0x800700 is not a complete SCCM error code. It is the beginning of an HRESULT, and the final two hexadecimal digits determine the problem. For example, 0x80070005 means access denied, 0x80070003 means a path was not found, 0x8007000D means invalid data, and 0x80070020 indicates a sharing violation. Do not apply a generic fix until you have copied the complete value, identified the SCCM workflow that failed, and read the matching log entries. The same prefix can appear during client setup, application deployment, an operating-system task sequence, or a software-update scan, and each case requires different evidence.
Why is 0x800700 not enough to diagnose an SCCM failure?
Configuration Manager (SCCM) reports many Windows HRESULT values in hexadecimal. The characters 0x800700 are only a prefix; the suffix identifies the Windows condition. A dialog that displays only the prefix may be truncating the message, while a log usually contains the full value and the operation that produced it.

| Complete value | Meaning | What to investigate first |
|---|---|---|
0x80070005 |
Access denied | The file, registry key, share, service, or task-sequence action named near the error |
0x80070003 |
Path not found | Executable, content path, drive letter, distribution-point location, or task-sequence variable |
0x8007000D |
Invalid data | Downloaded, cached, staged, or update data identified in the log |
0x80070020 |
Sharing violation | The process or filter driver holding the file open |
The workflow matters as much as the suffix. A permissions failure during an operating-system deployment is not repaired the same way as invalid data returned by a Windows Update Agent scan. Treat the code as a pointer to evidence, not as a one-click diagnosis.

How do I capture the complete SCCM error context?
Before changing permissions, deleting caches, or rebuilding an image, record enough context to reproduce the failure and correlate it with a log entry.
- Copy the entire HRESULT. Include every hexadecimal digit after
0x. If the screen shows only0x800700, open the related log or expand the error details. - Record the time. Use the device’s local time and note its time zone. Logs can contain entries from several retries, so a precise timestamp is essential.
- Identify the device and workflow. Note the computer name, collection, deployment or task-sequence name, application or update, and whether the failure occurred in Windows PE or the full Windows installation.
- Write down the exact step. For a task sequence, capture the step name. For an application, record the detection, download, install, or return-code phase. For a software update, record whether the failure occurred during scan, download, evaluation, or installation.
- Preserve the original message. Take a screenshot or copy the surrounding text before retrying. A retry can overwrite the most useful lines with a second failure.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends converting and correlating hexadecimal values with the surrounding log context. The same numeric value can be raised by different components, so the object named immediately before or after the HRESULT is often more useful than the code alone.

Where are the SCCM logs for an 0x800700 error?
Microsoft states that Configuration Manager client and site-server components record process information in individual log files. Start with the log belonging to the failed operation rather than opening every file in the directory.

|---|---|---|
| General client activity | C:WindowsCCMLogs; choose the component log associated with the action |

The Configuration Manager hand-off and the Windows Update Agent’s actual result |
Use CMTrace, OneTrace, or Support Center Log File Viewer to search for the complete HRESULT, the timestamp, and terms such as failed, denied, path, sharing, or return code. In a task sequence, remember that smsts.log moves as deployment progresses; a blank file in one location does not prove that no log exists.
How do I fix SCCM 0x80070005 (access denied)?
0x80070005 means that a Windows component or Configuration Manager action was refused access. The safe fix is to identify the denied object first, then correct only the account, ACL, service, or deployment configuration that needs changing.
Find the object that was denied
Search the relevant log around the failure time. Look for a filename, registry path, UNC share, service, package, or command immediately surrounding the HRESULT. Check whether the operation ran as the local system account, a domain user, a network-access account, or another service identity. A successful interactive test under your administrator account does not prove that the SCCM execution identity has access.

