The number 1014 is not a universal IMAP error code. In mail software it usually indicates that a connection was closed or lost, but the same number can also refer to an Exchange Online DNS event or Cloudflare’s web error “CNAME Cross-User Banned.” The correct fix depends on the complete alert, your provider, the app showing it, and whether webmail works. Capture those details first, then follow the matching path below. Do not change DNS or mail settings until you know which kind of 1014 you are seeing.
What does an IMAP server error 1014 mean?
Open-Xchange’s official error catalog uses 1014 for “Connection closed to mail server …” and “Lost connection to mail server.” That describes a terminated session, not a single root cause. A server outage, expired or rejected credentials, an authentication-policy change, incorrect TLS settings, a blocked network request, or a security product interrupting the connection can all produce a similar symptom.

There is no single, authoritative database that maps every provider’s 1014 label to one repair. Providers and clients sometimes display their own alert numbers. Treat 1014 as a clue and use the surrounding text and hostname to identify the actual problem.
How can I identify which 1014 I have?
Before changing anything, write down the complete message and where it appeared. The phrase “Your IMAP server wants to alert to the following: 1014” in Outlook or Thunderbird is a different case from Event Viewer entry 1014 or a browser page headed “Error 1014.”

Record these details
- The exact alert, including any words before or after 1014.
- The application: Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, another client, webmail, Windows Event Viewer, or a browser.
- Your mail provider and the server hostname shown in account settings.
- IMAP and SMTP ports, encryption mode, and authentication method.
- The time and time zone of each failure.
- Whether webmail accepts the same account and password.
- Whether the problem occurs on another network or in another mail client.
Separate the three common contexts
| Where you see 1014 | What it generally means | Correct starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Mail client or Open-Xchange server | Connection closed or lost, with provider-specific causes | Check account access, server settings, network path, TLS, and server availability |
| Windows Event Viewer mentioning Exchange Online | A security product may block refreshes of outlook.office365.com |
Review protection logs and work with the vendor on a documented DNS-record exclusion |
| Cloudflare browser page | “CNAME Cross-User Banned,” an HTTP/DNS configuration condition | Correct CNAME ownership, proxy mode, HTTPS mode, or zone-hold settings; this is not an IMAP login repair |
What should I check first when webmail and IMAP both fail?
Try the provider’s webmail in a private browser window. If webmail also rejects the account, prioritize account status, password, authentication policy, or a provider outage instead of repeatedly rebuilding the local mail profile.
- Open the provider’s official webmail address rather than a saved client link.
- Enter the full mailbox address and current password manually. Check the keyboard layout and Caps Lock.
- Look for a lockout, expired password, suspended mailbox, migration notice, or a request to accept new terms.
- If the provider offers a security or sign-in activity page, review recent blocks and any required verification.
- Check the provider’s status page or support notices for an incident affecting IMAP or authentication.
A successful webmail login narrows the fault to the client, its stored credentials, the local network, or a security product. A failed webmail login means changing the IMAP port is unlikely to help until the account is restored.
How do I verify the password and authentication method?
Re-enter credentials only after confirming that the account works in webmail. Many clients retain an old password in Windows Credential Manager or their own password store, so an apparently correct setting can still submit stale credentials.
Refresh stored credentials safely
- Close the mail client.
- Open Control Panel and search for Credential Manager. Under Windows Credentials, remove only entries clearly belonging to the affected mail account or server.
- Reopen the client and enter the password when prompted.
- If the account uses two-step verification or an app-password requirement, follow the provider’s current procedure instead of substituting the normal sign-in password.
Do not delete a working account profile before recording its folders, local archives, and server settings. Removing a profile can hide locally stored mail even though it does not delete messages held on the server.
Check for policy changes
A provider can disable a legacy authentication method while leaving the mailbox active. If the alert says the server does not support “Password authentication,” compare the client choices with the provider’s current documentation. Select the provider’s required modern sign-in method when available; do not force an obsolete method simply because it worked previously.

Which IMAP and SMTP settings should I verify?
Use the provider’s current settings page as the authority. Confirm all five values: incoming hostname, incoming port, TLS mode, authentication method, and username format. SMTP settings matter because a profile can receive mail while failing when it tries to send.
Incoming IMAP checks
- Hostname: enter the exact provider name, not a guessed variation.
- Port: use the port paired with the provider’s stated encryption mode.
- Security: distinguish implicit SSL/TLS from STARTTLS; selecting the wrong one can terminate the handshake.
- Authentication: choose the method the provider supports, and use the full email address when required.
- Connection security: avoid “none” unless the provider explicitly documents it for your network.
Outgoing SMTP checks
- Confirm the SMTP hostname and port separately from IMAP.
- Enable encryption exactly as documented, such as STARTTLS where required.
- Turn on SMTP authentication and use the same full address and approved credential when the provider requires it.
After saving, restart the client and test both receive and send. If the client offers a “test account settings” button, treat its result as a clue; a successful test does not prove that intermittent server closures are resolved.
How do I fix the Comcast/Xfinity 1014 alert?
In a documented Comcast/Xfinity support discussion, Outlook displayed “Your IMAP server wants to alert to the following: 1014” while webmail also said the credentials were not accepted. That combination makes account status, password, and authentication the first checks for Comcast users.
Use the captured Comcast settings as a comparison
A related Thunderbird discussion records imap.comcast.net on port 993 with SSL/TLS and normal-password authentication. It lists smtp.comcast.net on port 587 with STARTTLS, using the full Comcast email address. These settings were provider guidance captured in that discussion; verify them against current Xfinity documentation before applying them.
- Sign in to Xfinity webmail and confirm the mailbox is active.
- Change or re-enter the password if webmail rejects it, then update the client credential.
- Check that the username is the complete email address, not only the portion before the at sign.
- Compare IMAP 993 SSL/TLS and SMTP 587 STARTTLS with the current provider instructions.
- Test webmail and the client again. If both fail, contact Xfinity support with the exact alert and timestamps.
What if 1014 appears in Open-Xchange or another mail server?
Open-Xchange documents the mail meanings “Connection closed to mail server …” and “Lost connection to mail server.” For these cases, test the whole connection path rather than assuming the password is wrong.

