1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStuttering, excessive heat, and a loud fan often have the same root cause: the handheld is struggling to move heat or is using a power and thermal profile that does not fit the game. Start by reproducing the problem consistently, then update Windows and the manufacturer’s software, select an intentional performance profile, restore clear airflow, and only afterward tune graphics and display settings. A fan that ramps up during demanding play can be normal; a fan that stops, grinds, or accompanies repeated thermal performance drops is not.
Start by separating normal load from a fault
Run the same game or workload long enough to reproduce the issue. Record whether the handheld is plugged in or on battery, which thermal profile is selected, whether the power adapter is recognized, and what happens when the stutter begins. Watch for a fan ramp followed by a sudden frame-rate collapse, a gradual decline as the session gets hotter, or stutter that appears even on the desktop.

- Fan rises, then performance suddenly falls: investigate thermal or power limiting before lowering every graphics setting.
- Fan stays at maximum at idle: look for background activity, a stuck control profile, blocked airflow, sensor trouble, or a hardware fault.
- Fan stops, grinds, scrapes, or rattles: stop treating the problem as a software setting and arrange service.
- Stutter occurs only in one game or one display mode: focus on that game’s graphics, window mode, frame pacing, refresh rate, and variable-refresh settings after the system checks are complete.
There is no single safe temperature, fan-noise level, or cooling-stand performance gain that applies to every Windows handheld. Chassis design, firmware, processor, ambient temperature, game engine, battery state, and adapter all change the result.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Install Windows, BIOS, chipset, graphics, firmware, and vendor control-software updates.
- Choose a deliberate thermal profile in the manufacturer’s handheld application.
- Set Windows Power mode deliberately rather than leaving it to an accidental state.
- Clear every intake and exhaust opening and remove obvious airflow restrictions.
- Close unnecessary background work and inspect Task Manager while the game is running.
- Tune frame caps, refresh rate, VRR, windowed-game options, and per-game graphics one change at a time.
- Escalate to manufacturer support when cooling or performance remains abnormal.
Change one variable at a time and retest the same scene. Changing a profile, driver, frame cap, and upscaling option together makes it impossible to identify the cause.
Install updates before changing graphics settings
Updates are the least invasive fix and should be first. Microsoft notes that Windows updates and optional driver updates can include performance improvements. Lenovo’s gaming-performance guidance likewise starts with current drivers. For a ROG handheld, use the manufacturer’s control application and support pages to check BIOS, chipset, graphics, firmware, and Armoury Crate SE updates. On a Legion Go, use Lenovo’s support tools for the current BIOS, graphics, chipset, firmware, and control software. Comparable Windows handhelds have their own update utilities, so use the package intended for the exact model.
Update Windows
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Install available quality and feature updates, then restart even if Windows does not insist on an immediate reboot.
- Open the optional-update area when it is offered and review driver updates. Install only packages that match the handheld’s hardware.
Update the handheld firmware and drivers
- Open the device manufacturer’s support or control application.
- Install the current BIOS, chipset, graphics driver, firmware, and performance-control software for the exact model and operating-system edition.
- Restart after each update group if requested, then reproduce the original game scenario.
Do not interrupt a BIOS or firmware update, and keep the device on reliable external power when the manufacturer’s instructions require it. If the issue began immediately after a failed update, skip repeated experiments and contact support.

Choose a thermal profile that matches the session
Most gaming handhelds expose performance modes in a vendor application. ASUS directs handheld owners to Armoury Crate SE for fan and performance controls. Lenovo documents Performance, Balance, Quiet, and Custom modes on Legion Go devices. The names and available wattage controls vary by model, but the trade-off is consistent: more sustained performance requires more power and normally creates more heat and fan noise.

