Install a CurseForge modpack by matching its exact Minecraft version and loader, downloading its separate server files when available, installing or selecting the matching Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric server, and then starting the server with the supplied files. Your players must use the same pack release, loader platform, and Minecraft version.

What you need before installing
A modpack is a coordinated set of mods, configuration files, scripts, and sometimes resource files. A client installation from the CurseForge desktop app is not automatically a complete dedicated-server installation. Servers need loader files, startup scripts, configurations, and only the mods that can run on a server.

- Access to the modpack’s page on CurseForge.
- Permission to create or replace files in the Minecraft server directory, either through SFTP, a control-panel file manager, or local shell access.
- A server whose Java runtime, memory allocation, operating system, and storage meet the pack’s requirements.
- The exact Minecraft version and loader listed by the pack: Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric.
- A backup location if you are adding the pack to an existing world. Installing a pack can alter world data and removing mods later can make that world unloadable.
Loader and control-panel labels change over time. The names below describe the functions you need; a panel may present them under a different menu.
Choose the right installation route

Prefer the first route when it is available. A server pack is normally assembled by the pack author and avoids much of the client-only filtering that makes a manual installation fragile.

Step 1: Verify the pack, Minecraft version, and loader
Read the pack’s Files page
- Open the modpack’s CurseForge page and select Files.
- Choose the precise release you intend to run, not merely the newest file in the list.
- Record the Minecraft version shown for that release.
- Record the mod loader and its version. The loader may be Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric.
- Check the release notes or file details for a server pack, required Java runtime, memory guidance, and any supplied startup instructions.
The Minecraft version is not interchangeable. A pack built for 1.20.1 requires a 1.20.1 server; selecting 1.21 because it is newer will produce missing-mod, registry, or loader errors rather than an automatic upgrade.
Keep one version identifier for every component
Write down the pack release, Minecraft version, loader name, loader version, and Java requirement before downloading anything. Use those same values in the server panel and in the launcher profiles used by players. A server can start with the wrong jar in some panels, but clients will then fail to negotiate the mod list or may join a world with incompatible data.

Find the separate server download
- Remain on the exact release’s file page.
- Look for a download named Server Files. It may be listed in Additional Files rather than beside the normal client download.
- Confirm that the server-file release corresponds to the same pack version you recorded. Server-file titles can include a pack name followed by a server-files build, such as “All the Mods 10 – ATM10 – Server-Files-0.31” or “All The Forge – Server Files – v11.0.2.”
- Download the archive to your computer and extract it into a new, empty folder. Do not nest the actual server files inside an extra folder if the startup script expects them at the server root.
The ordinary client profile or a single mod download is not a substitute for a server pack. If no Server Files entry exists for the selected release, use the manual route described below instead of guessing at a different release.
Inspect the archive before uploading
Look for a start script, a loader jar or installer, a mods directory, a config directory, and a manifest.json or equivalent metadata. Some packs provide a script that downloads Forge and the required files on its first run. Preserve the directory structure and use that script when its instructions say to do so.
Step 3: Install the matching server loader
Forge or NeoForge
- Obtain the Forge or NeoForge installer that matches the loader version recorded in Step 1.
- Open the installer and choose its server-installation option, rather than the client option.
- Select the extracted server-pack folder as the destination.
- Allow the installer to place the loader jar and supporting files in that folder.
- If the pack includes a Windows batch file or another start script that installs the loader and mods, follow that script’s instructions instead of running a second installer. Running both methods can create duplicate jars or point the server at different loader versions.
The graphical installer route is preferable when documentation for a command-line switch is unclear. Do not rely on an unverified command-line flag; use the installer’s visible server option and confirm that the resulting loader version matches the pack metadata.

Fabric
- Use the Fabric server launcher supplied by the Fabric project for the exact Minecraft version.
- Place the launcher and the server-pack files in the directory that will be the server root.
- Use the pack’s supplied startup script if it includes one, and keep the
modsandconfigdirectories beside the launcher rather than in a separate client profile.
Fabric packs can have different server-launcher arrangements from Forge or NeoForge packs. Do not replace a Fabric launcher with a Forge jar simply because both files are called “server.”
Step 4: Upload the prepared directory
Using SFTP
- Stop the target server and connect with an SFTP client using the credentials supplied by your provider.
- Open the server’s Minecraft directory. This is the directory from which the provider starts the server, not necessarily your account’s home directory.
- Upload the contents of the extracted server-pack folder, including scripts, loader files,
mods,config, and metadata files. - Keep file names and capitalization unchanged. Linux servers treat
Configandconfigas different directories.
Using a control-panel file manager
Upload the archive if the panel supports extraction, then extract it in the server root. Open the extracted folder and verify that the start script and the mods directory are at the same level expected by the panel. A common mistake is uploading a folder named after the archive so that the panel sees an empty root and cannot find the loader.
Do not overwrite an existing world until you have made a backup. If the target directory already contains another pack, move its files aside or use a clean directory; mixing two packs leaves incompatible jars and configurations that are difficult to diagnose.
Step 5: Configure the server startup settings
Select the Minecraft and Java versions
In the host panel’s startup or installation settings, set the Minecraft version, loader type, loader version, and Java version to the values recorded from the pack release. If the panel offers a “modpack” selector, choose the same release there rather than selecting a generic Forge or Fabric server first.
Java compatibility is part of the pack’s requirements. If the pack specifies a Java version, select that runtime in the panel or install it on the machine before starting. A server that exits immediately with an unsupported-class or runtime error is often using a different Java version from the one expected by the loader or a mod.

