“0x800704sd” is not a valid hexadecimal Windows error code because hexadecimal uses digits 0–9 and letters A–F; the character shown as “s” is probably the digit 5. The documented code 0x8007045D (decimal error 1117, ERROR_IO_DEVICE) means Windows could not complete a read or write request. It does not, by itself, identify a dead SSD, hard drive, USB stick, cable or controller. First copy the exact code from Windows Update history, the original dialog or the setup screen. Then use the branch that matches where the failure occurred: Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter for an ordinary update, or controlled media, port and storage checks when setup or installation media is involved.

Is 0x800704sd a real Windows error code?

No. The letter s cannot appear in a hexadecimal code. Windows error codes commonly use the characters 0–9 and A–F, so the displayed text is most likely a transcription or optical-reading mistake for 0x8007045D, where the character is the digit 5 followed by D.

Do not change services, erase update caches, format a disk or replace hardware until you confirm the spelling. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and copy the code exactly, or photograph the original setup dialog. If the message came from installation media, record the wording and the point at which it appeared. A similar-looking code can describe a different problem and require a different remedy.

What does Windows error 0x8007045D mean?

Microsoft’s Win32 error table identifies error 1117, hexadecimal 0x45D, as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” In practical terms, Windows sent a read or write request and the storage path did not complete it.

The message is a symptom, not a component-level diagnosis. The failed path could include an internal SSD or hard drive, a USB flash drive, an external enclosure, a cable, a port, a hub, a controller or the media being read. The operation and failure stage determine which part is most plausible. If the same code appears while unrelated files are being read or written, treat the system drive or its connection as a possible I/O problem and protect readable data before invasive checks.

What should I check before trying a fix?

Use these checks to avoid applying the wrong branch or making a storage problem harder to recover:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Capture the exact code. Copy it from Windows Update history, the original error dialog or the setup screen. Confirm whether it is 0x8007045D, another code, or only an approximate transcription.
  2. Identify the operation. Note whether the failure happened during a normal Windows Update download/install, an in-place upgrade, a clean installation, booting from media, copying or expanding files, partitioning, or writing to the target drive.
  3. List the active storage path. Record which internal drive, USB installer, external disk, card, enclosure, cable, port and hub were involved.
  4. Back up personal files first. If files are still readable, copy important data to a separate, reliable location before disk checks, formatting, partition changes or repeated retries.
  5. Separate reversible tests from destructive actions. Changing a port, removing a hub or recreating installation media is reversible. Formatting, deleting partitions or replacing a drive can destroy data and should wait until the evidence points there and a backup exists.

How do I fix 0x8007045D in ordinary Windows Update?

For a routine update failure inside an already-running Windows installation, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. It is the supported first step for an update error code, and it does not require you to assume that a disk has failed.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Follow the recommendations shown by the troubleshooter.
  6. Restart the PC when prompted or after the recommendations finish.
  7. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
  5. Apply the recommendations, restart the PC and return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to select Check for updates.

Microsoft’s support guidance describes this troubleshooter as the way to help resolve an error code that appears while downloading and installing Windows updates. If it reports that it cannot correct the issue, keep the exact code and the troubleshooter’s findings for the next branch rather than substituting an unrelated service procedure.

Why should I not use the 0x80070422 service fix?

0x80070422 is a separate Windows Update condition associated with a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. Its service-start instructions do not confirm or repair 0x8007045D. Applying them to an I/O-device error can distract from the actual read/write failure, so use the procedure that matches the code you recorded.

How do I fix 0x8007045D during Windows setup or an upgrade?

If the code appears while booting from installation media, copying or expanding files, partitioning, or writing to the target drive, isolate the removable-media path before making changes to the internal disk. Record the exact stage because a failure while reading the installer points to a different path than a failure while writing the target.

1. Disconnect nonessential devices

Shut down and remove nonessential USB devices, external disks, hubs and memory cards. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and the installation media required to start setup. A hub, enclosure or second removable disk can add another cable, controller or power connection to the read path.

2. Recreate the installer from fresh official Microsoft media

Build the installer again from fresh official Microsoft installation media. Use a different reliable USB flash drive rather than reusing the one that produced the error. This controls for damaged or intermittently readable installer media without changing the computer’s internal storage.

3. Change one connection at a time

Connect the new installer directly to a different USB port, avoiding hubs. If a cable or enclosure is part of the path, use a known-good replacement where available. Retry setup after each controlled change, keeping a note of which media and port were used.