| Profile | When it fits | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Plugged-in play when maximum sustained performance matters. | Highest power draw and usually the most fan noise. Lenovo describes this mode as intended for an electrical outlet when the user wants the best performance and does not mind some fan noise. |
| Balance | General play, especially when battery life and performance both matter. | A compromise between performance, battery use, and acoustics. |
| Quiet | Low-demand games, menus, travel, or situations where noise matters most. | Lower power and fan noise, with less performance headroom. |
| Custom | Users who can change one power or thermal value at a time and measure the result. | Flexible, but an overly low limit can look like stutter or a sudden FPS collapse. |
Do not copy a wattage or temperature target from another handheld. Lenovo states that maximum performance, power consumption, and heat-sink fan speed vary between thermal modes, and the same mode name can behave differently across hardware and firmware.
Confirm the profile is actually active
After selecting a mode, launch the game again and check whether the control application still shows that mode. A profile can change when the device switches between battery and AC power, when a game-specific rule is applied, or after an update. If a low-power Custom or Quiet mode causes the FPS collapse, switch to Balance for battery play or Performance for plugged-in play and retest.
Set Windows Power mode intentionally
Windows offers Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Microsoft describes Best performance as maximizing performance; it also uses more power and can make the handheld warmer. A vendor profile and Windows Power mode can both influence behavior, so check both rather than assuming the handheld application alone controls the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Choose Best performance for a plugged-in test when you are diagnosing performance drops.
- Use Balanced when you want a compromise, or Best power efficiency for light workloads and longer battery life.
- Repeat the same game test and note whether the stutter follows the power-mode change.
Best performance is not a universal cure. If it only makes the fan louder without removing the stutter, return to a mode appropriate for the session and continue with airflow, drivers, and display checks.

Restore airflow before buying accessories
Blocked vents can create both symptoms at once: the device gets hotter, the fan accelerates, and the processor or graphics system may reduce performance. ASUS identifies dust, hair, and debris blocking vents or fans as causes of inadequate cooling and performance problems. Lenovo likewise says to keep bottom intake and exhaust openings unobstructed.
Quick airflow checklist
- Play on a hard, stable surface rather than a bed, blanket, or other fabric that can cover the intake.
- Keep fingers, cases, docks, and cables away from intake and exhaust openings.
- Inspect every grille for visible dust, hair, or debris.
- Check that a stand or dock is not pressing against a vent.
- Listen for airflow when the device is hot. A fan that does not operate under sustained load needs service.
Clean without creating a new problem
Power the handheld down before cleaning and follow the model’s service and cleaning guidance. An electronics cleaning kit or compressed-air duster is appropriate only when dust or debris is part of the diagnosis. Use short, controlled bursts, avoid forcing debris deeper into the chassis, and check warranty instructions before removing a panel. Do not give model-agnostic disassembly instructions: internal fan access, battery handling, and warranty terms differ substantially.
Find background activity that competes with the game
A game can stutter even when its graphics settings are reasonable if another process consumes CPU, GPU, memory, or disk bandwidth. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends resource monitoring and reducing unnecessary background processes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU while the stutter is occurring.
- Close only applications you recognize and do not need for the session. Avoid ending Windows, driver, or vendor-control processes blindly.
- Check for downloads, game updates, cloud synchronization, browser tabs, recording software, launchers, and overlays competing with the game.
- Retest after the activity has stopped. If the problem disappears, re-enable or schedule the background task instead of permanently disabling a required service.
Task Manager is also useful for distinguishing a thermal symptom from a resource conflict: a sudden CPU or disk spike without a corresponding change in game load points toward background work, while a performance collapse after heat and fan speed rise points toward power or thermal limits.

Check display and frame pacing after system basics
Do not lower every graphics option before confirming that the system is operating in the intended power and thermal state. Once updates, profiles, airflow, and background activity are under control, test display-related causes in a controlled order.
Use a stable frame-rate cap
If average FPS looks acceptable but motion feels uneven, test a stable frame-rate cap below the display’s practical maximum. A cap can reduce swings between frames, but the best value depends on the game, driver, refresh rate, and power budget. Change the cap alone, replay the same scene, and compare frame pacing rather than relying only on the highest instantaneous FPS.
Verify refresh rate and VRR
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Confirm that the selected refresh rate matches the panel and the mode you intend to use.
- If the handheld supports variable refresh rate (VRR), test with VRR enabled and disabled. VRR can adapt refresh rate to changing frame output, but an interaction with a particular game or driver may feel uneven.
Microsoft notes that Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can sometimes limit a game’s apparent maximum refresh rate. If a game is capped unexpectedly, disable DRR for that test and compare results.
Test Windows 11 windowed-game optimization
For stutter limited to borderless or windowed play, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game’s per-app options, and test the Windows 11 windowed-game optimization setting. Microsoft says this feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games and permits graphics-performance preferences per app. It is not a universal fix, so keep the setting that produces steadier frame delivery on the affected title.

