If Windows Server reports “The cluster log is corrupt”, the likely error is ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT, hexadecimal 0x13A5 (decimal 5029). The code identifies a damaged or unreadable cluster-log condition, but it does not identify the underlying cause or provide a universal repair command. First preserve the event details, then review the System and FailoverClustering logs and generate a fresh, node-specific cluster log with Microsoft’s documented Get-ClusterLog command. Do not delete, rename, restore, or force cluster state based only on this message; those actions can remove evidence or affect quorum and database recovery.
What does “The cluster log is corrupt” mean?
Microsoft defines ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT as error 5029 (0x13A5): “The cluster log is corrupt.” The same hexadecimal mapping appears in Microsoft’s protocol error reference. The message concerns the failover-cluster diagnostic log; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis of a bad disk, a failed network, a broken quorum, or a damaged cluster database.

A cluster log records cluster-service activity for a node. When Windows cannot use part of that log, the cluster service may also report another startup or resource problem, or the log condition may be a symptom noticed during a different operation. The definition does not say why the log became unreadable and does not prescribe deletion, renaming, or replacement. Treat 0x13A5 as a signal to collect evidence and establish the surrounding failure.
Before applying the procedure below, verify that the displayed text and code really match. A message that merely contains the words “cluster,” “log,” or “corrupt” can belong to a different code or workflow.

How can I confirm that the code is really 0x13A5?
Capture the exact value before changing the node. The distinction matters because adjacent cluster errors have different meanings and may require different investigations.
- Record the complete text, including whether Windows shows
0x13A5,0x000013A5, or decimal5029. - Write down the affected node, the time zone used by the event viewer, and the first time the message appeared.
- Note what was happening: cluster-service startup, a node join, a resource move, a failover, maintenance, or another workflow.
- Save the original event details and any adjacent events before clearing logs, restarting services, or changing cluster state.
Microsoft’s system-error table is the authoritative place to compare the code and its neighbors: system error codes 4000–5999. Microsoft’s protocol reference independently maps 0x000013A5 to ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT at MS-ERREF.
Which nearby error codes are different?
Do not substitute a neighboring code for 0x13A5. Microsoft lists these related values separately:
| Code | Microsoft name | Definition or implication |
|---|---|---|
0x13A4 |
ERROR_QUORUMLOG_OPEN_FAILED |
The quorum log could not be opened; this is not the same condition as a corrupt cluster log. |
0x13A5 (5029) |
ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT |
“The cluster log is corrupt.” |
0x13A8 |
ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CHKPOINT_NOT_FOUND |
A cluster-log checkpoint was not found. |
0x13A9 |
ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_NOT_ENOUGH_SPACE |
There is not enough space for the cluster log. |
The table is a triage aid, not a repair matrix. Each code can appear with other failures, and the surrounding events determine which investigation is safe.
What should I do first when the error appears?
Start with evidence preservation. Microsoft’s cluster-service startup guidance emphasizes reviewing diagnostic logs and generating a fresh cluster log for the affected node. Collecting those records is diagnostic work; it does not guarantee that the service will start or that the corruption condition will disappear.

- Identify the node. Confirm which server emitted the message. A node-local log condition and a cluster-wide outage are different situations.
- Preserve the event context. Export or copy the relevant System and FailoverClustering entries, including their timestamps and full text. Keep the original time zone and node name with the copies.
- Record the service state. Note whether the cluster service is running, stopped, repeatedly failing, or unavailable only during a particular operation. Do not infer a cause solely from the service state.
- Record the cluster state you can observe safely. Note whether other nodes remain online, whether workloads are still available, and whether the message is isolated to one node. If checking the cluster would require a disruptive action, stop and involve the person responsible for the cluster.
- Keep the original files. Do not clear event logs, delete the existing cluster log, or rename files while evidence is still being collected.
How do I review the Windows logs for the failure?
Review the System and FailoverClustering diagnostic logs around the first occurrence and any subsequent service failure. Work outward from the timestamp rather than searching only for the literal phrase “cluster log is corrupt.” An earlier storage, access, startup, quorum, network, or resource event may explain why the message appeared.
Build a time-ordered record
For the affected node, create a short timeline containing the last known healthy time, the first 0x13A5 event, cluster-service start or stop events, and any failover or maintenance action. Include events immediately before and after the error. The sequence is often more informative than a single event because the error definition itself contains no causal detail.
Separate node-local and cluster-wide symptoms
If only one node reports the condition while other nodes continue to serve workloads, preserve that node’s records and compare its timestamps with the healthy nodes’ events. If several nodes report failures at the same time, treat the incident as potentially cluster-wide and avoid making independent changes on each server. The code alone cannot tell you which scope applies.
Look for a second condition
Check whether the same interval contains a quorum-log, checkpoint, space, storage, network, or cluster-database message. A neighboring code such as 0x13A4 or 0x13A9 should be handled as its own condition, not folded into ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT. Capture the full event text and source rather than relying on a shortened summary.

