0x80070643 is a generic Windows Installer failure, so the code alone does not reveal the cause. First identify the failed KB number and update name in Windows Update history. If the failed package is a Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) update, the most likely issue is insufficient space in the recovery partition; Microsoft’s documented remedy is to enlarge that partition using the procedure in KB5035679. For other packages, restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the update cache, repair the component store with DISM and SFC, and then use an in-place repair only if the earlier steps fail.
What does Windows Update error 0x80070643 mean?
0x80070643 maps to ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE, a broad Windows Installer error. It can be raised while installing a cumulative update, Defender update, .NET Framework package, or a servicing update for WinRE. Because several unrelated packages can return the same code, treating every occurrence as a damaged download or a virus leads to the wrong fix.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft has documented a specific Windows 11 case involving WinRE. Some recovery partitions do not have enough free space for WinRE servicing. An error-handling bug can report 0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE instead of the expected insufficient-space code, c001. In that situation, repeatedly downloading the update will not solve the capacity problem; the recovery partition must be enlarged according to Microsoft’s KB5035679 procedure.
The failed KB number, update title, Windows edition and version, and any reference to WinRE or .NET are therefore the most useful diagnostic facts. Record them before changing system files or partitions.

How do I find which update failed?
Use Update history to identify the package before choosing a remedy. This prevents applying a risky partition change to an unrelated update.
- Open Settings and select Windows Update. On some Windows 10 builds, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Update history (or View update history).
- Expand the failed category, such as Quality updates, Definition updates, Driver updates or Other updates.
- Write down the KB number, complete update name, date, and whether the entry says WinRE, .NET Framework, Microsoft Defender, a cumulative update, or something else.
- Open Settings > System > About (or System > About in Windows 10) and note the Windows edition, version and system type. These details matter if you later use installation media.
If history lists several failures, start with the newest entry and deal with each package separately. A single 0x80070643 result does not prove that all of the listed updates share one cause.
What should I check before using advanced repairs?
These low-risk checks address common update conditions and should be completed before clearing system folders or resizing a partition.
- Restart Windows. A pending reboot can leave the servicing stack in an unfinished state.
- Check the connection. Use a stable network and avoid interrupting the download or restart phases.
- Confirm free storage. Open Settings > System > Storage and remove or move files only when you know what they are. Windows needs working space for extraction and rollback, not merely the size of the update package.
- Synchronize the clock. In Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and time-zone settings, then choose Sync now when available.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
- Retry the same update. Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. Record whether the same KB fails again; a different failure can indicate that the first issue was transient.
How do I reset the Windows Update download cache?
A damaged or incomplete cache can prevent an otherwise valid package from installing. Resetting it removes only downloaded update files; Windows will recreate the folder and download the package again. Do this after recording the failed KB.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Stop the update service by running
net stop wuauserv. - Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service with
net stop bits. If Windows says a service is already stopped, continue. - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is locked, confirm that the services in the previous steps actually stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system files. - Return to the elevated terminal and run
net start bits, followed bynet start wuauserv. - Restart Windows, run Check for updates, and retry the specific KB.
This procedure does not repair a shortage in the recovery partition or corruption in the component store. If the same WinRE update still returns 0x80070643, move to the WinRE branch rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

What if the failed update is for WinRE?
A WinRE-specific failure is the strongest clue that recovery-partition capacity is involved. Microsoft states that some recovery partitions are too small, and that the error-code handling bug can expose 0x80070643 instead of the expected c001 insufficient-space message.

How can I confirm the WinRE branch?
- Check Update history for “Windows Recovery Environment,” “WinRE,” or wording that identifies a recovery-environment servicing update.
- Match the KB number against the Microsoft support article for that update. Do not infer the branch from the error code alone.
- Inspect the disk layout in Disk Management (
diskmgmt.msc) or another built-in view and verify which partition is marked as the recovery partition. Do not delete, format or assign a drive letter to it.
How does Microsoft’s supported fix work?
Microsoft’s KB5035679 instructions enlarge the recovery partition and then retry WinRE servicing. The article includes a sample script that increases the WinRE partition by 250 MB. Follow that procedure exactly for the device’s partition layout and Windows version; the script is not a universal command that should be copied into an arbitrary disk configuration.
- Back up important personal files before making any partition change.
- Confirm that the device is using the disk and recovery partition shown in the Microsoft procedure. Devices with multiple disks, custom partition layouts or manufacturer recovery tools need extra care.
- Read every prerequisite and verification step in KB5035679 before executing its commands. An incorrect partition operation can make Windows or recovery tools unbootable.
- After the partition change completes, restart Windows and retry the same WinRE KB from Windows Update.
Do not substitute random third-party partition commands for Microsoft’s documented method. If the recovery layout does not match the KB instructions, stop and obtain device-specific support rather than guessing.
How do I repair Windows component-store corruption?
Use DISM and then SFC when the update history, troubleshooter or other symptoms suggest damaged Windows servicing files. Run both commands from an elevated terminal, in the order shown.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. The percentage can pause for a long time; do not close the window while DISM is working. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. SFC checks protected system files against the repaired component store. - Restart Windows even if the commands report that no corruption was found.
- Run Windows Update and retry the recorded KB.
DISM and SFC are repair steps, not proof that 0x80070643 has been fixed. The result is confirmed only when the target update installs successfully. If either command reports that it could not complete, note the exact message and use Microsoft’s servicing guidance for that message instead of repeating the commands indefinitely.

