The code alone does not identify the cause, so the right fix depends on what you were doing when it appeared. Back up important files, restart once, and then follow the branch for the failed operation. For Windows Update, use the built-in troubleshooter before resetting its download cache; use SFC and DISM only as a later repair step. If the error occurs during an upgrade, check storage and preserve setup logs rather than assuming the update cache is corrupt.

What should I do before trying a repair?
Preparation prevents a troubleshooting attempt from becoming a data-loss problem and gives you the context needed for escalation.
- Back up personal files. Microsoft recommends copying important files to a USB flash drive and also points to OneDrive backup. A USB drive is an optional backup or extra-storage aid, not a required cure for this error.

How do I fix 0x80070032 when it appears in Windows Update?
Use these steps in order. Stop when the update installs successfully; more invasive steps are not automatically better.
1. Restart Windows and retry once
Choose Start > Power > Restart, sign in again and retry the same update. Restarting clears a transient pending-reboot state. It is a low-risk check, not a guaranteed fix. If the code returns, continue rather than repeatedly rebooting.
2. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
On current Windows 11 and recent Windows 10 builds, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, allow the checks to finish and apply any recommended action. Restart if Windows requests it, then retry the original update.
Some Windows 10 installations use the older path Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. The labels vary slightly by Windows release, but the purpose is the same: diagnose update services and common configuration problems without manually deleting files.
3. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Do this only when the failure is tied to Windows Update. It removes cached update downloads; it is not a universal 0x80070032 repair and should not be used to troubleshoot an unrelated Store or application error.

services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the window open.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. These are cached update files; your personal documents are stored elsewhere. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart Windows and check for the same update again.
If Windows will not let you clear the folder, the service may still be running or another update process may have a file open. Recheck that Windows Update is stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system folders.
4. Check and repair protected Windows files
Use System File Checker after the troubleshooter and cache reset have failed, particularly when other Windows components also behave abnormally. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, approve the User Account Control prompt and run:
sfc /scannowWait for verification to reach 100 percent. SFC checks protected system files and repairs files it can repair. Restart Windows after it finishes, then retry the update. If SFC reports that it could not complete or could not repair all files, continue to DISM rather than repeating the same command indefinitely.
5. Assess and repair the Windows component store with DISM
In the same elevated Command Prompt, DISM can assess the online Windows image and, when necessary, repair it. Assessment and repair are different operations:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAllow the repair to finish, even if progress appears to pause. SFC and DISM are conditional escalation steps, not guarantees that every 0x80070032 occurrence will be fixed.
6. Preserve context if Windows Update still fails
Do not jump straight to reinstalling Windows or repeatedly clearing caches. Record whether the failure is a feature update or a cumulative update, the update identifier if shown, the exact text and the time of failure. Preserve the relevant Windows Update, Setup or CBS logs. That information lets Microsoft support or an administrator match the status to the operation that generated it; the hexadecimal code by itself is not enough to select a more invasive fix.
How do I handle 0x80070032 during a feature upgrade or Windows installation?
An installation or upgrade has different constraints from a routine update. Start with a backup and available storage, then use the installation context to decide what to do next.
Check storage before retrying Setup
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance associates some installation failures with insufficient disk space and notes that a USB drive may be needed when a device has a small hard drive. Check the system drive’s available space and remove or move only files you can identify safely.
