The hexadecimal code 0x8007422 is associated with Microsoft Store failures such as the Store not opening, app downloads not starting, or Store-connected games being unable to sign in. Microsoft does not publish a definitive reference entry for this exact code, and the only located report is a community question from May 5, 2023. Treat the code as something to verify, not as proof of a particular cause.
Confirm the code and your Windows build, sign in, install updates, reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe, and then use the Store app’s Repair or Reset controls. If that does not work, check package registration, administrator policy, proxy and firewall access, account authorization, region, compatibility, and pending restarts. The sequence below covers both cases: a Store that opens but cannot download, and a Store that will not open at all.

What does error 0x8007422 mean?
There is no Microsoft-authored error-code definition establishing one universal meaning for 0x8007422. A Microsoft Q&A user reported the code while Microsoft Store would not open or download apps and while Store-connected Minecraft sign-in failed, but that community report does not prove that every occurrence has the same cause.
A similar-looking hexadecimal code can lead you toward the wrong troubleshooting family. Before changing anything, read the code directly from the message or screenshot and record the full wording. Also note whether the Store window never appears, opens but shows an error, starts a download and stops, or allows downloads but blocks sign-in. Those differences determine which later checks matter.

The code alone is not evidence that your computer is infected or that a particular file is damaged. It indicates that Windows Store access needs diagnosis.
What should I record before trying a fix?
Capture enough detail to compare the result after each step and to give Microsoft Support useful evidence if escalation is necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Write down the exact code, including every digit and letter, and copy the complete message if possible.
- Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the Windows edition, version, and build number. - Record whether Microsoft Store opens, whether the failure happens before or after selecting Get, and whether only one app is affected.
- Note whether Store-connected games fail at sign-in as well as whether ordinary apps fail to download.
- Write down whether Windows or Store updates were recently installed and whether the computer has been restarted since then.
This information prevents a typo from being mistaken for a documented error family and gives support a reproducible description instead of only a number.
How do I sign in, update Windows, and update Microsoft Store?
Microsoft’s low-risk sequence starts with account access and updates. Complete these checks before using PowerShell or removing packages.
- Open Microsoft Store and sign in with the Microsoft account used to obtain the affected apps. If Store does not open, continue with the cache and app-repair steps below, then return to account sign-in.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install every pending update, and restart when Windows requests it. A pending restart can leave Store services and app packages in an incomplete state.
- After restarting, open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates in Windows 11. Let Store finish updating its own components before testing the failed app.
- Check that the app supports the installed Windows version. An app built for a different edition or build can remain unavailable even when Store itself works.
Test one known-free or already-owned app after the restart. If the Store opens and that test succeeds, the original problem may be limited to the affected app’s authorization, compatibility, region, or package state rather than the Store service itself.
How do I reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe?
wsreset.exe clears the Store cache without requiring you to remove the Store app. It is the quickest built-in repair for a Store that opens incorrectly or will not begin a download.

- Press
Win+Rto open the Run dialog. - Type
wsreset.exeexactly and select OK. - Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears. Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds, after which Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Sign in if prompted, select Library > Get updates, and retry the download.
Do not close the blank window immediately. If it remains open substantially longer than expected, or Store does not launch afterward, restart Windows once and move to app Repair or Reset rather than repeatedly running the command.
How do I repair or reset Microsoft Store in Settings?
Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions for many Store apps. Repair attempts to correct the app while retaining its data; Reset is a deeper local reset and may require you to sign in again.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. On some Windows 10 builds, the equivalent page is Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Store, open its additional options, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for it to finish, and test Store.
- If the failure remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the prompt, then open Store, sign in again if necessary, and test a download.
If only one application fails while other Store downloads work, use Library to reinstall that application after Store is healthy. Reinstalling the individual app is more targeted than resetting the entire Store.
How do I check whether Microsoft Store is registered for my account?
If Store itself will not open or appears to be missing from the current user profile, check whether its package exists and, when appropriate, register it for that user. This is an advanced step and should be performed exactly as written.

Use a non-elevated PowerShell window when registering for the account that is having the problem. Microsoft cautions that an elevated prompt registers for the administrator account, which can leave the affected standard user unchanged. Close PowerShell, restart Windows, and test Store after the command completes.
Registration is not a substitute for Repair or Reset when Store is present and functioning for other users. Avoid repeatedly running package commands if PowerShell reports a specific deployment error; preserve that error text for support.
Could policy, proxy, or firewall settings be blocking the Store?
Yes. A managed computer can deliberately restrict Microsoft Store, and network controls can allow ordinary web browsing while blocking Store downloads and updates.
Check administrator policy
On work, school, or family-managed PCs, an administrator policy named RemoveWindowsStore can block Store access. If the device is managed, ask the administrator whether that policy is enabled instead of changing policy settings yourself. A local change may be reverted by management and may violate the device owner’s rules.
Check proxy and firewall access
Microsoft documents that Store downloads and updates require specific service endpoints. A firewall, web filter, security gateway, or proxy must allow those endpoints and must not replace or block the required connections. Temporarily disabling protection is not a complete diagnosis and can expose the computer; have the network administrator review the allow-list and proxy logs instead.
If Store works on another network but not on the current one, that comparison points toward network policy rather than an app-package problem. Record the network type, proxy configuration, and any gateway error for the administrator.