Check the connection path
- Try webmail for the same mailbox.
- Try the account from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, without changing credentials.
- Confirm the hostname resolves and that the configured port is reachable from your network. A network administrator can test the port with approved diagnostic tools.
- Review firewall, VPN, antivirus, and internet-protection logs for blocked mail connections or TLS inspection.
- Ask the mail administrator whether the server closed sessions, reached a connection limit, or had maintenance at the recorded time.
If several clients and networks receive connection-closed alerts at the same time, the provider should inspect server logs. A single affected computer points more strongly to local credentials, software, or network filtering.
How do I handle Exchange Online Event ID 1014?
Microsoft documents a separate Exchange Online Event ID 1014. In that case, third-party malware or internet-protection software can block requests while Windows refreshes the DNS record for outlook.office365.com. Microsoft notes that the record’s time to live (TTL) is five minutes.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect the event’s source, timestamp, and full description to confirm it references Exchange Online and
outlook.office365.com. - Review the security product’s web, DNS, and network-protection logs at the same time.
- Update the security product and Windows using your organization’s normal change process.
- Contact the security-software vendor or administrator and request a vendor-approved exclusion for the documented DNS record, rather than disabling protection globally.
- After the change, allow several DNS refresh cycles and confirm that Outlook connects normally.
Do not treat this Event Viewer entry as proof that your mailbox password is invalid. It is a DNS-refresh and traffic-filtering path, distinct from a mail client’s “IMAP server wants to alert” message.
Why does Cloudflare show Error 1014?
Cloudflare defines web Error 1014 as “CNAME Cross-User Banned.” It concerns a CNAME pointing across Cloudflare accounts or zones and is unrelated to IMAP authentication. If you reached the error in a browser while configuring a custom domain, use the DNS path instead of changing mail-client passwords.
Correct a custom-domain configuration
- Check that the CNAME target belongs to the service and is the exact target required for your selected HTTPS setup.
- Review whether the CNAME is proxied through Cloudflare. Intercom’s guidance says non-Enterprise customers should use DNS-only mode for this situation.
- Match the service’s HTTPS mode to the CNAME configuration; an HTTPS-mode mismatch can prevent validation.
- If the zone is Enterprise-managed, check whether Zone Hold is preventing the required configuration and disable it only with the account administrator’s approval.
- Wait for DNS propagation, then retest the custom domain in a private browser window.
Changing an IMAP port cannot resolve a Cloudflare CNAME error. Keep the web-domain repair separate from mailbox troubleshooting.

How can I isolate a local computer, network, or security-software cause?
Isolation tests should change one variable at a time and should never leave security protection disabled.
- Another client: configure the account in a second supported mail app. If both fail, suspect the account, provider, or network.
- Another network: use a trusted hotspot temporarily. Success there points to a router, firewall, DNS filter, VPN, or managed network policy.
- Clean security profile: pause only the relevant mail or DNS inspection feature under the product’s documented procedure, test once, and turn it back on immediately.
- Logs: note blocked hostnames, ports, certificate-inspection errors, and timestamps. Give those records to the security or mail administrator.
- DNS comparison: compare results on the affected network and a known-good network. Do not replace provider records with arbitrary public DNS servers on a managed network without authorization.
If a vendor documents an exclusion, use that narrow exclusion rather than a blanket firewall or antivirus shutdown. A temporary test can identify the cause; it is not a safe permanent configuration.

Frequently asked questions
Is 1014 a permanent IMAP error?
No. It can represent a transient disconnect, a rejected authentication attempt, or a provider-specific alert. Whether it returns after reconnecting and whether webmail works are more informative than the number alone.

Can changing the email password fix every 1014 alert?
No. A password change helps only when credentials or account status caused the failure. It will not fix a blocked DNS refresh, a TLS mismatch, a server outage, or a Cloudflare CNAME configuration.
Should I delete and recreate my mail profile?
Recreate a profile only after confirming the account works in webmail and recording local folders and archives. Profile deletion can remove access to locally stored data even though server-side messages remain intact.
How long should I wait after correcting DNS or security settings?
Allow the relevant DNS cache and refresh interval to pass, then retest. For the Exchange Online case, Microsoft states that the outlook.office365.com DNS record has a five-minute TTL; local caches and security products may add their own delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a universal database of IMAP login error codes?
No. IMAP servers and mail clients often add provider-specific alert numbers, so catalogs such as Open-Xchange’s describe only that implementation. The complete message and server hostname are needed to interpret 1014 reliably.
Why does my mail work in a browser but not in Outlook?
Webmail bypasses the desktop client’s stored credentials, TLS settings, and local network integrations. A browser success therefore points you toward the profile, authentication method, firewall, VPN, or security inspection on the computer.