Check content and share permissions
- Confirm that the distribution point or source share is reachable from the affected device.
- Verify both share permissions and NTFS permissions; the more restrictive effective permission wins.
- Check that the account used to access source content is valid, not locked out, and allowed to read the specific directory.
- Review boundary-group and distribution-point assignment if the log shows an unexpected content location.
- Avoid granting broad administrator or full-control rights as a test. Record the original ACLs and apply the smallest change that allows the documented operation.
Check local services, registry, and security software
If the denied object is local, verify that the expected service is running and that its service account has the required rights. For a registry or system-file failure, inspect the exact key or file named in the log rather than resetting permissions on the entire operating-system directory. Security software or a policy can also block a script or executable; coordinate any exclusion or policy change with your security administrator and remove temporary exceptions after testing.
Do not confuse an access error with a missing path
A share that exists but cannot be read can look similar to a path problem. Use the log’s wording and the complete suffix: 0x80070005 points to authorization, while 0x80070003 points to a path that Windows cannot locate. Correcting the wrong one can hide the real fault and create a larger security or configuration problem.
How do I fix 0x80070005 when a task sequence fails?
Microsoft documents a specific operating-system-deployment case in which the “Setup Windows and ConfigMgr” portion fails with 80070005 because a custom SetupComplete.cmd remains in the image.
Check for a custom SetupComplete.cmd
Inspect the captured operating-system image and the task sequence for a custom SetupComplete.cmd. Windows Setup executes this file at a sensitive point in deployment. Commands that alter setup state, services, or permissions can interfere with the Configuration Manager client installation that follows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Apply the documented resolution
- Remove the custom
SetupComplete.cmdfrom the operating-system image, or add a task-sequence step that deletes it before the client-installation phase. - Move each required action from that script into normal, visible task-sequence steps. Give each action an explicit condition, account, and success code.
- Update the image or task-sequence content on the distribution points.
- Run the deployment again and inspect the phase-appropriate
smsts.logand client setup logs.
This resolution applies to the documented custom-script scenario. If no such file exists, use the log to identify the denied object instead of deleting unrelated setup files or changing system-wide permissions.
How do I fix SCCM 0x80070003 (path not found)?
0x80070003 means that Windows could not access a specified path. In Configuration Manager, the missing location may be local, on a distribution point, inside a mounted image, or represented by a task-sequence variable.

- Verify the exact path. Copy it from the log and check spelling, capitalization where relevant, quotation marks, and file extension.
- Check drive letters by phase. A drive letter available in full Windows may not exist in Windows PE, and a mapped user drive is normally unavailable to the local system account.
- Validate distribution-point content. Confirm that the package, application, boot image, or driver content is distributed to the device’s assigned distribution point and that the content version is current.
- Review task-sequence variables. A variable that expands to an empty or obsolete directory can create a valid-looking but nonexistent path.
- Test from the execution context. In Windows PE, test network access using the deployment environment and its credentials, not a later interactive session.
- Check removable or temporary media. A path that depends on a USB drive, temporary mount, or previous step may disappear after a restart.
Do not create an arbitrary directory merely to make the error disappear. If the log expects content that should have been downloaded, repair the content reference or distribution instead.
How do I fix 0x8007000D (invalid data) in SCCM?
0x8007000D indicates that a component received data it could not parse or use. The data may be a downloaded package, staged task-sequence content, metadata, or information returned by Windows Update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor applications and packages
- Use the deployment and content-transfer logs to identify the package, file, or source URL that produced the error.
- Compare the content version on the site with the version distributed to the affected distribution point.
- Refresh or redistribute the affected content, then allow the client to download a new copy.
- If the client repeatedly reuses a damaged local copy, follow your organization’s cache-cleanup procedure for that deployment and retry after the new content is available.
Redownload only after confirming the object and source in the log. Clearing every client cache can remove usable content and make later diagnosis harder.
For task-sequence media or images
Check the image, boot media, driver package, and task-sequence content versions. A partially updated image or mismatched media can stage data that later steps cannot interpret. Rebuild or recapture the affected content only after the log identifies it as the source of invalid data.
How do I fix 0x80070020 (sharing violation)?
0x80070020 means that another process or filter driver has the file open in a way that blocks the requested operation. Microsoft recommends a clean restart and Process Monitor investigation for the documented servicing scenario.
- Record the filename and operation from the log.
- Perform a clean restart, not just a user sign-out, when the deployment phase allows it.
- Retry once and check whether the same file is still locked.
- If the violation persists, capture a Process Monitor trace filtered to the filename or directory and identify the process returning a sharing violation.
- Work with the owner of the process or filter driver to change its schedule or behavior. Do not terminate an unknown system process during deployment.
Storage, antivirus, backup, encryption, and other filter drivers can all participate in file access. The trace should establish which component holds the handle before you change its configuration.

