If Windows says an application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect, sxstrace.exe is usually not the file you need to replace. It is a built-in Windows diagnostic command that records the failed assembly binding so you can identify the missing or mismatched Visual C++ runtime, application manifest, version, or processor architecture. Run a trace, read the parsed result, install the runtime it names from Microsoft, then repair the application. If system files may also be damaged, use DISM and SFC; use a clean boot only to isolate a third-party conflict.
What is sxstrace.exe, and what does this error mean?
sxstrace.exe is included with Windows for diagnosing side-by-side activation problems. Microsoft’s command reference describes it as a tool that “Diagnoses side-by-side problems.” Side-by-side (often abbreviated SxS) activation is the process Windows uses to select the assemblies and runtime components an application declares in its manifest. When the declaration cannot be satisfied, Windows stops the application before its main window appears.

The message commonly reads: “The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.” The wording points to a dependency or manifest-binding failure, not to a normal application crash. A program may be missing a Visual C++ Redistributable, using the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit package, carrying a damaged manifest, or relying on a runtime that was removed or incompletely installed.
The executable itself is normally a Windows component. Do not download a replacement sxstrace.exe from a file-sharing site, rename another executable, or replace the copy in C:WindowsSystem32. The trace is evidence used to choose the repair; it is not the repairable dependency.

Is sxstrace.exe safe to run?
Yes, when launched from an elevated Command Prompt on a normal Windows installation, it is a diagnostic utility rather than a cleaner, optimizer, or malware-removal program. It writes an event trace to a file you specify and then converts that trace to readable text. The text can contain application names, installation paths, and version information, so review it before sharing it publicly.
A side-by-side error is not proof that Windows is infected. It is a startup activation failure. If a security product reports that an unrelated file is malicious, handle that alert through the security product’s normal quarantine and support process rather than deleting system components to make the SxS message disappear.
What should I check before starting?
- Write down the exact application name, edition, and version, plus whether the failure began after an update, reinstall, or Windows change.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. Tracing and system repair commands need elevation.
- Save work and close other applications. The trace should cover one reproduction of the failure, not a long session containing unrelated launches.
- Keep the application’s installer or publisher download available in case repair requires a reinstall.
- Do not uninstall every Visual C++ package pre-emptively. Several versions can coexist, and the trace should determine which one the application requests.
You can also inspect the Application log in Event Viewer. Press Win, type Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application, and look for a recent event whose source is SideBySide. Its component and version details can help you recognize the same dependency that appears in the trace.
How do I capture a side-by-side trace with sxstrace?
Use an administrator Command Prompt and reproduce the failure while tracing is active. The commands below use files in the current Command Prompt directory; using an absolute folder such as C:Temp is also fine if that folder already exists.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Start the trace by entering:
sxstrace trace -logfile:sxstrace.etlLeave this window open. Windows may display a message that tracing has started.
- Launch the application that produces the side-by-side message. Reproduce the failure once, then close the error dialog.
- Return to the elevated Command Prompt and stop tracing:
sxstrace stoptraceIf the prompt is still waiting for input and your build does not respond to
stoptrace, pressCtrl+Cafter the reproduction has completed. - Convert the binary event trace into readable text:
sxstrace parse -logfile:sxstrace.etl -outfile:sxstrace.txt - Open the resulting
sxstrace.txtin Notepad. If you used a different folder, open the files from that folder. Keep the.etlfile until you have confirmed the text contains the failed activation.
The command reference also supports an optional -filter parameter. You normally do not need it for one failed launch; first obtain an unfiltered trace so that the complete binding chain is available if the first lines are ambiguous.
How do I read sxstrace.txt?
Read the entries around the failure, not just the first warning. A useful trace normally identifies the application, the assembly or runtime name, the requested version, and an architecture. Match those fields exactly when choosing a repair.

