How to Fix the 0X800070422 Installer Code (and Verify Whether It Is Really 0x80070422)

If you meant 0x80070422, Microsoft associates that code with a Windows Update service that is disabled or stopped. The code in this title, 0X800070422, is different: it contains an extra zero, and Microsoft’s documented references do not establish it as an alias. Copy the value from the original dialog, note which installer displayed it, and only use the Windows Update steps below when the dialog actually shows 0x80070422 in a Windows Update or Windows upgrade context.

What does the 0X800070422 code mean?

There is an important spelling issue before any repair. Windows error codes are hexadecimal strings, so letter case is not significant, but every digit is. The two values are not identical:

Displayed value What Microsoft documents Safe interpretation
0X800070422 No equivalence is established in the cited Microsoft references. Verify the original dialog and the application that produced it before changing services.
0x80070422 Windows Update service is disabled or stopped; Microsoft Learn labels it ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Use the Windows Update service repair sequence when the error appeared in that context.

Microsoft Learn describes the documented code this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” Microsoft Support also describes it as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped,” while its upgrade guidance uses the wording “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” Those descriptions apply to 0x80070422 in Windows Update and Windows upgrade troubleshooting, not automatically to the longer string in the title.

How should I verify the code and installer context?

Do this check before opening Services. A code copied from memory, a search result, or a cropped screenshot can lead to the wrong repair.

  1. Copy the complete value. Include the 0x prefix, every zero, and every other hexadecimal digit. If the dialog has a copy button, use it; otherwise transcribe the code character by character.
  2. Record the program name. Write down whether the message came from Windows Update, Windows Setup, Microsoft Store, or a separate third-party installer. The Microsoft procedures cited here address Windows Update and Windows upgrade or installation troubleshooting.
  3. Record when it appeared. Note whether it occurred while checking for updates, downloading, installing, upgrading Windows, or installing an unrelated application. This context determines whether the Windows Update service is a plausible cause.
  4. Keep the original wording. Save the full message, not just the number. A sentence saying that a service is disabled is more useful than the code alone when you need support.

Use this decision guide:

What you see What to do next
0x80070422 while using Windows Update Check the Windows Update service, then use the Windows Update troubleshooter if needed.
0x80070422 during a Windows upgrade or installation Enable and start Windows Update, then follow Microsoft’s upgrade troubleshooting and component-reset guidance if the failure continues.
0X800070422 or another value Do not assume the Windows Update diagnosis. Identify the exact code and the installer’s own documentation or support path.
A third-party installer displays any code Treat the application and its full message as the primary context. The steps below are not verified for that installer merely because its number looks similar.

How do I fix 0x80070422 when it appears in Windows Update?

Microsoft’s direct repair is to enable the Windows Update service, start it if necessary, restart the computer, and check for updates again. These steps change one Windows service and should be attempted before broader component repairs.

1. Open the Services console

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter services.msc and select OK. Windows opens the Services management console.

2. Set Windows Update to Automatic

  1. Scroll to Windows Update in the list. Selecting the list and typing the first letters can help you reach it.
  2. Open its Properties. The properties dialog shows the current state and startup setting.
  3. Set Startup type to Automatic. This allows Windows to start the service as part of normal update activity instead of leaving it disabled.

3. Start the service if it is stopped

  1. Check the service status in the same properties dialog.
  2. If the status is Stopped, select Start. If Windows reports an error, copy that complete message; it identifies a separate blocker that the basic procedure does not explain.
  3. Select Apply, then OK to save the setting and close the dialog.

4. Restart and retry Windows Update

  1. Restart the PC rather than simply closing Services. A restart gives Windows a clean opportunity to load the changed service configuration.
  2. Open Settings, go to Windows Update, and select the control to check for updates. Windows 11 and Windows 10 both expose Windows Update from Settings, although the surrounding navigation can differ by release.
  3. If the update now checks or installs normally, the disabled or stopped service was consistent with Microsoft’s documented explanation for 0x80070422.

Do not apply this sequence to the title’s longer value solely because the digits look similar. Microsoft’s documentation supports the diagnosis only for the exact, shorter code in the Windows Update context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the service is already enabled or will not start?

If Windows Update is already set to Automatic and running, or if Services refuses to start it, move to Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooting path instead of repeatedly changing the same setting.

When the service is already running

  • Confirm that the code is exactly 0x80070422, not 0X800070422 or another value.
  • Restart the PC once and retry the update check.
  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter described in the next section. It is Microsoft’s general diagnostic route for update failures that remain after the basic service check.

