone cannot establish that frame delivery improved.
What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not change several controls together. Altering resolution, game upscaling, SteamOS scaling, and refresh rate in one pass makes the result hard to interpret.
- Do not judge smoothness only by average FPS. Valve notes that a single long frame can be visible even when the average appears steady.
- Do not assume every game has the same upscaler options. The FSR 2.2 example is specific to Baldur’s Gate 3; menus and trade-offs differ by title.
- Do not jump from an artifact to a hardware diagnosis. First compare the same scene with the setting off and determine whether the symptom occurs on the built-in screen, external display, or both.
- Do not buy a dock or cable without an external-display reason. Check the signal path only if the issue appears on the TV or monitor or changes when connected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use FSR and SteamOS scaling at the same time?
Whether both controls are available and how they interact depends on the game and SteamOS configuration. For troubleshooting, change one at a time so you can identify which setting correlates with the symptom.
Does ghosting mean my Steam Deck screen is damaged?
Not by itself. A trail that appears only in one game or only with a particular rendering mode is not enough to establish a hardware fault; compare the same scene with that mode disabled and check whether the built-in screen and external display behave differently.

Will upscaling always make a game run faster on Steam Deck?
No. Its impact varies by title and settings, and a developer’s guidance for one game cannot establish the result for another. Compare frame behavior in the specific game instead of assuming the feature raises performance.
Should I switch from SteamOS Beta to Stable to fix stuttering?
Do not switch channels on the basis of the symptom alone. First check your installed version and compare it with Valve’s version-specific notes; the documented composition issue was tied to certain cases and the notes identified a stable fix.
Should I buy a new cable or dock if upscaling looks blurry?
Not unless the problem points to an external-display connection. First compare the Deck’s built-in display with the TV or monitor; a cable, input, or dock check is relevant when the issue occurs only on, or changes with, the external setup.
What information should I include in a game support request?
Include the title and game version, the selected upscaler and mode, render resolution, SteamOS version and channel, which display you used, and whether turning the upscaler off changes the symptom. A repeatable scene and symptom description are more useful than a general report that the image looks wrong.
Is changing refresh rate a fix for ghosting or blur?
Not generally. Refresh rate is worth checking when you are changing that setting or troubleshooting external-display compatibility, but Valve’s cited display limits do not make refresh rate a general fix for trails or softness.
The Bottom Line
Start by reproducing the issue in the same scene with the new upscaling setting off, then test game-level and SteamOS scaling separately. Use the performance monitor for stutter, image-quality comparisons for blur or trails, and external-display checks only when the symptom points to a TV or monitor. Update and restart, account for the installed SteamOS version and channel, and avoid buying hardware without evidence of an external connection problem.