Point the panel at the loader jar
Set the startup jar or executable to the Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric server launcher created in Step 3. Do not point a modded server at the vanilla minecraft_server.jar; vanilla will not load the pack’s mods and may generate a new, misleading set of files.
If the pack supplies a start script, configure the panel to run that script when the provider supports scripts. Read the script before accepting it: it may download a loader, set a memory value, or expect a particular working directory. The script must run from the server root so relative paths resolve to the intended mods and config folders.
Step 6: Accept the EULA, allocate memory, and start
Accept the EULA deliberately
Start the server once. It may create an eula.txt file and stop. Read the Minecraft EULA, then edit that file so the acceptance setting is eula=true if you agree to the terms. Save it in the server root and start again.
Set memory without starving the machine
Use the panel’s memory allocation or the supplied script’s memory settings. Allocate enough memory for the pack and its player count while leaving headroom for the operating system and other services. There is no reliable universal RAM figure: requirements vary by pack, view distance, world size, and concurrent players, so use the pack author’s stated guidance when it provides one rather than copying a value from an unrelated pack.
Wait for a complete startup
Watch the console from the first line through world generation and the world-load message. A process that remains running but never reaches world loading is not ready for players. Stop and correct the first error in the log; later stack traces are often consequences of that initial failure.

Step 7: Test the server before inviting players
- Connect with a client profile using the same CurseForge pack name, platform, and exact release.
- Use the same Minecraft version and loader family as the server. A Forge client is not interchangeable with a NeoForge or Fabric client.
- Join with a test account or from the server machine before distributing the address.
- Check that the world loads, common blocks and items appear, and a simple save-and-restart preserves progress.
- Read the console after disconnecting and restarting. Warnings about optional client features may be harmless; missing required mods, registry mismatches, and loader errors are not.
When a player receives a mod-list or registry mismatch, compare the client’s installed profile against the server’s recorded release rather than adding random jars to either side.
When no Server Files download exists
Some pack authors publish only a client profile. You can assemble a server, but the process requires more checking because client-only content must be removed.

Build the loader server
- Install the exact Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric server loader for the pack’s Minecraft version.
- Run it once in a clean directory so it creates the base server files, then stop it.
- Copy the pack’s server-relevant
modsandconfigdirectories into that directory. - Compare the pack manifest with the copied files and add every required dependency at the versions specified by the manifest.
Remove client-only content
Client-only mods commonly provide rendering, shaders, menus, key bindings, or graphical performance features. They cannot load on a dedicated server. Check each mod’s documentation or the pack’s issue notes before deleting it; some mods have separate client and server components, while others must remain on both sides. Remove only items confirmed to be client-only and keep a record so the same distinction can be applied to every update.
Expect manual troubleshooting
A manually assembled server may start and then fail when a player joins because a dependency, configuration file, or server-side library is missing. Resolve errors one at a time, beginning with the first “missing” or “could not load” entry in the log. Do not copy the entire client directory blindly: client caches, shader packs, screenshots, and launcher metadata do not belong on the server.

Many game-server control panels provide a Modpacks or CurseForge installer. The usual workflow is:

- Back up the world and any custom server files.
- Open the panel’s Modpacks or equivalent installer.
- Paste the CurseForge modpack link or search for the pack by name.
- Select the exact pack release, Minecraft version, and loader offered by the installer.
- Confirm the reinstall warning. A reinstall commonly replaces the current server directory.
- After installation, inspect the startup settings to verify the loader jar, Java version, and memory allocation.
- Accept the EULA and start the server, then perform the client test described above.
If the panel does not list the release you need, use SFTP or its file manager with the server files from CurseForge. A one-click catalog is not proof that every release or loader variant is available.

Updating, changing, or removing the pack safely
Updating to a new release
Read the new release’s Minecraft and loader requirements first. Back up the world, server directory, and any edited configurations. Install the new server files in a separate directory or after making a restorable backup, then test the world before allowing normal players to connect. Never assume that a release update changes only mods; configurations, scripts, and world-generation settings can also change.
Changing loaders or Minecraft versions
Forge, NeoForge, and Fabric are different loader platforms, not interchangeable labels. Treat a loader or Minecraft-version change as a migration: make a separate backup, create a clean server directory, and test a copy of the world. Keep the old directory until the new installation has loaded and saved successfully.
Removing the pack
Stop the server and preserve the world before deleting mods. A world that contains blocks or entities supplied by a mod can lose data or fail to load when that mod is removed. If you need a vanilla world, create a new world rather than converting the modded one in place.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Pack name and exact release recorded.
- Minecraft version matches on the CurseForge release, server, and every client.
- Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric platform and version match everywhere.
- Server Files archive used when available; otherwise, client-only mods removed from the manual build.
- Loader server jar or supplied start script selected instead of the vanilla jar.
- Java runtime set to the pack’s requirement.
- EULA accepted after reading it.
- Memory allocation follows the pack’s guidance and leaves operating-system headroom.
- World and server backups completed before installation or upgrade.
- Console reaches world loading without unresolved required-mod errors.
- A test client joins with the identical pack profile.
Once every item passes, distribute the server address and the exact pack release to players. Keeping that release fixed until you schedule an upgrade prevents most avoidable connection and world-compatibility problems.