Missing assembly or runtime
Lines that say an assembly could not be found, could not be resolved, or failed to load indicate that Windows cannot locate a component declared by the application. Visual C++ runtime names often include a year or a version family. Use the complete name from the trace rather than guessing from the application’s age.
Architecture mismatch
The trace may identify x86, x64, or arm64. This is significant: a 32-bit application can require the x86 redistributable even when it is running on 64-bit Windows. Installing only x64 does not satisfy an x86 dependency. An ARM-based Windows device may need an arm64 package for a native ARM application, while an emulated 32-bit application can still request x86.
Manifest or version binding
If the text names a manifest, policy, or version conflict rather than a missing runtime, the application installation may be damaged or may contain an incompatible private assembly. Save the trace for the application publisher if a reinstall does not correct it; changing registry values or copying DLLs from another computer can create a different binding problem.
Reading paths and timestamps
Paths show which application and component Windows attempted to load. Timestamps help separate the current launch from older failed attempts. If the file contains many unrelated events, delete or rename the old trace, start a new one, and reproduce only the target failure.
How do I install or repair the Visual C++ Redistributable?
Use the runtime and architecture named by the trace. Microsoft’s current troubleshooting guidance recommends the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable, with architecture-specific packages, and says to use Microsoft-signed installers. A newer supported package may solve a current dependency, but an older application can still require a particular runtime family; follow the name in the trace or the application vendor’s requirements.
- Note the requested architecture and version from
sxstrace.txt. - Obtain the corresponding Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official download pages. Avoid repackaged installers and DLL-download sites.
- Run the installer as administrator. If it offers Repair, choose that for an existing installation; otherwise choose Install.
- Restart Windows when the installer requests it, even if the application appears to launch before restarting.
- Launch the application again. If the same message appears, capture a fresh trace rather than assuming the first runtime choice was correct.
| Trace architecture | Package to match | Typical situation |
|---|---|---|
| x86 | 32-bit Visual C++ Redistributable | A 32-bit application, including one running on 64-bit Windows |
| x64 | 64-bit Visual C++ Redistributable | A native 64-bit application |
| arm64 | ARM64 Visual C++ Redistributable | A native ARM64 application on compatible Windows hardware |
Installing both x86 and x64 packages can be appropriate when you use separate 32-bit and 64-bit applications, but it is not a substitute for reading the trace. Do not remove an existing runtime merely because another version is being installed; applications may depend on different versions side by side.

What if the Visual C++ installer fails?
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends collecting installer logs, running the installer as administrator, applying Windows updates, and checking for interference from security software or locked files. A failure to install is a separate problem from the original SxS error, so record its exact message.
- Close the affected application and any installer or updater that may have a file open.
- Restart Windows and retry the Microsoft installer with elevation.
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and retry if the installer reports servicing or prerequisite issues.
- If the installer still fails, preserve its logs and the
sxstrace.txtfile for Microsoft or the application publisher’s support team. - Do not disable security protection permanently. If a security product is blocking a legitimate installer, use its documented temporary exception procedure and restore normal protection immediately afterward.
How do I repair the affected application?
If the trace points to the application’s own manifest or private files, repair the installation before attempting broader Windows repairs. A repair changes only that application and is therefore easier to reverse than registry edits or manual DLL replacement.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find the affected application, open its menu or advanced options, and choose Repair if that option is provided.
- Restart the application and verify that the same launch path now works.
- If no repair option exists or the error remains, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. Use the edition and architecture intended for your Windows installation.
- Apply the application’s updates only after it launches successfully, then test again if an update changes its runtime requirements.
Some installers bundle a private runtime instead of using the system redistributable. In that case, repairing or reinstalling the application is more likely to restore the correct manifest and files than installing unrelated runtime packages.
Should I run DISM and SFC?
Use these commands when the runtime and application repair do not resolve the error, or when the trace and Event Viewer indicate damaged Windows component files. They are escalation steps for system-file corruption; they do not identify which Visual C++ architecture an application needs.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run the component-store repair and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - After DISM completes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows, then launch the application again.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. The percentage can pause for a while, especially during component repair. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete, record the exact result, apply pending Windows updates, restart, and run the relevant command again. Persistent servicing errors belong with Microsoft support or an administrator who can inspect the component logs; repeatedly deleting files from system folders can make recovery harder.
How can a clean boot reveal a third-party conflict?
If the application works in one startup environment but fails during normal startup, a third-party service or startup item may be interfering with activation. A clean boot is a temporary diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting.