Get-ClusterLog -Node 'Local Node Name' -Destination c:temp -UseLocalTime
- Open PowerShell with administrator privileges on a server that can run the cluster command.
- Replace
Local Node Namewith the exact affected node name. - Replace
c:tempwith a directory that exists and has sufficient space and appropriate access controls. Use a location approved for diagnostic data. - Keep
-UseLocalTimewhen you want timestamps in the node’s local time; record the time zone alongside the files. - Run the command and preserve the generated output with the System and FailoverClustering event exports.
The command is a collection step, not a repair. If it fails, record the command’s complete error text, the node on which it was run, and the destination path. Do not repeatedly change cluster settings to make collection succeed; escalate the collection failure with the original evidence.
Microsoft documents this procedure in its cluster-service startup troubleshooting guidance. That guidance applies to supported Windows Server releases in general; the cited material does not establish a version-specific repair sequence for 0x13A5.
How should I interpret the newly collected log?
Read the generated log together with the event timeline. The useful question is not simply whether the word “corrupt” appears again, but what the cluster service was doing immediately before it reported the condition and whether another failure explains the outage.
- Only the log condition appears: preserve the files and confirm whether the cluster service and workloads are otherwise healthy. Do not assume that the absence of another obvious message proves the log is the root cause.
- The service fails to start: correlate the startup attempt with the System and FailoverClustering entries and provide the complete set to a qualified cluster administrator or support channel.
- Quorum or database state is also implicated: stop before attempting forced quorum, database restoration, or other state-changing recovery. Those actions depend on the cluster’s design and current node state.
- Storage or space errors appear: document the affected volume, node, and timestamps. The separate
ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_NOT_ENOUGH_SPACEcode must not be treated as interchangeable with0x13A5. - Several nodes show simultaneous symptoms: preserve evidence from each node and coordinate one incident response. Independent changes can make it harder to establish the original sequence.
These branches are ways to organize evidence, not claims that a particular symptom has a guaranteed remedy. The official error definition does not provide a universal causal checklist.

Should I delete or rename the cluster log?
Not as a generic first fix. The Microsoft error definition and startup guidance reviewed here do not endorse deleting or renaming a cluster log as a universal remedy. Removing or replacing files can destroy the evidence needed to determine whether the condition is limited to logging or is part of a broader startup, quorum, storage, or database problem.

Do not issue forced-quorum commands, restore cluster-database state, or make other irreversible changes solely because the title says “clusterlog corrupt.” Such actions require knowledge of the supported Windows Server release, cluster configuration, node health, quorum condition, and recovery plan. If a documented procedure for your exact environment calls for a file operation, follow that procedure only after preserving the original evidence and confirming the change with the responsible administrator.
What if the cluster service still will not start?
Once you have captured the original events and a fresh node-specific cluster log, escalate with the complete evidence set. Include the exact code, node name, timestamps and time zone, service state, affected workloads, whether other nodes are healthy, and the full surrounding System and FailoverClustering entries.
Microsoft’s startup article is general troubleshooting guidance; it does not state that every 0x13A5 incident requires one particular repair or escalation path. A qualified Windows Server failover-cluster administrator can use the evidence to decide whether the next step concerns logging, quorum, cluster-database state, storage, networking, or another component. Keep the affected node in its current state unless your incident plan authorizes a change.

Can this error be fixed without changing cluster state?
Often, the safest initial work is entirely diagnostic: verify the code, preserve events, review the logs, and generate a fresh cluster log. Those steps may reveal that the message is secondary to another condition and allow an administrator to select a targeted, supported recovery. They do not promise that the cluster service will recover by itself.
Whether a state-changing repair is appropriate depends on facts not contained in 0x13A5: the Windows Server release, cluster configuration, node health, quorum status, shared-storage condition, and the exact surrounding events. Until those facts are known, evidence collection is safer than improvising a reset.
What is the practical fix sequence?
Use this order when responding to a new incident:
- Verify the mapping: confirm
ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT,0x13A5or0x000013A5, and decimal5029. - Freeze the evidence: record node, time zone, operation in progress, service state, and workload impact; preserve the original events.
- Review context: inspect System and FailoverClustering entries before and after the failure and distinguish node-local from cluster-wide symptoms.
- Collect a fresh log: run the documented elevated PowerShell command with the correct node and destination.
- Correlate: determine whether quorum, storage, space, networking, startup, or database messages accompany the log condition.
- Escalate safely: provide the evidence to a qualified cluster administrator or support channel before any forced-quorum, database-restore, delete, or rename operation.
This sequence answers what can be done safely from the information available. A universal “repair” command is not established for this error code.
For a separate supported Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7 workstation with general crashes or damaged system elements, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can complement antivirus software; it is not a replacement for Windows Server failover-cluster diagnostics, and results vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x13A5 the same as a quorum-log failure?
No. Microsoft assigns 0x13A5 to ERROR_CLUSTERLOG_CORRUPT, while 0x13A4 is ERROR_QUORUMLOG_OPEN_FAILED. Treat the numeric code and its surrounding events as separate evidence rather than using the names interchangeably.
Where should I store the generated cluster log?
Use a destination directory that exists, has enough free space, and is approved for diagnostic data. Keep the path, node name, local-time setting, and collection result with the log so another administrator can interpret its timestamps.

Preserve that node’s evidence and compare its timing with events from healthy nodes. A node-specific symptom may require a different investigation from a simultaneous cluster-wide outage, so avoid making identical changes everywhere.
Can restarting the cluster service be considered the fix?
The 0x13A5 definition does not establish that a restart repairs the condition. If a restart is part of your approved incident procedure, capture the original evidence first and document the result so the timeline remains clear.