Why can Store open while one app still will not install?
When Store opens normally but a particular app cannot be found, downloaded, or launched, check account and catalog conditions before changing Store registration.
| Condition | What to check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Country or region | Verify the Windows region and the account’s Store region. | The app may not be offered in the selected market. |
| Family settings | Review Microsoft family restrictions and age limits. | A restriction can hide or block an otherwise compatible app. |
| App removed from Store | Search the publisher’s current Store listing or check with the publisher. | An app that has been withdrawn cannot be installed from Store. |
| Device compatibility | Compare the app’s requirements with the Windows edition, build, hardware, and architecture. | Store can operate while the individual app remains ineligible. |
| Microsoft-account authorization | Confirm that the signed-in account owns or is authorized to use the app. | Sign-in or licensing failure can stop a download after Store opens. |
| Pending restart | Restart after Windows or app updates. | Store may wait for servicing to finish before installing another package. |
These checks are especially important when the Store displays no matching result or when the download button is unavailable rather than producing a Store-wide error.
What is the right troubleshooting branch for my symptoms?
The two common patterns need slightly different emphasis. Use the first branch when Store opens but downloads or sign-in fail; use the second when Store itself will not open or is not registered.
| Symptoms | Prioritize | Do not skip |
|---|---|---|
| Store opens, but downloads fail or a game cannot sign in | Account sign-in, Windows and Store updates, wsreset.exe, Repair or Reset, region, family settings, compatibility, authorization, and network endpoints. |
Restart after updates and test whether a second app behaves the same way. |
| Store will not open, is missing, or works only for another user | wsreset.exe, Settings Repair or Reset, package check with Get-AppxPackage, non-elevated registration, and policy review. |
Confirm the Windows build and avoid uninstalling the Store as a routine fix. |
Should I uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Store?
No. Microsoft Learn says, “In Windows, we don’t recommend removing or uninstalling the Microsoft Store app.” It also states that there is no supported workaround to uninstall or reinstall Store.
Do not use an unverified script, registry cleaner, or downloaded AppX package as a substitute for the documented Repair, Reset, cache-reset, and registration steps. If Microsoft Store was actually removed, Microsoft identifies resetting or reinstalling Windows as the only Microsoft-supported recovery method. That is a recovery boundary for a missing Store, not a reason to reset Windows for an ordinary cache or download error.

winget search <App name>
winget install <App name>
Replace <App name> with the application’s name. This does not repair Microsoft Store, bypass licensing, or guarantee that a Store-only game will work. Use it only when the package is available through a supported source and the app’s publisher permits that installation route.
When should I contact Microsoft Support?
Contact Microsoft Support after the documented sequence fails, especially when the code returns after a restart or when Store registration produces a deployment error. Provide the exact hexadecimal code, full message, Windows edition and build from winver, the Store behavior, the affected app, account and region details that are relevant, and the steps already attempted.
Include whether wsreset.exe opened Store, whether Repair or Reset changed anything, whether Get-AppxPackage found the package, and whether the device is managed by an organization. This lets support distinguish an account or catalog restriction from a local package or network problem without asking you to repeat every preliminary check.
Do not remove Store, alter administrator policy, or run unofficial package scripts while waiting for support. Preserve error text and screenshots, and mention any recent Windows update or restart that preceded the failure.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, temporary and cache cleanup, settings that affect system load, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and app-crash logging. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every Store failure. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription is required.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x8007422 a virus warning?
No conclusion about malware can be drawn from this code alone. The documented symptom is a Microsoft Store access or download failure, so diagnose the Store, account, package, and network conditions first.
Recommended Free Tools
Will resetting Microsoft Store delete my installed games?
Resetting the Store app resets its local app data and may require you to sign in again. It is different from uninstalling every game, but you should verify your account authorization before reinstalling an affected title.
Why does the Store work for another Windows user on the same PC?
That pattern points toward per-user registration, account authorization, or profile-specific Store data rather than a system-wide network outage. Check registration from the affected account with a non-elevated PowerShell window.
What if Microsoft Store is missing entirely?
Do not install a package from an unofficial download site. Microsoft states that if Store was removed, resetting or reinstalling Windows is the only Microsoft-supported recovery route.
Can a VPN or proxy cause Store downloads to fail?
A proxy, firewall, or managed network can block the service endpoints required for Store downloads and updates. Ask the network administrator to review the required allow-list and proxy logs instead of disabling security controls permanently.