Change enhancements one at a time
Test overlays, frame generation, resolution scaling, and other driver or game enhancements individually. A setting that helps one game can add latency, uneven pacing, or driver-specific problems in another. Record the original value so you can revert cleanly.
When a cooling stand helps—and when it does not
A cooling stand is optional support, not a replacement for clear vents or a working fan. Lenovo recommends a cooling stand, preferably an active model with its own fan, while still requiring unobstructed intake and exhaust openings.
Consider an active cooling stand when the vents are already clear and the handheld remains hot during long, plugged-in sessions. It may improve the air reaching the intake, but the reviewed guidance provides no universal temperature reduction or FPS increase. Test the same game, profile, and ambient conditions with and without the stand before deciding whether it is worthwhile.
Do not use a stand to mask a blocked vent, a fan that is not spinning, or a grinding bearing. Those conditions require cleaning or service, not more airflow hardware.
Recognize a hardware or service problem
Contact the manufacturer’s support service when any of these conditions applies:
- The fan does not operate when the handheld is hot.
- The fan develops grinding, scraping, rattling, or another new mechanical sound.
- The device overheats at idle or during a light workload.
- Performance repeatedly collapses after current Windows, BIOS, firmware, chipset, graphics, and control-software updates.
- Vents are clear, profiles are sensible, and background activity is under control, yet temperatures and stutter remain abnormal.
- The issue began after liquid exposure, impact, or a failed update.
ASUS directs users toward additional troubleshooting and repair support when BIOS, Windows packages, and drivers do not resolve overheating or fan issues. Lenovo’s performance guidance likewise supports escalation after software and airflow checks fail. Back up important saves and personal data before sending the handheld for service, and describe the exact game, power state, profile, adapter, symptoms, and steps that reproduce the fault.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Assuming loud means broken: demanding games can make a healthy fan louder because it is moving more air as CPU and GPU temperatures rise.
- Covering the intake with fabric: this can turn an ordinary load into a heat and throttling problem.
- Changing every setting at once: you lose the ability to identify whether the cause was power, airflow, a driver, or display timing.
- Using a random charger: a USB-C PD charger is appropriate only after confirming the exact model’s required wattage and USB Power Delivery profile.
- Applying someone else’s temperature or wattage target: handheld cooling systems and firmware limits are not universal.
- Opening the chassis immediately: disassembly can damage the device or affect warranty coverage; follow model-specific service instructions.
- Buying a stand before checking vents: an accessory cannot repair a failed fan or remove dust packed inside the airflow path.
A practical decision path
- Reproduce: use the same game scene and note AC power, battery state, profile, adapter recognition, fan behavior, and the moment stutter begins.
- Update: install Windows and optional driver updates, then the model’s BIOS, chipset, graphics, firmware, and control-software updates.
- Profile: test Performance while plugged in, Balance for a compromise, and Quiet only for low-demand play; verify the setting remains active.
- Power: use Windows Best performance for a controlled plugged-in test, then choose Balanced or Best power efficiency when appropriate.
- Airflow: remove fabric and obstructions, inspect vents, and clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Background tasks: use Task Manager to identify CPU, GPU, memory, or disk competition.
- Display: test a stable frame cap, confirm refresh rate and VRR behavior, and evaluate Windows 11 windowed-game optimization for affected DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 titles.
- Accessory: consider an active cooling stand only after the basic cooling path is clear and functional.
- Service: escalate persistent overheating, non-operating or mechanically noisy fans, repeated thermal drops, or damage-related symptoms.