4. Compare the result

  • If setup succeeds with the new USB drive or a different port, the original removable-media path is implicated.
  • If the error follows the new media across ports, the target drive or its connection becomes more likely, especially if ordinary storage operations also fail.
  • If setup fails only at a particular stage, keep that stage in your notes; it helps distinguish reading installer files from writing to the target.

The code alone cannot prove that an SSD, hard drive, cable, USB stick, enclosure, controller or file system is defective. Controlled isolation is more informative than immediately formatting a partition or replacing a component.

How can I tell which part of the storage path is involved?

Compare the operation, active path, failure stage and data risk. Start with the least destructive test that changes only one variable.

Where the error appears First controlled check What a change in result suggests Data-risk level
Normal Windows Update in the desktop Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check for updates again Resolution after the troubleshooter points to an update-state problem; recurrence during unrelated file access warrants storage investigation Low, provided personal files are backed up
Booting from an installer USB Recreate the media on a different flash drive and connect it directly to another port Success with new media or a new port implicates the original removable path Low to moderate; do not format the target yet
Copying or expanding installer files Repeat with fresh media and no hub, changing one connection at a time A failure that follows the media suggests the installer path; a failure that remains can implicate the target or controller Moderate; preserve existing files first
Partitioning or writing to the target drive Stop destructive changes, back up readable data and verify the media path before retrying Persistent failure after media and port isolation raises concern about the target drive or its connection High if partitions are deleted or formatted
Unrelated file reads or writes in Windows Back up immediately and observe whether errors occur on the same drive or connection Repeated I/O failures outside setup make a physical path or storage problem more plausible High; prioritize data preservation

What should I do if the error appears while reading ordinary files?

Stop treating the message as only an update problem. If the same read/write failure occurs when opening, copying or saving unrelated files, copy the most important readable data first. Avoid repeated retries that produce additional stress or overwrite the only readable copy.

After the backup, identify whether the failures stay with one internal drive, external enclosure, cable or USB connection. A failure that moves when you change the removable device or port points toward that path; a failure that remains on the same target across clean media and connections deserves storage and hardware diagnosis. The error still does not name a single failed part, so do not claim a drive is dead solely from the code.

Which actions should I postpone?

  • Formatting the target: it can erase the files you are trying to preserve and does not repair a bad USB path.
  • Deleting partitions: do this only when the installation plan is intentional, the backup is complete and the media path has been isolated.
  • Changing several components at once: replacing the USB drive, cable, port and target together prevents you from learning which path caused the failure.
  • Using a procedure for a different code: especially the service-focused steps associated with 0x80070422.
  • Assuming the newest retry is proof of a fix: an intermittent I/O path can work once and fail again, so record the media, port and stage for each attempt.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek storage help?

Escalate after you have confirmed the exact code, backed up readable files and tested fresh installation media through a different direct port. Persistent failures during both setup and ordinary file operations indicate that the target drive, its connection or a controller may need hands-on diagnosis. If data becomes unreadable, prioritize professional data-recovery advice over formatting or repeated installation attempts.

Keep a short incident record: the exact code, Windows edition, operation, failure stage, media used, port or cable, devices disconnected and the result of each retry. That record prevents circular troubleshooting and gives a technician enough context to test the correct path.

Can an I/O error be caused by the installer USB instead of the PC?

Yes. A damaged or intermittently readable installer drive, USB port, hub, cable or enclosure can interrupt the read request before Windows ever writes to the internal disk. Recreating official media on a different reliable flash drive and connecting it directly to another port is a reversible way to separate that possibility from a target-drive problem.

As an optional shortcut after you verify the code, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash or substitutes for testing a failing physical storage path.

What if Windows shows a different code after I retry?

Use the new code as a separate diagnosis instead of assuming it has the same meaning as 0x8007045D. Save the complete message and the stage at which it appeared, because Windows can report a different failure after a media or connection change.

Will changing a USB port erase my files?

Moving an installer or external device to another port is normally a connection test and does not erase data. Data loss risk begins with actions such as formatting, deleting partitions or writing over a drive, so keep those actions separate from port and media isolation.

Should I keep retrying setup if it sometimes works?

Intermittent success is not confirmation that the storage path is healthy. If the same drive or media alternates between successful and failed reads, stop long retry cycles, preserve your files and document which connection produced each result before continuing.

Can Windows Update troubleshooting repair a failing disk?

No. The Windows Update troubleshooter addresses update-related conditions; it does not establish that a physical drive, cable or USB device can reliably complete reads and writes. When errors also occur during ordinary file access, handle the problem as a possible storage-path failure and protect data first.

Frequently Asked Questions