- Press
Win+R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services prevents you from disabling core Windows services in this test.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup entries, then close Task Manager.
- In System Configuration, choose OK and restart. Test the application once.
- If it launches, re-enable services and startup entries in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting item is identified.
- Return to
msconfig, choose Normal startup, and restart when testing is complete.
Do not leave essential security or hardware services disabled after the test. If the error persists in a clean boot, the cause is more likely the runtime, application files, or Windows components than a startup conflict.
Which fix should I try first?
The trace-led sequence minimizes risk because each action follows evidence from the failed activation. The table compares the practical choices by the criteria that matter most.
| Fix | Evidence strength | Scope | Risk and reversibility | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capture and parse sxstrace | Direct evidence from the failed binding | One launch failure | Low; creates log files only | Trace names the assembly, version, or architecture |
| Install or repair matching Visual C++ package | Strong when the trace names that runtime | Applications using that runtime | Low when downloaded from Microsoft; packages can coexist | Application launches after restart and a fresh test |
| Repair or reinstall the application | Strong when the trace points to its manifest or private files | One application | Usually reversible; reinstall may remove local settings | Repair completes and the original launch path works |
| DISM followed by SFC | Useful when Windows component corruption is suspected | Windows-wide system files | Higher scope; allow commands to finish | Commands complete and the application launches after restart |
| Clean boot | Useful only when startup context changes the result | Third-party services and startup items | Temporary but disruptive; restore Normal startup | Failure disappears in clean boot and returns with one item |
What should I avoid when fixing sxstrace errors?
- Do not download a standalone
sxstrace.exeor a DLL with the same name. The Windows copy is the diagnostic component; replacing it does not supply the missing application runtime. - Do not copy DLLs from another computer. Version, architecture, signing, and manifest relationships must match.
- Do not install random Visual C++ packages until the trace identifies a need. Unrelated packages add clutter without fixing the binding failure.
- Do not edit the registry to bypass a manifest error. Registry changes can affect other applications and are difficult to audit.
- Do not stop DISM or SFC because the progress percentage appears frozen. Wait for completion and record the final message.
- Do not leave a clean-boot configuration enabled after troubleshooting. Restore normal startup so required services and security software run normally.
How do I verify that the problem is actually fixed?
Restart Windows after a runtime repair, application reinstall, or system-file repair. Launch the program from the same shortcut, file association, or game launcher that originally failed, because a different executable may use a different architecture or manifest.
- The application opens without the side-by-side dialog.
- A fresh Event Viewer search does not show a new SideBySide error at the test time.
- If you run another trace, it no longer ends with the same unresolved assembly or version binding.
- The application’s normal features work, rather than merely displaying its first window before failing later.
If the trace continues to name the same dependency after the matching runtime and an application repair, send the trace, the application version, Windows edition, and architecture to the application publisher. Those details let its support team distinguish a missing redistributable from an incorrectly authored manifest.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run sxstrace from PowerShell instead of Command Prompt?
Yes. PowerShell can launch the same executable with the same arguments, but an elevated window is still required for reliable tracing. If a relative path makes the output hard to find, use full paths for both the ETL and text files.
Why did the error appear immediately after an application update?
An update can change the application manifest or switch the required runtime architecture without changing the wording of the Windows dialog. Capture a new trace after the update; an older trace may describe a dependency that the previous build used.