What if the failed package is a .NET Framework update?
.NET Framework is one possible target of 0x80070643, but the code does not establish that .NET is the cause. Use the update title and KB in Update history to confirm the branch, then identify the installed .NET release and Windows version.
Microsoft explains that .NET Framework 4.5 and later are in-place updates included with Windows and serviced independently. They are not a set of freely interchangeable applications. Uninstalling an in-box .NET release without checking application dependencies can break programs that rely on it.
- In Update history, record the full .NET package name and KB.
- Check Settings > System > About for the Windows edition and version. Use Microsoft’s .NET release-identification guidance to determine which release is installed.
- Restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and retry the package.
- If component-store corruption is also indicated, complete the DISM and SFC sequence before considering any removal or reinstall action.
- Do not remove an in-box .NET component merely because 0x80070643 appears. Escalate to Microsoft’s KB-specific .NET instructions when the package still fails.
What if the update is for Defender, a cumulative update, or an unknown component?
For Defender, cumulative and other packages, begin with the general checks, cache reset, and component-store repair. Keep the failed KB visible while troubleshooting so you can tell whether Windows is retrying the same package or a newly superseded one.
- Defender update: verify the update title and retry after a restart and troubleshooter run. Do not assume a Defender label means the computer is infected; 0x80070643 is an installation status, not a malware diagnosis.
- Cumulative update: run DISM followed by SFC, restart, and retry. If the package remains blocked, check Microsoft’s support page for that exact KB and Windows build.
- Unknown package: identify the KB from Update history before changing partitions, uninstalling .NET, or deleting additional system folders.
Windows Update may replace an older failed package with a superseding cumulative update. Compare the KB and title after each retry instead of assuming that a changed entry is the same failure.
When should I use Windows installation media for an in-place repair?
Use an in-place repair only after the built-in troubleshooter, cache reset and component-store repairs fail, and after you have checked the KB-specific guidance. An in-place repair reinstalls Windows system components while aiming to preserve installed applications and personal files, but it still requires the correct edition and architecture.

- Obtain official Windows installation media or an ISO that matches the device’s edition, language and architecture. A mismatch can remove the option to keep applications or cause setup to stop.
- If you create a bootable USB flash drive, treat the drive as an enabling accessory for the installation media. The USB itself does not fix 0x80070643.
- From the running Windows desktop, open the media and launch
setup.exe. Do not boot from the USB when your goal is an in-place repair that preserves the existing installation. - Follow Setup’s compatibility checks and select the option to keep personal files and apps when it is offered and appropriate for your edition.
- Allow the installation to restart the computer. Keep the device connected to power and do not interrupt the process.
- After Windows starts, check the build, run Windows Update, and retry the original KB.
If Setup does not offer the keep-files-and-apps choice, stop and resolve the edition, language or architecture mismatch before proceeding. A clean installation is a different operation and can remove applications and data.
How does Windows 10 support status affect the decision?
Microsoft’s free support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 device that continues to fail updates in October 2026 therefore needs a lifecycle decision as well as a one-time troubleshooting attempt.
- Confirm whether the hardware can run a supported Windows 11 release and whether the required edition and licensing are available.
- If the device must remain on Windows 10, determine what support arrangement applies to that specific installation rather than assuming ordinary free servicing continues.
- Do not use an in-place repair to conceal an unsupported operating-system status. Repair media can restore system files, but it does not extend Microsoft’s support lifecycle.
Windows 11 users should still follow the KB-specific instructions for their installed release. WinRE partition layouts, servicing-stack behavior and update requirements can vary by version and device.
Which remedy should I choose?
Use the failed update type and the evidence you collected to choose the least risky branch first.
| Evidence | Best next step | Risk and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown or first occurrence | Restart, check network, storage and time; run the Windows Update troubleshooter | Lowest risk; retry and record the resulting KB |
| Repeated failure with cache symptoms | Stop the services, clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restart services and retry |
Removes downloaded update files, not personal files or component-store corruption |
| WinRE update plus 0x80070643 | Verify the recovery layout and follow KB5035679 to enlarge the recovery partition | Advanced and less reversible; do not improvise partition commands |
| DISM/SFC or servicing symptoms | Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow |
Run elevated and restart before retrying; success is confirmed by installation |
| .NET Framework package | Identify the .NET release and apply the KB-specific guidance | .NET 4.5+ is an in-place Windows component; avoid blind removal |
| All supported manual steps fail | Use matching official installation media for an in-place repair | Edition and architecture must match; the USB is only media storage |
What should I do if the error returns after a repair?
- Reopen Update history and verify whether the failing KB changed. A new KB means you are troubleshooting a different package.
- Check that the recovery-partition branch was used only for a WinRE update. Partition resizing cannot repair a .NET or cumulative-update failure.
- Save the exact DISM, SFC and Windows Update error text. Generic summaries hide the component that failed and make support escalation slower.
- Undo only changes you understand. Do not delete additional folders, remove .NET releases, or alter recovery partitions as experiments.
- Escalate with the Windows version, edition, architecture, failed KB, update title, and the steps already completed. Those details let support match the device to the correct Microsoft procedure.

Why does Windows show a different error after I clear the cache?
Clearing the cache forces Windows to download and evaluate the package again. A new code can expose a separate prerequisite or a superseding KB, so compare the new Update history entry with the original rather than treating every code as the same failure.