How do I troubleshoot an SCCM software-update scan that returns 0x800700?
Use both Configuration Manager and Windows Update evidence. Microsoft states that “WUAHandler just reports what the Windows Update Agent reported,” so WUAHandler.log is a relay, not necessarily the root cause.
Read the two logs together
- In
WUAHandler.log, locate the scan request, the complete HRESULT, and the update or category named near it. - Open
WindowsUpdate.logfor the same time window and find the Windows Update Agent’s detailed response. - Determine whether the failure occurred during scan, metadata processing, download, or installation. A scan error and an installation error can share a prefix but require different remediation.
- Check the device’s policy, proxy, service state, and available disk space only when the logs point to those areas.
Reset damaged Windows Update data when the logs support it
If the logs indicate missing or corrupted update components, Microsoft documents stopping the Windows Update service, renaming C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restarting the service, and initiating a new scan cycle. Renaming preserves the old directory for rollback and comparison; do not delete it until the new scan succeeds and your retention policy permits cleanup.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
net stop wuauservand wait for the service to stop. - Rename the folder, for example with
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old. - Run
net start wuauserv. - In the Configuration Manager control panel applet, open the Actions tab and initiate the applicable software-update scan cycle.
- Recheck both logs and preserve the old folder until the result is known.
This reset does not repair a permissions problem, an unreachable update point, or a bad deployment. Let the log determine whether it is appropriate.
What should I do when SCCM client installation fails with 0x800700?
Start with ccmsetup.log, then correlate ccmsetup-ccmeval.log and client.msi.log. Confirm that the client source is reachable, the installation account or local system context can read it, and the management point and boundary assignment are correct.
- If the suffix is
05, inspect the source share, local installation directory, service permissions, and any policy blocking MSI or script execution. - If it is
03, verify the client source path, command-line properties, and any variable that supplies the installation directory. - If it is
0D, obtain a fresh client package from the approved source and compare the logged content version. - If it is
20, look for a process holding an installer file and investigate it before retrying.
After correcting the identified cause, rerun the client evaluation or approved repair procedure and capture a new timestamped log set. Avoid repeatedly launching setup without recording each attempt; repeated retries make the original failure harder to isolate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I troubleshoot an application or content deployment with 0x800700?
Separate content acquisition from installation. A client can download content successfully and still fail when an installer, detection method, script, or user-context action runs.

- Use the deployment status to identify the exact application or package revision.
- Read the content-transfer and execution logs around the failure time.
- For
0x80070003, verify the content location and the command’s working directory. - For
0x80070005, determine whether the installer requires a user profile, interactive desktop, or access to a protected location that the deployment account does not have. - For
0x8007000D, redistribute or redownload only the content identified as invalid. - For
0x80070020, identify the locking process before changing retry behavior.
Check the installer’s documented exit codes and detection rule after the SCCM action completes. A detection failure can make a successful installation appear unsuccessful, but it should be investigated separately from the HRESULT that stopped the action.
When should I collect a Configuration Manager diagnostics package?
Escalate after you have captured the complete code, workflow, timestamp, and relevant logs, or sooner if the failure affects many devices or an active deployment window. Microsoft’s Configuration Manager diagnostics guidance includes client cache information, execution history, state messages, Configuration Manager logs, Windows logs, and operating-system-deployment logs.

Which fix should I choose for an 0x800700 SCCM failure?
Use the following decision framework instead of treating permission changes, cache resets, content redistribution, and image edits as interchangeable.
| Decision factor | Question | Typical next action |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | Was this client setup, application/content deployment, OSD, or software update? | Open the component logs for that workflow first |
| Suffix | Is the complete value 05, 03, 0D, 20, or another value? | Follow the meaning of that suffix, not the prefix alone |
| Execution phase | Was the device in Windows PE, setup, or full Windows? | Use the phase-specific log path and account context |
| Named object | Which file, path, share, service, or update appears beside the code? | Test or repair that object only |
| Reversibility | Can the change be rolled back easily? | Prefer log collection, content refresh, or a rename before destructive changes |
How can I prevent the same SCCM error from returning?
- Keep task-sequence scripts explicit and visible as individual steps; avoid hidden setup hooks that run outside Configuration Manager’s control.
- Distribute and validate new content versions before broad deployments.
- Keep boundary groups and distribution-point assignments current.
- Document the execution account and required permissions for every package, application, and script.
- Retain a consistent log-collection procedure, including the Windows PE locations used by your task sequences.
- Schedule maintenance for filter drivers and security tools so they do not lock deployment files during critical windows.
- Use a pilot collection to validate image, client, application, and update changes before expanding deployment scope.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 80070005 the same as 0x80070005?
Yes. SCCM and Windows logs may omit the hexadecimal prefix or display the value with different capitalization. Treat the suffix and the surrounding operation as the same condition, while preserving the exact formatting in your support notes.
Can running the SCCM deployment as an administrator fix 0x80070005?
Not necessarily. Configuration Manager actions often run under the local system account or a configured network-access identity, so an administrator’s interactive test may use different permissions. Test with the execution context shown in the log before changing accounts.
Will deleting the SCCM client cache solve every 0x8007000D error?
No. Cache removal helps only when the logged object is a damaged local download. If the source content, image, metadata, or Windows Update components are invalid, the same error will return until that source is repaired.
Why does the smsts.log location change during a task sequence?
The task-sequence engine moves its log as Windows PE, disk preparation, setup, and the installed client take over. Search each phase-specific location for the timestamp of the failure instead of assuming the current file is complete.
Should I restart a computer before collecting SCCM logs?
Collect the relevant logs first whenever possible. A restart can rotate, move, or overwrite useful entries; if a clean restart is required for a sharing-violation test, preserve the pre-restart files and note the exact restart time.
