Windows error 10047 is the Winsock code WSAEAFNOSUPPORT. It means a program tried to use an IP address, address family, or network protocol that does not match the socket it created. Microsoft describes it as: “An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.” In a game, launcher, server tool, or voice client, the remedy depends on whether only that application is misconfigured or Windows networking is damaged. Start with basic connectivity checks, then reset Winsock and TCP/IP, reinstall the adapter driver if necessary, and reserve Network reset or replacement hardware for later. The steps below follow that least-disruptive order.
What does Windows error 10047 mean?
Error 10047 is WSAEAFNOSUPPORT, a Windows Sockets error caused by an address-family and protocol mismatch. Every socket has an address family, such as IPv4 (AF_INET) or IPv6 (AF_INET6), plus a socket type and protocol. The address supplied to that socket must be compatible with those choices.

The application binds to the wrong family
A dedicated server, mod, launcher, or voice component may be configured with an IPv6 address while its socket is IPv4-only, or the reverse. A copied bind address, an outdated configuration file, or a hostname that now resolves to a different family can trigger the mismatch before any connection is established.
A VPN, proxy, or virtual adapter changes the path
VPN clients, virtual-machine switches, tunneling software, and some security products add network interfaces. An application that enumerates interfaces or selects one by name can choose an address that its socket cannot use. Disable one recently added network component temporarily and retest; do not remove several at once, because you will lose the ability to identify the trigger.

How do I reset Winsock and TCP/IP safely?
Microsoft’s first-line repair sequence resets the Winsock catalog, TCP/IP settings, local IP lease, and DNS cache. It requires an elevated Command Prompt and temporarily interrupts network access.
- Save work and close games, launchers, VPN sessions, and other network software.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands in the listed order, pressing Enter after each one:
netsh winsock resetnetsh int ip resetipconfig /releaseipconfig /renewipconfig /flushdns - Restart Windows, even if every command appears to complete successfully.
- After the restart, test ordinary connectivity first, then launch the affected game or service. Reconnect any VPN only after confirming that the base connection works.
The commands do not change a game’s own bind address. If the same program alone still returns 10047 while other applications work, return to its IPv4/IPv6, proxy, and interface settings instead of repeatedly resetting Windows.
When should I reinstall the network adapter driver?
Use driver reinstall when Windows does not consistently see the adapter, the troubleshooter identifies a driver problem, or the reset sequence did not restore connectivity across applications. Microsoft recommends obtaining a backup driver first if the computer may be offline after removal.
- Download the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer while you still have internet access. Store it locally or on removable media.
- Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and identify the Wi-Fi or Ethernet device in use.
- Right-click the adapter, choose Uninstall device, and confirm. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, use it only when you have the replacement package ready.
- Restart Windows. The operating system should detect the hardware and reinstall a driver automatically.
- If it does not, run the manufacturer’s saved installer, reconnect to the network, and test the affected application.
Uninstalling the device removes the current adapter instance, not your personal files. It can still leave you without networking until Windows reinstalls a compatible driver, which is why the backup matters.
Is Network reset worth using for error 10047?
Network reset is a later, more disruptive option. Microsoft says it removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after a restart. It can also require VPN clients, virtual switches, and other networking software to be configured again.

Do not use this step merely because one game has a bad bind address. Reserve it for system-wide failures that survive the Winsock/TCP-IP reset and adapter-driver check, and make a note of custom static IP, DNS, proxy, or virtual-switch settings before resetting.
Can a USB-to-Ethernet adapter help diagnose the problem?
A USB-to-Ethernet adapter is a conditional test and replacement path, not a guaranteed cure for every 10047 error. Connecting through a separate adapter can show whether the built-in Wi-Fi or Ethernet hardware, its driver, or its interface configuration is the source of the failure.
- Match the adapter’s USB connector to a port on the computer.

Match IPv4 and IPv6 deliberately