When Start is unavailable or produces an error

  • Copy the complete message shown by Services, including any additional error number.
  • Do not guess at registry edits or replace the service configuration with an unverified script. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish those as necessary for this code.
  • If the computer is managed by an employer, school, or another administrator, a policy or permission may prevent service changes. Contact the device administrator with the exact dialog text and the Services message.
  • If you control the PC and the service remains unavailable after the documented troubleshooting steps, use Microsoft support with the recorded code, Windows edition, and the time of failure.

How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?

Microsoft Support recommends its Windows Update troubleshooter for update problems. The exact Settings layout varies by Windows release, so use the search function if the labels are not in the same place as the examples below.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Use the Settings search box and enter troubleshoot, or open the section named System and then Troubleshoot on releases that provide that path.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters or the equivalent list of troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Follow the prompts, allow the diagnostic to complete, and apply any offered repair.
  6. Restart if prompted, then return to Windows Update and retry the operation.

If Settings does not show the same labels, searching for “Windows Update troubleshooter” within Settings is safer than downloading a third-party diagnostic. The troubleshooter is intended for Windows Update problems; it does not validate the title’s different code in an unrelated installer.

When should I clear the Windows Update cache?

Cache clearing is an escalation step, not the first response to a mistyped or unverified code. Microsoft’s update troubleshooting instructions include stopping Windows Update, clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting the service again. Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation guidance also lists resetting Windows Update components when 0x80070422 persists in that context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear the SoftwareDistribution contents using Services

  1. Open services.msc again.
  2. Locate Windows Update, open Properties, and select Stop. Wait for the status to show that it has stopped.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Clear the contents inside that folder as Microsoft’s procedure directs. Do not substitute a different Windows folder or remove unrelated files.
  5. Return to Services, open Windows Update, select Start, and apply the change.
  6. Restart the PC and check Windows Update again.

If Windows will not let you stop the service, access the folder, or start the service afterward, stop the procedure and keep the exact permission or error message. That result needs a version-specific or administrator-assisted resolution; it is not proof that the title’s longer code means the same thing.

Reset components only for a matching Windows Update failure

A full component reset changes more of the update system than clearing the cache. Use Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows version and for the Windows upgrade or installation context in which 0x80070422 was reported. Do not paste a script from an unrelated forum, and do not perform a component reset merely because a third-party installer displayed a similar-looking number.

What if the code came from another installer?

If the original dialog shows 0X800070422, or if the message came from an unrelated application, there is no documented basis in the cited Microsoft material for treating it as 0x80070422. Applying service changes could leave the actual installer problem untouched.

  1. Reopen the installer and capture the full error text exactly as displayed.
  2. Check the application’s own help or support documentation for that exact code and version.
  3. Note whether the installer is downloading updates, installing a Windows component, or deploying a standalone program. Similar hexadecimal-looking values can refer to different subsystems.
  4. If the application’s support team asks for logs, provide the original message and the time of failure rather than substituting the Windows Update interpretation.

Only return to the Windows Update procedure if the code is confirmed as 0x80070422 and the operation is actually Windows Update or a Windows upgrade/install workflow covered by Microsoft’s guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I confirm that the repair worked?

  • The Windows Update page completes a check without returning 0x80070422.
  • An update that previously failed progresses through download and installation.
  • The Windows Update service remains set to Automatic and shows a running state when you inspect it after the restart.
  • The same installer no longer displays the error, if the original operation was a Windows upgrade or installation rather than a separate application.

If the exact title string returns, do not count that as confirmation that the service fix failed or succeeded. First compare the newly displayed value with the original one and verify which program produced it.

Which mistakes should I avoid?

  • Dropping or adding a digit: 0X800070422 and 0x80070422 are different values.
  • Changing services before checking context: a third-party installer is not automatically a Windows Update failure.
  • Stopping at Startup type: Microsoft’s sequence also starts the service when it is stopped, applies the change, restarts the PC, and retries updates.
  • Jumping straight to cache deletion: use the service check and troubleshooter first; cache clearing is an escalation path.
  • Deleting unrelated Windows files: the documented cache step concerns the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, not arbitrary system folders.
  • Ignoring administrator controls: a managed device may prevent service changes, in which case the administrator needs the exact code and message.
  • Using an unverified script: Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish a generic script or registry edit as a required fix.
